Last week, I posted another comic here (the tale of the Abîmor)... And thanks to the amazing Reddit effect, all sort of cool thing happened.

The main being a contact with the very cool guys from Small Batch Comics, a recent publishing group coming from the ComicBookCollabs subreddit, promoting young authors from everywhere and selling collection of their shorts through Indy-Planet.

It's hard to express how precious these kind of opportunities are for european beginners like us. To find a public to show these very niche wtf comics like that, moreover, an international audience... it's just... Great.

Being actually read is the best feeling in the world.

[–]pavel_lishin 144 points145 points ago

You drew the submission? It was fantastic! I want more. MORE. Be successful, damnit, so I can have more.

[–]John_Norad[S] 357 points358 points ago

(Oups, I forgot, you can find all the one we've done until now here - and I'm just the writer for those)

[–]MrAsymo 72 points73 points ago

Holy fuck, these are awesome!

[–]poptart2nd 37 points38 points ago

so you're the motherfucker who scared the piss out of me?

[–]dancepartythethird 2 points3 points ago

great read, thanks

[–]Birdslapper 35 points36 points ago

seriously do more

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Chadwag 32 points33 points ago

I beg to disagree! I believe they gave it an ominous Grimm Brothers style atmosphere! Bu that's just my opinion!

[–]badphish94 6 points7 points ago

I really liked the first 4. The lake one and Herbert felt kind of meh. For such short comics, the story really developed quickly with such little dialogue. Love the art-style, too.

[–]jayd16 6 points7 points ago

I dunno, I really liked the lake one too. Although it was meh until I had the aha moment when I scrolled back up and realized the man still had his ring.

[–]Lazerpig 2 points3 points ago

I missed that entirely until I read your comment. It made the story much better.

[–]LOVEKREWz0r 2 points3 points ago

I ... I still don't understand it.

[–]Derekristow 3 points4 points ago

(spoiler) He lost his wife to that lake.

[–]rkwhitney 3 points4 points ago

Assuming you're serious:

He lost something precious in the lake, and in that frame it showed a picture of a wedding ring. Earlier in the comic, it showed him still wearing his ring. Assuming that he still has his ring, and there's another ring at the bottom of the lake, one could assume that the "precious thing" he lost to the lake was his wife.

[–]zman0900 10 points11 points ago

Wow, really good stuff. About shit my pants at the end of Abimor.

[–]CommentsAndShit 5 points6 points ago

Oh my fucking god the Abimor. The last panel gave me goosebumps. Well done. Seriously, well done. Thank you.

[–]heh_wut 4 points5 points ago

Abimor made me look over my shoulder...

[–]CodeMcK 9 points10 points ago

That first story was amazing! Is there an English translation for the Herbert story thing?

[–]John_Norad[S] 21 points22 points ago

I don't understand... The link provided is this one http://www.realitybis.com/herbert and this should link to the english version... What do you get? It keeps bugging I'm afraid...

[–]Insanefoo 6 points7 points ago

Hmm I was going to ask the same thing. Your link sent me to it in English, but when I typed it in manually from the comic it was in French.

[–]lagmaster2000 8 points9 points ago

Yes, more! Please do not stop doing what you are doing, it is amazing.

[–]KidCaine 8 points9 points ago

Shit man! Keep making these!

[–]Shit_Tsunami 4 points5 points ago

What do i do with all these feels? :(

[–]catnipassian 2 points3 points ago

I should be doing math right now, but these are so cool.

[–]cursed_deity 4 points5 points ago

this stuff could be a tv show like the twillight zone.

[–]bagadees 1 point2 points ago

Great ideas man, how did you get involved with this? I'd love to take part in this or something like it, if possible.

[–]skyman724 48 points49 points ago

OC IS SUCCEEDING YES REDDIT KEEP IT UP

[–]kalamalahala 6 points7 points ago

So yeah, I mentioned this last go-round, but I would totally buy this. Do I just need to keep an eye on Small Batch Comics' website?

[–]gupsy 5 points6 points ago

This was fucking great. When he gets to the "god" figure I mentally groaned at the cliche, but the way it turns out is more than excellent.

[–]pleiades9 2 points3 points ago

Holy hell did I get creeped out after the Abimor story.

[–]Mr_McGrumpypants 2 points3 points ago

Fuuuuuuck. You again. I was wondering why I had you tagged as "Makes awesome comics". Now I'm glad I did!

[–]Wait_What_Happened 4 points5 points ago

As much as I love these, I dont feel like this is the right subreddit.

[–]Spoon_Badger 706 points707 points ago

That was really good,

It left me wanting more (or at least his backstory upto that point)

[–]petitepoupee 292 points293 points ago

Third panel he says "When I crawled out of that truck I thought I was crazy", implying an accident of some sort.

Actually, I rather like the style where the reader is thrown into the story as it progresses without any exposition. It creates a certain amount of frustration that makes you empathize with the character. He too was just thrown into this new world.

The very last two panels are interesting. Here he thinks he has finally found the answer, the reason for all of his suffering, the end to his journey, only to find that it is another shift. He has no choice, he has to keep moving, for eternity perhaps. To me, this reminded me of life sometimes. We get tired, and angry, and frustrated, but we can only move on.

I think the man is in purgatory, so actually, he can't "move on". I think the lack of a back story allows the reader to interpret a lot, which makes the story interesting.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 80 points81 points ago

the literary term for what you describe as the reader being "thrown into the story as it progresses" is called medias res.

[–]kitsune_ 10 points11 points ago

I always thought it was in medias res

[–]petitepoupee 14 points15 points ago

Thank you! I have never formally studied literature beyond a couple of college courses, but I enjoy reading and I find myself critically analyzing movies, books, and panels such as this one.

[–]AetherIsWaiting 5 points6 points ago

It comes naturally to me now. I've never taken any college/university english courses, but my high school taught me well I suppose. Why don't you take more lit courses? If you like it, you should do it.

[–]NiceToss 9 points10 points ago

Also those are psychedelic mushrooms in the last panel.

[–]fluffbeast 0 points1 point ago

people are getting real metaphysical with this, Im pretty sure it's just a shroom joke.

[–]MasterBistro 0 points1 point ago

"When I crawled out of the truck, I thought I was crazy." What is that supposed to mean then?

[–]NightHawk929 16 points17 points ago

I think the girl appearing and then quickly disappearing says a lot as well. We know a lot of people in our lives, but a lot of the time it's just for a short while. We need to appreciate the time we have with them while we can.

[–]CDClock 5 points6 points ago

i think the guy just took too much allergy medication

[–]nachoman456 12 points13 points ago

Good analysis, I agree with the point you're making. Also though, I don't think it's entirely likely that the message is solely about the futility of escape from reality, but may also say something about the inevitability of death, and the scope of life before it. Life is any and every combination of fates, which he experiences one after another. This rest that he searches for, he won't find it until he dies. Until the summation of all of his life and it's events have been tallied. Until then, he's just along for the ride, and will have to keep moving on.

[–]petitepoupee 7 points8 points ago

I imagined this poor soul damned to an eternity of a shifting universe, but your interpretation offers him the hope that his wandering will end one day! I imagined a lost soul who has died violently and too young, who has left behind a wife and a young child. He's desperately clinging to that past life, but it keeps shifting because it no longer exists.

[–]HannibalLex 13 points14 points ago

You guys are all missing the big picture. Everything is a build up to the last 3 panels where the author reveals everything. He chose, if not subconsciously, that he would rather fight 100 duck sized ducks. Screw duck sized horses, and horse sized ducks. He's searching for normalcy.

Edit: spelling.

[–]nachoman456 2 points3 points ago

the eternal question- it has been answered!

[–]mcawkward 3 points4 points ago

In medias res

[–]5erif 42 points43 points ago

[–]StickSauce 107 points108 points ago

I think that a back story hidden within the narrative as it progresses would be better.

[–]AmberLion 33 points34 points ago

Planescape: Torment in a nutshell.

With that I agree whole-heartedly.

[–]blackspotr 16 points17 points ago

it sorta works well without a backstory. whatever, i also thought it was awesome.

[–]Nrthstar 10 points11 points ago

Agreed, I don't see why this belongs in wtf, I thought it was quite brilliant.

[–]Loap 3 points4 points ago

It left a smile on my face.

[–]spankymuffin 3 points4 points ago

It left me wanting more, but I think a backstory would take away from it.

[–]0x6D653E2A 4 points5 points ago

I love this comic. It reminds me of something that happened recently.

I've been best friends with someone for over 10 years now. Things have changed over the last couple of years. So much so, that she doesn't seem to be the same person, and we no longer seem to have much in common.

This parallels the comic in the sense that things are always changing and sometimes the best thing that we can do is to move forward. If you just move on, the changing scenery doesn't feel so out of place.

[–]Roached_N_Weeded 4 points5 points ago

Facking A'S straight it was good! this was the first link I've ever bothered to save!

[–]whiterungaurd 2 points3 points ago

The next inception like movie.

[–]DIRTY_CRAPPED_BRIEFS 57 points58 points ago

This works ok until the floor becomes lava...

[–]BakulaSelleck92 57 points58 points ago

Simple, stand on the couch.

[–]chaos_control 4 points5 points ago

Or hang on to the ledge.

[–]Seraphim_kid 54 points55 points ago

The answer to this madness is quack? Wonderful, it all makes sense now

[–]Useless_Wooden_Boy 32 points33 points ago

42.

[–]vyllex 9 points10 points ago

Yeah but what's the question to which 42 is the answer?

[–]biitchhplease 8 points9 points ago

After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that the question is "What is 84 divided by two?"

It's hard to get my work out there, though, because most scientists these days are arguing that the real question is "How old is Queen Latifah?"

[–]Useless_Wooden_Boy 3 points4 points ago

We're working on it.

[–]brianpv 3 points4 points ago

How many roads must a man walk down?

[–]Shit_Tsunami 5 points6 points ago

Im not high enough for this shit.

[–]Zesoft 19 points20 points ago

Reminds me of this comic http://www.viruscomix.com/page567.html

[–]Im_not_pedobear 0 points1 point ago

huh that has an unsatisfying end.

[–]Ryswick 4 points5 points ago

Damn, was that long.

I think the ending was fine.

At first I thought the whole anomaly idea was a joke and was only used to make the professor look crazy. As the story progresses it kinda fits, not into something I'd buy, but I get the idea. When he starts mentioning that three whole leaves could've changed on a tree, or just three cells and we would all be none the wiser, I get all Descartes on this shit and be like, "we can't know for sure, to just dismiss it as untrue would be pure bigotry." Finally, the ultimate anomaly happens, a change so huge that it affects reality itself down to our past and memories. Now I realize the scope of the "anomalies" and it really brings the whole story together in my opinion.

[–]Frase 15 points16 points ago

Mescaline must be intense

[–]CreepyCoyote 4 points5 points ago

It's not that intense. It's a bit more subtle.

[–]ICantDoThisALone 99 points100 points ago

Why is this WTF? That's beautiful.

[–]t0mcat 46 points47 points ago

Because it comes with no context. It's built to be 'wtf'; you're supposed to wonder what (the fuck) is going on, and then you're supposed to build a narrative of your own, where you decide what's happening to this man.

[–]Maeby78 30 points31 points ago

...which makes it more WTF than most of what gets posted here.

[–]_my_troll_account 19 points20 points ago

I don't come to /r/WTF much, but is it a rule or something that one of the top comments has to say "Why is this WTF?" or "This isn't WTF!" or "Not WTF."??

[–]monkeys_pass 4 points5 points ago

It's a pretty recent development, and it's very irritating. My hobby: go through and down-vote anyone complaining. Yes, I see the irony in my comment.

[–]julianicesarini 25 points26 points ago

This is awesome. It comes across to me as an exaggerated depiction on what depression is like. Well, what it's like for me.

[–]planarshift 11 points12 points ago

If I saw this as a metaphor for life, does that mean I'm depressed? >.<

[–]BelugaTaquito 8 points9 points ago

Yep! Being overstimulated, never connecting with anybody or learning anything useful, having an adventure you didn't really sign up for.

[–]siliconlife 2 points3 points ago

I think a substantial number of people (including myself) strongly identify with the character. There's something to that, perhaps depression, perhaps something else. The story is clearly an allegory for life, and the way that man lives his life is similar to my life during bad times.

[–]bomtokem 2 points3 points ago

That's how I saw it, too. The world changes with or without your input and when you isolate yourself from the society, life often feels more like watching some bizarre movie than being part of an interactive experience. You have no control over the outcome, all you can do is observe the chaos as it unfolds. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's scary, sometimes you care, sometimes you don't, sometimes you wish you were a part of it, sometimes you wish you could watch something else instead, sometimes you just want to turn it off altogether.

[–]5outh 11 points12 points ago

There should be a video game that follows this premise.

[–]somecleverusername62 2 points3 points ago

Sorta reminded me of this

[–]voltriuc 7 points8 points ago

i love how he says he eats food before it changes and then he is surrounded by it in the last panel and doesn't touch it.

[–]StarBarbershop 4 points5 points ago

I like this in the same way I like the DyE Fantasy. Weird but awesome in a sort of way.

Here is the DyE Fantasy for reference. Massively NSFW, possibly NSFL if you are impressionable.

[–]mleharris44 2 points3 points ago

I read "if everything was shitting.."

[–]_demetri_ 6 points7 points ago

I feel like this guy more than I want to... Friends, family, places with memories just keep changing. The meaning of things keep shifting. This is nothing less than an allegory of the way the world is.

[–]WendyLRogers3 7 points8 points ago

I read an odd story once, from a man who began his trip in an airplane that was about to crash. In terror, he shut his eyes and told himself that he was dreaming. Then to his surprise he woke up in bed, a different person, next to a strange woman.

Again he was surprised, because he suddenly knew the entire context of his new life, his new history, who she was and everything, with clarity. And, he noted, because he could not "refresh" the memories of his old life, they became increasingly tenuous. Yet he remembered the big things.

He did everything he was supposed to, going to work in an office, where everything was familiar and he knew what was expected of him. And this lasted about a month. Then one day, driving home from work, a large tanker truck was in an accident, and was burning and coming right at him. And he shut his eyes... And woke up in yet another life, as another person.

In our reality. And at the time of his writing he said he had been here about three years, at first spending a lot of time journaling his former lives of every detail he could remember. He said his first life has really faded, so he can only remember the really big stuff, like the airplane about to crash.

But he has no real answers, and is wondering if he will stay here for the rest of his life, or just disappear in the blink of an eye.

[–]VisualBasic 4 points5 points ago

That sounds interesting. I'm googling it now.

[–]mysticRight 4 points5 points ago

Let us know if you find it. It sounds fascinating.

[–]Chaofawn 2 points3 points ago

me too.

[–]Anonyberry 2 points3 points ago

Do you happen to know the source?

[–]twodayslate 2 points3 points ago

This isn't something I would normally expect out of WTF (no gore etc) but it sure left me saying "WTF".

[–]angelicvixen 0 points1 point ago

I find this legitimately interesting. What is it and where did you find it?

[–]S_T_A_R_F_O_X 2 points3 points ago

Oh... I get it. The ducks are trying to show him the shrooms!

[–]xXxBluESkiTtlExXx 2 points3 points ago

I really feel like this would be an excellent candidate for continuation. To quote StickSauce before me: "I think that a back story hidden within the narrative as it progresses would be better." Would love to watch you slowly unveil this man's life and character within this surreal and transient setting.

[–]Wareya 1 point2 points ago

I love it!

[–]Anti_Antonym 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I'm not sure if it was your intention, but I found this to be incredibly symbolic of social and psychological issues of life. The surroundings, the people... they all change, and the man must "move on." If he keeps moving--adapting and evolving--the shifting background does not seem as weird.

Anyway, beautiful work.

[–]cmoonbeam1 0 points1 point ago

This makes my head hurt and I kind of want to cry now.

[–]mindevolve 1 point2 points ago

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that the style of this comic is reminiscent of Lucifer, a spin-off The Sandman. Even the font and word bubble of God is the same.

It's a good read, and your character reminds me of Elaine Belloc's biological father. Nice job.

[–]MrRagston 0 points1 point ago

Thanks to me being high. I understood that like I never should have. As a high person, he is making me start to question the existence of my being, the relevance of it in a world that is ever shifting, a world like our own. No matter how much change will come, time will move continuously forward, regardless of deviation. Time will adapt, with you, and without you when you are gone. In that situation, which is here, we, as people, play so little of a part.

[–]yumagamo 0 points1 point ago

Good read. But it bothers me his clothes, shoes, etc. are conveniently exceptions and don't seem to transform.

[–]Omegatron64 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't call this so much "wtf," as it is a very unique way of describing life today, with all its confusion.

[–]X_Monster_Dude_X 0 points1 point ago

Shit.

[–]dakanektr 1 point2 points ago

But the people I meet always end up transforming. So why bother?

For some reason, I think this is the most important line of the comic.

[–]Will_shred 1 point2 points ago

that's more depressing than anything else.

[–]Tylerkcchew 0 points1 point ago

Amanita Muscaria.

[–]Escapethisrock 1 point2 points ago

Really a fantastic analysis, but I would additionally like to point out the last panel, where the multitude of ducks in the bazaar sit. The woven baskets strewn about them & enveloping most of the foreground appear to be filled with amanita muscaria fungi.

A trip-state coma, perhaps? An anti-drugged driving message?

[–]captainzigzag 0 points1 point ago
