Your dad is such an asshole, wanting you to get an advanced degree so you can get a better job.

[–]thewanderingangus 4 points5 points ago

What is a super senior?

[–]new_math 2 points3 points ago

someone who is in their fifth year of college to earn a BA. It happens a lot to transfer students.

[–]tyme 2 points3 points ago

What are you when you've taken 7 years to get a BS?

[–]V4refugee 0 points1 point ago

Probably single.

[–]new_math 0 points1 point ago

A part time student I hope haha O.o

[–]tyme 4 points5 points ago

Nope.

I was full-time. Transferred and had a really shitty 2 semesters that killed my GPA.

[–]new_math 0 points1 point ago

lol ouch, that's rough. At least you finished though; that's more than most people can say.

[–]tyme 1 point2 points ago

It was a rough time in my life.

[–]Scarynig 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry buddy I feel your pain! I fucked up super hard and I am also on the 7 year plan. On my 5th right now, 22 years old with 60 credits. YOU ARE NEVER ALONE MY FRIEND.

[–]TwoLegsJoe 0 points1 point ago

Hey, that's me!

[–]nirvanianlaughs -2 points-1 points ago

5th year of high school if you didn't graduate your senior year

[–]Flexappeal 19 points20 points ago

Funny, OP, I think your dad is gonna do that exact reaction when you come asking for money after not being able to land a solid job since you don't have your Master's.

Welcome to 2012.

[–]Magnora 3 points4 points ago

Not true, depends on what his degree is.

[–]AaronAizel[S] 5 points6 points ago

Electrical Engineering

[–]crucifier 1 point2 points ago

I definitely know that feel. I really enjoy electrical engineering, but I really do not enjoy having 80+ hours/week of doing projects, assignments and working. Last year as a super senior is underway now.

[–]Flexappeal 1 point2 points ago

inb4 it's liberal arts.

[–]prepend 0 points1 point ago

Here's the flow chart: Is STEM?->job; else->Master's/Basement.

[–]Magnora -3 points-2 points ago

Not really. Depends if you have connections

[–]prepend 2 points3 points ago

Is joke. If you have connections it doesn't matter what degree you have.

[–]Magnora -2 points-1 points ago

That's not really true either...

[–]KristinnEs 0 points1 point ago

What is STEM?

I finished my engineering bachelors a couple of months back and had landed a job within a month of graduation.

[–]Protagoris 5 points6 points ago

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

[–]ailorn 2 points3 points ago

Not true for all science degrees. A BA in Psychology is practically useless as anything other than just having a generic degree. I had to get a masters to be able to get a job practicing counseling.

[–]reflect25 1 point2 points ago

Well not all stems are equal. But generally speaking its sadly correct.

[–]V4refugee 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about most other psych majors but if you focus on behavior analysis they pretty much throw jobs at you if you have a BA.

[–]Arousingly_Awkward -2 points-1 points ago

A BA is practically useless.

FTFY

[–]navak 0 points1 point ago

You can get a BA in CS.

You can get a BS in Art History.

Then the difference might be a couple biology courses and chemistry with a lab.

You realize that, right?

[–]Arousingly_Awkward 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. I'm just being petty.

[–]navak 0 points1 point ago

Good. I guess we go our separate ways and bring pettiness to others now.

[–]KristinnEs 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, thanks for the explanation :)

[–]NyaR 5 points6 points ago

I think you're kind of funny for assuming that it is impossible to survive without higher education.

[–]jmbradley90 0 points1 point ago

You may have been brainwashed, friend. Degrees are pieces of paper. If you really want to learn, you can. The internet and libraries are great resources for the knowledge seekers. For the most part, all college does is train people to be faithful employees. If you think people can't survive 2012 without a Master's degree, you have been well conditioned by a society that wants you to spend more money (Master's more expensive than BA) and work unquestionably (get a Master's because you think you have to). By the way, most of the very wealthy didn't go to college. Degrees are for employees. An expensive little piece of paper that says you are a good little sheep who will do your job.

[–]tossedsaladandscram 1 point2 points ago

Uh... very very few career paths are aided by a masters.

[–]Flexappeal -2 points-1 points ago

Lol, back that up brah. Go ahead, show me a link. Employment statistics for 75k+ mean salary earners without a Masters or better. I'll wait.

[–]tossedsaladandscram 1 point2 points ago

All engineering degrees... Finance... CS...

I would love a link from you, chief, so I can know in what fields having a masters degree is of any real value. Educators, perhaps. Clinical psych probably as well. What else? If you're in a hard science, it's phd or nothing. If you're in tech, you've lost more by being out of the workforce for those years than you will command with the additional degree. Unless, perhaps, your undergrad degree isn't from an institution with significant enough prestige to merit initial employment.

[–]formulaten 0 points1 point ago

Semiconductors. All engineering positions we have require a masters level education. Basically anything above working on the floor requires a masters. All the places I looked for engineering that aren't intern level say that a masters is required.

Edit: Source-I am a semiconductor engineer.

[–]tossedsaladandscram 1 point2 points ago

Hm, all my EE friends are fully employed. I guess I have one who is coterming in EE, but only because our school will pay for it and he doesn't want to get a job.

[–]formulaten 0 points1 point ago

Well I'm not saying that you can't get a job with a BS, just that the people that are designing and testing new products with EE degrees are pretty much all MS or a few that have 7+ years prior experience.

[–]steezenskis 5 points6 points ago

that sucks. everyone i know who is graduating would kill for another year before the real world kicks in

[–]tadowguy 10 points11 points ago

Guess you guys had an easy degree. Do you know how awesome it was to a) get money and b) not have homework once I graduated?

[–]KristinnEs 0 points1 point ago

Amen brutha! Finally I am getting some real food :D

[–]AeroRandy 0 points1 point ago

I wish my mother was like you, making me feel guilty for wanting to not got to college and what not.

[–]DesuDesu17 3 points4 points ago

That was what I thought as well. I too was a "super senior." (Thought I wanted to double major in Graphic Design and International Business, so I took art requirements my first two years of school, terrible idea.) I graduated in December 2009 (Unemployment was near its peak for the 2008-2012 period then), school life at my undergraduate university was such a bubble community that I had no real idea what was going on in the outside world. I thought that after I graduated I'd get a job for a few years and then start my Masters. I remained largely unemployed through the end of 2011. The little jobs I got between graduation and then weren't fulfilling at all, were dead ends, and paid next to nothing. I just now started my MBA program in August of 2012, I could have had my Master's over and done with by now and be moving on to bigger and better things. If I had it to do over again I would. I say go for your Master's, especially if your parents are willing to help with the bill. Even if they aren't, I think it'll be worth it for you in the long run.

Tldr: Do it.

[–]Tispower 1 point2 points ago

As someone on placement as part of my degree currently working and having real responsability, making an actual difference and being paid for it I totally understand. Just want to get out of education and make a living!

[–]hpfanficluvr 1 point2 points ago

I totally read it as "This was my erection when..." I think I need to start living away from the computer more?

[–]tapdncingchemist -1 points0 points ago

Hah, I have the opposite problem. I'm graduating with a bachelor's and masters, yet I want to go get my PhD and my parents don't quite understand. Even though I'll be paid to do so and it's effectively a job (albeit, somewhat low-paying).

[–]thundersnuggle 1 point2 points ago

You're technically not a Super Senior until they cut off your ability for student loans/financial aid as an undergrad. They told me that my last semester when I had reached the maximum amount of credit hours allowed as an undergrad.

[–]renotime 1 point2 points ago

Go to work and get someone to pay for it later on.

Or you could just say fuck it and be happy with the 6 figures you will be making in a few years.

[–]Diffie-Hellman 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, it's not a bad idea. Of course I think we'll still be in this mess to years from now.

[–]killuhk 0 points1 point ago

I know that feel, bro. I am now starting my 6th year. I have had senioritis for the past 3 years. It's ridiculous. ....And I'm going to go for my Master's after. DANG IT.

[–]16bitgamer 0 points1 point ago

For the love of all things, do it. The "real world" sucks such a vast quantity of ass it's indescribable.

[–]login2downvote 0 points1 point ago

I fucking hate the phrase "go for my master's degree". Like you can only get one or something.

[–]xMissCupcake 0 points1 point ago

I wasn't sure what a super senior was. I was hoping it was a senior that developed super powers. I was greatly disappointed.

[–]simjanes2k 0 points1 point ago

You'll be sorry later in life. Sorry for the bad news.

[–]jeoncs 0 points1 point ago

r/reactiongifs ....

[–]ColKlink007 0 points1 point ago

A job is worse.

[–]beyerch 0 points1 point ago

Let me tell you something....

I was in a huge hurry to graduate and get to work and I thought I'd go back later and get my MS and eventually Ph.D.

Once you get in the working world, sht happens and it gets a lot harder to go back and get those degrees if it's something *YOU really want.

Food for thought.

[–]LordSlayne 0 points1 point ago

Super senior sounds like super saiyan.

[–]willstone 0 points1 point ago

If you're sick of college I think you're doing it wrong...

[–]mcfrank 0 points1 point ago

you should try 8... or at least I hope 8 since I changed my major 6 years in

[–]ShroudIII 0 points1 point ago

I have a Masters Degree. I would not recommend it unless you HAVE to have it for your profession.

[–]darkain13 0 points1 point ago

I am a computer tech working on a broadband tech support wih no future just to pay my bills. Stop whining and get that master's.

[–]RICH_LITTLE 0 points1 point ago

Jacob is just mad because he was only in like one scene in ME3.

[–]Mikheilm 2 points3 points ago

Uhh wut?

[–]Badhorsie10 1 point2 points ago

As someone who got a BS and tried working for a shit job for few years at 10$/hr....and then decided I needed to get my MS and now makes close to $100,000/year:

Just wait, you'll see.

[–]Henron 1 point2 points ago

Damn, I have no degree and just left a $10/hr job...

[–]Badhorsie10 1 point2 points ago

Well, this WAS 20 years ago. I suppose minimum wage has gone up by now....

(Yea, there are some Redditors who are 40+;-) but we are still sexay!)

[–]Diffie-Hellman 0 points1 point ago

Considering this myself. Only a handful of people in my field have a MS. It would help get me into the position I want without having to spend years climbing the ladder.

[–]LuckyDuck77 -2 points-1 points ago

Oh you're bummed out that it took you a while to get a college degree? SHUT THE FUCK UP AARON! YOU SOUND LIKE A FUCKING DOUCHEBAG!

[–]bobbybusche 0 points1 point ago

So do you.
