We're "Avatards"? Man....

[–]epicaz 33 points34 points ago

We've been called Avatards since the beginning of the fandom really..

[–]Zutara. Even if it is a bit late.SonicIceFlare 15 points16 points ago

I think someone insulted our fandom and we took it the wrong way.

[–]deathbytray 43 points44 points ago

We're not. Note that he refers to a "movie". Clearly, he's referring to James Cameron's Avatar, since we know that there is no other movie named Avatar ever made. So, "Avatard" must clearly refer to fans of that movie.

[–]romistrub 16 points17 points ago

Yes, given the head stylings and shirt, the comic is clearly referring to James Cameron's Avatar. :P

[–]amoliski 10 points11 points ago

They ran out of blue paint half way through painting the hat. The shirt is some of the alien's words.

[–]The Grand PuppeteerNoatak 2 points3 points ago

we have been called avatards prior to that lame excuse for a movie.

[–]Yeah, boomerang!mick4state 7 points8 points ago

Were avatards what?

[–]Blood Benderskafool 5 points6 points ago

Out of the nerdy friends in the link , avatar fans are called "Avatards"

[–]pyrosoad -5 points-4 points ago

The explanation for this is because we have been "Avatar'd", not Ava-tard. It is meant as a verb, but it is also used as our "name".

[–]warlockami 19 points20 points ago

That makes no sense. It's incredibly common for youth these days to call something a _____tard. Obviously originating from retard.

[–]Lymah 3 points4 points ago

i would think it originated from /b/tard

[–]TheShuckler 9 points10 points ago

Which was, in turn, a pun on retard.

[–]Lymah -2 points-1 points ago

well, yes, but more prevalent, i tag the retard to cod/halo xbl wunderchat

[–]gigrut 0 points1 point ago

Retard was a word before "tard"

[–]pyrosoad -3 points-2 points ago

That is not how it was explained to me, I was told exactly what I stated. I also don't hear youth saying "-tard" as a good thing so are you saying we took up that name even though it is insulting us? It makes more sense for us to use something not using a name that is saying we are retarded.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]pyrosoad 0 points1 point ago

Well, I am glad you are getting upvoted, I don't mind losing a few karma. I am still in the positive so it is all good.

[–]thatoneguy211 1 point2 points ago

are you saying we took up that name even though it is insulting us?

Yes. That's exactly what it is. 4chan adds "tard" to the end of tons of things to jokingly mock them. Here's the knowyourmeme for Narutards. Then of course there's /b/tard. It's actually kind of sweet you had such an innocent view of the origin of the word.

[–]pyrosoad 0 points1 point ago

Like I said before, that was the info I had received when I first saw "avatard". I asked what that meant and someone told me that, it is not like I pulled that out of my ass.

[–]CureYourYaksEyes 0 points1 point ago

Well, 4Chan calls everyone -fag. Newfag, oldfag, summerfag, OP is a fag, you get the picture.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]thatoneguy211 2 points3 points ago

You're post doesn't make sense to me. "/b/rony" is still "bro-ny", just stylized to include "/b/". The same with "/b/tard", a combination of "/b/" and "retard". It's a generic 4chan naming convention to include a topical prefix/suffix (Avatar/pony) along with a descriptive noun (bro/retard). Think of it instead of "/b/ retards" it's "Avatar retards". Naruto fans are also referred to as Narutards.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]RainbowCrash 3 points4 points ago

Brony is brony because of /b/

This isn't quite accurate. The term existed before it ever moved to /b/. It's bro + pony. It was adopted quickly by /b/ to be /b/rony, but that isn't how the term originated.

[–]Blood Benderskafool 6 points7 points ago

just sounds like were either retards or turds....

[–]CleverCactus 1 point2 points ago

Apparently nobody realized this comment was making fun of the fact that skafool said "were" instead of "we're"

[–]JProllz 45 points46 points ago

Denial of laogai.

"They could have just flown on the eagles!"

Nothing frustrates myself as a Lord of the Rings fan more.

[–]Aang and Toph have a....rocky relationship.obrienb2 9 points10 points ago

my friends always give me so much shit for this one. i don't even try to explain it anymore.

[–]orannis62 9 points10 points ago

I'm actually curious about that, would you mind explaining for me? :D

[–]Tuko is best shipMolomar 14 points15 points ago

I had it explained to me once. Basicly, there were a lot of archers, dragons, and other things, that if they tried to fly in on the eagles they would be taken out of the sky VERY fast. The only reason the eagles got there that time was because there was a massive fight distracting them, as well as the ring having been destroyed causing a lot of problems. I think this is the answer, as I'm more of a casual fan of Lord of the Rings.

[–]bkalen17 7 points8 points ago

If you read the books, the eagles are very neutral in the conflict up until the end. They only help Gandalf because he is an old friend. But all the reasons you said pretty much sum it up

[–]Aang and Toph have a....rocky relationship.obrienb2 4 points5 points ago

also, it was hypothesized that the ring would in fact corrupt the eagles, causing them to turn on the fellowship. here's the link with a very thorough discussion about it.

[–]thatoneguy211 1 point2 points ago

I had it explained to me once. Basicly, there were a lot of archers, dragons, and other things

(pst) Sauron didn't have any dragons. No one really knows why, but they never came to aid him.

[–]Agurthewise 3 points4 points ago

Not dragons but the Wraiths did have winged beasts under their command. They certainly weren't weak to an air strike.

[–]Tuko is best shipMolomar 0 points1 point ago

I meant the things that the ring wraiths flew on. Wyverns? I don't know what they were. They looked a lot like dragons.

[–]Stupid Turtle Duckstrategolegends 0 points1 point ago

Gandalf says in "Fellowship" that the Rings of Power could potentially be melted by dragonfire, but the intense power in the One Ring would make dragonfire useless. Gandalf also says that there are no known dragons left in the world.

[–]thatoneguy211 0 points1 point ago

Gandalf also says that there are no known dragons left in the world.

Really? I'm not a big LotRs guy, never read the books or anything, but I've seen quite a few places online that they still existed, just no more "great dragons" of which Smaug was the last known.

Here's a quote I found from a letter Tolkien wrote to a fan:

Letter #144 To Naomi Mitchison, 25 April 1954 : Dragons. They had not stopped; since they were active in far later times, close to our own. Have I said anything to suggest the final ending of dragons? If so it should be altered. The only passage I can think of is Vol. I p. 70 : 'there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough'. But that implies, I think, that there are still dragons

[–]Stupid Turtle Duckstrategolegends 0 points1 point ago

I am a casual fan, but that sounds right. I knew there was something special about Smaug and his status as the last, but it seems he was the last "great". Thank you for clarifying.

[–]Grave_OfThe_Illumise 0 points1 point ago

Sauron was so corrupted with power that he literally could not comprehend his enemies trying to destroy the One Ring. He was blinded to the possibility that a man could be handed that kind of power and not use it. As of the Battle of the Black Gate, I believe he is under the impression Aragorn has it. The whole point of the Fellowship was to deliver the Ring secretly to Mount Doom to destroy it before Sauron could even recognize his oversight.

Dark forces had a pretty good control of the skies thanks to the Nazgul and Saruman's crow spies, so flying in a beeline to the volcano would have tipped their hand waaay too early. They would never finish the approach if they telegraphed their plan before getting into Mordor.

Also, as others here have said, getting the Eagles to help you in just about any endeavor is pretty difficult anyway. They prefer to remain neutral in regards to the conflicts of mortals. Entrusting them with the Ring directly to just drop it off without the Fellowship was also a no-go since it involved the same danger allowing Gandalf to carry the ring would have - there was a chance that it would corrupt them and they are too powerful to take that chance with. Another evil Maiar (if that was indeed what they were) was the last thing Middle-Earth needed at the end of its Third Age.

): am i the only one that liked 3rd gen alot?

[–]The Earth King has returnedPopularPKMN 24 points25 points ago

Now on r/Pokemon, it's hard to be open about only liking the 1st gen, because a majority of the people love the newer gens. I personally don't care which gen people prefer, because it's all everyone's opinion. I enjoy them all.
That being said, none of these "insults" really phase me at all. I could really give a shit if some guy's little cousins liked a movie that was bad. They're little kids.

[–]The Great And Powerful BumiNiceAndTruthful 5 points6 points ago

I would have agreed with you. Until I got to the "So it'd basically a British version of Bill and Ted"

But that's because I detest people getting timelines confused, even when talking about timetravel-based shows.

[–]The Earth King has returnedPopularPKMN -2 points-1 points ago

I think you replied to the wrong comment

[–]The Great And Powerful BumiNiceAndTruthful 0 points1 point ago

"That being said, none of these "insults" really phase me at all."

Nope. Right comment. Just... tiny part of much larger comment.

[–]Y-You're oppressing yourself!!Merechan 13 points14 points ago

I also loved 3rd gen. Emerald was my favorite.

[–]SPAAAACE SWORDElv3n 13 points14 points ago

No, you're not the only one.

[–]pyrosoad 10 points11 points ago

I loved Generation 1-3, gen 4 seemed boring to me.

[–]Boomer-Aang SquadMayorEmanuel 6 points7 points ago

Gen 3 is widely considered to be the best of from a gaming perspective. A few people will say that 1 is the best usually because it was the first one they played and therefore has a nostalgia bonus.

[–]Dan here!dan92 2 points3 points ago

I believe Black and White were the highest rated, actually.

[–]regalnerd 2 points3 points ago

Saying any generation was better than any others will start a flame war in any pokemon community, gen 3 gets it more because that is when the fanbase for Gen 1/2 was entering middle school. There were a few legitimate complaints, like not being able to transfer pokemon over from R/B/Y or G/S/C, and not the majority of Kanto/Johto pokemon available until FR/LG came out, but ultimately it really isn't enough to justify the massive amount of shit it gets.

[–]You don't know what I had to do to get seats this near the bear!themiragechild 3 points4 points ago

4th Gen is the worst. 5th is my favorite, but it's incredibly close to 3rd.

[–]crazy-ex 1 point2 points ago

I liked most, but the golems and the weather trio... Not so much.

[–]BabybenderErrday_Im_Hylian 1 point2 points ago

First gen (for me) and favorite.

[–]The First Fartbenderglass_table_girl 0 points1 point ago

I never got to play Gen 4 and 5. :( But I did like the contests thing! (Don't own a DS because I'm cheap as fuck.)

My personal favorite was actually Gen 2, and I'm glad they remade them, though I didn't get to play it.

[–]deathbytray 12 points13 points ago

I love that movie too! James Cameron is quite a visionary. I don't understand how this has anything to do with us, tho.

[–]Exterrobang 9 points10 points ago

Being a part of all of these fandoms, apart from "Homestucks" (whatever that is), I would like to say that bronies don't get pissed off by that statement. Bronies don't really give a shit. And potterheads will, in most cases, politely explain how time travel works in the Harry Potter universe.

[–]Aidinthel 7 points8 points ago

"Homestucks" (whatever that is)

Homestuck is a popular webcomic. I read most of the massive archive and got bored. IMO the earlier parts were the best and then it lost its way.

And potterheads will, in most cases, politely explain how time travel works in the Harry Potter universe.

Really, anyone who's read the books should understand that they can't actually change anything.

[–]I hear that place is really HOPPIN'!Ivestar64 2 points3 points ago

also, the fact that all the timeturners were destroyed in book 5

[–]Exterrobang 1 point2 points ago

Not necessarily all of them. Just the ones in the Ministry. I'm suspecting that there were a couple spread around the UK, and of course, the rest of the world. I also think that they were capable of making new time turners.

[–]Xedma 24 points25 points ago

but ... I did like Problem Sleuth better.

[–]MUSTACHE GUY!DrPeacemaker 16 points17 points ago

I get the feeling most fans wouldn't get too offended. I love Homestuck to death, but Problem Sleuth was fantastic. A better one might be "I skipped the troll parts" or "I skipped everything but the troll parts."

[–]playerIII 12 points13 points ago

My room mates who love homestuck agree that saying "I skipped to chapter 5" is the best way to offend a Homestuck fan.

EDIT: Well look at that.

[–]Still doesn't know what this new series is.AtlasRune 3 points4 points ago

I cannot stand the troll pesterlogs. I loved Homestuck up till then.

[–]Xedma 4 points5 points ago

I started and stayed for the game elements. The game and alchemy system was hilarious and had amazing music. It got really bland when it stopped focusing on Egbert and his gaming adventure.

So I stopped because of those trolls.

[–]Still doesn't know what this new series is.AtlasRune 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, the game elements were amazing. I'd love to see someone use a similar system in an actual game.

[–]drchasedanger 2 points3 points ago

TBH, I bailed on Homestuck once the troll part decided to never end.

[–]VampiricPie 1 point2 points ago

Yeah me too, I just couldn't seem to get into Homestuck. Maybe I should try again.

[–]agrey 3 points4 points ago

ugh, so not worth it.

[–]Yanrogue 7 points8 points ago

I've been seeing this same image pop up on almost every subreddit so far.

[–]Abedeus 6 points7 points ago

What's a Bill and Ted and what does it have to do with a 57 year old science fiction series?

[–]DarthSatoris 5 points6 points ago

Bill and Ted are two teenagers traveling through time in a TELEPHONE box. One of them is played by Keanu Reeves.

[–]Trachyon 1 point2 points ago

An excellent, bodacious movie featuring a teenage Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters. It's basically about how they travel through time to pass their history exam, and it's way better than how I'm describing it now.

[–]syrindigo26 6 points7 points ago

[–]Oh Sokka, you saved me!swimmingisfun 4 points5 points ago

They did? Guess I totally missed that…

[–]Grave_OfThe_Illumise 0 points1 point ago

Also, you can't use time travel in Harry Potter to change anything anyway. (see: ending to Prisoner of Azkaban)

[–]myname_is_judge 0 points1 point ago

Aside from the fact that they used time travel to keep Buckbeak and Sirius alive.

I've heard the time turner one several times but people forget (and it's one of my favorite things about the Potter-verse) is CONTINUITY IS MAINTAINED. When they went back in time they didn't change anything because they had already done it in the past. You can't change history.

I had never even heard of it in passing. I doubted it was the first result (the comic) until I saw a know your meme page with the comic and pictures of people with the horns like in the link above.

[–]Trachyon 0 points1 point ago

A very, very, very large webcomic that sometimes uses flash animations and games to tell the story, iirc.

I haven't read it, but I hear that very convoluted, and starts with some characters going into a video game, or something.

[–]THE 3 TOKKANEERS: EwoksAndJawas, Forgetheriver, andartacuno53 15 points16 points ago

Potterfans just mad because its logical

[–]Join the "New Let's Watch and Discuss!"EmailIsNotOptional 49 points50 points ago

The Harry Potter universe, as a lot of other stories and universes (probably ours as well) with time travel in it, uses the Stable Time Loop trope. You can't change what you know already happened. Same reason why you couldn't kill Hitler even if you have a time machine. Because if someone actually did it, then that's what we would learn in history classes.

Many descriptions of scenes in Prisoner of Azkaban are vague and have double meanings. They didn't changed the past events, they merely fulfilled the circumstances that made them happen in the first place. Buckbeak was never killed, but because we have the same perspective as Harry's, we thought that he really did. It would be different if the writing uses the 3rd person omniscient perspective, but of course, that wouldn't be fun at all.

[–]matchu 0 points1 point ago

Still, the presence and use of the time turner does alter the universe. If Hermione had never gotten a time turner, she wouldn't have taken all those extra classes. And if they hadn't used the time turner, Buckbeak would have died. So, we're left to ask ourselves, why does the universe allow us to save Buckbeak with time travel but doesn't let us save the planet?

One answer might be that, in Buckbeak's case, it was possible for the events to have only seemingly happened: the kids go back to save him because they think he's dead. That wouldn't really be feasible in the Voldemort case, since there's just too much evidence of Voldemort's evil. It can't be waved away as a misinterpretation like in Buckbeak's case.

It's not a really satisfactory answer, but it works for me.

[–]TigerTrap 3 points4 points ago

Still, the presence and use of the time turner does alter the universe.

Only in the sense that doing anything at all "alters the universe".

The time turner cannot be used to change anything about the past, though.

Buckbeak was always saved using the time turner. That's the way it happened to begin with. Nothing was really "altered" (in the sense that they didn't 'alter' Buckbeak's death by going back in time, he never died to begin with, he was always saved by them).

[–]lightslash53 2 points3 points ago

Buckbeak would have died without the time turner, what you're saying doesn't make sense. The only reason things happened the way they did is because they went back in time.

[–]matchu 0 points1 point ago

Derp, typo fixed. I think my brain changed paths halfway through "wouldn't have been saved" to "would have died". Thanks!

[–]firex726 -3 points-2 points ago

Wouldn't they then just make a new timeline (BTTF 2) if they changed what had already been established?

[–]Join the "New Let's Watch and Discuss!"EmailIsNotOptional 0 points1 point ago

While there are some stories that uses that concept, most don't, because it would just be confusing to the audience.

Let's say that they used the time turner to kill Voldemort years before, and it worked. What that'll do is, like you said, create a new timeline where everyone is happy and the conflict never happened. But the old timeline remains, because if not where did the killer (the time traveler) came from? Frankly, we would be far more interested on what would happen in the original timeline.

[–]I didn't ask for all this flying and magicBenDes1313 23 points24 points ago

Actually all the time turners broke during the battle of the department of mysteries and up until that time the ministry was denying Voldemort's return so they would not have given any time turners out

[–]Malikizer 8 points9 points ago

It's about damn time someone knows what they're talking about.

[–]pokepat460 -1 points0 points ago

Dumbledore, probably the most convinced person on the planet(is there a planet is Harry Potter? If not you get the idea) of Voldemort's return had one, and gave it to Hermione.

[–]I didn't ask for all this flying and magicBenDes1313 12 points13 points ago

Not true Hermione revived hers from the ministry in her third year after much convincing from McGongall about how impressive of a student she was and she was forced to return it at the end of book 3.

[–]Zutara. Even if it is a bit late.SonicIceFlare 1 point2 points ago

She wasn't forced. She dropped out of Divination halfway through the year and decided to drop Arithmancy at the end of the year so she'd have a normal schedule.

[–]I didn't ask for all this flying and magicBenDes1313 3 points4 points ago

By forced I meant she had to give it back since she no longer had a reason to keep it.

[–]Zutara. Even if it is a bit late.SonicIceFlare 0 points1 point ago

Harry Potter uses the same planet as us and everything. Just with magic and in the 90's

[–]Zutara. Even if it is a bit late.SonicIceFlare 0 points1 point ago

Changing something that major could seriously mess up the time line. And if turning the time turner once equals going back only an hour....that'll take a while. Plus they were all destroyed in the 5th book so they couldn't use them after.

I was thinking of this as i was typing my reply and chuckling to myself.

[–]rosejoshuad 2 points3 points ago

Bill and teds aired in 1989. Doctor who started in 1963. Whom ripped off who?

[–]skoberlink 2 points3 points ago

I've really enjoyed watching this float through all of my favorite subs.

[–]Varis259 3 points4 points ago

As a Brony I can confirm this to be true. Just reading that made me HHNNNNNNNNGGG

[–]Just like the good old days.WainScoting 1 point2 points ago

I read it and thought "Who would think that?" until I remembered that I enjoyed the movie as a child as one of the few VHS that I had, and that the Mane 6 originate from Faust's love for the G1 toys. I think I've fixed that problem. To each their own. (I highly prefer FiM, though, so better? Maybe that's still a sticking point...)

Ad for "the movie" referred to here, I don't have any idea what they're talking about. What movie? The one with the tall blue people?

[–]Varis259 0 points1 point ago

Either that or the one by M. Knight Shamalamadingdong.

[–]Dai_Li_Agent 2 points3 points ago

The Earth King has invited you to /r/Laogai

[–]Twitcher77 0 points1 point ago

You contradicted all of the other brony comments.

[–]deja-vu-comment 1 point2 points ago

Actually, the author made a fixed version with a thing that actually would piss off most of us.

.

[–]albinodrow 16 points17 points ago

The fixed version is an update for the Homestuck fandom...

There's no difference for the AtLA fandom! :)

[–]FeroxDeoVacuusVinco 4 points5 points ago

That account's a bot that doesn't take context into account. It just reposts the top comment of a repost.

[–]albinodrow 0 points1 point ago

Oh, okay. I'll tag it as such.

[–]Master Dreambendersandman0893 1 point2 points ago

We continue to deny the existence of... it.

A nerd with ID.
