Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Ha. Shaq fu. Ridiculous

[–]kd490 66 points67 points ago

I especially like that it's one of the circled games that this person wanted.

[–]MrFatalistic 57 points58 points ago

Sometimes you could only ask for the most affordable game at the time, which is why I ended up with a copy of Krusty's fun house...

[–]terari 47 points48 points ago

I ended with Mystical Ninja starring goemon for the n64.

It's actually great, mind you.

[–]MrFatalistic 18 points19 points ago

My best "everything turned out ok" was Demon Crest for $6 new at a sam goody story...

There were very few copies of that game printed and is an underrated classic IMO.

[–]Biduleman 9 points10 points ago

For me it was F-Zero X at 79.99$ (CDN). Zelda Ocarina of Time was 124.99 ಠ_ಠ

[–]ZwortniK 6 points7 points ago

I got it for $20 relatively close to when it came out. It's still one of my all time favorites.

It's the preeminent "hidden gem" for the SNES; when people make forum posts requesting underrated 16-bit games they have to specifically say "no Demon's Crest" to avoid being flooded by suggestions for it.

[–]Bearrrrrr 4 points5 points ago

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU!

I have been wracking my brain for years to try to remember this game, but I could only remember tiny fragments of it- never enough to find a title online.

That is all! :)

[–]jhawknog 4 points5 points ago

Most underrated game ever. How could you not like a game where your character could do the worm?!

[–]Tobislu 0 points1 point ago

That is one of the most mixed games I've played. Great concept, awful level design and enemies.

[–]netbiscuit 6 points7 points ago

I liked that game...

[–]TheChrisHill 2 points3 points ago

That game is the bane of my existence. Even now at age 25, there are levels where I throw the controller down and yell "fuck it, this shit is ridiculous "

[–]SonicFlash01 10 points11 points ago

The sprites were pretty good. Story was awful and the concept was stupid. The music was a prime example of Sega Genesis music.

[–]bdubyageo 19 points20 points ago

They couldn't even ask 32.99 for it. They had to lower the price to 32.98

[–]BulletBilll 7 points8 points ago

From what I've learned it if ends in 99 it's usually normal retail price. 98 is reduced price and 97 is special offer. Or something like that. And usually goes by steps of 5 cents

[–]LacksMass 8 points9 points ago

When I worked retail we had a similar thing for clearances items. Each time the price was cut in dollars it would go up in cents. ...That made no sense. Let me illustrate.

Clearance price: $10.01

Still isn't selling, reduced to: $8.02

Still isn't selling, reduced to: $5.03

IIRC after the third cut it was either destroyed our sent back to manufacturer.

[–]OscarMiguelRamirez 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's so you can tell by looking at the price exactly what the deal was with the item.

Why does that matter? Usually there is a different return policy for clearance items. If it ended in .03 you know the person got it for dirt cheap and saw posted signs about it not being returnable.

[–]sovnade 14 points15 points ago

There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who loved Shaq Fu, and dirty liars.

[–]squeegep 2 points3 points ago

Fuck I hated that game. Didn't stop me playing it every day though.

[–]KuztomX 525 points526 points ago

Can we knock this shit off? This is reposted almost every month. Each time we find out these are Canadian prices, not US.

[–]HiImTed 35 points36 points ago

sort of a newb to reddit here, thanks for the info, I never saw this before.

[–]bladepuppetmster 35 points36 points ago

Can we knock this shit off and just enjoy content? I been on reddit for almost 2 years now, and I have never EVER seen this post before.

god damn Debbie downers man.

[–]Thor_2099 10 points11 points ago

Agreed. First time I remember seeing this on reddit as well.

[–]Serinus 52 points53 points ago

Yeah, I was there (in the 80s). Prices weren't higher than $50-60 that I can remember.

Edit: People are saying a few games went as high as $75, and a few others went as high as $90. I obviously wasn't including games that had special editions with collector's guides or separate hardware (guns or controllers or whatnot).

Still, these are Canadian prices being passed off as American prices to make it more sensationalist than it actually is. In no way, shape, or form did SNES Sporting News Baseball ever go for $89.99 USD.

[–]kryptoniteboots 76 points77 points ago

80s snes, what witchcraft is this? If we're talking 90s, UMK3 for Genesis was definitely $75 from Toys R Us. I remember the deal I made with my mom to get that shit.

[–]Vsx 49 points50 points ago

Most games were definitely between $60 and $80.

[–]k2nxl 34 points35 points ago

When Starfox first came out for SNES it was $100 USD at Toys R US. I had to convince my parents to buy it for me by giving up 6 months of allowance. It was worth it. The best game I ever played and I still have the game and box.

[–]Vsx 44 points45 points ago

Yes, Starfox was an exception because the cartridge cost more to manufacture. It included a processor called the Super FX which was needed to render the 3D polygons. At the time it was a HUGE DEAL, I remember being stunned at how awesome this game looked.

[–]DWsharky 8 points9 points ago

Stunt race fx was also a great game that utilized that chip.

[–]heart_mons_pubis 2 points3 points ago

Street Fighter II was an expensive one as well. I don't remember the price though.

[–]aywwts4 6 points7 points ago

Starfox for SNES was a hardware upgrade in a cart.

[–]elwood78 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I definitely remember SNES games costing $60+ when new.. I bought quite a few.

[–]skewp 21 points22 points ago

Street Fighter 2 was definitely like $80-90 USD back in the day. Most new, popular SNES games were around $60-75. Some were higher due to demand, others were higher because of the extra hardware in their cartridges. Last year's annualized sports game was usually like $30-40 because they were trying to dump them. Other older or less popular games could run from $40 to $60.

The Game Boy game prices do make me think these are Canadian prices (I remember GB games being ~$35 on average), but to try and claim there weren't any $80+ SNES games is just inaccurate.

[–]KindBass 5 points6 points ago

I still remember getting my parents to shell out $80 for Mortal Kombat II. Also the $100 Earthbound that came with the Players Guide.

[–]beigemore 4 points5 points ago

I bought Earthbound on clearance for $20 at Best Buy. Also, I think I got SF2 for $79.99 the week of release. That one really surprised me when I didn't have to beg and my dad just agreed.

[–]slashblot 4 points5 points ago

Street Fighter 2 bought at launch for 105$ USD in New York it was a 16Mbit cart, the first of its kind. Final Fantasy III was I believe a 24Mbit cart and a couple of years later could be had for about 103 Cdn after tax.

[–]Rudy69 2 points3 points ago

Bigger SNES games were a lot more expensive too (they had more memory on the cartridge so the game cost more to produce, unlike DVDs now which are all the same price to produce whether you use 1GB or 7)

[–]dontbiteitholmes 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I can vouch for this. I went with my rich friend and his mom to buy Street Fighter 2 the week it came out and it was like $75 which blew me away because I had never seen a game sell for over $60 at the time.

[–]HookDragger 1 point2 points ago

And this is what taught me never to buy the game when it first comes out... it will be a lot cheaper and just as fun in a month.

[–]Incoherentrant 3 points4 points ago

I remember seeing games for 69 and 79...no higher though. There were a TON of 69.99 games on the N64.

[–]jp07 1 point2 points ago

There is one exception I remember quite well. Street fighter 2 when it was new was 70 bucks. I payed it cause I loved that game, worth it.

[–]BulletBilll 6 points7 points ago

Still $60 in 1992 is over $98 today.

[–]Serinus -1 points0 points ago

That still means the picture is bullshit.

[–]BulletBilll 8 points9 points ago

It's possible that these are Canadian prices. Because as a Canadian these prices look awful familiar.

EDIT Also with data taken from the Royal Bank of Canada, if these are actually the Canadian prices, I found the average exchange rate that will help convert it into USD. Considering NHL 1995 is in there I took exchange rates from 1994-01-01 till 1996-01-01 and came up with an average exchange rate of $1 CAD = $0.73255 USD. You can do the math from there.

[–]GillaMobster 2 points3 points ago

you do the math

[–]Enemii 4 points5 points ago

No it just means that its not american. Try and remeber that the majority of people in the world don't use the USD. Just because it is not your currency doen't mean it lacks meaning. Taking the game that costs 95 CAD and assuming tthat it was released in 1995 the cost in USD today would be ~97$. Where is the bullshit?

[–]sp00kyd00m 2 points3 points ago

my immediate guess was australia. arent some games still close to $100 there? maybe i'm retarded...

[–]Randompaul 2 points3 points ago

This explains why I rented so many games

[–]Fatsteve 3 points4 points ago

You're dumb. Earthworm Jim was 85 bucks AMERICAN.

[–]lindobro 17 points18 points ago

At first I wasn't at all shocked by this, then I remembered I live in Australia.

[–]dacool561 45 points46 points ago

This is why rental stores stayed in business for so long

[–]kerred 20 points21 points ago

My dad died of a heart attack in December when i was a freshman in high school.

He got me Final Fantasy 3 before he died to give to me for Christmas. My mom wrapped it and gave it to me that Christmas morning. I still remember the $74.99 price tag. Best $75 game ever.

[–]beatleslove25 2 points3 points ago

sorry to hear about your dad. do you ever revisit that game? i imagine it brings back old memories of your father

[–]Moozhe 22 points23 points ago

NBA Jam Tournament Edition?

HE'S ON FIRE!!

[–]Waywardcross 16 points17 points ago

BOOMSHAKALAKA!!

[–]ParkdaleBatavus 13 points14 points ago

From downtown!

[–]Fawful 10 points11 points ago

Welcome to Australia, where the prices are the same and reason doesn't matter.

[–]SensibleMadness 8 points9 points ago

This is why I never had an SNES. I had to live with my old NES and go to my rich friend's house if I wanted to play more modern games.

[–]pixelrage 6 points7 points ago

My NES lasted from 1986 until 1999 when Dreamcast came out

[–]bliss72 22 points23 points ago

Moment of silence for Dreamcast :(

[–]Clippy_For_Reddit 34 points35 points ago

[–]TheGesundheitTheroy 11 points12 points ago

There was a Stargate game? How did I not know about this!

[–]CrimsonVim 4 points5 points ago

The GameBoy version was crap. It was just a matching puzzle game that really wasn't very fun to play.

[–]JulesVerneFJ 2 points3 points ago

Probably the only Stargate game ever to get published :(

[–]bliss72 5 points6 points ago

NBA jam was soo worth it

[–]LetsGoBohs 2 points3 points ago

Especially TE, worth every penny.

[–]shifty1032231 12 points13 points ago

$94 for a Bass Fishing game!

[–]mcneebs 14 points15 points ago

To be fair, Bass Masters Classic was probably the second best fishing game around at the time, behind Super Black Bass.

Signed, someone who's never gone fishing in his life.

[–]h3rp3r 1 point2 points ago

King salmon. Realistic trolling action!

[–]Arbucks 2 points3 points ago

I own this game, and after the Donkey Kong series, I played the shit out of it.

[–]donkey_punch_kong64 4 points5 points ago

I remember seeing a copy of DOOM 64 priced at $110 about 12 years ago.

[–]nosprings 3 points4 points ago

I remember getting Earthbound from Toys-R-Us and it being $80, though it was well worth it because it came in a huge box and came with the players guide (with scratch and sniff cards motherfucker)

[–]ghastlyactions 1 point2 points ago

Which currency is being used for this? Is this a Canadian flyer from the late 80's / early 90's when the exchange rate was poor? I lived through this and I don't remember any games being anywhere near that expensive.

[–]stuielooie 2 points3 points ago

Ah you circled the games you wanted as well!

[–]jackedup388 13 points14 points ago

this is before the inflation. think about it

[–]kerdon 12 points13 points ago

So basically, adjusted for inflation, each game would be like buying a new console?

[–]BulletBilll 3 points4 points ago

Well I calculated that $60 in 1992 was is over $98. So yeah...

[–]gutter_is_a_tool 3 points4 points ago

and before you convert it to US dollars

[–]halo1 6 points7 points ago

I paid $90 for Street Fighter II on release date for SNES. Worth it.

[–]HakuHakuHaku 4 points5 points ago

It makes me appreciate the fact that $60 for a game maybe isn't too horrible.

[–]Enderlamington 2 points3 points ago

Try living in Australia, if a game is $60 it is half price.

[–]Darierl 1 point2 points ago

Very true, I remember paying over £60.00 for Super Streetfighter 2.

[–]SkitTrick 1 point2 points ago

to be fair NBA Jam was worth anything they asked for it.

[–]boboobeardude 2 points3 points ago

The economy was different then. $80 was $50. $3.50 was like 2013's $12

[–]Hezkezl 0 points1 point ago

$32.98 for ShaqFu and it still never sold any copies.

[–]Broxdude 2 points3 points ago

Hold on... there was a STARGATE game?

[–]You-are_wrong 2 points3 points ago

holy shit there was a stargate game?!

[–]reign 1 point2 points ago

NBA Jam was worth every penny. I still can't believe my brother traded it away back in the day.

[–]MikeTheBum 2 points3 points ago

In Massachusetts, almost all of the video games at most of the major stores (K-Mart, Toys 'R Us, Child World) seemed to hover between the $50 and $60 mark from the NES days right up to Game Cube and Wii.

The most expensive game I remember seeing was Super Mario RPG, which was $70.

I remember certain stores being higher, like Service Merchandise and Sears and anything out of a catalog like Fingerhut. I think most games from catalogs were close to $100 plus shipping and handling.

[–]ChrisVee 1 point2 points ago

You must be Canadian.

[–]Thorse 7 points8 points ago

Yup. Every time I see people complain about the $60 game model I am amazed at how spoiled these kids were. Did they not know how expensive games and systems were back then?

[–]W00DERS0N 2 points3 points ago

Hence my teenage shoplifting habit.

[–]anikan72 0 points1 point ago

This is why I can't get behind people bitching about a $60 dollar game being too expensive or not worth it. When I was growing up I usually got 1 game and made it last for months before I could afford another one. This generation has been very inexpensive by comparison

[–]l0ngsh07 0 points1 point ago

They are still pretty high! Looked for Mega Man X on eBay the other day, cheapest one I found was £40 (or about $64)

[–]Stanlot 1 point2 points ago

Where is Mario's left hand? ಠ_ಠ

[–]0rangecake 0 points1 point ago

those prices aren't even adjusted for inflation, i dont even want to imagine what they translate into today's money

[–]tehrod 1 point2 points ago

$32.99 for shaq fu! What a deal, no wonder all my friends had that flaming brown bag of shit.

[–]shiram 0 points1 point ago

Pre-ordered Breath of Fire II back in the day, and not only my local store had it delayed for a whole month, but it was 98$. Totally worth it.

[–]ClassyMcSass 0 points1 point ago

I remember I asked for Super Mario all stars when I got my SNES. Instead I got Breath of Fire because it was only $20. If only I had known how much better it was at the time.

[–]Khorpo -1 points0 points ago

I remember that I bought a Playstation over a N64 because the N64 games were over 100$ each. Bad move for my childhood.

[–]SnorgesLuisBorges 0 points1 point ago

I understand paying $90 for NBA Jam T.E. but I can never understand anyone paying more than $2 for Shaq Fu. Easily one of the worst games ever made for the SNES.

[–]virusmike 1 point2 points ago

some games where very expensive because with the snes you could intergrate second cpu in the cadrige if i remenber correctly megaman x2 as something like this for the crappy 3d ''boss'' and some game was bigger also so you need more memory in the cadrige so it add more to the cost production.. if you compare with today media...a CD or DVD is freaking cheap to produce i feal more rip off for a 60$ dvd than 100$ Cadrige

[–]Zandt88 1 point2 points ago

Now adjust it for inflation and see how much it really sucked.

[–]SweatpantsDV 0 points1 point ago

Yes they were. I got a new game on my birthday and christmas, and that's what I played until my next b-day/christmas.

[–]tagrav 0 points1 point ago

i remember new N64 titles selling for $80 USD. or was i just a kid and had my numbers off.

[–]the_ocelot 0 points1 point ago

The Acclaim logo makes me tear up.

BOTS!!, you will be missed..

[–]palerthanrice 1 point2 points ago

Shaq-fu is still pretty affordable.

[–]tallowspammo 0 points1 point ago

I remember it cost my mom 80$ for MK2

[–]Salanderfan 0 points1 point ago

Now it takes less than two seconds to get an emulated version. If only that were possible for modern 7GB games.

[–]Busalonium 0 points1 point ago

Australian here. No they weren't.

[–]horriblydishonest 0 points1 point ago

Should be "Damn... SNES games were expensive in Canadian loonies"

[–]randomprecision 0 points1 point ago

This is not American. Highest prices for games i can remember was 8 bit NES games -- when they released they were over $70 US. That's what I made my dad pay for Zelda at Toys R' Us anyway :)

[–]Yamieddie 0 points1 point ago

They went up to upwards of a 100 dollars, now that ain't right you, bunch of greedy bastards if you ask me.

[–]burghfan1 1 point2 points ago

NBA JAM TE is totally worth it. I played the shit out of that game.

[–]llamas_ofthe_bahamas 1 point2 points ago

My mom bought me Donkey Kong Country when I was 9 years old. I still remember how much she paid, $75.

[–]Chewy79 0 points1 point ago

are those canadian prices? I dont remember games being over $65

[–]Me_hav_ADD 1 point2 points ago

Could these have been Canadian or Australian prices maybe?

[–]GonorrheaStick 0 points1 point ago

Wow, the most expensive games were sports games?

[–]squarer00t 1 point2 points ago

N64 games were taking the piss in the 90s....£60 for games.

I vaguely remember a court case or a ruling in England where there had to be a cap on the price of games and had to lower the price.

[–]google_search_expert 0 points1 point ago

mario's expression says it all.

[–]HiImTed 1 point2 points ago

NBA JAM was NINETY FUCKEN DOLLARS???

I play that on my phone now while taking a shit :O

[–]evanset6 0 points1 point ago

I remember my dad buying me Mario Bros. 3 for the NES and it was 75$.... people bitch about games being too expensive but don't remember back in the day when they were REALLY out of control.

[–]SuedeBuffet 0 points1 point ago

This catalog was more expensive than the local toy stores if I remember right

[–]twunger 0 points1 point ago

What's worse is there's not a single good game on that. People paid that much for the bad ones >_>

[–]AsheCD 0 points1 point ago

A lot of US SNES games were more expensive. I recall "Chrono Trigger" being 79.99 at release.

[–]Patbach 0 points1 point ago

Back in the day I paid 115$+tx (135$ or so..) for Chrono Trigger. Back then Canadian dollars was much weaker..

[–]Center6701 1 point2 points ago

Star-fox for the SNES was like 120 when it first came out because of the FX CHIP!!!

[–]carsalesman703 0 points1 point ago

100 bucks for nba jam. Id pay that all day.

[–]LegendaryCheez 0 points1 point ago

I remember paying over 70 dollars in the US for Donkey Kong Country 3 when it came out.

[–]Boviced -1 points0 points ago

Good thing mom and dad never bought my games, they'd be broke. Thanks Santa!

[–]bhaaat 0 points1 point ago

Except for Shaq Fu...

[–]The_Yar 0 points1 point ago

FF3 was US$82.99 when it came out, I think that was about as expensive as games got if there wasn't some special hardware involved. For the past several generations, though, the video game industry has been price-fixing at $59.99.

[–]Scott674 0 points1 point ago

[–]heh_wut 1 point2 points ago

is this the new thing now? instead of bitching about how games are so expensive now bitching about how games were so expensive then??

[–]DerHelm 1 point2 points ago

I never realized how much my mom loved me till just now. Cause I'll be damned if I pay that much, even on my self now. bbl, I have to call some one I don't call as much as I should.

[–]the_fatman_dies 0 points1 point ago

Take into account before the internet, it was much harder to buy things in general, and comparison shop especially. You might only have had one or two stores in the area that sold games. There were almost no used game stores around at the time, so you had to buy new, or used from a rental store maybe. Also, that place was ridiculously overpriced, the average game was about $50-60 then.

[–]BadMoonRisin 0 points1 point ago

Is this in America?

[–]atwork_sfw 1 point2 points ago

Top Gear 3000. Fuck yes.

[–]RumblezMan 0 points1 point ago

Kid, you know nothing about hell. Games @ Brazil are (converted to dollar) normally 75-100 and release titles 100+

[–]Ilnez 0 points1 point ago

Damn, is this for real? I don't remember this. Mind you back in the day I got all of my games as gifts for my birthday/christmas so I never really worried about the price tag.

[–]blundermine 1 point2 points ago

TIL there was a stargate game for SNES

[–]IanTheRed420 0 points1 point ago

Where are you Canada?

[–]Hobo-With-A-Shotgun 1 point2 points ago

[–]wadad17 0 points1 point ago

Wow, by that math, a 60$ game now, would have cost 40$ then.

[–]stinkmeaner92 0 points1 point ago

$90 for Nba Jam? Worth it.

[–]Taysty 1 point2 points ago

I would still pay $90 if it was the only way I could play NBA Jam. Loved that game.

[–]rubben94 0 points1 point ago

NBA Jams is understandable

[–]Dudewitbow 0 points1 point ago

that's why i bought my games off the flea market. Mexicans know how to price great games.(lived in a mexican dense area at the time)

[–]retardedsushi 0 points1 point ago

With clothes like that you KNOW that kid's parents have money

[–]domdunc 0 points1 point ago

I remember when Turok came out for N64 it was £70. Definitely the most I have ever spent on a game.

*£102 in today's money, almost enough to buy a whole console

[–]effervescence 0 points1 point ago

$45 for Game Boy games? Pray Square-Enix never sees this. I might never be able to afford a decent new 3DS game again.

[–]Charlie_Odell 0 points1 point ago

i vaguely remember games being that expensive. I remember that donkey kong 64 was 80$ though. that was a great game.

[–]megatom0 0 points1 point ago

And people complain about DLC today...

[–]maxout2142 1 point2 points ago

Haha we have things like steam sales these days and people still bitch about game prices, like we "have to pirate" because of injustice, or your own bad excuses :D

[–]Pinkfoodstamp 0 points1 point ago

Looks like someone had circled their christmas wishlist, this is how I use to submit mine to my parents, then I just hope they didn't accidentally get me Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

[–]krispwnsu 0 points1 point ago

Fuck! And the value of the dollar has dropped a lot since then. I wonder what the equivalent price would be today.

[–]danosaurus_ 1 point2 points ago

i distinctly remember games being like 40 bucks

[–]LeMadnessofKingHippo 0 points1 point ago

Except for Shaq Fu...you could hardly give that one away.

[–]Asilidae000 0 points1 point ago

But you forget, compared to some of the "huge" games that should have hours and hours of play on DVD. there were only like 16MB games that lasted forever. I still play my SNES hardcore, its all in terms of quality sir even if they were expensive. I assume now due to the difference in year each game would be worth $200 new? lulz?

[–]ThR34Tx 1 point2 points ago

By the time the conversion of dollar/mexican peso were around 3.50/4.50 ... I would had say: "NOT BAD".

[–]Missionary 0 points1 point ago

I grew up in the 80s in NYC. I remember Super Mario 2 and 3 both selling for $90-$95 for the NES where I live. Master System games were cheaper, the most expensive would be close to $75.

[–]AYO_jun 0 points1 point ago

SHAQ FU WAS THE SHIT!!

[–]Blazingwand 1 point2 points ago

THERE WAS A STARGATE GAME!?! How was it?

[–]Duncanconstruction 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god Shaq Fu. Loved that game.

[–]Morphyism 0 points1 point ago

No way, games were never that high.

[–]IhateKatie 0 points1 point ago

I fucking love bust- a- move.

I'm pretty sure I bought Final Fantasy III for $85.

Honestly games prices havn't changed since I was a kid. (26 now) SNES games cost about $50 back in the 90's and a Wii game still costs about $50.

[–]skrillabobcat 0 points1 point ago

yeah before the economy crashed. haha, NBA JAM was totally worth it. still play today!

[–]jonbrown2 0 points1 point ago

Where is this from? Those can't be american dollars, can they!?

[–]redsoxfan8227 0 points1 point ago

I remember 60 was highest I ever saw or at least remember. Still charging that shit too. They need to come down to 40 at least

SHAQ FU

[–]dudSpudson 0 points1 point ago

I remember buying Super Mario 64 for like 80 bucks when I was a kid

[–]Beerman3000 0 points1 point ago

NBA Jam... Best sports game still to this day

[–]allhailxenu 0 points1 point ago

Are the ones that are circled the ones you wanted your parents to get you? I did that shit all the time!

[–]tdmoney -1 points0 points ago

Most snes games were $30-50 unless you bought them right when they first came out. Then they could vary anywhere from $50-80. I do recall paying about $70 for Street Fighter 2 at launch. Final Fantasy II was $75.

There were pretty big differences between the retailers back then. Toys R Us and Kay bee would be a good $10 more expensive than Walmart.

Games at $80+ is believable if it was a launch title at one of the premium retailers. Walmart would easily beat that price by $15.

I vividly remember Street Fighter 2 Turbo being $75.

[–]Atomik23 0 points1 point ago

Were they really that much?

[–]thecreator1337 0 points1 point ago

69.99 Giggity

[–]Hyperboloidof2sheets 0 points1 point ago

My dad got me NFL quarterback club for Christmas one year... I think I need to go call him and thank him. I played that game to death.

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

They might have been expensive for a couple of weeks, but after that the price always went down to $30-40, unlike now where a 3 year old game still costs $70 with $100 worth of DLC. Plus I do not remember ever seeing $90 games.

[–]batquux 0 points1 point ago

SNES game... that's a hundred dollar bill right there.

[–]Endlssmmr85 0 points1 point ago

Can we just stop and realiz that Shaq-Fu is the cheapest game on there and easily the most superior.

[–]toadwarrior 1 point2 points ago

This was just posted like last week and last they didn't point out it was Canadian prices either. A country who, at the time, had currency that was worth a lot less than the dollar and higher tax.

[–]trampus1 0 points1 point ago

I remember buying Raw for $95 with my christmas money one year. It's one of 2 games I bought with my own money, the other was some shitty Ren & Stimpy platformer.

[–]shm00ps 0 points1 point ago

replayability, or however you spelled that word...

[–]mattatmac 0 points1 point ago

I think what people are missing here is that even if the price was/is higher than our current generation of games, these cartridges actually had memory and other expensive components as opposed to the current DVD standard that is DIRT CHEAP to reproduce, there's no memory it's all just binary etched into a disc. The only reason we still pay $60 for current generation games is because we always have, this is ridiculous when you consider that most people purchase titles online with their own bandwidth and store the information on a hard drive that they purchased.

[–]brandonw00 0 points1 point ago

I remember my mom paid $80 for Donkey Kong 64. Now I sometimes won't buy a game on sale on Steam for $7

[–]fknrat 0 points1 point ago

that piece of shit WWF Raw game was almost $100?!

[–]spellbunny 0 points1 point ago

I distincly remember paying $70 for super mario all stars from Toys R us with my own money and it wasn't brand new.

[–]Turbis 0 points1 point ago

SNES games weren't expensive, current gen games are cheap.

[–]phil325 0 points1 point ago

Shaq-fu was the most overpriced one on here

[–]chiefsfan71308 0 points1 point ago

I never got to get the popular games, I got whatever weird games were ten dollars

[–]danintexas 0 points1 point ago

Look at the old school Atari 2600 games. Why I find the whole - games are to expensive thing annoying. They have never been cheaper - like ever.

[–]amishzombie 1 point2 points ago

What the fuck is wrong with Mario's mouth?!

[–]SuperBicycleTony 0 points1 point ago

And now each and every one of those games is a Rom that you'll mess with for 15 minutes and forget about forever.

[–]Phritz777 1 point2 points ago

Shaq-fu: Worth every penny

[–]stevecobb 1 point2 points ago

I think I actually own that magazine... too lazy and tired to dig it out...
