For me, it reminds me of all the cheap church flyers and school function flyers that never had a very professional look to them. I had to steer clear of that font at a young age and it was driven into me by my teacher (I was responsible for layout of the HS news paper) that it wasn't a very 'sleek' font. I guess that stuck with me.

I don't know what everyone else's issue is with it, but that explains mine. I still don't even mind it when it's used in comic strips, but it strikes me as belonging ONLY in comic strips. So who knows! It's all subjective and aesthetics anyway.

Here's the story:

Wave Zero: A name like Comic is bound to draw the attention of someone looking through the list of fonts since it's a known word that is also pretty close to the top of the alphabetical list. More people will try something called "Comic" than any random font.

First wave: Some people from wave zero use Comic Sans in inappropriate contexts like formal essays and stuff like that and it rightfully bothers some people who expect a professional-looking font.

Second wave: other people start noticing after being pointed to it by people from the first wave and spread the disappointment at uses of Comic Sans in formal contexts.

Third wave: it becomes fashionable to despise Comic Sans. It marks you as part of a clique of nerds who notice and stay aware of those things that common people ignore. These people are by hypothesis the kind of people who try to fit in, so they will not only display their "opinion" about Comic Sans, but will also try to one up one another. Now the big problem is: there isn't any objective basis to the attitude toward Comic Sans. It's just a font. It bothered people because it was inappropriate, but that is just a matter of convention: there is nothing wrong with it. So, by default, the only thing those attention-craving nerds can do to one-up one another is extend their hatred: it's not about appropriateness any more, but about hating the font itself. People are not just being too informal, they're being stupid for using it.

Fourth wave: the link between appropriateness and being bothered by Comic Sans is completely lost. People don't even do this this to fit in among nerds anymore, they just mindlessly repeat a meme. It lost all the measure of being a fight and is simply seen as a matter of fact that you repeat like you repeat any fact.

We are currently in that last stage.
