Can't have been that. The comic implies, with the guy breaking down near the end, that the guy is singing about his past experiences. He clearly hasn't hung himself. The tree is a metaphor for their house.

As a kid who was born very late in my parent's life after a horrible miscarriage, this. They fought through depression and stress, long hours at work, huge debt, an accidental late in life pregnancy (me) and now that they're alone together again, I'm sure they're very happy.
