It's amazing how apt this story is when you really think about it.

If the homeless/poor guy could find a job that paid $50 for a few hours work he wouldn't be homeless/poor. Basically, the republican is offering to over pay the little girl, and then the little girl...instead of realizing she's in an overly adventitious position not available to the poor person, instead blames the poor person.

Welcome to the Republican party, indeed.

... what?

The girl didn't blame anyone. She simply asked why a person in need of a job can't take one that's available.

The implication is that the poor guy wouldn't be poor if he was willing to work. The point is that a $50 offer for a couple hours work is extremely rare; even if he worked for this guy he still would be poor.

Its even more insidious than that. You think that a socially conservative person is going to trust a homeless person to be in their yard? Why, things might be stolen! Also, they might not be white!

The conservative mantra is 'Personal Accountability', but it is usually directed at others.

So, where did the girl "blame the poor person"?

The implication is that the poor guy wouldn't be poor if he was willing to work.

Yes; the implication is that the homeless man would be better off if he had a job. You think he wouldn't?

The point is that a $50 offer for a couple hours work is extremely rare

What point? Whose point? Where are you getting these ideas? How did you get that from what was posted? Did we even read the same story?

[–]dannylandulf 1 point2 points ago

If a job that pays $25 an hour was available to anyone willing to take the job...there wouldn't be a poverty problem. The reality is nothing even CLOSE to that exists for most of the population.

[–]Fairchild660 -1 points0 points ago

Oh, you're just trying to steer the discussion towards something unrelated.

[–]dannylandulf 0 points1 point ago

How so? That's the main point of the joke.

[–]Naldaen -1 points0 points ago

Not the main point of the joke at all. The $50 is an arbitrary amount. The man could have offered her $10 to do that, and the point would still stand.

[–]dannylandulf 0 points1 point ago

Know a lot of food and housing that can be paid with $10?

[–]Naldaen -3 points-2 points ago

So what you're saying is that if you're homeless, only accept a well paying job?

Don't do anything at all to try and rectify the situation, just sit on your ass and wait for someone else to do something?

$10 for pulling weeds and sweeping a drive-way isn't good enough for a homeless person?

disclaimer: i am not a republican. just thought this would bring some interesting conversation

[–]dannylandulf -1 points0 points ago

Yup, as I said. At a very shallow level it's a 'ha-ha them liberals' joke; but if you really look at the broader implications it fits very well into the flawed thinking of conservatives.

"Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work himself?"

Because he's got a mental disorder that wasn't treated properly because of his lack of insurance. After he couldn't pay his medical bills, the bank took his house and now he's a schizophrenic sitting on the curb by the highway instead of a treatment center because the republican party cut the center's funding in order to give more tax breaks to a company that makes tanks.

[–]CaptOblivious 3 points4 points ago

If the man actually wanted to pay someone $50 to do that work, he'd have no problem getting someone to do it.

Sadly in reality, he only wants to pay $0.50 and cant figure out why no one wants to do it.
