I knew I was out of it when 'adults' starting reminiscing about pokemon...

[–]WorLord 33 points34 points ago

...which I have never once played.

[–]TripperDay 9 points10 points ago

Just turned 40. I know that feel.

[–]videogameexpert 31 points32 points ago

I played it. It's exactly how you would expect it to be. Boring, repetative, terrible graphics, terrible interface, and spreadsheets everywhere to learn how the game works.

The collection aspect is fun, and the multiplayer combat is fun at the high (high) levels, but just playing the game for the game is not fun. This holds true for any version of Pokemon. If you want to test it out I highly recommend playing the latest version. You aren't missing anything in the previous 20 versions and it has a few conveniences added to the game and interface.

[–]SteelOwl 7 points8 points ago

You're getting downvotes, and I'm not surprised judging by the amount of lame pokemon related links that make it to the front page, I'll upvote you for sharing your opinion. There are a lot of younger redditors here that love their pokemon. I am over 30 and I too have tried a few of the pokemon games. I agree completely with what you said; I found the games boring and juvenile.

[–]CheesedMyself 19 points20 points ago

The thing is...you're 30. You were about 15-17? Around the time pokemon came out so the hype for it around your age wasn't at all too high for pokemon.

Now imagine what pokemon meant to us 5-9 year olds . We would wake up every Saturday morning just to catch the latest of Ash and Pikachu adventures. He would fight gym leaders, have opportunities to catch legendary pokemon and just let them go which was by the biggest "wtf are you doing not catching that bad ass pokemon!" Shit, the opening theme song was about catching all the pokemon.

So when the games came out, us young ones literally had the world of pokemon in our hands, we had control over who we caught, control over Pikachu and evolving him with thunder stone, collecting gym badges and actually needing to beat the gym leaders to progress in the game, and best of all was using the skills that the pokemon had to use in the game, surf and fly being my favorite. And of course catching all the pokemon Ash didn't.

So we understand that to you older peeps must of been bored of the game, but to us young ones it was not just a game but a way of life in par with a T.V series

Until Yugioh and bayblade came out, cards and tops man.....cards and tops everywhere.

[–]98PercentChimp 1 point2 points ago

I didn't understand a third of the words you said...

[–]CheesedMyself 0 points1 point ago

Hush up bobo, you're 98% chimp.

[–]Thranil 0 points1 point ago

My 8 & 10 year old kids play it. I tried once... meh.

[–]cycopl 2 points3 points ago

I played and enjoyed the first pokemon when it came out (I was 15). I lost interest quickly when every fucking pokemon after that was the EXACT SAME GAME with different sprites.

What's funny is that the people who worship pokemon are usually the same people that bash on CoD for not changing the game enough between iterations.

[–]VC61 0 points1 point ago

Spreadsheet to learn how the game works? Are we talking the first games? They were so simple.

[–]mikarm 1 point2 points ago

The first few pokemon games were very simple, you just ran around in tall grass and caught or knocked out pokemon when you were not beating gym leaders. The later pokemon games were made more complicated and ruined the game. I think they were just trying to add more depth to the game but it really killed it because the simplicity of the original was what made it great(at the time). I agree it is pretty boring now, I have tried to play some of the new ones and there is just too much going on.

[–]webster21 37 points38 points ago

What is Gangnam style?

[–]hotcod 29 points30 points ago

It's a song by a Korean rapper called PSY that's been an international hit due to the video that includes a silly dance. As I understand it Gangnam is effectively a Beverly Hills type deal in South Korea. It's where the fashionable and rich live, the trend setters and such. So Gangnam style in the abstract is that style of life in Korea, lyrics to the chorus are pretty much "I live a Gangnam style life"

Now what's really fun about it is that it's been suggested that PSY who is well known for being subversive in the way he uses his public persona is actually pretty much taking the piss out of the people who idolise that life and it's empty and shallow consumer culture....

Hell just read the following :)

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/08/gangnam-style-dissected-the-subversive-message-within-south-koreas-music-video-sensation/261462/

[–]sananthropis -1 points0 points ago

So, it is the South Korean word for *douche baggery that just got lost in the translation?

[–]sexybobo -2 points-1 points ago

In easy to understand terms
Oppan Gangnam style = I have Swagger.

Video is mocking the term.

[–]xdanknastyx 1 point2 points ago

The song is actually all about what kind of girls he likes and is essentially an internal joke about Korean life Oppa means older male...So in this super rich district the girls all go for the older rich male, which PSY himself is (born to a rich family himself). The reason it is so popular is that it is a catchy dance able melody that incorporates comedy.

[–]sexybobo 4 points5 points ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Y_gfyeFLA Um wrong

First the word is "oppan" which means "guy is" or "guy embodies"
Gangnam is an affluent trend setting part of Seoul much like Beverly Hills in the US
So him singing Oppan Gangnam Style = Him saying I am the embodiment of the Beverly-hill life style.

The video in essence is a guy talking about how he is the epidomy of luxury style on poise while the video is clearly showing the opposite.

[–]xdanknastyx 1 point2 points ago

ahh thanks i had the lyrics roughly explained to me by a kpop fan

[–]hotcod 0 points1 point ago

I know, that's why I left the same link at the bottom of my post :P

[–]007orange 2 points3 points ago

no idea how I missed that entire second paragraph lol

[–]hotcod 0 points1 point ago

I tend to talk to much for what little I say so I don't blame you for missing it :)

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

i thank you

[–]CaffeinatedGuy 3 points4 points ago

As a 30 year old redditor, this needs an answer.

[–]TrumansRevenge 9 points10 points ago

Also 30, and I feel like this craze is just this years Macarena, or Who let the Dogs Out. We'll look back in ten years and be ashamed.

[–]stephimatt99 3 points4 points ago

FTFY

[–]webster21 -2 points-1 points ago

I am 24 lol

[–]IViolateSocks 8 points9 points ago

If only I had a novelty account, LetMeWikipediaThatForYou

"Gangnam Style" is a 2012 K-pop single by the South Korean rapper PSY. "Gangnam Style" is widely praised for its humor, catchy rhythm as well as Psy's unusual dance moves that have introduced many people to K-pop. First released on July 15, 2012, it entered the Gaon Chart singles chart at number one upon release and is the most viewed K-pop song on YouTube.

[–]webster21 -2 points-1 points ago

lmgtfy.com would be a great one too.

[–]arancionissimo 0 points1 point ago

Huh. I'm 25 and I haven't bothered to find out what the fuss is all about. Thank you for educating me. Next step would be to watch the video then? But why should I care again?

[–]nongshim 0 points1 point ago

it is a pretty good video. See where he lampoons music video/high society.

[–]Molestinyocookies 2 points3 points ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

It's a catchy song, in Korean, with a silly dance. It has the same appeal as the Macarena: you can dance like an idiot, and nobody knows the lyrics, so it's highly accesible and nobody will be a dickwad about it by trying to tell you the deeper meaning or anything.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

Bit of English mixed in.

[–]Molestinyocookies 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, sorry, I meant that most of the lyrics are not understandable (unless you know Korean). Just like Macarena, of which everybody only knows two lines.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

"sexy lady"

[–]DatoeDakari -1 points0 points ago

It's this generation's Macarena.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

Way to make me feel old lol. And i am not.

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

90's kids are not old...yet.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

At what years should you have been born to be a 90's kid? Beer is good. :)

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

You had to be at least 4 or 5 in 1990 and no older than 15 in '95.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

So being 2 in 1990 and 12 in 2000 makes me?

[–]DatoeDakari 0 points1 point ago

If you are born in the part of a decade ending in 7, 8, or 9, you are an inbetweener.

[–]webster21 0 points1 point ago

Too many rules lol.

[–]Klavonsky 6 points7 points ago

30'ies

Let's just call it 30s. I read your spelling as thirty-e's

[–]MulderFoxx 6 points7 points ago

I asked my 65 year old Korean Mother in Law if she knew what Gangnam style was and she and her 70 year old Korean husband started singing the song and doing the dance - perfectly.

[–]thefreshscent 1 point2 points ago

I'm 22...seriously...what's gangman style?

[–]thonic 1 point2 points ago

[–]Cactusgun 1 point2 points ago

What I learned from the english subtitles are he likes women and hot coffee.

[–]thefreshscent -5 points-4 points ago

So it's just a chubby Korean guy dancing and singing for 4 minutes to a techno beat? This is something I would have loved when I was 11.

[–]thonic -1 points0 points ago

yeah :D ... I am not 11 and I am not a South Korean for the record, I just love Starcraft :D ... they say he is incredibly popular for the atmosphere at his concerts

[–]xSARGEx117x 3 points4 points ago

I read this as "thirty-ees"...

[–]classyguy1978 15 points16 points ago

I used to be "with it", but then "it" got retarded and I stopped caring or paying attention. It'll happen to you.

[–]Aerofluff 3 points4 points ago

Agreed. I just now had to go wiki/youtube Gangnam Style, and... while hysterical, I can't say I really care much about it. Don't get how that video has so many views.

[–]milleribsen -1 points0 points ago

oh no! people like things that you don't like!

[–]classyguy1978 2 points3 points ago

When the popular musical acts are guys like Justin Bieber, people become famous celebrities for leaking sex tapes, and the popular shows on TV are about ignorant substance abusing guidos and teen mothers, I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that our culture and the intelligence of our citizens has degraded. Maybe those conspiracy guys who rant about the fluoride in the water are right.

[–]milleribsen 1 point2 points ago

There is so much more to culture, and pop culture than that. Look at the people who are doing great work such as Adele and Emma stone, we happen to be in this moment but many of those things which you have rallied against will be forgotten with time. Culture sustains more than can be remembered.

[–]classyguy1978 0 points1 point ago

You're right, I'm glossing over the surface; the good stuff is what will be remembered and even back in the day there was stupid shit in pop culture that's all been forgotten. Despite all that I would still argue that todays culture celebrates shallow glamour, production value over talent, ignorance and excess in a way not seen in the past. Not to say it's all shit, but there's more shit than there used to be.

Good comment, upvote for you.

[–]thugglet 6 points7 points ago

Welcome, also a late 30's redditor. I keep most comments to my self. The dont like us old folks here.

[–]WorLord 2 points3 points ago

I was actually wondering if there is a thirtysomething subreddit I could join. I really like reddit, but think a sub wherein the topics of conversation cater to an older crowd would be welcome.

[–]stephimatt99 0 points1 point ago

Forty-somthing here. I win/lose.

[–]bann7nghat7rs 1 point2 points ago

Looks like grandpa forgot his medication again.

[–]JesseCuster40 3 points4 points ago

I'm 34. I was never "with it" so I don't care. In fact, I take a certain kind of satisfaction in not being with it. It's probably snobbery, though. So I don't know if it's a good thing or not.

[–]richard_photograph 2 points3 points ago

34 years old here..i agree.

[–]LimeyG 2 points3 points ago

I just looked up Gangnam Style yesterday; still not sure whether it's the song, the dance, or if there's more to it.

I realized I was old when I started yelling at MTV.

[–]YesIAmTheCatLady 2 points3 points ago

Well I'm 18 and I just had to google it.

[–]Bugzrip 2 points3 points ago

I only knew what it was because it has been all over Reddit.

[–]evanthesquirrel[!] 2 points3 points ago

Gangnam style is the Party Rock anthem of 2012

[–]Weretoad 4 points5 points ago

I'm honestly impressed that there are presumably tech-savvy people on reddit that don't know what Gangnam Style is.

By the way, the artist was making a mockery of the opulence of the Gangnam district of Korea. It's more tongue-in-cheek humor, it seems.

I don't care for it, but I certainly know what it is.

[–]domonx 5 points6 points ago

"presumably tech-savvy people on reddit" that was last decade, now it's just a message board for facebook.

[–]zoomdaddy 5 points6 points ago

Tech-savvy =/= "with it." I work at one of the top tech companies in the world and I'll tell you right now I have no idea what's cool in pop culture these days.

[–]droneprime 2 points3 points ago

I hear they're wearing onions on their belts.

[–]JeffVanGundy 7 points8 points ago

I'm honestly impressed that there are presumably tech-savvy people on reddit that don't know what Gangnam Style is.

What about our being tech-savvy would make us likely to have run across a music video from Korea?

[–]Weretoad 1 point2 points ago

I meant that tech savvy people spend time on the Internet. Gangnam Style is all over the Internet. I don't understand why everyone is being so sensitive about what I said.

[–]Pseudo_Ex 0 points1 point ago

I'm 26 and I don't get it either. I can't say I care to look it up.

[–]NightOwl58 -1 points0 points ago

It's really not worth it. Just the new insanely popular song that will last about a month before falling into the background when the next one comes out.

[–]Xeteh 0 points1 point ago

When is your birthday, someone needs to buy you a calendar.

[–]RiNgO70 -4 points-3 points ago

I'm 15 and I don't get it either. I saw it and I just don't know what the big deal is.

[–]wretcheddawn -1 points0 points ago

I knew what it was before my teenage and college aged siblings and I'm in my late 20s.

[–]TheSimplyOG 1 point2 points ago

every time i hear gangnam style i go to listen to it.

[–]Ftlguy88 0 points1 point ago

That was so last week.... Get with "it"....ಠ_ಠ

[–]BlackHairedStranger 1 point2 points ago

I still don't know what it is. I don't understand a lot that goes on around here anymore. If I ever mention that without mentioning my age I get downvoted for being too obviously hipster.

I'm not hipster :( I'm just old. I earned my disconnection from popular media honestly, by aging right past any interest in it.

[–]Thomsenite 1 point2 points ago

The head of HR brought it up during an interview I had yesterday. I felt so with it, but I wasn't quite sure if it was a trick question to see if I spent too much time on the internet.

[–]vurma 0 points1 point ago

Was anyone else annoyed that they used a grave accent as the first quotation mark every single time?

[–]holysocks 0 points1 point ago

if you're on reddit enough, you're with it

[–]headzoo 0 points1 point ago

I've never been "with it". I'm hoping one of these days what I am and have always been will become the "it" thing, and then I'll live like a king!

[–]s7r1k3r 1 point2 points ago

I just found out yesterday and I am 28. Mind you I don't have any social accounts whatsoever other than reddit so that might be it. I still don't get the hype with gangnam either way.

[–]Inteli_Gent 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry. I'm 22, and I think Gangnam Style is fucking retarded.

[–]MinorThreat89 3 points4 points ago

Well, I'm 23 and think it's hilarious!

[–]Thornar68 0 points1 point ago

I think the best part of that video is him yelling at the chick's ass haha

[–]Whataboutthatguy 0 points1 point ago

When will then be now? Soon.

[–]KofOaks 0 points1 point ago

I got no fucking idea what the kids are talking about these days with their pokemons, their Bieber, their "drops" and fucken Glee.

No clue. Happy not to have any.

[–]snorga1 0 points1 point ago

I only saw the video yesterday, and I'm 20 years old. I proceeded to make a confused old man face at it the entire time, however, because that shit is ridiculous.

[–]MoroseMoose 0 points1 point ago

"Gangnam style" has nothing to do with how old you are. Its more about how much you dont read the interwebs or watch tv. He was on the big screen at a dodgers game two weeks ago, Nelly Furtado has already done a cover of the song live at one of her concerts, and hes been all over youtube for a month.

Edit: and oh ya, he's been all over reddit and I have seen references to him hit the front page at least two or three times in the last few weeks.

[–]Siarles 0 points1 point ago

I'm only 21 and just found out what it was yesterday. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

[–]kurfu 0 points1 point ago

Simple - it's the 2010's version of this song. From what I've read about "Gangnam Style", it's pretty much the exact same lyrical theme (crazy life, or whatever).

[–]PaulMcGannsShoes 0 points1 point ago

Oh look, this thread again.

[–]_Mattman_ 0 points1 point ago

Thirtee'ees?

[–]Shumuu 0 points1 point ago

[–]jonnyohio 0 points1 point ago

I didn't even know it existed until just now. I'm also in my late 30's, and that's why you deserve an up vote from me, because until now I thought I was the only 'old' person lurking around here.

[–]bpiraeus 0 points1 point ago

I still have no idea what it is, and honestly don't care enough to look, don't feel bad - an early 40s redditor.

[–]sagewah 1 point2 points ago

The problem with Gangnam Style in your late 30s is the spare tyre.. when you stop doing the gangnam style horse riding dance thing, it keeps going for some time after. Which will just make your kids laugh even harder.

That, and if you listen to it often enough you find yourself almost convinced you can speak Korean.

[–]HarveyBalls 0 points1 point ago

As a 40ish redditor, I can say I just looked it up, watched a couple videos, and now I'm even more confused.

[–]crazyjimmy 0 points1 point ago

Well shit man what is Gangnam styly?

[–]alibee123 0 points1 point ago

If it makes you feel better, I'm 22 and up until 3 minutes ago I had never heard of Gangnam Style. I still have no idea what the hell it is.

[–]baymare 0 points1 point ago

I still don't know what it is. I don't really care to find out either. I guess at 32 I'm officially an adult now? Or just apathetic after 17 years of internet...

[–]ableom 0 points1 point ago

You are so far from "it" if you think Gangnam style is "it".

Doesn't have anything to do with age.

[–]GenKan 0 points1 point ago

I feel you and sadly Im only in my late 20´ies :/

[–]jagermo -5 points-4 points ago
