I wish dressing like this was a normality still to this day.

Regardless, I want a beer now too.

[–]BeatlesForSale 37 points38 points ago

There was a rather dapper protest on Savile Row a few months ago. They were protesting the opening of an Abercrombie & Fitch.

[–]moparornocar 6 points7 points ago

Quite dapper indeed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Don dapper

[–]zombiepirate 22 points23 points ago

I just wish cool hats could be the norm again. Fedoras and bowlers are so much cooler than a baseball hat with the stickers still on. But I don't want to look like a pretentious hipster, so my desires are thwarted.

[–]PancakeMonkeypants 20 points21 points ago

I think the reason they look like pretentious hipsters is because their other clothes don't match a fedora. You need to be dressed well to look good in a fedora.

[–]zombiepirate 4 points5 points ago

Good point. Can't have one without the other, I guess.

[–]IWantSpaceships 1 point2 points ago

You also need a bit of groove

[–]l337Ninja 0 points1 point ago

I personally prefer it with the cane :P

[–]Amathev 6 points7 points ago

No one's stopping you. Let's get to it, we could get a new subculture going.

[–]SensibleMadness 9 points10 points ago

The problem is that now even a relatively crappy suit costs a few hundred bucks. Back then, there were suits made for a wide range of budgets, so the average joe could afford to dress like that all the time. It's more difficult to do these days, unless you're wealthy or dedicate a large portion of your income to your wardrobe.

[–]YadaYadaSex 3 points4 points ago

Just fly to Shanghai, cheap suits galore!

[–]iwsfutcmd 2 points3 points ago

Thrift shop! Then take it to a tailor - it'll look better than any new suit straight off the rack.

[–]nitesky 2 points3 points ago

A lot of what we think of as popular fashion only applied to the wealthy and upper middle class. Most of Americans were rural, or urban poor/lower middle class so ordinary men had just one suit, maybe two and wore them all the time so they weren't exactly ''fresh',' but in earlier times, this wouldn't have been a big deal.

[–]CobraStallone 0 points1 point ago

A nice coat and sweater can go nicely with a fedora.

[–]derpiato 0 points1 point ago

In the city I live in, there's an op shop where everthing is $2. You can buy a suit jacket and pants and a shirt for $6.

[–]BeatlesForSale 0 points1 point ago

There's already a subculture. "Chaps" http://www.thechapolympiad.com/

[–]PancakeMonkeypants 5 points6 points ago

You're in luck. 20s/30s fashion is definitely rising again. Look at the movies coming out and how famous people are dressing. The masses just do what they do now. The Great Gatsby is coming out next year and it's going to be huge I bet. Everyone read it in High School and Leonardo DiCaprio is very popular and has been doing some awesome stuff.

[–]torpidnotion 2 points3 points ago

So is a stock market collapse like in 1929, but I digress...

[–]soulofgranola 27 points28 points ago

Well they got what the wanted, and what happened? Most of those men are dead, now. That's what.

[–]finnlizzy 0 points1 point ago

I should bloody well hope so! No fun loving man should live to be 120!!!

[–]bowhunter6274 14 points15 points ago

I really hope these guys win!

[–]leparsdon 7 points8 points ago

"we want beer"

oh my how times have changed...but not really

[–]ccrepitation 29 points30 points ago

we want weed.

[–]ColdWeatherKarl 25 points26 points ago

We need to have a march like this. Classy attire only.

[–]stacks85 25 points26 points ago

instead you get Hempfest in Seattle. the least classy attire in the world.

[–]Theballscratcher 2 points3 points ago

Boston Hempfest = annual white trash congregation... But i'll still be there.

[–]NoConnections 5 points6 points ago

Like this?

[–]ColdWeatherKarl 1 point2 points ago

bang on

[–]kinghfb 0 points1 point ago

Nicely done.

[–]eja61387 1 point2 points ago

don't forget the flag.

[–]Graptoi 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. Alot of it, legal, and right now.

[–]dankdata 1 point2 points ago

I've been in a couple marijuana related protests in California and I really wanted to make a sign that said we want weed, like the pic, but was advised against it. Its like weed still has that stigma, and they prefer cannabis. (OC NORML)

For some reason my mind decided "prohibition" was the same as "suffrage" for a split second so I was really confused when I opened this link....

[–]Kvawrf -1 points0 points ago

Prohibition was the unfortunate byproduct of suffrage. Once women got the vote they decided they didn't want their husbands spending their paychecks on whiskey and beer. Democracy is a bitch sometimes.

[–]gmus 11 points12 points ago

The 18th amendment (prohibition) was ratified in January of 1919, the 19th Amendment (allowed women's suffrage) wasn't ratified until August of 1920. Women, despite not having the vote, did participate in and were in many ways the leaders of the temperance movement, but women's suffrage did not cause prohibition.

[–]nitesky 4 points5 points ago

I recently watched the documentary "Prohibition" the other day and they made the point that strong distilled liquor wasn't widely available to the lower classes until the 19th century. Before that, people drank a lot of weak beer which was fine because it was safe and tasty.

When they started drinking the hard stuff, a lot of people got smashed pretty regularly, depleting the family funds and causing domestic violence and all kinds of related problems. It was the wives and the children who suffered the most, being totally dependent on their man for literally everything

Culture takes a while to catch up with reality and it took a while for women to get together, form a movement and get legislation to outlaw liquor, which eventually turned out to be a godsend to the mobsters and other criminal elements (and nice people like Joseph Kennedy).

[–]Rekksu 1 point2 points ago

Those pushing for women's suffrage were often the same people as those pushing for prohibition, due to religious values. A lot of old progressive movements weren't like the irreligious ones you see today.

[–]BBQ_ur_booty 2 points3 points ago

I feel like doing that the next time my friends and I go out drinking.

[–]VoteJewbama 2 points3 points ago

Is this actually a historical photograph? I've seen it a couple of times and figured someone had Photoshopped the messages on the signs.

[–]miskatonic_dropout 3 points4 points ago

You can order prints of it online from multiple sources, and there are other photos from similar protests showing similar signs (Google 'we want beer photo'). Seems legit.

[–]joemarzen 0 points1 point ago

I read a lot of people were surprised to find out beer was included in prohibition. I am guessing these guys were like, come on, no beer? Really?

[–]moparornocar 0 points1 point ago

This is generally how me and my coworkers feel on a Friday with about two hours left to work.

[–]WithForte 0 points1 point ago

Jesus, I read that as anti-abortion march, and was completely dumbfounded as to why beer would have anything to do with it.

[–]Nezperdia 0 points1 point ago

What a brilliant and simplistic message, this could be implemented by marijuana liberalization activists with signs saying: We want pot!

[–]kenny10100 1 point2 points ago

My new Facebook cover photo

[–]majinalchemy 0 points1 point ago

1920's eh...I feel like this today.

[–]BdrLen 0 points1 point ago

Notice something about these guys marching? The ones on the right are all in step and all carrying their signs over their right shoulders. The ones on the left are somewhat in step and carrying flags instead of placards. Do they remind you of any other group of men from the 1918-1920 time frame?

[–]somerandomguy02 0 points1 point ago

I agree with their signs

[–]The3rdjj 0 points1 point ago

This is at every Wisconsin Badger game in Madison.

[–]ianmikyska 0 points1 point ago

Paradoxically, there are cries of "Prohibition!" where I'm from at the moment (the Czech Republic). Twenty people died from drinking deadly methanol (sold in bottles, supposedly in shops), so all alcohol above 20% has been banned. Not really the same thing, but it gives people something to be angry about...

[–]logitecharse 0 points1 point ago

What?

I can't see that one working for too long.

[–]HotbutteryToast 0 points1 point ago

If you're gonna do it, do it with class and style.

[–]zach84 0 points1 point ago

Now you're a man! A many many man!

[–]jonmatifa 0 points1 point ago

Mmmmmmm, beer... drools
