I never understood when people say "10 feet closer and we'd be dead!" as if they had never been up a ladder, or seen a tall building.

The ladder or building argument is actually quite worthless in this, because one could easily argue that the outer limits of the atmosphere are what would actually need to be further or closer, and everything inside can move about freely. The religious are grand masters at creating excuses to defend their insanity.
