Popular Science

[–]Second_Foundationeer 59 points60 points ago

Popular engineering.

[–]Lj27 12 points13 points ago

There's no use. We're just doomed to play second fiddle to our younger cousin science indefinitely.

[–]JuniorProblems 2 points3 points ago

This took me way to long to figure out.

[–]HeadbangsToMahler 286 points287 points ago

THANK YOU.

If Mythbusters included any consideration of statistical significance, none of their experimentation would hold up to actual scrutiny. I would LOVE at least a small disclaimer at the end stating that the findings are mostly anecdotal.

With that said, they are still doing a huge service to learning and the sciences, promoting experimentation and a Socratic mindset in a popular way.

[–]St-Moustache 43 points44 points ago

Relevant XKCD: http://xkcd.com/397/ (featuring zombie Feynman)

I think Mythbusters is similar to the Daily Show in that it gets people interested in subjects they normally wouldn't be interested in but you have to know ahead of time not to take everything at face value and pick apart the entertainment and the 'education'.

[–]LucarioPrime 3 points4 points ago

While I do not disagree with you there, I think the Daily Show has a little more merit, especially when John doesn't joke around as much. He is a pretty good foundation for learning about politics rather than a sole source that can garner you full comprehension of politics. Mythbusters is just interesting, it's not really a good enough platform to discuss science.

[–]gamelizard 3 points4 points ago

it does how ever do an incredibly important job of bringing science to the mainstream

[–]LucarioPrime 2 points3 points ago

No doubt, it does.

[–]alis96 111 points112 points ago

Apparently they do a lot more trials than are presented in the show. Don't have a source, just what I've heard.

[–]hohohomer 79 points80 points ago

I recall that being brought up in an interview with I think Adam once. As well, they do a lot of other stuff that simply isn't on camera that is relevant to the experiment.

[–]Mastadge 37 points38 points ago

It's because they only have 45 minutes to show it all, so they have to cut a lot of it out. If they tried to fit everything in, you wouldn't really get to see their personalities, just lots of tests, and it wouldn't be fun to watch

[–]captain_zavec 31 points32 points ago

And if it's not fun to watch, nobody watches it, and the goal of bringing science to the masses is lost.

[–]muntoo 9 points10 points ago

3 HOUR LONG EPISODES!

[–]Kriicz 14 points15 points ago

If you check their AMA, some myths took weeks, but lasted one episode.

[–]AnorexicBuddha 8 points9 points ago

They had an AMA?!

[–]meeeeoooowy 5 points6 points ago

They cut a lot out and replay every little thing like 50 times.

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point ago

It's not even that. Jamie and Adam are design engineers, not scientists. They are very good design engineers, too. Failure is just part of the process of invention. I don't think they are misleading anyone, only trying to entertain with their inventive experimental set-ups.

[–]DetEndeloseSvart 5 points6 points ago

I volunteered at the taping of a Mythbusters episode. Myself and the other volunteers were there for two days. I joked that it would probably be edited down to five minutes of actual aired footage.

Probably not far from the truth, but I haven't seen the results yet.

[–]zak212 13 points14 points ago

So just to be clear. The evidence you present with which to dispute the general opinion that Mythbusters presents anecdotal evidence, is completely anecdotal?

Well at least you admitted it.

Or did I just miss the joke?

[–]alis96 3 points4 points ago

I'm so meta it makes my own head hurt.

[–]SrsSteel 45 points46 points ago

Yup there is actual science and math behind the scenes

[–]bitch_im_a_lion 38 points39 points ago

Yep. But honestly who wants to watch thirty minutes of adam adding all of the numbers up? They edit it to show all the good parts with just a little bit of science/math thrown in so we know how they got their results.

[–]HankSpank 40 points41 points ago

... I would.

[–]dirice87 27 points28 points ago

Honestly, I would too. If they released spreadsheets of raw data On their website i would love to play around with it

[–]HankSpank 32 points33 points ago

That would get me so hard.

[–]DeathToPennies 16 points17 points ago

Is it at freezing point in here? Because I think I just got...

[–]AetherIsWaiting 2 points3 points ago

[–]serdertroops 8 points9 points ago

sadly, you (like me) fall in the minority. What makes their show so successfull are the fun part of the experiment.

[–]foxkev 14 points15 points ago

And Kari Byron, don't forget Kari Byron...

[–]iceburgh29 9 points10 points ago

Also boobs.

[–]RavarSC 9 points10 points ago

That's what he said

[–]anusface 3 points4 points ago

At least it's showing kids that there is a fun part to experiments. Their mental image of an experiment is of cool mythbusters blowing things up instead of some guy working out a spreadsheet.

[–]HuckleberrySam 3 points4 points ago

and much better for you than junk reality. Who needs to watch a bunch of strangers living in an expensive house together, fake people trying to fake marry each other, or hungry and starving contestants stabbing each other on a remote island

[–]Sagerian 2 points3 points ago

The earlier episodes did a better job of displaying this.

[–]LynkDead 4 points5 points ago

That's pretty irrelevant if they don't show it on the show or at least make a disclaimer about it.

EDIT: I should have said "That's pretty irrelevant if they don't share the data or even talk about the existence of additional data on the show."

[–]fractalife 5 points6 points ago

Or, you know, make their findings available to the public so qualified people can scrutinize it.

[–]castleclouds 0 points1 point ago

They only have 10 days for each episode so they have to condense lots of stuff

[–]soundeng 7 points8 points ago

Well said, but I like to just think about it like this: If those two goofy special effects geeks can prove a myth, it's gotta be true. But if they bust a myth it's a whole lot less straight forward.

[–]Aktikus 4 points5 points ago

Could you explain what you mean with a "socratic mindset"? I'm curious...

[–]ilmrynorlion 12 points13 points ago

Socrates is famous for the method by which he engaged in philosophical investigation. Put simply he would dismantle the ideas of others by asking pointed and pertinent questions that would eventually show that their ideas and preconceptions were faulty. In context /u/HeadbangsToMahler probably means that Mythbusters promotes a mindset that emphasizes questioning claims that are generally accepted or promoted as true, thereby doing away with those that turn out to be false.

[–]Tulki 6 points7 points ago

I thought the hosts of Mythbusters were special effects experts, not expert scientists? That's why for some shows they're advised by other experts, like people from Nasa or (more often) demolitionists.

[–]andersonmatt1125 4 points5 points ago

By profession they're special effects experts, but it's not like you can get a bachelors degree in Scientist. They're really skilled, think things though, and probably have lots of help. That's good enough for me to consider them scientists.

[–]godin_sdxt 2 points3 points ago

Well, anecdotes are excellent at disproval a universal claim. So at least some of their experiments hold up to scrutiny.

[–]Yossarian33 0 points1 point ago

Yup, remember the helium football episode? They took the distance data to some academic who probably ran a quick T-test on excel and based on it, said there was no difference, even though the means were "different" to the layman.

[–]NotSoSlenderMan 0 points1 point ago

So, dumb person here, can you explain your reasoning behind this? I would think that given the premise of the show to prove or disprove widely believed "myths" that as long as whatever they do disproves the myth, it would be considered true. Not to say that's the case for everything they do because often they are trying to prove rather than disprove.

[–]breakwater 0 points1 point ago

The phrase I've always preferred is Phenomenology. There is a scientific element, but really, it's about watching things do neat stuff. The mechanics matter, but it is a subsidiary benefit of getting to see something explode, burn or turn your poop blue.

[–]agoodz 0 points1 point ago

Mythbusters is not science, it's explosion porn. I think they originally inspired learning but not any more.

[–]theroarer 16 points17 points ago

[–]coldfrontin 4 points5 points ago

i think it's great what adam and jamie do to make basic science accessible for lay people, and i can appreciate what they have been able to learn without extensive formal training.

[–]merton1111 2 points3 points ago

Not science. Engineering.

[–]keister 2 points3 points ago

These guys are just one step below media figures like Michio Kaku.

Hopefully they do have a significant contribution to science by sparking interest in science for children that watch their shows. Adults that watch their shows and have no idea who the likes of Edward Witten is, are complete morons if they pretend to 'like' science.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]FOR_SClENCE 0 points1 point ago

They still serve a purpose, which is to disseminate interest in science among the general population. Without them, a lot more people would view science as something mundane.

Which, seeing as everyone is made of the disemboweled remains of two stars, totally isn't true.

[–]CommentsPwnPosts 0 points1 point ago

True, but you know what they say:

popular science is a gateway science.

[–]hippiechan 0 points1 point ago

[–]timeticker 15 points16 points ago

Bill Nye is a is an American science educator, television host, mechanical engineer and scientist. He is best known as the host of the Disney/PBS children's science show Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993–1998) and for his many subsequent appearances in popular media as a science educator.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are television hosts, engineers, and former special effects designers who star in the popular TV show Mythbusters where they research and perform experiments to test various pop-culture myths.

Why would you say there is no science in the picture?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

Mythbusters is widely regarded as being unscientific because of their questionable methods, the amount of trials they actually do, and the fact that they do not release their data to be subject to peer review.

Bill Nye, while a great TV host and reputable science educator, hasn't done a lot of real research in his lifetime. Certainly not enough for anyone to consider him the "face of science".

[–]provokedcarp 10 points11 points ago

being the face of science doesn't mean the same thing as being the best scientist. It simply means that when people think of science, a lot of people in this country think of Bill Nye.

[–]wittlepup 9 points10 points ago

Science, at its core, is forming a hypothesis and testing it. And he is a face of science because of his celebrity status and his impact on millions of Americans.

[–]MasterOfHavoc 0 points1 point ago

Among the rest of the scientific method... Gathering data, overvatiom, etc.

[–]SitnaltaPhix 4 points5 points ago

..they do not release their data to be subject to peer review.

They broadcast it on motherfucking television.

[–]dopefreshness 1 point2 points ago

Because the science sucks... at least for the mythbusters. Bill Nye taught me how a crt monitor works. Can't hate on that.

But for the Mythbusters crew. I respect their ability to build, but their lack of understanding physics and chemistry skews their results. Just cause they don't understand why they failed, they say it can't be done.

I have to say though. Two of those people really partake in a bastardized version of the scientific process. Mythbusters is entertaining but their methods and total lack of isolating variables is maddening at times.
