FYI: he or she is doing leaving those off purposely in the hopes that you will tip more. - former service industry employee

[–]nilhaus 70 points71 points ago

If this happens I just tip the difference to the wait staff. That way if they do have to pay it themselves, they aren't shorted.

[–]ChiefBromden 35 points36 points ago

Same here. Also, some staff have permission to comp a certain number of drinks too...

Source: I'm a regular at waaayy too many restaurants.

[–]funfungiguy 18 points19 points ago

This happens at my local watering hole. I always feel bad, even though it didn't come out of my waitresses pocket, so I give her a five... basically I paid five dollars for a $3.00 beer that was comped to me.

Fucking Socially Awkward Penguin.

[–]ChiefBromden 17 points18 points ago

Don't feel bad. I'm a very generous tipper by nature, and it always works out in the end. Restaurant is full, and there is a 2 hr wait? Pfft. I've had the Goodfellas treatment of them bringing out an extra table. Tip well at your favorite restaurants, is one of the best pieces of advice my grandfather gave me. It's gotten me jobs, laid. and laid.

[–]midtowngroove 5 points6 points ago

I tip well, but i never get laid. I just eat by myself though...

[–]ChiefBromden 2 points3 points ago

become a regular. take a date there. I most often than not eat at the bar or table by myself. So much better service that way IMO, at least, at fine dining restaurants.

[–]pcoon43456 1 point2 points ago

They think you are a writer/critic. Solo diners almost always get better service. Former waiter chiming in.

[–]funfungiguy 4 points5 points ago

I think when you tip well enough to get laid, usually that's not considered a tip anymore. In fact, I'm not even sure you're doing a business transaction with a waitress anymore.

[–]ChiefBromden 5 points6 points ago

No, not laid from the waitstaff, I mean tipping well at a local restaurant enough that when it's crowded and I bring a date, I always get a table, or get taken care of, or the bartender knows I'm trying to get laid, and gives the "this guy is awesome" special treatment. Alas, I'm married now and those days are over, but it still gets me laid with my wife....which, I guess is something.

[–]funfungiguy 3 points4 points ago

Ahh... that explains it. If I tipped that well to impress my wife at dinner, she'd just ask me where I got all the good tipping money and if I've been holding out on her every payday when she steals my check like a bandit. she'd just bring the shakedown a litter harder every two weeks.

[–]ChiefBromden 2 points3 points ago

I don't tip well to impress my wife (she actually gets a little annoyed at it) I tip well, because I appreciate good service. And, I tip well all the time, so that when that ONE time comes, when the place is full and I'm hungry, I get a table no problem. Or, the chef will cook for me off menu, or I'll have a bottle of wine or a few extra dishes to try sent to the table...

[–]iconicrooster -1 points0 points ago

so wait. if you didn't tip well, your wife wouldn't lay you?

[–]ChiefBromden 1 point2 points ago

I don't tip well to impress my wife (she actually gets a little annoyed at it) I tip well, because I appreciate good service. And, I tip well all the time, so that when that ONE time comes, when the place is full and I'm hungry, I get a table no problem. Or, the chef will cook for me off menu, or I'll have a bottle of wine or a few extra dishes to try sent to the table...

An example being a few weeks ago my boss was in town. We finished up with work late (around 9) and every place we went by was packed. He was getting frustrated. I said "follow me, I we'll go to my restaurant" it was also crowded, but I was greeted at the door by name and shuffled to a suddenly open table, with dishes from the chef there in a few minutes for us to try. Why? because everytime i'm there I'll tip 30+% sometimes more. When bonus time comes around and I get a 10k bonus, it's s drop in the bucket.

[–]iconicrooster 0 points1 point ago

so you're saying tipping well doesn't necessarily get you laid by your wife? or is it just kind of a non-factor?

[–]d2keen 0 points1 point ago

The best something

[–]cstonerun 0 points1 point ago

that's good policy

[–]technographie 0 points1 point ago

I would always ask indicate and ask them to include the missing drink, but now that you mention it, I think this is a much better idea, and so I'm going to start doing this.

[–]gaviidae 0 points1 point ago

Why not just fix the problem by telling your waiter?

[–]xployt 0 points1 point ago

Glad to hear someone knows that "free" isn't free. If I forget to ring in your drinks, chances are I just bought them with whatever generous amount you left behind.

Granted, sometimes we're just being nice to nice people.

[–]jettrink 2 points3 points ago

If they dont appear on the tab the waiter didn't put them into the system. Therefore he isn't having to pay for anything, he's either just forgetting to put them in because he's busy or he's trying to get a better tip.

[–]BallsackTBaghard -3 points-2 points ago

No, you don't do that. Liar.

[–]selflessGene 4 points5 points ago

I don't give a fuck one way or another, but does this mean you're stealing from the owner of the place?

[–]cstonerun 3 points4 points ago

nah. in order to win repeat customers, most bartenders and often servers as well will be given a "comp tab" they can use to write off drinks. Bar owners know it's good policy to give away a free drink every now and then, and bartenders love to use their comp tab on the regulars they know are good tippers.

[–]TheNoveltyAccountant 1 point2 points ago

That's how i reason it as well. If something isn't on the bill i always let the waiter/waitress know and pay for it because it's the right thing to do.

[–]theRainChicken 0 points1 point ago

Really?i just let it go because, hey, a couple of free drinks!

[–]TheNoveltyAccountant 1 point2 points ago

A number of times they give it to you for free because you were honest anyway.

I entered into a contract, and should fulfill my part of that contract. I wonder what the law is around that?

[–]theRainChicken 0 points1 point ago

Law? I don't care. Free drinks and I'm the fuck out.

[–]NOTcreative- 3 points4 points ago

my best friend works at pf changs and he doesn't charge drinks when he likes the people. Message: be nice to you servers you might get free soda.

[–]Travlamb 0 points1 point ago

You speak the truth. I do it all the time.

[–]cargocultleader 2 points3 points ago

You are fired. - current industry manager.

[–]sebastian_____ 8 points9 points ago

Service industry employee here and yes we do it on purpose, if we like you and know you're going to tip us we will take off your drinks. But then again if you're an asshole we are pretty much going to charge you for every little thing. Like loaded mashed? I can make that for free, and If your pretty cool I usually will. I'm telling you, don't be an asshole at a restaurant folks. We will fuck with your food and the costs and we will laugh at you for being such an asshole.

[–]RdotHarper 5 points6 points ago

You're an ass.

[–]KnightKrawler 0 points1 point ago

So are customers.

[–]dsoltesz 0 points1 point ago

You leave off items without informing the customer? I don't think so.

[–]sebastian_____ 1 point2 points ago

of course I let them know.

[–]dsoltesz 2 points3 points ago

Then that's different and that's okay. You didn't forget like OP's talking about. What OP's talking about imho is taking advantage of the server and stealing from the business.

[–]sebastian_____ 0 points1 point ago

Servers are pretty good at their job, if they sincerely forgot then good job on most for pointing it out. but usually we don't and we are doing it for a tip.

[–]facetothedawn 0 points1 point ago

[–]TODO_TOTO -1 points0 points ago

I do this, but sometimes people tip me a dollar under 20% and I can only guess it's because they thought I forgot to ring them up and therefore am a forgetful waiter. Not the case. I am a badass waiter.

[–]dsoltesz 1 point2 points ago

Usually, the server tells us when they do that. If they don't, I point out the missing items. If they choose to leave them off the bill after that, they get tipped on what the actual bill would have been with all items included.

[–]Tashre 0 points1 point ago

Risking having to pay the difference seems a silly game to play with your paycheck.

[–]itsjusteyesman 1 point2 points ago

I hate how there's a job that requires tedious shit like this for the workers to make ends meet instead of the place paying the workers what they deserve, and that it's only in America.

It also sucks that the tipping culture spilled over to Canada, where waitresses aren't deducted pay and are actually paid minimum or more, yet they still expect tips

[–]al0newestand 0 points1 point ago

I tip twice as much if I get even one drink off, so it works for me.

[–]Saskuel[!] 0 points1 point ago

[–]hakzorz 115 points116 points ago

I was at taco bell a while back and my total was 9 something so I handed the guy a 10. The guy handed back the food and the change. As I went to drive off I noticed he gave me change for a 20. I knocked on the window and the guy working there rudely held up his hand as if he could not be bothered by me. I knocked again, same reaction so I just drove off. Im all for being honest but that guy earned his drawer being short that night.

[–]yabacam 60 points61 points ago

must be taco bell policy. I ordered some food that was 6 bucks. Before I even paid he hands me 14 bucks in change. I tell him I haven't even paid yet, try to hand him the change PLUS 6 bucks (for my order) but he laughed at me. so I said no really... he laughed again and went on with his business..... I drove off after that, I can only do so much.

[–]eyecite 85 points86 points ago

You know what's probably Taco Bell policy? Going to work stoned as fuck. That's what happened to you guys.

[–]REDDIT_HARD_MODE 7 points8 points ago

One of my managers regularly came to work stoned. She was awesome.

[–]TheMarshma 21 points22 points ago

it was his last day. whether he was doin it on purpose or not, it was probably his last day..

[–]mr-peabody 28 points29 points ago

He didn't even know it yet.

[–]TheNr24 0 points1 point ago

Two summers ago I worked in a snackbar in an entertainment park and when we counted the money in the drawer we often came a little short and when never got into trouble because of it. This one time though had quite a bit too much, no one understood. Our manager got real angry, which most of us really hadn't expected, but I guess it makes sense. In the first scenario, there's no chance a customers would come back and complain, in the second we must have basically ripped some people off, potentially resulting in dissatisfied customers. (I still think it was a computer error :p)

[–]Cheese_Bits 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like a good boss.

[–]Zombie_Feeder 5 points6 points ago

So you got paid $14 to eat taco bell? Sign me up!

[–]yabacam 0 points1 point ago

exactly. I don't feel so bad since I did try to give it back and I'm sure the profits over the years of me eating there is > than $14. I saw the guy still work there after this happened until I got a new job with a different work shift. Far as I know he never was fired for it. win/win I guess haha

[–]ienjoymen 2 points3 points ago

As an employee at T Bell, I'm a appalled by that. Unlike many other places, I actually try to keep my customers happy. In light of the gif, I actually sometimes don't charge for drinks. If I do, I usually charge them for a small and give them whatever size they need. I feel like I'm cheating the people out of their money, cause the largest drink we have here is 2 bucks.

[–]GangsterObama -1 points0 points ago

DO AN AMA

[–]ienjoymen 1 point2 points ago

I actually already have, but T Bell was threatening me, cause I was giving away secrets :P

[–]Warlizard 59 points60 points ago

This happened to me the other night.

I was closing out the tab at a bar and noticed that my double vodka shot wasn't on there.

I called over the bartender and told him, he looked confused, then said, "Wait, you're telling me that I didn't charge you for something and you want to pay for it?"

Yep.

"That's the first time that's happened to me in all the years I've been bartending. Thanks man."

I know the temptation is to let it go, to save the 20 bucks, but it's a simple question of whether or not you're honest. Would you want someone to pick up a twenty-dollar-bill that YOU dropped and hand it back to you?

If you left your new phone on the subway, wouldn't you want someone to track you down and give it back?

That's how I look at it. The bartender "dropped" twenty and I was just picking it up and giving it back.

[–]Kon-chezz 40 points41 points ago

Holly shit, a shot of vodkas $20?! Glad i drink at home.

[–]Warlizard 23 points24 points ago

Double shot of Grey Goose. It was a dumb Hollywood bar so everything was overpriced.

Better than Vegas though. Same drink, $40.

At the VFW, I paid 12 bucks for 2 beers, a massively over-filled glass of Grey Goose, a rum/coke, and a shot of whiskey.

Gotta love the V.

[–]Sykos 8 points9 points ago

VFW?

[–]Warlizard 19 points20 points ago

Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Basically, it's a club for people who are, well, vets of wars. Like the American Legion.

[–]Sykos 6 points7 points ago

Thanks, friend!

[–]Warlizard 5 points6 points ago

Np.

[–]TheNr24 11 points12 points ago

Are you Warlizard from the VFW forum?

[–]Warlizard 2 points3 points ago

I guess.

[–]gijane480 0 points1 point ago

you know I just checked an /r/vfw exists but noone one is there

[–]TheNr24 0 points1 point ago

crazy shit

I checked the posting history for the creator of that sub and it's mostly gaming. A abbreviations for some game maybe?

[–]snouzer 3 points4 points ago

You're in VFW? If you like drinking, you should join the Elks.. many of our alcohol brothers in our lodge (I'm a Freemason) are Elks and Turtles.. and all they do is drink.. what part of LA are you from?

[–]Warlizard 1 point2 points ago

I'm also an Elk. Well, I joined about 15 years ago, although I haven't been in many years. I'm not from L.A., I just go out there pretty frequently.

[–]gaviidae 1 point2 points ago

Vets of Foreign wars. They don't let those who fought in the War of 1812 enjoy cheap drinks.

[–]shibblywibbly 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't want vampires in my bar either. It never ends well.

[–]bricks_were_shat 3 points4 points ago

Dude, like, I love your gaming forum.

[–]Warlizard 10 points11 points ago

Thanks. I get that a lot.

[–]selflessGene 1 point2 points ago

I should write you a script to automatically respond to these.

[–]Warlizard 0 points1 point ago

Thanks but that would make me switch from opera and I'm addicted to it.

[–]mdchap01 0 points1 point ago

... A bottle is $30

[–]Lambchops_Legion 9 points10 points ago

I wouldn't mention it, but I would have made up the difference in the tip.

[–]JoeBobson 9 points10 points ago

A thousand times this. Sometimes it's deliberate, a bartender is trying to cultivate regulars or just keep the stools full... sometimes it is just accidental. Tipping 50% the valie of comped drinks plus normal tip is the proper way to handle a drink that wasn't rang up. Why?

  • Informing someone they fucked up and insisting you pay for it makes them lose a little face, in front of other patrons and staff. You're pointing out the guy literally can't keep tabs on his establishment.

  • If it was comped intentionally, you look like you can't accept it graciously and discreetly.

*The tip goes to the server/bartender. The establishment cleared profit on everything you'll drink for the night on your first drink. Tippinthis way lets them know you're quite happy - too happy to not have an explanation.

[–]Lambchops_Legion 1 point2 points ago

Plus, I know he'll serve me first every time i come in after that.

[–]Armed_To_The_Teets[S] 2 points3 points ago

that's what I do. I'm usually a good tipper but if I see drinks missing I'll throw a bigger tip in there.

[–]Strawcrazyman 2 points3 points ago

I've done the same thing at my regular bar a few times. The bartenders know me now and my drinks are always filled to the brim.

[–]Iron_Maiden_666 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I always pay up.

A few months ago I was eating pastries. The guy missed 2, I was trying to explain to him that he billed me less. Finally he understood, paid the difference and came out.

[–]Shagoosty 2 points3 points ago

I pointed out that my bartender mischarged me once, the next drink was on the house. Came out to about the same.

[–]dmtry 2 points3 points ago

If I'm at the bar, and the bartender forgets to put my drink on the tab, I just give it back as a tip.

[–]Warlizard 13 points14 points ago

Why? That just encourages him to "forget" to bill you for more.

He didn't purchase the liquor, he didn't sign the lease, he doesn't employ the other bartenders.

When he leaves off a drink, it's the owner who suffers, not the bartender.

[–]dmtry -1 points0 points ago

I feel like a terrible conservative now :(

[–]Warlizard 5 points6 points ago

Lol. As soon as you own your own business, you start to see things differently.

Look, I know my books are torrented. I've had people link the torrent to me.

The worst part is when I give it away for free and the next day a google alert for the book shows up. That tells me that someone I gave my book to uploaded it to a torrent.

Now, if they'd asked me, "Heya War, there are people all over the world who can't buy through Amazon, you mind if I throw it up on the Pirate Bay or something?" I would have said, "Fuck yeah, throw it up. The more people who enjoy it the better."

But they don't ask me and I think it's fucking rude.

/rant

[–]dlpwillywonka 1 point2 points ago

Heya War, there are people around the world unable to buy your book through Amazon so do you mind if I republish your book in those countries and get all the profits? ;)

[–]CowboySpencer 1 point2 points ago

I do it because it used to be that servers would have to pay that out of their own pocket.

[–]Warlizard 0 points1 point ago

Right. There is some new technology that actually counts the number of shots poured and charges accordingly. I think one of the greatest problems in the industry is missing booze...

[–]CowboySpencer 1 point2 points ago

Hey, I'm just sayin' - I had a friend who was a table server who said the bar tracked their drinks carefully and if they forgot to put one on the ticket it came out of her paycheck. shrug

[–]Warlizard 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I've heard the same thing. I don't know that I agree with it, but I understand it.

Sort of like paying for a plate you drop. When I was a dishwasher, anything I broke came out of my meager check.

[–]BetweenJobs[!] 0 points1 point ago

Consider this alternative perspective:

It is the restaurant/bar's responsibility to keep track of my orders and bill me. If they fail in this responsibility, I am under no moral obligation to take on this responsibility for them. My moral responsibility to pay the amount billed. So there is nothing dishonest about letting missed items slide.

Now, it might be cool of me to take on their responsibility for them in a such a situation, but there is no reason why I ought to take on their responsibility.

[–]Bongpig 2 points3 points ago

Your moral obligation is to pay for what you got.

Your legal obligation is to pay the amount billed.

We are all human and we all make mistake. You should look out for your fellow humans and point out any mistakes you notice

[–]antodan323 0 points1 point ago

There's a mistake in your mistake.

[–]Bongpig 0 points1 point ago

You found it for me. Thanks.

[–]Warlizard 1 point2 points ago

By the same token, I have no personal responsibility to help out an old lady who's car has broken down in the rain, but I choose to because I think it makes for a better society.

I'd disagree that you aren't under any moral obligation though. You bought something and through an error, weren't charged for it. Because you used a good or service that, prior to using, you agreed to pay for, you owe the money.

[–]Bongpig 0 points1 point ago

I'm the same. I know what I got and I intend to pay for it, even if the person at the till has fucked up.

This trait wasn't passed onto my brother though. Last week he took the family out for some sushi. The waitress messed up and charged $40 less then she should have. He didn't say anything, but I did. He thinks I'm a cunt for costing him $40. He wont accept he had already spent that $40

[–]Warlizard 2 points3 points ago

I think it stems from the idea that the nameless, faceless corporation is screwing you over so anything you can get from them is awesome.

[–]fahque650 0 points1 point ago

What a douchebag brother.

I'm talking about you.

[–]surfacetoair81 -1 points0 points ago

Wow, you must've been that guy who tattletales on others all the time at school.

[–]Warlizard 3 points4 points ago

Nope. Just a former business owner who appreciates honest customers.

[–]surfacetoair81 1 point2 points ago

Really..So let's assume you are at a blackjack table and the dealer pays out the whole table on a hand he/she should've won. As a principled man that you are Do you point out the errant mistake, thus, affecting everyone else's fortunate break at the table, or do you-- along with everyone else-- not say a word and be glad you got some extra chips to play with?

[–]Warlizard 0 points1 point ago

By your logic, if a person drops a deposit envelope and 10 people take some o the money inside, it would be stupid to alert the person to his mistake. Moral relativism is a dangerous road, my friend. Either the money is yours or it isn't.

[–]Siggy778 11 points12 points ago

Love Ryan Theriot. Best nickname in sports ("The Riot")

[–]wombats88 26 points27 points ago

Upvote for Ryan Theriot, former Cub!

[–]Malcorin 3 points4 points ago

I find it hilarious and sad that he left the Cubs, only to come to STL and win a ring.

[–]wombats88 0 points1 point ago

hahaha right, he took the easy way out. I'm glad he got a ring though, wish he had gotten it with the Cubs. But, our time will come soon enough!

[–]siberianunderlord 2 points3 points ago

Theriot was traded from the Cubs to the Dodgers then the Dodgers to the Cardinals, so he really just got quite lucky. :P

[–]piece_of_mind 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, I came to find out the name of this guy! :)

[–]wombats88 0 points1 point ago

You're welcome!

[–]danlboone 1 point2 points ago

Geaux Tigers

[–]jubilee__ 0 points1 point ago

I miss him at Wrigley.

[–]jubilee__ 0 points1 point ago

I read that. Can't say I'm surprised. I'm not sure of many people who have been happy with Cubs management.

[–]evrydysteez 1 point2 points ago

That has nothing to do with it. I'm sure a lot of players feel that way, but they keep it to themselves. When a team gives you a shot to play in the major leagues, you talk up how much you enjoyed being a Cub and how much you'll miss the team, and then you publicly throw them under the bus the first chance you get, that makes you an asshole.

[–]wombats88 -2 points-1 points ago

heh, I was just kidding before...I never liked him anyways..heh heh. What a Douche though.

[–]siberianunderlord -2 points-1 points ago

Not even this comment would make Cardinals fans like him.

[–]deadfermata 12 points13 points ago

Upvote for Giants and the 2-0 against Cardinals.

x-post this to /r/sfgiants and they will love you.

[–]JesusIsAScapegoat 0 points1 point ago

x-post to /r/Dodgers and watch what happens.. or if it was Bonds, /r/pirates cries I want just ONE winning season....

[–]ShakeNBakey 0 points1 point ago

Theriot played for the Dodgers so nobody would really care

[–]munklunk 18 points19 points ago

We didn't forget. Tip us accordingly.

[–]wehopeuchoke 10 points11 points ago

That's actually really shitty. You're stealing from a restaurant/your work to get more money from tips.

[–]munklunk 4 points5 points ago

Most bars have a "comp tab" where a certain number of drinks throughout the night are comped. These can be used to pacify a pissed off table, if it's someone's birthday or many other reasons.

Free drinks are desserts are easy as to win loyal customers, reward regulars, and build your own personal following of patron that come in specifically for you. So, in the long run, a well timed free drink here and there makes the bar/restaurant more money in the long run.

[–]RdotHarper 0 points1 point ago

Full disclosure: I own two restaurants. Use the comp tab then, don't just leave it off the bill dummy. Restaurant owners can write these off as promotions. I buy plenty of drinks for regular customers, read "I BUY". Everything done without my knowledge is stealing. Sure some servers get discretion but they use the fucking comp button. The other advantage is we can justify our liquor cost if we know what is happening to the inventory.

TLDR: Munklunk is a thief, restaurant owners want to comp drinks.

[–]munklunk -1 points0 points ago

*thief

[–]wehopeuchoke 1 point2 points ago

Ah, I see. And what exactly would be tipping accordingly? Tip as if the drink was on the bill and go to the 15-20%?

[–]munklunk -1 points0 points ago

Honestly, anything above 20% and the server will remember you as awesome. Having servers/bartenders knowing you as a heavy tipper will give you lots of extras (occasional free shots, drinks, desserts, and almost always expedited service).

[–]corewar 2 points3 points ago

yeah, it's pretty fucked up. That can end up costing the bar quite a bit of money.

[–]theRainChicken 0 points1 point ago

Yet another reason why our current system is insane.

[–]RdotHarper 0 points1 point ago

You're stealing. You know that right?

[–]Reboh79 -1 points0 points ago

no

[–]REDDIT_HARD_MODE -1 points0 points ago

I'm SAP so I'd be nervous.. half the cost back as tip good?

[–]mcredson 0 points1 point ago

I normally add at least half of the free drinks in addition to what I was already going to tip.

[–]REDDIT_HARD_MODE -1 points0 points ago

Ah, yes. This is what I was trying to say.

[–]The_Croquet_Player 4 points5 points ago

...and go Giants!

Just had this happen to me at a Chipotle. I ordered a burrito with guac, and they never charged me for the guac.

This is a dodger fan's reaction from the beginning of the season to today

[–]dropperofpipebombs 3 points4 points ago

The Riot!

[–]Redcard911 3 points4 points ago

And then you add the price of that drink to the tip.

[–]seekgeo 0 points1 point ago

Around last year, I went grocery shopping and then once I was done buying food. I went back to car and put food away, read the receipt to make sure I get money saved for using Albertsons card.

I realized that the cashier did not charge me for a pound and half of ground beef for some odd reason. So, I took it out and headed back to the store, found the cashier. She was dumbfounded. I paid what was owed then left.

Some people thought I was crazy for not having an opportunity to save 6 dollars and some cents...

[–]surfacetoair81 -4 points-3 points ago

Not crazy, just dumb.

[–]neat_love 2 points3 points ago

I spy with my little eye.. A lady boner! Aw yeah

[–]Nebulati 2 points3 points ago

I don't know about you guys, but I typically ask about it--I feel bad when I find out I inadvertently steal something.

[–]deathinthewilderness 0 points1 point ago

As a former server/bartender of five years, I can promise you they don't forget. Usually they're just hooking you up for some reason. Either you're attractive to them, you've been a great, easy going table, or you treated them with an unusual amount of respect.

Edit: If that DOES happen, please tip 20% based on what the bill would've** been had the drinks remained on the bill.

[–]Foley1 -1 points0 points ago

As a waiter in a nice hotel, I do this like 5 times a shift.

[–]gaviidae 0 points1 point ago

With permission?

[–]digitall565 1 point2 points ago

My celebration isn't restaurant specific, but when I went to Disney this summer, they only charged me for half of my hotel stay. They knew it was my anniversary and my girlfriend's first time, so I think that played a part. They charged me half the total as a deposit, and when I checked out, waited a few days and the other half never showed up.

[–]Moiraine 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you should've asked about it?

[–]digitall565 2 points3 points ago

Do you mean I should've pointed it out and asked why they didn't charge me?

[–]shadalator 4 points5 points ago

Also remind the teacher about the homework assignment due today

[–]Moiraine 0 points1 point ago

That's what I was wondering, yep. If you did do that, carry on. :)

[–]itrainmonkeys 0 points1 point ago

They didn't "forget". They hooked you up and are hoping for a good tip.

[–]elodin 0 points1 point ago

your waiter probably didn't forget, they were most likely leaving them off in the hopes of receiving a bigger tip

[–]LordOfGummies 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one around here who corrects the waiter?

[–]dsoltesz 0 points1 point ago

No. If they left something off without telling me, I let them know because I'm fucking honest. I make more than they do and I sure as hell don't want to cost some poor college kid waiting tables a single penny of his wages and tips. If they're gonna get held responsible for an oversight, I'd rather they catch it now than catch hell later. If they choose to leave it off, then I tip accordingly.

[–]Spongemage 0 points1 point ago

I'm a cashier at a deli, I do this all the time for people if they're nice.

[–]Shelllbeee 0 points1 point ago

Jason's deli? ಠ_ಠ

[–]zodam 0 points1 point ago

Waiter here. We just do that if you are a cool/respectable table and we are confident you will leave a decent tip.

Also I sometimes do it to tables of high school kids because I know they probably don't have enough money to pay the bill + a decent tip. So without drinks, they may be able to either leave me a little better of a tip than they would otherwise OR if they do short me, I get shorted on a less expensive check.

[–]ydonchablome 0 points1 point ago

I was allowed to comp drinks to regulars.

[–]sigbox -1 points0 points ago

This is illegal in Ontario. Source: AGCO

• A 12 oz. beer, 5 oz. glass of wine, or a drink containing 1 oz. of spirits is not sold for less than $2, including taxes

[–]ydonchablome 0 points1 point ago

Good thing I wasn't there?

[–]sigbox 0 points1 point ago

Just an interesting fact

[–]ydonchablome 0 points1 point ago

Well, I will keep that in mind. Thanks haha

[–]Alien1993 1 point2 points ago

One time a waiter gave me 10 euros after I gave her 5. I offered Limoncello to everyone on the table. I spent 20 euros that night, good times.

We don't give tips in Europe, get over it.

[–]markmacwastaken 0 points1 point ago

what's the context for the gif?

[–]OhZone 0 points1 point ago

This happened to me last week. She knew I was a former server and I had to explain to my wife why I tipped so large (40%). I was like awwww yeaaah ::wink/nod::.

[–]HtotheG 0 points1 point ago

I always feel guilty and tell them....=/ FAIL

[–]josephdean21 0 points1 point ago

For some reason the flash of the score at the end makes it even better.

[–]Shelllbeee 0 points1 point ago

The last place I worked started "ranking" us by our sales. My were always the lowest 'cause I did this. Paid off more for me than the business I spose.

[–]Its_free_and_fun 0 points1 point ago

THE RIOT! Miss you Ryan.

Sincerely, Cubs fan.

[–]Radico87 -5 points-4 points ago

I went to a mixology bar by my university with a girlfriend once and had a nervous new waiter serve us so drinks took a little bit long to come out. Anyway, cocktails were fantastic, food was excellent, and the bill was in the low $20s. It should have been $140ish. No one caught on and it was glorious.

[–]gaviidae 0 points1 point ago

Are you aware that's stealing? You don't legally get free drinks because they mess up your bill.

[–]theRainChicken -1 points0 points ago

It's not stealing if he pays the bill that he is presented.

[–]deathinthewilderness 0 points1 point ago

Not theft at all. And with drink prices reaching $20 a glass, I say pay the bill that's been presented to you, tip 20%, and be happy that Neil deGrasse Tyson smiled upon you that night.

[–]NeeedWater 1 point2 points ago

But you're not the one messing it up, right? Even if it's "illegal" he still can't get in trouble... right??

[–]gaviidae 0 points1 point ago

No, you can get in trouble. A few dollars is one thing but if the bill is off $120 then it's very clear that he knew he was stealing.

[–]dlpwillywonka -1 points0 points ago

I don't think that's true. It's definitely skeazy behaviour but how are you supposed to know whether you were discounted drinks or something? It's very grey legally.

As a server at a sit-down restaurant, when tables are nice to me and fun to take care of, I routinely leave the charges for their sodas or tea off their bill and rarely tell them I did so. Its something I have control of, and its a way of saying thank you for being pleasant..dont tell my boss.
