My nose hurt just watching this. Also, can sort of hear the crunch from that nose breaking.

[–]aliofbaba 6 points7 points ago

The funny thing is, male soccer players often get called "pussies" for their acting skills... but if you ever see the women play, they rarely fake injuries!

Edit: put male* before soccer players

[–]DrToner21 0 points1 point ago

And she still played on. Pretty badass if you ask me

[–]chosenone1242 3 points4 points ago

Because in soccer the men are the pussies.

[–]friendlypenguin 0 points1 point ago

Nobody takes MLS soccer seriously in the states, except maybe for Portland Oregon... but my european in-law said that it was the cleanest soccer match she has ever seen. She loved MLS compared to European football.

[–]mynameishutch 42 points43 points ago

She really is a knockout.

[–]WhirlingDervishes 6 points7 points ago

Don't start that pun shit up in here.

[–]theMonocledTopHat 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, it's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

[–]J3553 12 points13 points ago

i'd like her to knee me in the face, if you know what i mean.

[–]heliphael 40 points41 points ago

I'd like to have sex with her, if you know what I mean.

[–]HouseOfHouse 4 points5 points ago

I'd like to put my reproductive organ in her productive organ and move in and out in a shafting motion if you know what I mean.

What's there not to get? You like to get kneed in the face, unless by being kneed in the face you mean that you like to be kneed in the faced, then it's like, whoa! You know what I mean?

[–]Jeremy252 6 points7 points ago

That Alex Morgan is so hot right now.

[–]Deaths_of_Kings -1 points0 points ago

I had the biggest soccer boner for her during the Olympics. Which coincidentally manifested in the same anatomical area my regular boners do.

[–]yanktoast 12 points13 points ago

This video illustrates just how badass women's soccer players are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dULeJpGnKc

[–]ace9213 0 points1 point ago

That little staple device is really neat. Luckily I've never needed to know how handy it is.

[–]Tw9caboose 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, I knew women's soccer players where way tougher than guys and almost never dive but that is just fucking crazy.

[–]AnomalousX12 1 point2 points ago

What a fucking beast! Holy shit. Her face while she's getting the staples. I'm glad I wasn't awake when I got 30 in my leg.

[–]Piraticalstyle 36 points37 points ago

Girls play rough. They don't have to fake injuries.

[–]maomoa 34 points35 points ago

Watching the Olympics this summer with both the men and women's games being played reminded how much better the pace of the women's games are compared to the men's games. There were hardly any dives or stoppages due to acting during the women's games; if someone was on the pitch, the replayed generally showed that it was well deserved. The men's games, however...

[–]Dragday 69 points70 points ago

They need to fix mens hitbox on soccer.

[–]NiteShadeX2 8 points9 points ago

Not likely EA has had that licensing monopoly for years now. They dont have to fix it.

[–]nofelix 15 points16 points ago

The women players know that if any of them dived it's be disastrous for women's football because it'd confirm stereotypes that women aren't suited to the game. They all have had years of proving how tough they are.

[–]ablebodiedmango -1 points0 points ago

What a bitch.

Seriously. Men's soccer is a joke sometimes. I don't get how they don't get shamed out of the sport.

[–]TheMightySpork 8 points9 points ago

It's very unfair when some people categorize all soccer players as divers and cheats. Since there are players that will do everything within the realm of possibility to not fall even after a clear violation. (Not accusing you).

[–]n8wolf 4 points5 points ago

This one is absurd but people often make fun of players that tumble after a minor clip. These guys are sprinting full speed. another player grazing your tho might actually throw your balance off enough to send you flying.

[–]nikipinz 4 points5 points ago

I hate it when people graze my tho.

[–]scamps1 0 points1 point ago

Why didn't you use a gif from the Olympics?

[–]maomoa 0 points1 point ago

'Cause this is one of my favorite dive clips.

[–]n8wolf 1 point2 points ago

A lot of it is about pride and getting rid of stereotypes. Women's soccer is at a much higher level than, say, women's basketball but they still need to prove how hard they play. Dives are cause for much more hate and much less sarcasm in women's soccer.

[–]albequirky 4 points5 points ago

I'm pretty sure this is not true. Girls fake injuries too, and guys play...rough too.

[–]scamps1 0 points1 point ago

Growing up, the players I idolised were rough players.

I was a defender and loved Roy Keane. My tackling reflected that...

[–]prolix -3 points-2 points ago

They need to do something to make up for the lack of speed/quickness male players have.. Just speaking the truth, bring on the hate..

[–]p-nutz 0 points1 point ago

Like what? Take testosterone? Cause that's the only way that's gonna happen.

[–]sophware 0 points1 point ago

Partially true. Of course, using the same logic, women are tougher (more pain tolerance and other tolerance).

Overall, I'd have to give the comment a "good-faith" and "falls-short" rating. No hate.

[–]KookyGuy 10 points11 points ago

Would that be a red card?

[–]MushroomClouds 40 points41 points ago

No because she is not doing it on purpose

[–]Together_We_Rise 3 points4 points ago

Would she get any penalty?

[–]eblees 23 points24 points ago

I don't think so, the match should go on and another goaly should come in

[–]conwyt 11 points12 points ago

If I remember right the fault was actually on the goalie for the poor attempt at a tackle/play on the ball. The US player tried to avoid the slide tackle and that's what resulted in the collision.

[–]WILD_CARD_BITCHES_ 18 points19 points ago

I don't think anyone was at fault. Shit happens in contact sports.

[–]Vainglory 6 points7 points ago

Could be argued that the keeper impeded the striker with her face.

[–]n8wolf 2 points3 points ago

Goalie that has gone through this exact experience twice here.

Why Alex Morgan is at fault: the goalie set her position and did not move her head. Morgan was on a bit of a reckless run.

Why the goalie is actually at fault: she went feet first and didn't attack the ball. Reach that ball with your hands first and your head is nowhere near the other player.

Every time I got hit, it was because I shied away from a play instead of attacking through it.

[–]empty27 0 points1 point ago

It looks like she was outside the penalty box, so she had to attack with her feet.

[–]n8wolf 2 points3 points ago

Completely missed that. Apologies. If that's the case, she's just a full step late on her attack.

[–]KookyGuy 3 points4 points ago

It is obvious that she did try to get out the way, but refs tend to be very protective of a defenseless keeper. I'm just curious what happened afterwards.

[–]specter800 15 points16 points ago

The goalie was unconscious for around a minute and then finished the game. I don't think she should have been allowed to tho as I think she had quite the concussion.

[–]ablebodiedmango 0 points1 point ago

Hardcore.

[–]n8wolf 0 points1 point ago

I got knocked out in a championship game from a full kick to the face and stayed in.

Goalies don't have the same injury requirements as the other players. They are like quarterbacks who are necessary to form and command the defense. It's a huge loss to have your general out at the back.

[–]specter800 2 points3 points ago

I know. But that is dangerous. I've played through my fair share of injuries from broken noses to sprained and partially torn LCLs and MCLs. Those are all painful but not super damaging. Concussions can get pretty serious. Also, potentially slowed reaction times seem like a big negative for a goalie.

[–]n8wolf 0 points1 point ago

Agreed and there's no possible way they'd let her play if she wasn't reacting to the trainers.

[–]specter800 0 points1 point ago

IIRC when they were testing her, she couldn't "follow the finger" on the field. Maybe it was her neck that was keeping her from doing that but I think she loked utterly confused and lost.

[–]leschwe 2 points3 points ago

It is very easy to foul a keeper, but there's a difference between charging a goalie down and having one clumsily come at you outside the box.

[–]KookyGuy 0 points1 point ago

I figured since she went outside the box it was her fault. If she inside the box I think it would be a different story.

[–]berserker87 0 points1 point ago

The goalie actually was more likely to be fouled. I watched this game last month and the announcers made it pretty clear that this was a terrible move on the goal-keeper's part.

Also I want to sex Alex Morgan.

[–]scamps1 0 points1 point ago

Nah, if the ref takes down a player by diving at her feet and not making contact with the ball its a foul.

[–]i_love_cake_day 12 points13 points ago

Truthfully, it should have been a red card on the keeper. Hard to tell from the GIF but Alex Morgan would have had a clean path to the goal had the goalie not tripped her with her face. The goalie didn't touch the ball at all.

[–]1011analseepage 2 points3 points ago

If a ref gave a red card for that I would be astounded...

[–]sophware 0 points1 point ago

I was fully expecting the red card. You can't miss the ball, prevent a score, and then get away with it just because you 1) got hurt or 2) didn't fully mean it.

That said, the ref is a human.

[–]1011analseepage 0 points1 point ago

I understand that, but the way it happened doesn't warrant a red card. If I wasn't so high I would come up with a better explanation for you, maybe tomorrow

[–]sophware 0 points1 point ago

Naw. It's all good. The answer is for me to go get high.

[–]therealduffin 1 point2 points ago

At first what you're saying seemed harsh but then I remembered the one thing that a lot of people overlook, which is that a foul doesn't have to be intentional, so you're right.

[–]twohomie 0 points1 point ago

This was a trifling offense, not even significant enough to be punishable. She was playing the ball and made an effort to avoid it. The keeper made a poor challenge and as a result suffered

[–]sophware 0 points1 point ago

The offense should have been called on the keeper.

[–]adamdidit2u 6 points7 points ago

She'll never be hit that hard in her face ever again.

[–]miss_guided 0 points1 point ago

I want to go so bad, but tickets are kinda expensive. Sighs Maybe in 4 years the women's olympic team (albeit with different players) will come back through socal.

[–]misplacedexergy 0 points1 point ago

Yea, looks like $50 for the cheapest tickets. If it's any consolation, many of the players on the current team are quite young, so hopefully most of them will still be around in 4 years.

This was posted before and many comments claimed she was ok. She left the game for a bit but her nose actually was not broken. The knee hits her sort of in the cheek if you watch closely.

Sorry I can't link anything as I'm on my phone.

[–]notcaptainkirk 1 point2 points ago

[–]ashabanapal 0 points1 point ago

This is why you always hold the arm on the same side as your front leg out in front of your chest with the elbow pointed at the opponent. Locate the ball by looking under your arm. This will decrease your chance of head injury and allow you to concentrate on the ball more with less risk.

[–]triksr4kds -1 points0 points ago

Woah... I hope her knee is ok!

[–]sincitypunk -1 points0 points ago

[–]Kiristo 0 points1 point ago

Did she score? Ball in the open, no more goalie to worry about, why does this gif end so soon?

[–]p-nutz 0 points1 point ago

No she didn't on that play, but she did get at least 1 goal in that game. Alex Morgan has mad skills.

[–]WombatDominator 0 points1 point ago

As a man who has broken his nose, I bet that was a glorious feeling. And of all the bones I've broken, my nose did not hurt at all. A quick trip to the ER to reset it with a wooden stick, a x-ray to make sure it looked neat and I was good to go.

EDIT: worse part of broken noses are the black eyes, if you don't set it quick enough.

[–]o00oo00oo00o -1 points0 points ago

As a goalie in this situation... one of your feet should be going straight for the crotch area and your hands are what should deflect the ball. Of course hindsight is 20/20... but the goalie should make everyone think twice about coming near them.

edit: I guarantee you that the forward could have jumped a bit higher if needed

Well, yeah it's women's soccer, which is much closer to an actual sport than that acting-class the men are taking when they play.

[–]scamps1 1 point2 points ago

This goes against the circlejerk that people have, but football's a rougher sport than they think. Granted, some players dive. But real footballing injuries are more painful that those from rugby (in my experience.)

In rugby, you use controlled strength , usually applied through upperbody contact.

In football, feet are used, so often-times, an entire bodyweight might follow through a tackle, leading to incidents like that one you've got an image of. Ligament damage is rife in football too, as are metatarsal injuries.
