This has got to be one of the best wartime posters ever. I said this to my mum the other day and for some reason she looked at me weirdly, It didn't matter because she took my sister with her to the shops, take that Adolf!

Every American was given a book of 'ration stamps' that permitted how much gasoline an individual could buy. Essential services, such as hospitals and fire departments were allowed more gas. Everything was hard to come by during the war; gas, tires, baking flour and especially sugar. I can't imagine living in such an era and then in the 50s, there was such an abundance of everything and it seemed like there was an endless supply. This is a powerful image.
