Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

If only you could see different views as if it were 3d

[–]gunadai 24 points25 points ago

You could probably give it a little bit of a depth effect if you inset the screen a foot or so, but then you'd have to have a bigger screen for the same portal size.

[–]10InchErection 7 points8 points ago

I'm sure it could be done with a Kinect and a rotating webcam on each side.

[–]Godolin 11 points12 points ago

Trouble is, what if multiple people are viewing it?

(I know, I feel like an asshole for asking that. Your rotating webcam idea would actually be really cool.)

[–]MibZ 5 points6 points ago

In that case, we wait until holographic displays and cameras are available!

[–]Gilgifax 5 points6 points ago

Or invent the portal system? I vote ALL OF THE ABOVE

[–]PhoneCar 3 points4 points ago

2 webcams, and a glasses-free 3DTV. It won't have perfect perspective, but it would still be awesome.

[–]Finnoes 2 points3 points ago

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol anyone?

Kremlin invasion

[–]MegaScubadude 2 points3 points ago

That thing was damn cool.

[–]Ignisar 1 point2 points ago

wide angle lense and a parabolic screen? :o

[–]Thorse 157 points158 points ago

Of all the shitty portal posts we get in this sub, this one is actually really cool. I love the fact that it's a bluish tinge and actually connects with something far away. Is it an orange tinge on the West coast office when they see you?

[–]Thorse 27 points28 points ago

Do you work with OP? Please say yes, this is the first portal post I've seen here that I've actually not hated, that is original, and is a really cool fucking concept. I want to know more!

[–]Annihilia[S] 42 points43 points ago

Yes, I'm pleased to announce that the portal is orange on the other side.

[–]amcvega 10 points11 points ago

Well that just pulls it all together nicely.

[–]elperroborrachotoo 1 point2 points ago

And we are pleased to hear.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]ibetrollingyou 3 points4 points ago

Congratulations on finding that.

[–]AnteFjjante 34 points35 points ago

The real question is... What happens if you sprint into it head-first?

[–]stgeorge78 62 points63 points ago

A concussion?

[–]hctet 30 points31 points ago

A lawsuit?

[–]precaut1on 67 points68 points ago

No. Lawlsuit.

[–]CommonMan_Mike 46 points47 points ago

1) You break the unit and waste company dollars

2) Further attempts of "fun at the workplace" are discouraged by management. Lawyers also step in and draft new airtight code of conduct so the company will have plenty of recourse in future incidents. There may or may not be a class on the subject.

3) A year or so goes by and some new person suggests a new fun idea in the staff meeting. They are told things like that can't be done anymore. Awkward silence follows and you feel eyes of disdain descend on you.

4) You feel bad and probably start drinking. You don't drink because you feel bad, but because it gives you enough confidence to talk to <insert gender you like your genitalia to interact with>. The human (hopefully positive) interaction you get makes you feel good again for at least a little while.

[–]SHdude 2 points3 points ago

You arrive in platform 9 and 3/4

[–]Fazer2 -2 points-1 points ago

The portal will vaporize ear tubes... inside your head.

[–]Murderapolis 11 points12 points ago

Where do you work? This is awesome!

[–]Annihilia[S] 28 points29 points ago

I work at a tech company that offers web solutions for the auto industry. Nothing remotely gaming related so it surprised the shit out of me.

[–]maddzy 11 points12 points ago

Does the one in the other office have an orange outline?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]maddzy 1 point2 points ago

I already know this, because I asked this question 5 hours ago. He answered it in another comment 1 hour ago.

[–]0011110000110011 1 point2 points ago

Oh, sorry, I didn't read the time on it.

[–]irvinestrangler 0 points1 point ago

What was the answer? Is it orange on the other side?

[–]maddzy 2 points3 points ago

Yes

[–]irvinestrangler 1 point2 points ago

Can you link to the comment in this thread, please?

[–]Aff3ct 8 points9 points ago

Someone had a budget to blow. Nothing like placing a "portal" at the top of the stairs in the hallway. You can scope out the West coasters as they take a dump.

[–]_Raze_ 9 points10 points ago

Do you often drop trou on staircases?

[–]Godolin 3 points4 points ago

... Am I not supposed to?

[–]_Raze_ 1 point2 points ago

No, it's fine. Just making sure we're on the same page.

[–]Viking_Lordbeast 1 point2 points ago

Well if they don't spend the money this year, they won't get it next year.

[–]Memitim 0 points1 point ago

Heh, pretty sure I could hook that up with crap laying around at work (maybe not the blue and orange lighting) in about an hour. Not even close to leaving purchase card territory.

Still badass, though. Wish that I had thought of doing it but I'm not going to be the dude to copy it.

[–]Gillo_ 12 points13 points ago

I'm afraid I'm going to have to steal this idea.

[–]EzioClarke 3 points4 points ago

We get inside in the night, you sleep the guards, il take care of the lights...

[–]gknick 6 points7 points ago

Do you happen to work for Dealer.com? I follow them on facebook and saw a post about this :) The car dealership I work for uses Dealer.com

[–]Annihilia[S] 11 points12 points ago

Hi redditor client! Thanks for your biz.

[–]Iamien 0 points1 point ago

I work for a smaller company that competes with yours(10 person company, 300 rooftops or so). Our domain name sucks though so I doubt we will ever take all your business.

[–]Annihilia[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hey man, that used to be us too. We all start somewhere.

[–]bboy799 5 points6 points ago

Probably, read ops comment.

[–]jiblet84 15 points16 points ago

This is how the future of business employment will work. World wide offices with "Desks" that have a TV such as this one. Just walk up to the desk and change the channel to whoever you need to speak with.

Conference? Join in several channels on one larger projection TV.

[–]mtdewrulz 22 points23 points ago

Already exists. Cisco Telepresence room.

[–]ReptarCat 5 points6 points ago

One older "telepresence" system I use in one of my college classes is terrible though. Trying to pan in on somebody who pressed the microphone on? NOPE IT BROKE TIME TO REBOOT.

[–]vtbrian 3 points4 points ago

That's just regular video conferencing, not telepresence.

[–]MibZ 2 points3 points ago

Hint: It's the same thing, just made to be fancier and more expensive.

[–]ninekeysdown 0 points1 point ago

I can confirm this is some kind of black magic.

[–]Dizmn 0 points1 point ago

Like in Demolition Man, but not as cool.

[–]RynoXD 9 points10 points ago

Cave Johnson here.

Greg tells me that you are the first test subject to set up a portal in two separate vicinities and that the feeling you may be experiencing in your abdomen is the feeling of SCIENCE! or the failure of your internal organs...

But without your testing there would be no Blappature Mesa and if stop testing well... you're fired.

By the way chariots chariots.

[–]Golanthanatos 2 points3 points ago

Have you confirmed it is, in fact, a webcam, and they haven't just lied to you about having a working portal gun?

[–]ashinyfeebas 3 points4 points ago

How... How did you do this?

[–]VTJP 35 points36 points ago

A web cam, internet, and a tv?

[–]ChronnerCage 7 points8 points ago

Nope; magic.

[–]eLverunte 6 points7 points ago

[–]Tim_Kaiser 10 points11 points ago

[–]jozaud 1 point2 points ago

this is fantastic.

[–]ChronnerCage 0 points1 point ago

Perfect

[–]Elshar 5 points6 points ago

  • Take a webcam. Install that in Office A.

  • Get a TV, preferably one with internet capabilities. Put that in office B.

  • Parse webcam output through some FX thing that puts a glowy blue "portal" in the middle.

  • To get "Portal" effect, paint, or cover the TV leaving a "portal" oval in the middle to match what you did in the previous step.

For extra points:

  • Take picture of "portal".

  • Post on Reddit, etc for Karma! (Or upvotes, or Likes, or Diggs, etc).

[–]Komania 1 point2 points ago

I actually thought there were blue lights around the oval

[–]Elshar 0 points1 point ago

That would work too. Would actually be even easier. :)

[–]Golanthanatos 4 points5 points ago

portal gun duh

[–]ChillxPenguin 0 points1 point ago

The Occam's Razor is strong in this one.

[–]dtrainusmc 0 points1 point ago

Myyyy nigga. You finally made the big time.

[–]Annihilia[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm going into retirement.

[–]Invisible_Midget 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome

[–]ceshuer 0 points1 point ago

Do you happen to work at Valve?

[–]shikza 0 points1 point ago

Now that's cool.

[–]toekneeg 0 points1 point ago

very awesome

[–]dimmidice 0 points1 point ago

is there an orange one in the west coast office? really awesome idea

edit: aww shame the webcam is positioned that way, and is that just a flatscreen with paper over it? xD

[–]tfootdale 0 points1 point ago

but does the other office have the orange portal?

[–]allhailxenu 1 point2 points ago

there is nothing not awesome about this

[–]chiju 0 points1 point ago

i want -

[–]kash04 1 point2 points ago

I Think it would be cool if you could somehow integrate this into it!!

http://123kinect.com/winscape-virtual-windows-with-kinect/36196/

[–]OriginallyWhat 0 points1 point ago

woah, that's awesome

[–]tek2222 0 points1 point ago

Arrrrrrrrrrgghhhhhh.... where is the picture of the other side ?

[–]rudman 0 points1 point ago

This is a genius idea for a long distance couple to put in their living rooms.

[–]CountFauxlof 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I work down the street from you.

[–]rjostrand 0 points1 point ago

And to think that I was under the impression that Portal references are totally played out. Well done, sir, I regret that I have but one upvote to give you.

[–]CmegaMighty 1 point2 points ago

Imagine the possibilities if they used Kinect's motion tracking abilities... O.O

[–]ClassySphincter 0 points1 point ago

Now, if you could just move the orange portal and tie a hammock though it...

[–]kentken 0 points1 point ago

now pass coffee through it!

[–]Sirisian 0 points1 point ago

[–]poop_frog 1 point2 points ago

inb4 fire hazard. brb callin' ur marshall

[–]Alpha17x 1 point2 points ago

Why? It's an alarm strobe and it's not blocked.

[–]kylr[!] 0 points1 point ago

Technically the webcam is blocking the strobe*. Also, depending on how far off the wall that thing is mounted, it may not be ADA compliant. Also, I'm curious if that display panel is rated for vertical mounting and if the box it's in is vented properly. Oh the burdens of commercial A/V installation... :[

*depending on your state or local fire codes.

[–]efuentes 0 points1 point ago

We really need a photo of the other end!

[–]poozleton 0 points1 point ago

Is this in the atlassian offices?

[–]kivaknievel 0 points1 point ago

R U the real Nightingales?

[–]dragonkuff 1 point2 points ago

I read the title too fast and thought it said "We just got a Portal to work" :(

[–]kurai_tori 1 point2 points ago

So very cool

[–]tommehnet 0 points1 point ago

[–]cleggett 1 point2 points ago

I love this idea! You can have a hallway chat with a collegue in another building.

[–]incith 0 points1 point ago

Man...I hope I live long enough to see this turn into reality one day.

[–]godlyapple12345 -2 points-1 points ago

This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]Megusta6 -3 points-2 points ago
