Settle down, Reddit, settle down...

THIS explains things.

EDIT: If you still don't get it: It was a TV reenactment. In reality the rescuer was the one who got killed when trying to wrestle the snake off of the poor girls body.

[–]Msheno 72 points73 points ago

THE RESCUER GETS KILLED?

[–]xLuMisx 22 points23 points ago

Apparently so. Unless, well. They lied?

[–]Kalmah666 3 points4 points ago

In that case... maybe the guy with the camera was the one with enough brains to keep filming and stay the fuck away

[–]e7t 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the camera man is so smart and great, fuck the kid getting crushed, stay back and take pictures! /s you douche.

[–]Kalmah666 0 points1 point ago

In the dramatization the rescuer gets killed... Im sorry but, if I knew that, and was the cameraman... I would stay the fuck back from any future "Save this kid from the giant snake" situations in real life and keep filming

Natural selection at work, stupid kid got too close to the snake, I'm not going to add myself to the list for a dumb kid.

[–]acog 5 points6 points ago

To be more accurate, the rescuer in the real incident apparently was killed. The guy in the photo didn't get killed because it was a reenactment.

[–]mdw1715 6 points7 points ago

no it says it was a dramatization...

[–]Roboticide 18 points19 points ago

Of an actual event where the rescuer got killed...

[–]dreadredheadzedsdead 4 points5 points ago

um, read the title of the site.

[–]Magicmudkip 21 points22 points ago

Waffles at noon?

[–]saberhawk 23 points24 points ago

[–]youknowit19 5 points6 points ago

I'm with you. I fail to see how the title of the site is relevant to the previous statement.

[–]coaxfun 6 points7 points ago

Lord, read the link after you click it too. It's a reenactment of what happened to a guy that tried to help get a snake off of a guy. Nat Geo was shopped in.

[–]Jorgemeister 0 points1 point ago

do want

[–]Slantedinnuendo 1 point2 points ago

SPOILER ALERT.

[–]mainsworth 1 point2 points ago

Discovery Channel doesn't care about white people.

[–]RuchW 0 points1 point ago

Cmon dude, SPOILER SPOILER! Hadn't resd the article but saw your comment. :(

[–]suedebluesshoes 9 points10 points ago

Oh, right. It's a girl.

[–]TractorBeamTuesdays 6 points7 points ago

There goes all the WTF right out the window.

[–]adrian5b 5 points6 points ago

THAT DUDE'S A GIRL?!

[–]Eagle20Fox2 6 points7 points ago

Finkel is Einhorn??

[–]zaxerone 1 point2 points ago

Einhorn is Finkel!

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

I hate when that happens.

[–]SafeLink 0 points1 point ago

DON'T WORRY REDDIT, IT'S SAFE!

[–]Owlettt 0 points1 point ago

Obama pic in the advert below the story says, "everybody calm the fuck dow. The girl is fine."

[–]mrskeetskeeter 0 points1 point ago

That's a girl?!

[–]gssquared214 525 points526 points ago

Um, how do you think that picture was taken?

[–]AlextheGerman 310 points311 points ago

OP is seriously retarded...

[–]freeaccount 98 points99 points ago

Nuh uh, how would you guys know that there was a camera man right there if he didn't circle it?

[–]AlextheGerman 44 points45 points ago

Yeah, the red "circle" made me wonder too, how the fuck could someone miss the fucking camera man, HE'S RIGHT THERE NO NEED TO CIRCLE IT.

[–]Jorgemeister 56 points57 points ago

the red circle? fuck I was checking on the damn yellow square.

[–]MrTravesty 8 points9 points ago

If only Dora the explorer were there.

[–]theimpolitegentleman 1 point2 points ago

I laughed too hard.

Gave a Mitch Hedberg vibe, funny shit bro

[–]AskYouEverything 14 points15 points ago

I actually didn't notice the camera or the circle until you guys pointed it out...

[–]testerpot 16 points17 points ago

There's a picture??. OP should have circled the whole thing in red..I just kept staring at my keyboard

[–]muddylemon 4 points5 points ago

That explains why you have all these questions

[–]hoosiers26 3 points4 points ago

It was still a funny picture, jeez...

[–]B0SSARU 1 point2 points ago

THEN WHO WAS CAMERA!?!?!?!ONE111?!

[–]roguewave -1 points0 points ago

See my comment above.

[–]roguewave 9 points10 points ago

It seems even more stupid that you assume the op and everyone else forgot that. The joke is that there are two photographers not giving a shit, not just the circled one. There isn't really a way to circle the photographer of the picture we're looking at.

[–]Rather_Dashing 2 points3 points ago

Neither needed to be circled, we are not blind.

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

I assure you some people on Reddit are, in fact, blind ;)

I do agree though.

[–]cognitive_science 12 points13 points ago

I think you're missing the point of the post.

[–]HothMonster 11 points12 points ago

That it's easy to rile people up with a photo taken out of context?

[–]e7t 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah this photo can really be taken out of context, I mean there can be so much more going on than the snake attacking the boy while someone takes a picture... Oh no, wait, that's EXACTLY what's happening.

[–]WaffleSports 11 points12 points ago

Black kid stole some ones snake?

[–]thecrimsontim 1 point2 points ago

Nigga stole my snake!

[–]ZofSpade 0 points1 point ago

The point is overwrought by the red circle.

[–]Bubba-Booey 1 point2 points ago

Or any picture of any horrible thing for that matter.

[–]enki1337 0 points1 point ago

My assumption would be that he used a tripod and set it to a 10s delay. It's pretty hard to get into that position with anything shorter. Incidentally, that videographer is a dick.

[–]PulsarMan85 87 points88 points ago

"Stop screaming, you might scare him away"

[–]schoogy 7 points8 points ago

Reminds me of the Kinison bit. Guys photographing the malnourished in Africa. . . "Don't feed him yet, he's gotta look hungry!".

[–]them002 15 points16 points ago

To be fair, photojournalists are ordered to not interact with virtually anything they're photographing in the field. On an ethical note, it doesn't seem right and actually haunted Kevin Carter until he killed himself in 94...

[–]dancon25 3 points4 points ago

Oh yeah, the Pulitzer-Prize winning photo of a starving child being stalked by a vulture. Also known as "Delial" from House of Leaves. great book.

[–]LyingPylon 3 points4 points ago

Great. Now I got to go reread that book AGAIN

[–]oldmanwithahatchet 0 points1 point ago

Arg.

[–]xORioN63 1 point2 points ago

And there's those guys that gave alchool to penguins, to make them more active.

/r/WTF seems like a reliable repost sub-reddit. Considering the statistics.

[–]heybrandon 33 points34 points ago

If I recall, someone pointed out that this was just a reenactment.

[–]79gt 109 points110 points ago

"You can't get involved with the wild just let nature take it's course."

Camera man theory.

[–]IrishPub 59 points60 points ago

The Prime Directive.

[–]WileEPeyote 10 points11 points ago

Which they broke every 5th episode.

[–]IrishPub 2 points3 points ago

Depends on the series.

[–]Roboticide 1 point2 points ago

Well, in Enterprise there was no Prime Directive to break.

In The Next Generation though, about every 5th episode.

[–]IrishPub 0 points1 point ago

I stopped watching Enterprise after the third episode, and The Next Generation doesn't break the Prime Directive every 5th episode. It does break it, just not that often.

[–]Roboticide 1 point2 points ago

That's because sarcasm, my dear Irishman.

[–]IrishPub 0 points1 point ago

Oh...hahaha. Well okay then.

[–]Tashre 0 points1 point ago

Voyager did "okay" in regards to it, though they had the advantage of exploration being a secondary objective.

The Omega Directive was pretty awesome, though.

[–]Avalon81204 27 points28 points ago

I think people forget that humans are part of nature also.

[–]silent_p 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, but other animals defend each other all the time. If other people attacked the snake to try to get it off of the boy, that would be a perfectly natural response.

[–]79gt 13 points14 points ago

But, other animals don't carry video cameras. If they did they would become neutral automatically.

[–]Avalon81204 0 points1 point ago

Not if it was one of their own being attacked.

[–]Avalon81204 0 points1 point ago

Exactly my point. People say "oh they cant interfere with nature." but they forget humans are part of nature.

[–]Blue_Falcon 15 points16 points ago

[–]redditsuxdicks 3 points4 points ago

Five bucks? Fuck I'll do it for tree-fiddy.

[–]jingks 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that the tail wrapped around the kid? Looks like the head is safely secured outside the frame.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

More like you can't just set a camera like that down in the dirt.

[–]RelevantToMyInterest 11 points12 points ago

perhaps a relevant article

he's the guy who took this picture

[–]Ram27 1 point2 points ago

Carter's daughter Megan responded to such comparisons with, "I see my dad as the suffering child. And the rest of the world is the vulture."

Heh. Take that, bitches.

[–]handle8 78 points79 points ago

rule # 1: do not interfere with the animals

[–]fallingstarr123 -1 points0 points ago

that's not true. just ask steve irwin. i'm sure he'll chime in and agree with me ANY minute.

[–]BassFacedOne 5 points6 points ago

How does this get so many upvotes? This is a repost, not to menton, I've seen it on like 3 other sites. Not trying to be a hater but when ever I've posted something that was a repost, I've gotten reddit-raped for it, and gotten no upvotes. Reddit is no fair!

[–]Hebegster 2 points3 points ago

Totally agree. I just saw this on here last week. Only about three out of every ten posts are something I haven't seen on here before. It's sad really.

[–]crustyandhercomputer 1 point2 points ago

A lot of people haven't seen it before and thought it was neat.. I haven't. I don't catch everything that hits the front page of this subreddit.

[–]Psycrotes 6 points7 points ago

Observe and report!

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 9 points10 points ago

FOR FUCKS SAKE PEOPLE.

RESEARCH BEFORE YOU THROW A FIT.

---THE PICTURE IS FAKE--- The girl is in no danger, it is a re-enactment for the movie. There is no danger here. There is no danger here. One more time, there is no danger here.

[–]gottaloveJesus 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I don't get why people are freaking out about it. If the python wanted to eat her, it would not have wrapped only its tail just around her leg. It would bring its whole body to bear around her torso.

[–]Melodicon 9 points10 points ago

I mean, what's he going to do?

[–]BannedFromEarth 2 points3 points ago

Film it ofcourse!

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 1 point2 points ago

Go get help? Hit the head of the snake with a rock? Stab it a bunch in the eye with something? Drag them to the water and feed them both to an alligator and hope the kid gets away? Masturbate? There's got to be something he could do to help that kid.

[–]commiewizard 1 point2 points ago

Buy a pair Sketchers. I think they give free shoes that could be used for that young man's feet.

[–]Sonicpanda[!] 1 point2 points ago

[–]Melodicon 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit wat

[–]croagunk 0 points1 point ago

He's not even 3/5 of a person yet.

[–]SeanDougherty86 40 points41 points ago

lol... so we know that there are at least 2 camera men that give zero fucks

"you see the python start to constrict this young boy"

"if no-one hears his screams and comes to help, his legs will surely be broken"

"there is someone in the distance, hopefully they get here in time to help him"

CRACK

"the child's leg is broken, and the bystander that is coming to help wont be here for another minute"

"Jamaal seems to be in quite the bind"

[–]ccm8729 23 points24 points ago

It's fake. Dramatization for a movie

[–]fakelife2 1 point2 points ago

Help finally shows up and the camera men scream not to help him just yet. Wait till we get just a few more good shots. "Don't let his scream's bother you..he actually likes it"

[–]danhauk 3 points4 points ago

His scream's what?

Sorry, I've always wanted to do that.

[–]teh_tg 2 points3 points ago

This is fake, scroll up and see burnso's post.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

Clearly they used to work for Geraldo.

[–]Wordwright 9 points10 points ago

I've always found it weird that TV channels like NatGeo will both produce shows about people like wildlife vets who bust their asses treating elephants with hemorroids and whatnot, and purely objective nature shows where cameramen will just watch as animals die in agony.

[–]BearDown1983 47 points48 points ago

There was a very moving scene on the Planet Earth DVDs where the crew gets interviewed about a wounded seal that took shelter near their boat to escape a killer whale. I guess it was emotionally scarring for the crew, because while they wanted to help the seal, they also wanted to respect the killer whale.

To quote Trigun: You can't save both spiders and butterflies.

There was another from the Planet Earth DVDs talking about how taxing it was to watch a pack of Komodo dragons kill a water buffalo over the course of a couple of weeks - because you really end up bonding to the things you're filming.

[–]9212 21 points22 points ago

over the course of a couple of weeks

Harsh.

[–]cantCme 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, if I remember correctly they bite the prey (venom (?)) and then just follow the prey while it slowly dies.

[–]GManny 17 points18 points ago

Not Venom, Saliva. Their saliva has so much bacteria in it that it is literally deadly if you are bitten. :D

[–]tyr02 16 points17 points ago

While true, there is also venom present. They have two glands in the lower jaw that secrete a toxic protein. Though the purpose and nature of these are still under debate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komodo_dragon#Saliva

[–]OAMP 0 points1 point ago

Like, still under debate because the prey dies too fast by the saliva to figure out it's use or is it something trivial that can be used for multiple things and is therefore undecided?

[–]tyr02 1 point2 points ago

Not many studies done yet on it, from what I can tell.

[–]Shagoosty 2 points3 points ago

Mostly true, but it was recently discovered that they also have venom.

[–]GManny 1 point2 points ago

Well I guess I learned something new! And knowing is half the battle :)

[–]occupythekitchen 1 point2 points ago

great attitude to have, glad to see I'm not the only one who would prefer to be wrong and learn something new than to always be right.

[–]9212 2 points3 points ago

In the oddest way, I'm glad you posted details. I was imagining a 'Death by a thousand nibbles' scenario. This seems a bit nicer.

[–]SporkOfThor 1 point2 points ago

That's how I imagine a pack of Pekingese take down a yak on the Mongolian Steppes: a thousand annoying nips over weeks until the yak gives up on life.

[–]9212 2 points3 points ago

I can easily imagine smaller animals severing a tendon so that prey can no longer walk, which would turn it into an inevitable end due to thirst.

But what are horrid and slightly humiliating way to go.

[–]Myceilingisbuzzing 0 points1 point ago

people.

[–]9212 0 points1 point ago

I'm guessing you're replying to a different thread.

[–]Spam4119 8 points9 points ago

There was another scene, I don't remember if it was Planet Earth or Life (I think Planet Earth) where a baby penguin fell down a crack in the ice and couldn't get out. And the parents were trying to get it out but just couldn't. So the camera crew were like "You know what, we just sat out here as these birds starved themselves for like 2 months, in negative 50 degree weather with hurricane force winds... we aren't going to just let their baby die like that" so they went out and pulled the penguin out.

[–]homeless_man_jogging -1 points0 points ago

Well yeah, why wouldn't they? There's nothing really to consider there.

[–]ibtbwb 1 point2 points ago

Upvote because I understand this AND the Trigun quote. I just absolutely adore Vash <3

But yeah, it would be really tough to just stand there and watch...

[–]Acid_Override 0 points1 point ago

Currently watching Trigun on netflix 11 episodes in. Just a strange coincidence.

[–]southernasshole 3 points4 points ago

wildlife vets who bust their asses treating elephants with hemorroids and whatnot

They're trying to preserve species which are usually endangered.

Elephants fall into this category, if an animal dies because of other animals, well that's just how it works, we have little business interfering, but most of the suffering species like elephants suffer is because of negative human intervention, hunting, and deforestation.

[–]v0-z 1 point2 points ago

What I don't get are shows like Intervention, when the camera man is just filming a human being destroy themselves, when the show is about wanting to stop them from doing it, BUT before "lets get a few good shots" I'll never get it, especially the "I feel like I'm walking on sunshine" girl

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

It's because they are in the process of getting them to decide to get help for themselves. You absolutely cannot just force a person to not harm themselves. Do you understand how an intervention works?

[–]DNAsly 5 points6 points ago

The kids not in any real danger. All it takes is an adult to unravel that. The kid could probably do it himself too.

Also, a little alcohol into their eye/mouth area and those punks will unravel in a second.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 35 points36 points ago

I really want to be somewhere where this happens to me and while everyone else is freaking out, calmly take a shot and spit it into the snake's face. Then say something clever. Probably, 'Stay thirst, my friend.'

[–]Istvaan 4 points5 points ago

You almost had it.

[–]KimJongIlSunglasses 2 points3 points ago

I don't always drink 40s, but when I do it's King Cobra.

[–]SQUID_FUCKER 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I couldn't come up with a clever one. The best I had was:
I don't always get cozy with snakes. But when I do, we both get a little drunk.

[–]Sonicpanda[!] -1 points0 points ago

I have more pictures somewhere, it's actually pretty fucked up. One of the film crew goes and gets it off the kid but then it wraps around the dude and kills him.

Found them.

[–]yumcax 0 points1 point ago

It's not real, man... I hope it didn't upset you to much.

[–]Sonicpanda[!] 0 points1 point ago

I know, I pulled them off that website saying that it was fake. I just wanted to be a jerk :P

[–]yumcax 0 points1 point ago

Heh. I'll delete my comment in a few minutes :D

[–]rodgerjm 2 points3 points ago

[–]Shagoosty 0 points1 point ago

There's an effect that happens when you're looking through the lens while filming a documentary. Everything seems surreal and fake. You don't think you are in any danger, and the people who you observe are just characters. It's a strange psychological effect.

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

I don't think there's anything strange about it. You're filming what you're used to seeing through someone else's footage while safe and comfortable, at home.

[–]nastshabast 2 points3 points ago

A good journalist would intervene, a great journalist keeps rolling.

[–]PhukinMonkey 2 points3 points ago

Eh its Africa. I'm sure getting eaten by snake is far better than some explosive butt disease

[–]FlamingJellyfish 5 points6 points ago

The camera men didn't get enough facebook likes on the national geographic page, so they can't help the kid.

[–]SeanDougherty86 2 points3 points ago

He appears to be in quite the bind

[–]cebot 0 points1 point ago

I am sad I can upvote this only once

[–]Sambeaux 1 point2 points ago

It's a repost sooo...

[–]majorcusack 0 points1 point ago

Could you at least get the original photo before you repost?

[–]Me_hav_ADD 0 points1 point ago

Gary! Your in my shot!

[–]dclowd9901 -1 points0 points ago

I don't know why they needed to highlight the videographer; it's not like it wasn't implied that a picture was being taken by a disaffected bystander by virtue of the picture existing.

[–]roguewave -1 points0 points ago

Instead of one disaffected bystander we now know of two. They maybe would have also circled the other photographer, if it was physically possible.

[–]StockAlex -1 points0 points ago

Brazzers?

[–]Secrete_Persona 1 point2 points ago

you see the size of the black dudes python?

[–]AvroChris 1 point2 points ago

Hey, you don't interfere with the course of nature.

[–]Jedimo 0 points1 point ago

woot, I just saved myself a quarter!

[–]darkmafia069 1 point2 points ago

So did this snake kill anyone? I can't decipher all this shit

[–]CndConnection 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck was he killed?

Like as if they fucking go out in the field with huge ass camera equipment and none of them think of bringing a fucking machete.

For fuck sakes all it would take is one good chop.

[–]Coridimus 1 point2 points ago

I can't decide if you are advocating "one good chop" to the snake or to the kid. :S

[–]CndConnection -1 points0 points ago

The snake durrrr!

[–]this_is_a_recording0 -2 points-1 points ago

Fuck those guys for real

I hope they're dead

[–]taylus 1 point2 points ago

Aww, he's giving him a hug!

[–]viciousmedic 0 points1 point ago

Smile kid. Your a star now.

[–]pibroch 0 points1 point ago

Did he died?

[–]maharito 0 points1 point ago

Good to see we're following the Prime Directive.

[–]SwinginCrabWhacka 0 points1 point ago

sigh THIS again?

[–]Cifra00 0 points1 point ago

I come to reddit to avoid pictures like this that keep popping up on my Facebook feed...

[–]wardjm136 0 points1 point ago

Ohhh...it's a snake! I simply assumed it was his penis...

[–]kakksakka 0 points1 point ago

One must not interfere with nature while documenting it !

[–]KaizerDnitz 0 points1 point ago

Their motto is "Never interfere with nature."

[–]philge 1 point2 points ago

It's an African Rock Python (Python sebae). Largest species of python in Africa, and known for being rather aggressive. I saw one for sale at a reptile show once that was in a 50g tank with bungee cords all over it. It was about 5 feet and there was a sign on the tank that read: "$75 if you bag it. $100 if I bag it." Must have been a bad motherfucking snake!

[–]bbaydar 1 point2 points ago

They are cranky sons of bitches in general. Some of the worst snakes I've ever handled.

[–]Gurager 0 points1 point ago

kinda like this guy that won a Pulitzer prize for taking a pic. of a African child running from a vulture. Sadly the photographer didn't help the kid an sadly the photographer committed suicide after a year of guilt.

http://www.flatrock.org.nz/static/frontpage/assets/odds_and_oddities/wanting_a_meal.jpg

[–]Likonium 0 points1 point ago

Don't take issue with one cameraman just recording it, take issue with TWO cameramen just recording and not doing anything.

[–]dickbag63 0 points1 point ago

At least it's on his leg and not around his neck.

[–]Bix_Nood 0 points1 point ago

A good natural photographer never interferes with his subject. Besides, saving one animal just leaves another to starve.

[–]ZofSpade 0 points1 point ago

No need to point out the camera since it's ALREADY A PICTURE. The guy taking this picture is doing the same thing.

[–]CommonWaveSounds 0 points1 point ago

must let nature take its course

[–]stemgang 0 points1 point ago

Prime Directive.

Can't interfere.

[–]The_Dorklord 0 points1 point ago

That cameraman is just upholding the prime directive. That kid may very well grow up to be the next Kony.

[–]guyontheend -1 points0 points ago

Wow. black dudes really do have bigger dicks

[–]MuttonTheChops -1 points0 points ago

How the FUCK is this on front page of Reddit!? Pretty much all of us fuckers complain about reposts and I saw this on facebook...FACEBOOK! around a month ago! WHAT THE LITERAL FUCK REDDIT!

[–]Alexxandria 0 points1 point ago

Wow. Chill out.
