Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The cork can only seal out so much air. When you lay it on its side, the wine causes the cork to swell and make a better seal.

I'm not familiar with those. However, if they're made with real cork, then I would say probably.

I've seen a few that you can buy at grocery stores or brookstones that are plastic with a spiral of rubber for the seal, it would be interesting to find out if those apply...

Those things suck. They leak terribly. You are better off getting one with the pump if you don't want to reuse the cork.

the "store wine on its side to keep the cork wet" idea is considered today to be folk wisdom, wisdom that is not accurate. consider that there is 100% humidity in the air inside the bottle, making it unlikely that the cork will do any drying; also, the purpose of the cork is to seal the bottle by being impervious, i.e. it's impervious, it doesn't doesn't dry out, and it needs to be impervious to air so if water is passing in and out of the cork, so is air, but we know that doesn't happen. I have heard some cork experts claim that there is air inside the cork (hence, it's "springy"), and the pressure on the cork being squeezed into the neck of the bottle over a long period of time will cause the cork to slowly out-gas and become less of a stopper (also, directly injecting a small amount of air into the bottle)

and finally, some have pointed out that if you look at old bottles of wine that have been stored on their sides, you see the most deterioration on the inside of the cork, and they surmise that the acidity of the wine is actually hastening the deterioration.

edit: oh, and however well the cork is working, varying the temperature of the storage will cause the pressure in the bottle to rise and fall, so if there is leakage, it will definitely be exaggerated by allowing the temperature to vary. and UV light does damage wine so it should be stored in the dark (though leaded glass does stop a lot of UV just as it does for the windows of a house)
