This is so incredibly mildly interesting I'm having a mildgasm.

[–]Hysteriia 97 points98 points ago

oh... oh..... OHHHH......... meh

[–]imacatmeowmeow 18 points19 points ago

Hipster banana. Ripens before the others.

[–]NewDirtyBastard 8 points9 points ago

Better ripen before it's too mainstream.

[–]Motorsheep 3 points4 points ago

It only ripened ironically

[–]Kinch_ 1 point2 points ago

It's a metaphor for my high school years.

[–]WalrusMaximus 3 points4 points ago

This gave me a raging semi.

[–]iwantafunnyname 88 points89 points ago

I wish all bananas did this. Just have one ripen every day. I never eat them fast enough.

[–]_alkaline 20 points21 points ago

Put them in the fridge once they are ripe, the skin will turn brown but the banana will slow down its ripening so it doesn't go straight from ripe to overripe.

[–]RommelTJ 13 points14 points ago

But then the skin is brown and icky.... eeeeeewwww

[–]syds 8 points9 points ago

one brown spot = thrown out!

[–]FireAndSunshine 8 points9 points ago

But banana bread!

[–]KittenPurrs 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. I'd never eat a brown banana, but any cook worth their sauce knows the sweetness of over-ripened bananas makes banana bread amazing. (I think I'm maybe two banana references away from no longer believing that's a legit word.)

[–]RommelTJ 2 points3 points ago

Hah! I also subscribe to /r/frugal. I will eat all my food before I throw anything away.

[–]NewDirtyBastard 1 point2 points ago

Pretty much the biggest reason I get food poisoning. (Not knocking your frugality. I just wait 4 weeks later to eat that slice of pizza)

[–]Caderly 0 points1 point ago

Lots of little brown spots are the best though!! They're so much tastier that way.

[–]TrixieDawn 0 points1 point ago

My boyfriend does this and just, yuck. Brown bananas.:(

[–]cramlikebram 0 points1 point ago

You can also freeze them overnight, the, throw them in a blender with some chocolate milk. Doesn't even need ice.

[–]thundershaft 6 points7 points ago

Separate them from the bunch. The pressure of them touching each other usually makes them bruise and get mushy faster.

[–]NotablyConventional 8 points9 points ago

I read the "pleasure" of them touching each other. Much better this way.

[–]Kubaker1 2 points3 points ago

Much better.

[–]upvoterss 7 points8 points ago

you need photoshop they will be yellow and perfect for life.

[–]RambleMan 1 point2 points ago

I do believe once they've been picked they are dead. You're eating dead fruit...DEAD!

[–]Sonoluminescent 5 points6 points ago

I'm going to jump in here and say, please, please, fucking please don't ever eat a green banana. I ate a green one that kinda had some yellow here and there and thought I would be fine. 20 minutes later, my stomach starts rumbling. Didn't think anything of it. 20 minutes after that I feel a little nauseated. 20 minutes after that I thought I had the flu or something and left work sick. Get home, piss out of my ass for the next 3 hours. Apparently the starch hasn't broken down into sugar in the banana and your body can't process it properly. It was really bad.

[–]PritongKandule -1 points0 points ago

On top of green bananas tasting really dry and horrible.

[–]Sonoluminescent 0 points1 point ago

It wasn't really dry, but it was a lot chewier than any banana ever should be....

[–]gowahoo 2 points3 points ago

This makes me wonder if what you ate was a banana at all...

[–]2parties1cup 1 point2 points ago

maybe this is a leaked prototype of the iBanana from Apple.

[–]the_television 91 points92 points ago

[–]Dapples[S] 38 points39 points ago

Not shopped. I promise.

[–]MixT 58 points59 points ago

[–]Dapples[S] 40 points41 points ago

Yes. This is my only reddit account and I wouldn't disgrace it with a hoax.

[–]MixT 36 points37 points ago

Ok, you have my trust.

[–]virginpresident 18 points19 points ago

Yours and the_television's look shopped

[–]MixT 7 points8 points ago

I'm going to let you in on a little secret....I suck at photoshop....

[–]soren_grey 6 points7 points ago

I believe OP, but am upvoting you anyway for your effort.

[–]the_television 3 points4 points ago

I know it's not photoshopped. I can tell by the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my life

[–]boinGfliP14 24 points25 points ago

Would anyone understand a Steins-Gate reference?

No? Alright then nvm.

[–]AskMeAboutPlants 13 points14 points ago

I got it, you're not alone.

[–]SleepyAnarchyZ 6 points7 points ago

I would my goodman.

[–]dankhimself 1 point2 points ago

This goodman?

[–]d8de4n 8 points9 points ago

I got it

[–]swaglikemine 3 points4 points ago

They will turn into jelly banana soon.

[–]kostmo 3 points4 points ago

[–]make_baloney 11 points12 points ago

Hm, this is interesting. Ripening fruit should become ripe more or less simultaneously. The ripening process in bananas is controlled by the hormone ethylene, and ethylene (a gas) itself is emitted during this process, speeding up the ripening of fruit around it. So, it is weird, based on color, that the process has not even started in the adjacent fruits.

Tip: If you want fruit to ripe faster, put it together with plants in the process of flowering, as flowers also emit ethylene, or together with other, more ripe, fruit.

[–]Purdy14 13 points14 points ago

It could have been an issue of the placement when being shipped. Perhaps the ripened banana was separated away from the others and nearer to other fruit that was ripe.

It doesn't look like it's been bent out of shape... But it's possible.

Or maybe OP knows about this ripening process and exposed 1 banana to the ethylene, while not exposing the rest of the bunch. /r/KarmaConspiracy

[–]ICantDoBackflips 6 points7 points ago

What if he were to put a bag around the one that ripened faster?

Does that actually work or is that bullshit?

[–]tojo940 2 points3 points ago

That should work as far as I know.

[–]ICantDoBackflips 6 points7 points ago

Well I'm gonna go buy some bananas and test it out.

[–]thefizzingwhizzbee 6 points7 points ago

Report back.

[–]dankhimself 1 point2 points ago

It works, I've done it. I assume it's because it traps in those gasses make_baloney was talking about. Makes a little Banana Dutch Oven.

[–]make_baloney 1 point2 points ago

Indeed it does!

[–]RambleMan 0 points1 point ago

When I want bananas to ripen faster I put another, already ripe banana across them. I don't know if it works, but I think it does and that's all that matters.

[–]Im_not_pedobear 1 point2 points ago

so technically If I want to age really really fast I have to surround myself with ethylene?

Or I become the worlds slowest murderer...

[–]PuerScelestus 3 points4 points ago

It would only work if you are a fruit. Tell me, do you have seeds in your center?

[–]Mielad 2 points3 points ago

More or less, around that area, yes..

[–]yurimxpxman 1 point2 points ago

It also helps to put the fruit in a paper bag so not as much of the ethylene escapes.

[–]KittenPurrs 2 points3 points ago

And add an apple. Apples are magic and somehow cause other produce to ripen/over-ripen more quickly. I believe it's because of the ethylene gas they release, but I'm far to lazy to google it right now.

Edit: Apparently I'm not too lazy... It's the high level of ethylene they release, and apparently avocados and pears also work well for the same reason.

[–]statuek 7 points8 points ago

I'm colorblind and it took me a full minute to figure out what this was about. Looking for dark spots :(

[–]marty_marshall 5 points6 points ago

neat

[–]OctopusBrine 2 points3 points ago

Ok so, if this actually real and not shooped, I have an explanation for this! Somewhere on the yellow banana that is not shown from this perspective there is a large gash or bruise. Damage to any part of the fruit makes the rest of the fruit ripen faster. Bananas produce ethylene gas when they are damaged (source).

[–]KittenPurrs 0 points1 point ago

You make me wanna shoop.

Partly because you provided relevant data, partly because that Salt 'n' Peppa song is now stuck in my head.

[–]Dapples[S] -1 points0 points ago

Awesome! I'm gonna go back to my buddy's apartment and check this out! Assuming of course that he hasn't eaten the banana...

[–]chicubs3794 1 point2 points ago

That banana is Alpha as fuck

[–]That1WeirdKid 3 points4 points ago

Overachieving banana?

[–]ChaGz15 3 points4 points ago

Over archiving banana.

[–]slackermanz 4 points5 points ago

Get it to the Library!

[–]ChaGz15 0 points1 point ago

Yes hurry before the banana SPLITS!

[–]dutch010 2 points3 points ago

That's an appealing banana.

[–]kyuukyuu 2 points3 points ago

Tutturu~

[–]jjbay 0 points1 point ago

OP, watch your back for angry physicists.

[–]SuperBananners 3 points4 points ago

I am SuperBananners and i approve of this picture.

[–]ZombieWrath 1 point2 points ago

Mother of god.

[–]exiled_one 1 point2 points ago

It's the choosen one!

[–]nubbled21 1 point2 points ago

Bananas are kinda like traffic lights...

[–]RambleMan 2 points3 points ago

Except the red. Kinda was a good choice of words. Bananas are also kinda like a box of crayons.

[–]nubbled21 1 point2 points ago

"Red means, 'Where the fuck did you get that banana?!'" -Mitch Hedberg

[–]ander594 0 points1 point ago

...But how do you know for sure?

[–]signspam 0 points1 point ago

Did you photoshoppe a banana? DID YOU!?

[–]zombiehippie 1 point2 points ago

over achiever at work

[–]NudeTayneMNW 1 point2 points ago

I bet the other bananas never hear the end of it from their parents either.

[–]CuntBelieveItsNotBtr 1 point2 points ago

I used to work at Price Chopper in the produce department. Happens more than you think.

[–]Dapples[S] 1 point2 points ago

I had to upvote you because I have also worked in the produce department of a grocery store. It's amazing what you can learn doing that, but I never saw this banana thing before.

[–]Androne 0 points1 point ago

His name was Micheal

[–]Proper_Drunk 0 points1 point ago

that banana's going places.

[–]AmadeusCrumb 0 points1 point ago

Is the yellow one Willem Dafoe?

[–]Riddlesex 1 point2 points ago

Bananas are shipped green, then artificially ripened with ethylene gas close to their point of sale. My father-in-law was a short-haul trucker for a regional grocery company, and often brought home improperly (over-, under-, or unevenly) gassed bananas for his family. A quick Google confirms that they weren't just falling off the back of the truck.

[–]BokehBurgher 0 points1 point ago

that's what she said.

[–]NPraisin 0 points1 point ago

You know how on a stop light, green means go and yellow means slow down? Well, with a banana, it's quite the opposite. Yellow means go, green means slow down. And red means where the fuck did you get that banana?

[–]jtcompound 0 points1 point ago

Which one?

[–]geosensation 0 points1 point ago

Couldn't you just wrap that single banana in a plastic bag of some sort and achieve the result here?

[–]boredmessiah 0 points1 point ago

This really belongs in /r/itookapicture

[–]MrMathamagician 0 points1 point ago

"The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long."

[–]TrixieDawn 1 point2 points ago

My 5 year old says OP put sunblock on the green bananas. Now you know.

[–]floppykittens -1 points0 points ago

photoshooped duuuh

[–]rbrink13 1 point2 points ago

Overachiever.

[–]TheEidolonReality 0 points1 point ago

r/conspiracy should have an explanation for this

[–]007T 0 points1 point ago

To replicate this: Put a tomato in a bag, place single banana from the bunch into the bag and close off the bag around the top of the banana. Ethylene gas produced by the tomato will encourage accelerated ripening for the banana in the bag.

[–]Motorsheep 0 points1 point ago

Bananas... now with Lymon™

[–]zombiej3sus 0 points1 point ago

Hipster banana. Yellow before it was cool.

[–]RabieBabies 0 points1 point ago

gel banana

[–]Superneutra -1 points0 points ago

Usain Bolt of the banana race

[–]Phlexonance 1 point2 points ago

It's more likely that the plant was a hybrid and the 1 yellow banana in the bunch is a different variety of bananas

[–]Dapples[S] 2 points3 points ago

That makes sense, but thankfully even if that is the case it is still mildly interesting!

[–]Phlexonance 1 point2 points ago

of course, I'd even say it's slightly more than mildly interesting

[–]Dapples[S] 4 points5 points ago

I almost posted it elsewhere simply because it might be TOO interesting. I like this subreddit though, it soothes me.

[–]Phlexonance 1 point2 points ago

the users here don't seem to appreciate facts though

[–]make_baloney 0 points1 point ago

Like a chimera plant? Could you back up your statement?

[–]make_baloney 0 points1 point ago

That's a bit smug. If you look at the pictue, you see that the bananas sit on the same cluster. A hybrid plant would have the same DNA in all cells. The variation in morphology and physiology within a hybrid multicellular organism would have the same basis as the variation in a non-hybrid.

A chimera, on the other hand, can have different genetic content in different cells, even within the same tissue and adjoining cells.

[–]gullibletrout[!] -2 points-1 points ago

Price Chopper I see. More than likely you are from upstate New York. I'm on to you OP...

[–]yetanotherx 3 points4 points ago

Considering I'm nowhere near upstate NY, and there's a Price Chopper right next to me, not as likely as you'd think.

[–]ninzo09 2 points3 points ago

There are Price Choppers in Canada

[–]mabonuob -2 points-1 points ago

x-post to /r/banana!
