Spaghetti westerns are absolutely not like that, they are a stark, gritty contrast to the conventional western (which is what is actually depicted).

[–]geraldfjord 16 points17 points ago

It's arguable that Tuco was the protagonist in that movie, not Blondie.

[–]CowboyNinjaD 19 points20 points ago

Tuco definitely had more of a character arc. Blondie and Angel Eyes are pretty much the same people at the end of the film as they were at the beginning.

That said, the beauty of the film is that all three characters are sort of co-protagonists. Even Angel Eyes doesn't fit the traditional role of an antagonist. I mean, think about. They're all going after this treasure that none of them really have any right to. And even the "good" character never says anything about using the money to build an orphanage or anything.

It really is one of the great films (not just westerns) ever made.

[–]Hazy_V 0 points1 point ago

Because of Tuco's poor background? Or based on Blondie's chosen method of income at the start of the film?

[–]ImKindOfBlind 2 points3 points ago

Tuco's character just grew on me.

[–]WeGotOpportunity 1 point2 points ago

Damn, that's a great movie

[–]ABigHairyMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Love that scene

[–]Kirthan 11 points12 points ago

I came to this comment section to post this. They just need to remove the Spaghetti label, and the recipe will become accurate. But that is not all how Spaghetti Westerns work.

[–]ilmrynorlion 8 points9 points ago

You got that right. Dollars Trilogy, anyone?

[–]kindapinkypurple 5 points6 points ago

Glad this is at the top. Westerns often romanticise the cowboy that saves the townsfolk/girl/land, he's the good guy even if he doesn't think it. Spaghetti Westerns are usually more selfish, focusing on money or revenge, less cut and dry with good and bad guy roles, plus a fuckload more violent.

[–]fistilis 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure of this, but I think Spaghetti Westerns normally refer to the three Sergio Leone movies that starred Clint Eastwood (and I guess all the ones that copied him after).

There was Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The last became popular in the US, but For a Few Dollars More has always been my favorite.

Some fun facts, the music from those three movies (I think Ennio Morricone) is so cool that any movie trying to have a cool scene usually steals it (Kill Bill, Kick Ass, several others). Also everyone was speaking different languages (Clint Eastwood English, other people Italian, and I think some Spanish as well) and they just dubbed over after. Amazing acting considering all of that.

[–]underattack86 2 points3 points ago

The term 'Spaghetti Western' refers to western movies made in Italy, not just directed by Sergio Leone or starring Clint Eastwood. This includes Sergio Leone films that didn't involve Eastwood, like 'Once Upon A Time In The West' or 'Duck, You Sucker', and also non-Leone Italian-made westerns like Sergio Corbucci's 'Minnesota Clay'. For my money I think 'Once Upon A Time In The West' is the best of the Leone films. Can't beat that soundtrack, no sir.

Ennio Morricone provided the soundtrack for all three of those movies you mentioned. His most famous track is probably 'The Ecstasy of Gold' from 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', which Metallica use for their introductory music along with a segment from the film. Tarantino used Morricone music for 'Kill Bill vol. 2', and also for 'Inglorious Basterds'. He's a nut for spaghetti westerns.

And to confirm what other people are saying, yes, this image mis-represents the spaghetti western. It depicts a much more traditional western.

[–]FatherVic 2 points3 points ago

Well said, I've never seen a spaghetti western where anyone rides off into the sunset with the girl.

[–]19061 2 points3 points ago

This is what I came here to say. One of the characteristics of spaghetti western is that there rarely is even a romance involved.

[–]pluckydame 1 point2 points ago

I wish I had seen more traditional westerns before I watched High Noon. Looking at the recipe here, it seems like a big part of the film was about turning the usual western on its head. (Guy has girl at the start and is already the town hero, loses girl in order to fulfill responsibilities, finds that his heroic status is ultimately meaningless, etc.)

[–]gooddaysir 34 points35 points ago

I was hoping this would have actual recipes like the spaghetti sauce from The Godfather or making a stew from Arrested Development.

[–]seanmharcailin 11 points12 points ago

I tried the Arrested Development recipe a couple nights ago. it was delicious. And hammy. Mmmm. Hot Ham Water. PM me if you want the recipe.

[–]yangar 1 point2 points ago

What a delightful restaurant! Haha, it certainly is.

[–]speedyjohn 1 point2 points ago

Hot Ham Water =/= Stew. Just ask Carl Weathers.

[–]seanmharcailin -1 points0 points ago

≠ why do people use =/= instead of ≠?

[–]newtoschool 0 points1 point ago

~_O

[–]verekh 1 point2 points ago

The correct way to do it is =!

Which means 'Is not the same as'

[–]dedfrog 0 points1 point ago

It's so watery! And yet there's a smack of ham to it.

[–]BlackZeppelin 1 point2 points ago

I want Ray Liotta screaming at me while high on cocaine about how I'm burning the sauce.

[–]Wuped 0 points1 point ago

To make a dead dove in a paper bag kill a dove then put it into a paper bag.

[–]Garacian00 66 points67 points ago

I like how there's only 1 black guy in the serial killer movie and he dies. upvote for accuracy

[–]muffinsforever 24 points25 points ago

If you look back at classic serial killer films there are actually almost no men who make it through the movie, and outside of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the female lead almost always rescues/kills the killer herself.

[–]aryst0krat 23 points24 points ago

What an interesting place to find a strong feminine lead.

Especially since they're pretty much entirely full of blatant objectification. ಠ_ಠ

[–]muffinsforever 13 points14 points ago

If you're actually interested in the gender politics behind slasher films I'd recommend checking out Carol Clover's Her Body, Himself. Although the piece was written in '87 so it obviously doesn't cover modern slashers which is unfortunate as there's been an interesting shift since the early 2000's back towards traditional gender roles.

And while one can make a case for objectification, I'd challenge you to find any other genre of film that asks males 18-34 to identify with a woman for 90 minutes.

Although it's something that's becoming more and more rare in the genre these days. Basically they've upped the violence and gore factor (and arguably some attitudes on how men are "supposed" to act may have shifted as well) to now make it "okay" for male leads to feel scared in a way that they weren't allowed to before.

[–]Simurgh 3 points4 points ago

The one female character to survive is always the virginal one. If a male survives he also didn't have sex on screen. If you had sex you are obviously a slut and will have your throat cut by the end of the movie.

[–]aryst0krat 6 points7 points ago

Those slut-shaming bastards.

[–]toiletabortion 0 points1 point ago

horror film in general deals pretty deeply with gender politics and the semiotics of sexuality.

muffinsforever mentions carol clovers her body, himself. she also has a more recent (relatively, i think it's 1992) book called men, women and chainsaws that covers these topics

[–]contrarian 0 points1 point ago

The ancient ones must be appeased by following the ritual. Sure, the teenagers all have their option to not go into the cellar. But they all do.

[–]yourhouseisonfire 5 points6 points ago

Also, the chick who survives is the one who is standing by her man, not the one having too much fun on top of the speaker, or the ho showing off her bra removal skills.

[–]Nomen_Heroum 263 points264 points ago

Punch line of the whole thing is: "Some movies are easy to make. Films are a different story." OP enters "Film Recipes" as title anyway. Good going, OP. Still a great post, have an upboat.

[–]Dani212M 55 points56 points ago

Maybe it's a new trend to put the opposite of the punch line in the title?

[–]Nomen_Heroum 33 points34 points ago

It's a step forward from putting the punch line itself in the title, I suppose.

[–]Roopa132 1 point2 points ago

Banana you glad I didn't say orange?

[–]Tranger 13 points14 points ago

That's because he used a repost recipe.

[–]JohnShepps 3 points4 points ago

That end line put me in mind of Billy Walsh from Entourage.

[–]Nomen_Heroum 1 point2 points ago

That's easy. It was the blood.

[–]FAPSLOCK 44 points45 points ago

White cop gets all the credit

[–]Goats_With_Guns 86 points87 points ago

The black cop is too old for that shit.

[–]Farren246 13 points14 points ago

He's lucky he wasn't killed to show how high the stakes are. Must've dived in to a bathtub real fast to avoid the explosion.

[–]farceur318 21 points22 points ago

Thank god he didn't mention how many weeks away from retirement he was. That can be fatal.

[–]ThatJanitor 6 points7 points ago

Only two days 'til reti-

[–]Adolpheappia 5 points6 points ago

TvTropes, Retirony

[–]TheTalkingCamelAnus 1 point2 points ago

For a minute I thought the second part showed the black guy in cuffs.

[–]Misanthroat 15 points16 points ago

Spaghetti Western needs some eye closeup shots...

[–]CollapsingStar 10 points11 points ago

Why is Spider Man in a sports comeback movie?

[–]Papasmurf143 16 points17 points ago

they forgot the dance flick.

downtrodden kid and his gang are good battlers

better battlers have been beating them for a good amount off time

downtrodden kid's gang gets better and enters competition

tie with better battlers

kick their asses in no holds barred final dance off

the end.

[–]DOLTAS 15 points16 points ago

The fuck is a no holds barred final dance off?

[–]Papasmurf143 7 points8 points ago

ever watch stomp the yard? it's pretty bloody.

[–]justifiesactions 1 point2 points ago

im assuming its like a cage match, but I'm not really into dancing

[–]compto35 0 points1 point ago

It's like that Brazilian combative dancing

[–]EaterOfPenguins 1 point2 points ago

Finally a dance film I would watch.

[–]compto35 1 point2 points ago

[–]DerpusOfValues 0 points1 point ago

[–]RedSnt 4 points5 points ago

You fucked the title. It's supposed to say "Movie Recipes".

Everyone knows that in a good spaghetti Western the cowboy rides into the sunset alone. Even though he may have a love interest he can never give up the trail or his gun for a single woman and another town needs saving.

[–]Captain_Aizen 2 points3 points ago

Yay, now do one for Pulp Fiction and Snatch!

[–]skuska 0 points1 point ago

I feel like the guy in the alien movie is Chuck Norris

[–]yangar 2 points3 points ago

I knew Chuck Norris laid eggs.

[–]MlSTERFlSTER69 2 points3 points ago

The egg in the alien invasion one made me completely lose my shit

Transfromers Movie Recipe

That's right motherfucker, it has it's own genre.

[–]Ebake09 1 point2 points ago

I'm still waiting the the god damn second Godzilla.

[–]uniquecannon 0 points1 point ago

The Godzilla cartoon, that was it. Sorry.

[–]Simple_Technique 0 points1 point ago

why isnt Chuck Norris in any of these?

[–]Menolith 0 points1 point ago

If only there was a website that listed these kind of "tropes"...

[–]chickenstwisteddisco 0 points1 point ago

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought the guy in the last one looks like Chuck Norris...

[–]SpinUpAndDown 0 points1 point ago

In the chick flick there's usually another phase when everything seems to be going right, they get in a fight again. Then in the very end they realise it was all a misunderstanding and get together.

[–]_ShyGuy_ 0 points1 point ago

Then Hollywood will remake all of them in, "Stunning 3D"!

[–]SocksOnHands 0 points1 point ago

Obviously, the most important thing to remember when making a movie is to not have anyone wear shoes.

[–]nsport44 0 points1 point ago

shouldn't the end of the serial killer movie have a question mark instead of a period?

[–]anonymousHacker 1 point2 points ago

Repost fuck you hannahjoy33 cunt

[–]mrbaryonyx 1 point2 points ago

Sport movie could also be Dark Knight Rises

[–]Zelltarian 0 points1 point ago

Not Rocky. He was never on top.

[–]cderm 0 points1 point ago

Token black guy in the horror recipe doesn't survive. Nailed it.

[–]Lolz-Muffin 0 points1 point ago

So true

[–]kenba2099 0 points1 point ago

When I saw the sports movie thing, I expected: Crappy team, gains new leader or star player, makes it to championship, can't play game with leader or star player, win anyway. See Major Payne, Mighty Ducks, Space Jam, Angels In The Outfield, Dodgeball, etc.

[–]underattack86 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, the sports movie bit is wrong because it depicts the hero as being on top when the movie starts. I don't watch a lot of sports movies but I'm pretty sure they don't start with the hero on top, they're meant to be under-dog stories, ala Mighty Ducks, Rocky, etc.

[–]Ionlywanttoinsultyou 1 point2 points ago

WTF, why does the chick flick not have a second love interest? There's always two in the chick flick.

[–]underattack86 0 points1 point ago

You gotta have your Colin Firth and your Hugh Grant, so that one can punch the other at the end.

[–]Ionlywanttoinsultyou 0 points1 point ago

There's always two. It's because every girl wants to be pretty enough that she has to choose between 2 guys that are madly in love with her.

[–]Bloody_Conspiracies 1 point2 points ago

Your obvious fact is irrelevant. Who cares how old this is?

[–]SyFyWrestler 0 points1 point ago

So you're telling me that movies have certain shared conventions that place them into genres? Mind. Blown.

[–]Hazy_V -2 points-1 points ago

Lol what happens isn't as important as how it transpires, genius.

[–]Jambdy 0 points1 point ago

Jim Carrey movie: Life unsatisfactory, get special powers/talent, life is awesome with powers, misuses power, apologizes, life goes well, the end

[–]underattack86 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that just Bruce Almighty? Can't think of a second one that follows that pattern.

[–]Jambdy 0 points1 point ago

I would argue that Liar Liar, Fun With Dick and Jain, and Yes Man all follow a similar trend. Sure they're not really powers but they operate as similar plot devices. Ok this whole premise is weak.
