      If it were donationware, there would be no implied expectation of payment. In the current model, if some huge corporation had deployed WinRAR on thousands of client machines without paying, and the owners of WinRAR found out, they could sue them for copyright violation damages. If it were donationware, that would not be an option, because there would be no implied expectation of payment. I'm sure in the license agreement you click through when installing WinRAR, you're basically agreeing that you would manually uninstall the program on your own after the trial expires (I haven't read it, to be honest).

      It's not worth it to go after the $30 from some individual home user, but you can bet it'd be worth it to go after a large company with thousands of violations.

      Plus, for WinRAR to be successful, it requires that people use RAR archive files. If the program ceased functioning after the 40 days, someone would not be able to open RAR files anymore, and the inconvenience would drive them away from the file format.

          Honestly, yeah. It's gotten me to pay for way more things. When I view the person at the other end of the tubes of the internet, if I think they are a person, I'm way more likely to give it to them.

          It works at a store too. When you have honestly friendly cashiers or salesmen, they do a way better job of selling you something.

                          I now assume that the true purpose of WinRAR, and the goal of its creator, is to just throw that expired message in your face every time you use it. Letting you buy it for life would defeat the purpose. It must come back.

                          I think that's their business model: let consumers use it for free, but charge corporations a subscription. Corporations get their software honestly and would never abuse their expiration system for fear of getting sued, but they can get people to like their product and build goodwill by having that system.
