Two happiest days of a boat owner's life:

  • Day they buy the boat.
  • Day they sell the boat.

[–]ShittehKitteh 9 points10 points ago

Truth. A boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money.

[–]Firewasp987 4 points5 points ago

really? T-pain and those other guys makes it seem awesome..

[–]crash331 3 points4 points ago

There may be an exception to this rule if you are filthy rich and have others to care for the boat.

Just so you know, it comes from a video of Björk's, called Triumph of a Heart.

You may or may not enjoy it.

Accounting, engineering, IT, and finance are where the majority of the paid internships are. In fact as I sit here pooping, I'll be paid a total of, assuming a 15 minute shit with an hourly rate of $23.50 an hour, less taxes and 401k distributions, about $5. And I'll have a pretty good case of pink knees once my shit is completed.

[–]wolfpackk 8 points9 points ago

You get paid 23.50 as an intern? Engineering? That's what I'll be getting paid when I go full time :(.

[–]EasyReddits 10 points11 points ago

Yep, I'm in software engineering. I'm getting $25 an hour, some of which I am being paid to type this message right now. Edit: i accidentally a word

[–]wolfpackk 3 points4 points ago

I'm in data mining and only get 10. Sucks to be me.

[–]filox 10 points11 points ago

Mine deeper.

[–]ChriztianW1998 4 points5 points ago

But not straight down.

[–]EliteT 1 point2 points ago

But not too deep.

[–]reddit_all_before 3 points4 points ago

Have fun at Initech

[–]LAXNover 2 points3 points ago

Other software engineering internships pay even more... It is almost ridiculous how much they pay. 80% or so of a full time employee.

[–]otakucode 4 points5 points ago

It is NOT ridiculous how much they pay.

What is ridiculous is how insanely money-generating software is. Automation is absolutely CRAZY in terms of how much productivity it enables. If people were being paid realistically, they'd be making at LEAST 75% more than they currently are. However, wages stopped growing in 1980. While in the 30 years prior to 1980 the average salary of the lower 90% of the economy grew by 75%, from 1980 to 2010 it only grew by 1%. Adjusting for inflation, it actually went DOWN. Yet, productivity is unimaginably high in every field mostly because of computers and software. Senior executives have had it good for the past 30 years, their average salary has gone up by 480+%.

[–]wolfpackk 1 point2 points ago

The CS intern on my team that helps the internal application developers only makes 12.5, I should tell him to ask for a raise!

[–]robboywonder 0 points1 point ago

this thread is making me sad.

[–]LAXNover 1 point2 points ago

If he enjoys what he's doing then that should be enough. But as a CS intern last year I was making close to $38 an hour plus perks. But it all depends on where in the industry you are and what you are focused on. That was in a tech company, if a company is focused on other things but needs CS then it usually is lower.

[–]wolfpackk 1 point2 points ago

wtf $38 plus perks?

I find that hard to believe. The company I work for is Acxiom and we have software developers on my team they just don't offer internships in that role, if only. The highest paid CS intern I know is only making 20/hour and the only perk he has is a parking spot.

[–]LAXNover 0 points1 point ago

Google and Microsoft both pay around that amount. I'm not sure about other companies, I haven't had a chance to interact with them that much. Intern pay has definitely gone way up though, even 2 years ago I was making only 20-something/hr. The past year has been crazy.

[–]wolfpackk 0 points1 point ago

I could see Google and Microsoft paying that much. In my neck of the woods most tech companies are in the 2000-6000 employees range and pay from 10-20. Damn I thought 10 bucks was good when I first started.

[–]PokemonMasterMax 0 points1 point ago

As a former Microsoft intern, I can say that I got paid over $40 per hour. It does depend where you work though. The west coast pays a lot, although the standard of living is much higher, so it even's out somewhat.

[–]xScribbled 0 points1 point ago

It's not hard to believe at all. I am working at a tech company is Silicon Valley making $35/hr plus I get free housing which equates to an extra $1000 a month. I also get free meals, a MacBook, transportation passes, and countless software licenses.

[–]ItsKoffing 1 point2 points ago

Accounting, you should wonder on down to Texas if you're chemical or mechanical. Those interns bring in $31 an hour. There's a serious need for talent with boom we got going on because of the oil and gas discoveries.

[–]ItsKoffing 0 points1 point ago

Edit: the

[–]UndergroundMouse 0 points1 point ago

As a civil engineer that's more than what I'm getting full time.

[–]gerschgorin 1 point2 points ago

My engineering internship paid 25/hr + 2k signing bonus. I'm so glad I picked my major. Not to say when they told me that I didn't shit my pants.

[–]OptamusPriem 0 points1 point ago

as a stupid danish student, thats what i get paid to wash dishes.

true story

[–]robboywonder 0 points1 point ago

you studied danish?

[–]xScribbled 1 point2 points ago

$35/hr + free housing here. Like someone else said, go into Computer Science or Engineering and live in America (preferably Silicon Valley if CS is your thing). Also, be top of your class. Previous experience doesn't hurt either, I've had 4 internships now. My first was $10/hr, next was $11, then $21, now $35.

[–]wolfpackk 0 points1 point ago

I'm in MIS, i'm working my way toward a CS job role. I guess I understand, this is my first internship and all I do is maintain and do maintenance on solutions others create. Plus I live in Arkansas where the cost of living is extremely low.

[–]xScribbled 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, the cost of living here is insane, so that salary is probably equal or even better given housing costs. Full time here, I'd rent an apartment... for $2200 a month.

[–]wolfpackk 0 points1 point ago

Mine's 445 a month in a gated complex. Shit if I bought a house my payment would be like 400-500 a month depending on the size.

[–]Untitled_Username 1 point2 points ago

Law can pay quite well too. Last time I did an internship I got 2500€ per month.

[–]morto00x 1 point2 points ago

The most ridiculous internship I've seen was for Facebook. A friend was getting paid $50/hr to do software (Grad student from UC Berkeley though). That's more than what I make as a full-time EE.

[–]JessePinkmannBITCH 0 points1 point ago

Damn... I thought getting paid $15 an hour in marketing was real good.

[–]PokemonMasterMax 1 point2 points ago

I got a little over $10 for my 15 minute poops at my internship. Yay Engineering!

[–]marakolama 10 points11 points ago

what type of internship is it? I've been trying to land a paid internship and it's been like hunting a fucking unicorn.

[–]godzillary 15 points16 points ago

Go into computer science. Live in America.

[–]workingfisch 12 points13 points ago

Go into Finance. Live in America.

[–]apatheticEngineer 1 point2 points ago

What's the typical pay for finance internships?

[–]marakolama 2 points3 points ago

I'm in finance, in NYC. Not that easy.

[–]Bossnian 1 point2 points ago

You've gotta be top of your class and from a prestigious University to get a WELL paying anything from the get-go

[Unless you have a particular set of skills ;)]

[–]guyguy23 0 points1 point ago

I'm getting my CSC this year! YAY me! Baby steps :-D

[–]otakucode 0 points1 point ago

Ignore the people saying you have to be top of your class, etc, it's BS.

What you need is to be an asshole. An aggressive, calculating, mean-spirited, soulless asshole. Seriously, it will work.

[–]Mr__Blonde 1 point2 points ago

You are truly a fucking idiot. I'm working for an investment bank next year and I'm none of the above with the exception of aggressive. It takes an aggressive type of ambition to get into finance.

[–]otakucode -2 points-1 points ago

I didn't say you had to be that to be involved in the industry, I said you had to do that to get a high-paying internship without being from an Ivy League school.

[–]hoxieX -2 points-1 points ago

BB? Otherwise, gtfo.

[–]filox -2 points-1 points ago

Live in America.

As someone who's done a paid internship in Switzerland, I find your comment adorable.

[–]Kreystyle 1 point2 points ago

I live in Norway, all internships are paid.

[–]ralanis 2 points3 points ago

Have you tried IBM? I did it there and ended up getting a job offer.

[–]orzamil 6 points7 points ago

STEM internships generally pay money. If you're not STEM though, well. Good luck!

[–]ctindel 1 point2 points ago

True for most of life, not just internships.

[–]JackpotDen 0 points1 point ago

Walking ass backwards into relevant career jobs through being on reddit.

I fucking love being a programmer.

[–]ElevenReds 1 point2 points ago

Microsoft aswell offer paid internship, my friend has got one and as well as being paid he gets a load of free shit! latest nokia phone, latest laptop, free cafeteria food, they pay his transport

[–]StuGovGuy 2 points3 points ago

Wrong, Microsoft doesn't give free food.

[–]LAXNover 0 points1 point ago

Yeah everything else sounds close, although if he was an intern, I doubt he had the latest laptop. But there is definitely no food.

[–]morto00x 2 points3 points ago

Pretty much anything related to engineering and computer science

[–]jjplatypus[S] 1 point2 points ago

(Mechanical) Engineering and Geophysics. Remember it's REALLY important to tailor your resume to each job and talk to people face to face. When someone has the image of a happy, hard working person tied to the name on a resume, they stop looking at others.

[–]krl1327 0 points1 point ago

Live in America. Fed gov Pathways program.

[–]bballer2 4 points5 points ago

OP, know the feeling i just got a paid accounting internship!

[–]1wiseguy 5 points6 points ago

FYI, "paid" is the only kind of engineering internship. Last I heard, they were paying $16/hour.

Engineers kind of stare in confusion when somebody mentions an unpaid internship.

[–]BuzzsGirlfriendWoof 2 points3 points ago

Yep! Engineers have it good. Same reaction if you paid for your masters.

[–]1wiseguy 1 point2 points ago

I actually know engineers who paid for graduate school.

In engineering, there's always an easy way and a harder way to solve a problem. You try to choose the easy way, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

[–]Ethosia 2 points3 points ago

I can get a Masters paid for if I study Engineering?

*Any other majors have this same deal?

[–]LAXNover 1 point2 points ago

Most engineering companies will cover at least partially the expense for a masters for their employees.

[–]benisnotapalindrome 0 points1 point ago

How does that work though? In architecture, we're technically interns until we're licensed. Now there are the summer internships that are like what you normally think of when you hear internships (and they're paid), but since we legally can't be called 'architect' until licensed, entry level guys working their first jobs out of school are still 'architectural interns' even though its (hopefully) full time salaried with benefits etc. (I'm not...new economy plz?). Are engineering interns the same way?

[–]pantsareamyth 0 points1 point ago

No, most interns are students taking some time off of school to get job experience before graduation. If you're in a technical field, you can get paid well doing it, too.

[–]1wiseguy 0 points1 point ago

Most engineers aren't licensed, and it's not required to work as an engineer.

There is such a thing as a "professional engineer" license, but that is usually limited to engineers that design public structures and power systems.

A basic electrical engineer that designs computers or radios, for example, would probably not be licensed.

[–]DementiaDan 3 points4 points ago

That's what I did with my job!

[–]JackpotDen 0 points1 point ago

Is that a fucking bindle?

[–]apatheticEngineer 2 points3 points ago

A few of the larger/hot companies in Silicon Valley are paying computer science interns upwards of $40/hr plus benefits (free gourmet food, gym, hefty relocation bonuses, etc...).

[–]LAXNover 1 point2 points ago

Not just SV. Seattle + surrounding area is also a pretty good place to end up.

[–]apatheticEngineer 0 points1 point ago

Yup, Microsoft's up in Redmond; refresh my memory as to what other heavy hitters are up there?

[–]LAXNover 0 points1 point ago

Microsoft, Amazon, Nintendo of America, Valve, ArenaNet, Expedia, T-Mobile USA are some of the biggest. Other companies are opening offices in the area though to get some of the talent. Google and Facebook both have offices in the Seattle area

[–]genmusetic 2 points3 points ago

a boat is a hole in the water that you drop your money in

[–]Dunkshot32 -1 points0 points ago

I very much feel this way at the moment. It's a wonderful feeling.

[–]Schaftenheimen 1 point2 points ago

Why not two boats?

[–]S4M1CK 1 point2 points ago

I have two friends who are planning to go into investment banking. They both landed internships this summer where, get this, the average pay for an intern is £1000 a week for 10 weeks. I'm going into the wrong field :(

[–]A_Wild_Abra 0 points1 point ago

Gamegrumps. There, Someone said it.

[–]tacojohn48 0 points1 point ago

Last summer I did an internship with Capital One as a statistician that paid $1300 a week.

[–]Ent_angled 1 point2 points ago

We should buy a bar!

[–]Driesens 0 points1 point ago

Fuck boats. Buy a blimp.

[–]erichermit 1 point2 points ago

Buy all the videogames!

[–]losMarathons 0 points1 point ago

r/howifeel. I really wish people would start using this.

[–]taranasus 1 point2 points ago

This is how I feel today now that my UK work permit has been approved. To the boat store!

[–]onovanday 1 point2 points ago

i read your title as "How I feel landing a (well) paid intern..."

Needless to say, the pic was a disappointment.

[–]JakofBlades 1 point2 points ago

Game Grumps

[–]SpawnMoreMinerals 0 points1 point ago

[–]whitesammy 0 points1 point ago

[–]Elpants 0 points1 point ago

Never accept an unpaid internship.

Or as my professors say "Don't fuck your brother."

[–]teious 0 points1 point ago

Funny, here in Brazil we may not get paid as much but I don't think anyone would do a non paid internship. I've never even seen one.

[–]tsunamibird 0 points1 point ago

You deserve a boat.

[–]traprkeeprfutraS2000 2 points3 points ago

all internships in film production are unpaid. and those interns work 12+ hours a day. so, yea, you're a rich intern. you should buy a boat.

[–]tivo17 4 points5 points ago

It is kind of funny in the intern world. You either get paid nothing or you get paid a shit load of money (for an intern $20+/hr).

[–]wolfpackk 1 point2 points ago

I make $10/hour as an intern.

[–]lookiamapollo 1 point2 points ago

I made $14.83/hr as an intern.

[–]1637 0 points1 point ago

I'm the lowest paid full time salary developer in all of north america!

[–]lookiamapollo 0 points1 point ago

That sounds about right.

Mine was being an over glorified secretary. I organized files, and did random tasks around the office.

[–]CHEERS2U 0 points1 point ago

aka a bitchboy

[–]morto00x 3 points4 points ago

It's all about supply and demand. Also, internships are a way of training potential hires for half the price while getting shit done.

[–]PrimeIntellect -1 points0 points ago

Yeah but it's fun as hell and most of the people in film production are awesome.

[–]ilikeapples312 0 points1 point ago

i thought that too...but saving is cooler than a boat, along with a few things here and there of course
