Am I the only one who found it funny that his middle name is Tyrone.

[–]thelittlewhitebird 234 points235 points ago

It is a common Irish name

[–]BRAIN_FREEEEEZE 384 points385 points ago

Black Irish.

[–]psikeiro 179 points180 points ago

Prefer the term "Smoked Irish"

[–]alreadytakenusername 26 points27 points ago

Smoked Irish: beer-marinated smoked salmon (Don't look up)

[–]Esc4p3 24 points25 points ago

The only thing there is the ceiling.

[–]hortonhearsahipster 15 points16 points ago

Like Shaquile O'Neal?

[–]teakwood54 62 points63 points ago

We prefer the term "African-American Irish".

[–]pacfan40 12 points13 points ago

African-Americanish...

[–]Day5225 18 points19 points ago

African-Amish

[–]FarmerTedd 16 points17 points ago

Watermelon

[–]Lampmonster1 8 points9 points ago

As a black Irish person, I wish one of my middle names was Tyrone.

[–]BB_Zen 14 points15 points ago

[–]teresaroze 6 points7 points ago

Tyrone finally got his shit together.

[–]TJarnold92 11 points12 points ago

In fact, one of the largest historical areas of Ireland is called Tyrone.

[–]pdx_girl 25 points26 points ago

I was chemistry partners with a very white guy named "Tyrone Love." I never had the guts to ask him why his parents picked that name. Now I know.

Edited for clarity; thanks CitizenPremier :)

[–]CitizenPremier 26 points27 points ago

I'm willing to bet he got his name from his parents.

[–]GoddessOfGoodness 6 points7 points ago

can't tell if this is sarcasm or not.

[–]K4ge 4 points5 points ago

[–]clarkycat 11 points12 points ago

Not to be pedantic, but I think I'd disagree with you about that. Tyrone is the name of an Irish county, coming from the Irish "Tír Eoghain", which means "Land of Eoghan". In my 30 years I don't think I've ever met any Irish person with that name.

It may, however, be a common Irish-American name as some people of Irish extraction seem to enjoy naming their children after place-names and geographical features of Ireland (cf. Shannon and Eireann).

It's a bit like naming your child "John Connecticut Smith". Utterly foolish if you ask me.

[–]DoFist 13 points14 points ago

Yes, trying to conserve your culture is utterly foolish.

[–]clarkycat 3 points4 points ago

I guess I haven't expressed myself very clearly there. Let me try to clarify: While I think it can certainly be a noble idea to preserve your culture, I think that to Irish ears the name itself sounds foolish, which I tried to convey by coining an American equivalent.

[–]imacyclops 26 points27 points ago

I think Connecticut Smith is an awesome name.

[–]juggleknob 15 points16 points ago

yeah but he was always picked on by Alabama Jones

[–]LoungingLemur 23 points24 points ago

...This is the first time I connected Indiana Jones with the state of Indiana. I am not a clever man.

[–]PEE_4_UR_BUTT 7 points8 points ago

ALABAMA MAN

[–]juggleknob 4 points5 points ago

Now with bowling alley playset

[–]TzarJack 7 points8 points ago

George Washington.

It's a common way of earning a surname, being named after where you came from (or your job, Thatcher/Smith or your relations, e.g. McGurk (son of Gurk) Johnson)

[–]hotel-yorba 3 points4 points ago

Home Movies reference or random choice of name?

[–]dangerbird2 2 points3 points ago

English naming customs are fairly different from Irish customs. Irish surnames are almost always patronymic (Names starting with O, Mc or mac are Gaelic, not English), while English names are often based on place or profession

[–]FoeHammer99099 0 points1 point ago

Wrong way round dude. They named the place after the person on that one.

[–]tgunter 3 points4 points ago

The "ton" in the name means "town." Washington was originally a place in England. George Washington's family took their name from where they were from. Then he became famous, and we started naming places after him. So the name kind of went full circle.

[–]TzarJack 0 points1 point ago

He was from an English family - four generations down if I'm not mistaken - the name perhaps came from England?

Just google mapped it - Washington, West Sussex RH20, United Kingdom And there's a second but I can't be arsed with the address

[–]h_crazydangerous 66 points67 points ago

[–]totoro11 30 points31 points ago

Is that Huel?

[–]h_crazydangerous 17 points18 points ago

It is!

[–]rolfv 90 points91 points ago

[–]i_liek_stuff 12 points13 points ago

My name is Tyrone, and I'm asian. AMA

[–]Actually_Doesnt_Care 27 points28 points ago

SHIT TYRONE

[–]MyWholeBodyIsCrying 5 points6 points ago

Tyrone finally got his shit together.

[–]yusernametaken 8 points9 points ago

"Shit Tyrone, get it together!"

[–]GalaxyTaxi 3 points4 points ago

God damnit Tyrone!

[–]Abyssus 152 points153 points ago

Hell yeah National Forensics League...

[–]Cows_say_meeeow 15 points16 points ago

Yeah I was surprised he was in it as well.

[–]Abyssus 47 points48 points ago

I wasn't, a few major figures have been in it. Obama did student congress (got 3rd his senior year) and Oprah did DP (dramatic performance...not double penetration to all of you non-NFLers).

[–]Ter3nce 8 points9 points ago

). Sorry.

[–]TerminalPlantain 6 points7 points ago

Dammit. Now that he fixed his post, your bracket is hanging out all alone and it's driving me insane.

[–]Abyssus 3 points4 points ago

Fix'd

[–]Cows_say_meeeow 3 points4 points ago

Wow, did not expect that.

Did any big names do LD? :P

[–]DonJu4n 22 points23 points ago

What about Abraham Lincoln, does he count or is that meta hipster of me?

[–]tactical_iguana 2 points3 points ago

Bill Clinton is my favorite LD'er!

[–]parsons152 5 points6 points ago

[–]kektr0city 0 points1 point ago

As an NFL member, hell yea. Actually, the director of my debate program in high school was the president of the NFL for a while.

[–]yasupra 2 points3 points ago

This is what I came here for.

[–]join_the_sith 2 points3 points ago

I wonder why "Debating team" and NFL are listed separately, I was on my high school debate team, which was a part of the NFL, is this not true for all U.S. debate teams???

[–]brainfoam 221 points222 points ago

nice to know his sense of humor has always been the same

[–]Birdslapper 130 points131 points ago

"or non-entity" is my favorite part lol

[–]FlyingGoatee 16 points17 points ago

non-entity

Sounds like a regular Tobi.

Also holy crap, this is the first time I've seen you outside our motherland.

Kind of strange to see someone from there randomly on a default subreddit.

[–]Birdslapper 8 points9 points ago

It's so weird seeing you without your banner lol

[–]bs0l 11 points12 points ago

its like you just met outside of work without your uniforms on!

[–]donttryathomekids 2 points3 points ago

im happy i witnessed this. this was a good thing. i'm happy to know this happened : D

[–]moddestmouse 16 points17 points ago

To be fair, Colbert was bullied horribly in school and hated his high school. Source, I went there.

[–]jareddg 89 points90 points ago

I, too, dislike being called a non-entity.

[–]Haolepalagi 35 points36 points ago

Shut up, Jared.

[–]DIP_MY_BALLS_IN_IT 14 points15 points ago

Shut the fuck up Donny.

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 3 points4 points ago

I'm a go getter, damnit. Want to be my friend?

[–]SweaterMe 105 points106 points ago

Wow he still has that great smile.

[–]InitiallyAnAsshole 49 points50 points ago

Ya what a handsome man/young man he is/was.

[–]xbiggiesmallsx 110 points111 points ago

  • Ya what a handsome man man he is
  • Ya what a handsome young man he is
  • Ya what a handsome man man he was
  • Ya what a handsome young man he was

[–]anace 7 points8 points ago

Ya what a handsome {man|young} man he {is|was}.

[–]thebeattakesme 4 points5 points ago

i love that smile

[–]zuizide 56 points57 points ago

I think he's made quite a few friends. Good job Mr. Colbert, good job.

[–]Alphonseboy 47 points48 points ago

Who needs friends when you have a SuperPAC?

[–]ecu11b 8 points9 points ago

Sums up American politics quite nicely

[–]Bazooe 19 points20 points ago

Noted: Never call Stephen Colbert a non-entity.

[–]bluebunnyram 51 points52 points ago

I will never be as cool as him. Ever. And I've accepted my fate. Everyone else should, too.

[–]daggereight 24 points25 points ago

Fate accepted.

[–]anti_karmatic 18 points19 points ago

Fate confirmed.

[–]Gawdzillers 22 points23 points ago

Open fire.

[–]BDandC 70 points71 points ago

I like that theres a giant photo of him with all his friends.

[–]aldude3 55 points56 points ago

He paid them to be there.

[–]knightofmars 8 points9 points ago

He infiltrated a random group of friends with his smile.

[–]zlam 44 points45 points ago

What are those numbers?

[–]katherini 51 points52 points ago

The years he participated in those clubs--1 being freshman year, 2 sophomore, et cetera

[–]nsloth 74 points75 points ago

I see you were in Latin club with him

[–]Tiak 11 points12 points ago

What about the "Entered 6"?

[–]Chumbaniya 14 points15 points ago

That's a reference to his sexual conquests.

[–]zlam 7 points8 points ago

TIL. Thanks.

[–]lace_up 23 points24 points ago

holy shit, i knew the man had money but growing up right on the battery?

[–]blueberry_pies 7 points8 points ago

He grew up on James Island and lived on the peninsula through high school. He has said he hated it

Edit: plus his family rented that house

[–]erfling 6 points7 points ago

I thought that too. Then I pulled it up on street view. The houses are on the even side of the street. It appears he lived in the water.

[–]technoleak 48 points49 points ago

I will offer a million dollars to the man or woman who can dig up footage of Colbert in his High school Glee Club (On condition that Colbert in turn pays me a sum of 2 million dollars to immediately destroy said footage)

[–]thealicemay 25 points26 points ago

I think I like him even more now.

[–]rvlution 7 points8 points ago

Sounds like he was the inspiration for Max Fischer in Rushmore

[–]asudan30 24 points25 points ago

Google that address. 39 East Battery, Charleston SC. Colbert had some awfully wealthy parents!

[–]irishelcid 15 points16 points ago

Anybody who lives on the battery in Charleston is loaded and the HS he went to, Porter Gaud, isn't a cheap place to attend either.

[–]R4L 6 points7 points ago

I went to Porter for a couple years, can confirm it's not a cheap school.

[–]fucktales 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, people pay a TON of money to send their kids to a school with multiple pedophilia scandals leading to dozens of children being molested with top officials doing their best to look the other way. I am amazed the place is even still open.

[–]dissonance07 26 points27 points ago

His dad was an MD, and vice president of student affairs at a medical school in Charleston. His mom was a homemaker. I don't know if that would make you that wealthy. Maybe in the late 60s/early 70s?

His family did apparently move nearer downtown after his father died, so his younger childhood would probably not have been spent there.

EDIT: This was his dad. Shit, that man did everything - at 32, he was assistant dean at of Yale's medical school, moved many different places. He could have been a wealthy man.

[–]lace_up 11 points12 points ago

Medical University of South Carolina, oldest medical school in the south, is a private institution with a new building, ashley river tower, ranked in the top 20 most beautiful hospitals in the world. It has several outstanding programs, including nationally ranked OB/GYN and gynecologic oncology, bariatrics ("center of excellence" designation), and the 2nd ranked cardiothoracic surgery program in the nation. 39 east battery is a crazy fancy address with houses selling off for tens of millions of dollars.

[–]joggle1 4 points5 points ago

The house is across the street from the yacht club. Unless you're wealthy, it's hard to imagine owning a house with a location like that.

[–]Jescro 7 points8 points ago

Cause of death: Severe burns and smoke inhalation as a result of an airplane crash

wow.

[–]rockne 9 points10 points ago

On September 11, 1974, when Colbert was ten years old, his father and two of his brothers, Peter and Paul, were killed in the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 while it was attempting to land in Charlotte, North Carolina. They were en route to enroll the two boys at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut.

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 7 points8 points ago

He would have been so proud of him ;_;

[–]I_CAPE_RATS 8 points9 points ago

For $20,000/year tuition, you're damn right you get your own 1/2 page in the yearbook!

[–]the_bhan 6 points7 points ago

there needs to be more of these yearbook pages of celebs. this is hilarious.

[–]TravisTX 5 points6 points ago

I wonder what James' ambition is, which includes blondes.

[–]Bobo_dude16 5 points6 points ago

Charleston Reppin!

[–]EasternFitz 9 points10 points ago

Why did they put the address in the year book?

[–]I_CAPE_RATS 10 points11 points ago

Bragging...?

[–]mwproductions 9 points10 points ago

Can someone explain what all the numbers mean?

[–]Fatty_mcGoob 6 points7 points ago

The grade that he was in for that class. 1-freshman 4-senior

[–]poppyduke 9 points10 points ago

My former boss is Colbert's sister in law. She told me that he was always a weird kid, and that it wasn't until after high school that he and his wife became buds in a drama club (I think), and then got together.

[–]llcoolbean87 9 points10 points ago

I would be a weird kid too if my dad and two brothers died in a plane crash. Bet they would be proud to see how he turned out.

[–]BarneyBent 3 points4 points ago

Dammit. Can't tell if satire.

[–]meltedfaces 3 points4 points ago

My dad went to school with steven but never talked to him because he was older than steven. :( missed oppertunities

[–]derpymao 3 points4 points ago

He is such a dreamboat.

[–]yep45 3 points4 points ago

Rowdy Club

uh oh, look out guys!

[–]deja-vu-comment 12 points13 points ago

I'd be his friend.

.

[–]EmbarrassingMother 35 points36 points ago

I'd have hit that in HS!

[–]Jakoman7 55 points56 points ago

Gosh mom, you're so embarrassing!

[–]aldude3 6 points7 points ago

Hey! Leave your sister alone.

[–]tesla3327 3 points4 points ago

You see he actually had friends... The kids who didn't have friends wouldn't have "nobody loves me" as their favorite saying... Theirs tends to be stuff like "live long and prosper", "would you like a jelly baby", or "may the force be with you"

[–]homeless_man_jogging 5 points6 points ago

Or in the case of some loner I used to go to school with. "I'm going to make a of ton of money and then you'll all work for me". Or something to that effect but much creepier.

[–]dydxexisex 2 points3 points ago

Wow so many clubs

[–]Lemurrific 2 points3 points ago

Those sick fucks have no idea how much hurtful "non-entity" is.

[–]DaRkSkIbBy 0 points1 point ago

Finally a Tyrone that's got his shit together!

[–]Mintopia 2 points3 points ago

the best part is when it says "can be found:alone"

[–]BreakDownSphere 1 point2 points ago

Ambitions: Make a friend. Never thought he'd host a television show.

[–]mentaculus 2 points3 points ago

This made my day! He should go back to being called "backbone" or "lightning".

Also, the fact that he was in the astronomy club--nice!

[–]I_would_hit_that_[!] 0 points1 point ago

I'll be your friend, Stephen. I'll be your friend.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 2 points3 points ago

I find that entire thing either incredibly cocky, or a giant "Fuck You" to his classmates. Either way, he should have won "Most likely to be the only reason you're nostalgic about this school". Cheers Colbert, you fucking nailed it.

[–]D0J0 2 points3 points ago

He had hysterical wit even way back then.
The irony t'wixt the words and pics is a 10.

[–]nightninja56 2 points3 points ago

WTF is a "Rowdy Club"

[–]Psymon_Armour 2 points3 points ago

Tyrone finally got it together.

[–]Snuhmeh 4 points5 points ago

What is a whimp?

[–]Barret_VII 3 points4 points ago

He must have achieved his ambitions, he's the host of one of the most loved talk shows in the entire country now, can't imagine that he's alone that much any more.

[–]Mastrik 4 points5 points ago

It's almost like he was born a badass or something. It's rare to see such badassery in one so young, much less retain it into middle age.

[–]Pippinpoop 4 points5 points ago

Looks like someone found all the dragon balls

[–]OctapusGarden 2 points3 points ago

Put this in ladyboners right now.

[–]pittsburghbiscuit 0 points1 point ago

House on the Battery even in the 70s is pretty swank address. Two odd things, 1)Porter-Gaud is Episcopalian, not Catholic. But the establishment in Charleston is Episcopalian, so that's where you send your kid when you have the money. 2) What school yearbook publishes your home address? Way to put that poor kid on scholarship from North Charleston in his place.

[–]kbergstr 2 points3 points ago

Pg is non denominational/ episcopal. While it has Chapel, it's not a big deal to be of a different denomination if you have the cash to pay (the right address doesn't hurt though.)

[–]ThatBeardedCarGuy 1 point2 points ago

His sense of humor comes off as somewhat emo.

[–]RICH_LITTLE -3 points-2 points ago

Looks like he switched to timeline.

[–]Kenzo-san 0 points1 point ago

that's the most forever alone bio hahah

[–]RKCKickers 0 points1 point ago

Makes me proud that he went to the same College as I do!

[–]Xanthan81 0 points1 point ago

Is he squeezing Paul Rudd's face?

[–]4LostSoulsinaBowl 0 points1 point ago

Nice house he grew up in.

[–]Paradoxmoa -1 points0 points ago

In High School: "Shit Tyrone, get it together."

Now: "Shit Tyrone, got it together."

[–]dumbducky 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit I walk past Stephen Colbert's childhood home all the time.

[–]skynxx 0 points1 point ago

Gold!!!

[–]TatataTopherface 1 point2 points ago

Stephen Tyrone Colbert on the O'Reilly Factor- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QquTUR9nbC4

[–]thepezzyone 0 points1 point ago

does anyone else want to hear him sing now...? (says he was in the glee club)

[–]funkydo -1 points0 points ago

And friends? (I'm realizing that everyone looks like everyone if you stretch it. But those ones stood out.)

[–]Hakoten 0 points1 point ago

Get your shit together, Tyrone.

[–]patio87 -1 points0 points ago

[–]peppersmith67 0 points1 point ago

[–]bryan_sensei 0 points1 point ago

Colbert is Max Fisher.

[–]Biinaryy 0 points1 point ago

Well Colbert, you sure have fulfilled your ambitions and more.

[–]crocodileheart 0 points1 point ago

Charlie Bartlett

[–]The_Turts 1 point2 points ago

TIL Stephen Colbert's middle name is the same as my first name! I'm not the only white Tyrone!

[–]xanatoth 1 point2 points ago

Dude got famous just being himself...

[–]Luciernaga_ 0 points1 point ago

Aw, I'll be your friend, Stephen!

[–]nurseAkali 0 points1 point ago

I like the lack of concern in including an address for everyone...

[–]Ballsdeepinreality 1 point2 points ago

Not a single comment about glee club. Is that what I think it is?

[–]NowWaitJustAMinute 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, James Walker was totally cooler. I mean Varsity, guys, varsity.

[–]idonteatbigmacs 0 points1 point ago

What is the Rowdy Club?

[–]MarcusVWario 0 points1 point ago

Tyrone got it together. Good for him. Also, REPOST!

[–]CRAGEWRAITH 1 point2 points ago

It saddens me that his one ambition was to make a friend.

I'd have been your friend Stephen. we'd go out play stickball in the backlot, and eventually we'd build up a rowdy gang of neighborhood kids who we'd meet up with every day after school to play stick ball.

One day we would lose your old man's babe ruth autographed ball I'd accidentally hit it over the fence. we'd work real hard to get it back.

You'd end up pulling a fast one on the local life guard, getting us all banned from the pool for life. every time our group would walk past her though, she'd look at you and smile.

We'd do dip at the carnival, and throw up on the sizzler...

We'd have been such good friends that some day they would have to make a movie about all of our escapades.

I'd watch the hell out of that movie.

[–]Notaniphone 0 points1 point ago

I saw this last year. On Reddit. And I'm fucking Australian!!

[–]QuantumTycoon 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one that finds that far too similar to an RPG stat block?

[–]LynchEngineLeper -1 points0 points ago

Is that Josh Brolin on the lower right?

[–]Imtheone457 0 points1 point ago

that format looks so.. familiar

[–]psychocoyote 0 points1 point ago

Damn Tyrone got his shit together

[–]Secrete_Persona 1 point2 points ago

Where is the gif of Fry, Zap and Kif smiling then not then smiling then not.

I couldn't tell if he was joking or not. I would laugh then feel bad thinking he might have been serious. Then laugh again saying naw, then feel bad.

[–]Montygue 0 points1 point ago

What's up with the Entered 6?

[–]danceydancetime 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand all of the numbers...

[–]BongGyver -1 points0 points ago

do believe that's college not high school

[–]the_trepverter -1 points0 points ago

Get it together foreveralone!

[–]alastor136 0 points1 point ago

I wonder what 'Rowdy Club' does on weekends...

[–]AbuAsiyah 0 points1 point ago

When people say "get it together Tyrone" My expectation usually stops at imagining that Tyrone would dress nicer and say hello to people instead of saying 'gimme your wallet bitch'.

But never had I imagined this, good for you Tyrone. Good for you.

[–]Shumuu 0 points1 point ago

Repost.

[–]scootter82 0 points1 point ago

Tyrone!

[–]bbrick33 0 points1 point ago

Tyrone finally got his shit together

[–]marac2803 0 points1 point ago

Tyrone really did do something with himself...

[–]sirsasana 0 points1 point ago

Wow, he lived on East Battery? Didn't realize his family was old Charleston wealthy. Not that I ever bothered to look up anything regarding his upbringing.

[–]magentalovely 0 points1 point ago

Colbert was in the National Forensic League? Awww yeah, we're not all losers

[–]ZebubXIII 0 points1 point ago

looks like tyrone always had his shit together.

[–]Jetstreamer 0 points1 point ago

Right down the street from me.

[–]caroline_ 0 points1 point ago

Man, I regret that I wasn't in more clubs in school. They just seem like a good time! And how it must build up your repertoire! Drat.

[–]Pykoh 0 points1 point ago

Shit, tyrone!

[–]casteroil36 1 point2 points ago

Phwoar! I see he was always devilishly handsome.

[–]GingerRaceFTW 0 points1 point ago
