Man... he would have loved the internet.

[–]Occupier_9000[S] 223 points224 points ago

The Internet was his idea more than a century ago. Something about cats and the Internet seem to go together...hmm...

Perhaps the Internet was created for the secret ulterior purpose of more efficiently conveying pictures of cats across the world.

Egypt had a popular obsession with cats. They had a cat god, cat sculptures and artwork, and even mummified them.

[–]Occupier_9000[S] 78 points79 points ago

I've read that the ancient Egyptians are thought to have constructed an optical communication network using bronze mirrors (or bonfires like the beacons in LoTR).

The conspiracy to spread pictures of cats could very well be the single driving force of human advancement towards the internet throughout the eons.

They also let them onto the table to eat food from their plates - though I guess that would seem less weird in a world without food created specifically for cats who then eat out of a bowl on/near the floor.

[–]msluxuryyacht 3 points4 points ago

cats let the empire grow, they provided needed pest control and cuddles.

[–]SpeedCola 5 points6 points ago

I never sat back and put this all together. The massive history of cats and humanity. Perhaps someone has made a chronological piece with highlights.

[–]palanoid 5 points6 points ago

Surprisingly many people had the idea even in more detail than Mark Twain. For example:

  1. 1934 by Paul Otlet. His vision of a great network of knowledge was centered on documents and included the notions of hyperlinks, search engines, remote access, and social networks—although these notions were described by different names.[9] In 1934, Otlet laid out this vision of the computer and internet in what he called “Radiated Library” vision.
  2. 1936: World brain, by H. G. Wells.
  3. 1937 World Congress of Universal Documentation. Paul Otlet, Henri La Fontaine and others.
  4. 1945: Vannevar Bush. Vannevar Bush published article in the Atlantic called As We May Think that describes memex system.

The founders of information science in the 30's had the idea of the Internet, hypertext Wikipedia and the Web already thought out in great detail. Only thing that lacked was technology to implement it.

[–]McShizzL 10 points11 points ago

Maybe the lack of internet is what gave him inspiration.

[–]Colonel_Poopcorn 8 points9 points ago

The man loved technology. He used to be a steamboat captain and had to navigate in either daytime or by the full moon, and he wrote about the invention of electric light and how it changed everything. Seriously the whole book is an awesome read.

Free too

"When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without fur." - Mark Twain

[–]spaceman_spiffy 4 points5 points ago

That was the first thing I thought. The second thing I thought was the kitten must have traveled back in time from the internetz. I dunno, like it's weird to see kittens in the 19th century or something.

[–]freaxeh 4 points5 points ago

he sounds like a really easy guy to get along with, much like the star trek depiction of him, it is no coincidence that i too like cats, maybe it is some sort of indicator of potential brilliance in humans? i never really get along well with dog lovers...

[–]Irish33 19 points20 points ago

As a dog and cat lover, I wonder why people can't just be more like me. Seriously, animals are cool as fuck and have all sorts of interesting and rewarding traits specific to each other. Get a dog and a cat!

[–]BoringSurprise 8 points9 points ago

Yes. Dogs are amazing creatures. Cats are amazing creatures. Very different from one another, but you really do not need to pick a team.

[–]SimbaLejonet 10 points11 points ago

I think you might be on to something here my fellow enjoyer of cats. My theory is that intelligent people tend to prefer intelligent animals.

Cats are clearly more intelligent than dogs - dogs follows your orders while cats just don't give a shit and carry on with their own agenda (which probably is more meaningful then most of ours...)

(Will I get flamed by dog people now?)

[–]Second_Foundationeer 15 points16 points ago

I love cats, but honestly, dogs can be intelligent too. I think I've some friends who have trained some dogs to not eat their own poo. Maybe.

[–]3dmonkeyarray 5 points6 points ago

Well, hate to break it to you BUT... dogs have a larger brains and, more importantly, larger frontal lobes than cats (relative to their size), probably because they are much more social animals and socialisation requires a lot of brain power. The frontal lobe is associated with intelligence because it's involved with executive functions. So dogs probably are more intelligent.

I think the reason cats appear more intelligent is because of their aloof behaviour, which is a common stereotype of highly intelligent humans. Whereas the dog's goofy, eager to please attitude is associated with lower intelligence in humans. So there's likely a bit of anthropomorphising going on there.

Both are adorable in their own ways.

[–]RedditHasBeenCoopted 11 points12 points ago

Cats are clean(they keep themselves clean). They're quiet. They don't need to be monitored. They can hold their own in a fight against just about any species. They don't eat everything in sight or until they vomit. They don't piss and shit everywhere. They are inquisitive, intelligent, agile (just physical intelligence, really), and really fucking cute.

They are companions, not slaves.

[–]ladylars 3 points4 points ago

I have a Border Collie. While my cat is intelligent, my dog is clearly more intelligent. I love them both, we all go on walks around the neighborhood together. Or, my cat runs behind my dog and me, meowling.

[–]ueptvoovtpeu 8 points9 points ago

You know, you may be on to something here. I can't think of anyone I know that truly and genuinely loves cats and isn't awesome.. and they also make the best girlfriends in my experience. They are the live and let live.. clingy at times but know when to back off and give you space.. holy shit.. I think we struck a vein of ore here. Hurry.. someone expand further upon this and keep going with it!

[–]SomeBug 2 points3 points ago

Wow... I am a total cat person and that is exactly what I look for in my girlfriends (and my current one is). If she is too demanding or clingy I can't take it. I do my thing and she does her thing and then we enjoy time together. I wonder if I was conditioned for this type of love by my pet cats as a child.

[–]Ceejae 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one that thinks the frequency of cats on Reddit is grossly over-exaggerated?

[–]notmaryrose 52 points53 points ago

I DID NOT KNOW LOVE UNTIL RIGHT NOW

[–]JuanJondre 94 points95 points ago

You know who also loved cats? Ernest Hemingway. A couple of months back, Harper's published a letter of his to a friend. I can't link it but I wrote it down just for this type of occassion:

"Miss Uncle Willie. Have had to shoot people but never anyone I knew and loved for eleven years. Nor anyone that purred with two broken legs." - Ernest Hemingway in a letter to a close friend describing the day he had to put his cat, Willie, down after a car accident.

[–]helloxcthulhu 16 points17 points ago

That made me tear up...

I couldn't imagine the pain of having to do that.

[–]SUPERSMILEYMAN 7 points8 points ago

I've had to bury two of my three-year-old cats in a single day. Then the next week I had to bury three new-born kittens that we had for about two and a half weeks. And about a month before that, we had to put down a cat I had for two years, and then I had to bury him, too.

After it was all said and done, I just gave the rest of my cats a long hug each.

I miss my kitties.

:(

[–]iloveunix 6 points7 points ago

My cat of 15 years died a month and a couple weeks ago :( I miss my kitty too

[–]SUPERSMILEYMAN 2 points3 points ago

I am not looking forward to the day when my two-oldest kitties die. I will be very sad, and so will my mom. She loves those kitties.

And just recently my best friend's 14 year-old beagle had to be put down. It was all so sad. He had to take his dog into the vet himself; his dad couldn't go with him and he is even a 20-year war vet.

[–]helloxcthulhu 3 points4 points ago

That's horrible. :(

I've only lost one cat and he ran away.

[–]SUPERSMILEYMAN 2 points3 points ago

Yeah it is, but there were so many strays where I live, you just picked the cutest one, wait for it to be weened from its mother, and hope it didn't get eaten by a possum.

But out of all the cats I still have, there are only two left that I've had for over ten years. The third one died a year ago last month; I was his favourite, too. :(

[–]VeryWrongImpression 2 points3 points ago

after a car accident

I cant' stress this enough, people. If you let your cat drive, you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]otterhugs 37 points38 points ago

I went to the Mark Twain museum in Missouri, it was awesome, and the little article about all his cats was the best part. =)

Sharkbait OOH AH AH!

[–]cynical_dog 12 points13 points ago

I urged that kings were dangerous. He said, then have cats. He was sure that a royal family of cats would answer every purpose. They would be as useful as any other royal family, they would know as much, they would have the same virtues and the same treacheries, the same disposition to get up shindies with other royal cats, they would be laughably vain and absurd and never know it, they would be wholly inexpensive, finally, they would have as sound a divine right as any other royal house. ... The worship of royalty being founded in unreason, these graceful and harmless cats would easily become as sacred as any other royalties, and indeed more so, because it would presently be noticed that they hanged nobody, beheaded nobody, imprisoned nobody, inflicted no cruelties or injustices of any sort, and so must be worthy of a deeper love and reverence than the customary human king, and would certainly get it.

By what right has the dog come to be regarded as a "noble" animal? The more brutal and cruel and unjust you are to him the more your fawning and adoring slave he becomes; whereas, if you shamefully misuse a cat once she will always maintain a dignified reserve toward you afterward--you will never get her full confidence again. - Mark Twain, a Biography

"Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured."

It really helps. I love Mark Twain's writing.

man i bought the autobiography when it came out cause i thought it would have all kinds of crazy shit in it cause he wouldnt let anyone read it til he'd been dead a hundred years. i was like damn, was he gay? atheist? smoked weed? what the fuck is this dude keeping secret for a hundred years after hes dead? fucking aliens? what the fuck kind of crazy shit was this dude into?

turns out, he just wanted to talk shit about his publishers cause they gave grant a raw deal and he didnt want it to fuck with his royalties til his shit was in the public domain.

Actually it's simple. You know when, back in the days, early 20th century, pink was the colour for boys (because red was bloody and thusly, masculine) and baby blue for girls? Morals change, if you're a guy nowadays and you'd be walking around with a cat, you will look like a crazy cat guy (like Sheldon after the break-up with his non-girlfriend). You're a bloke, man the f up and get a dog. (Or even better, get no pet at all, they're too many pets on this world as it is. Get the money you would spend on a dog or cat and give it to someone who actually needs it)
