I'm excited about the Lumia 920 but this list is kind of cherry picking. Would be nice to see more technical specs and fewer highly marketed talking point features for the Nokia phone. I'm sure iPhone has SOME features the Lumia lacks.

[–]hckygod91 2 points3 points ago

unndunn is right, the iphone 5 has no real features over the lumia as far as ive read (which is a lot)

[–]unndunn 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure iPhone has SOME features the Lumia lacks.

It really doesn't. Unless you count "made by Apple" as a feature.

[–]djgreedo 23 points24 points ago

iPhone 5 has Bluetooth 4, WP8 doesn't. iPhone 5 has a much more mature established app and accessory ecosystem

I'm sure there's another thing I'm forgetting that I liked about the iPhone 5 that WP lacks, but can't recall.

But yeah...Lumia 920 is overall a much better device, and I can't wait to get mine.

EDIT: thinner...the iPhone is significantly thinner than the Lumia 920.

[–]Shenkey 4 points5 points ago

You forgot its 1/3 lighter.

[–]Din2Age 2 points3 points ago

Thinner doesn't really matter to me. I would rather have better battery life and things like that than a phone a few millimeters thinner. They wasted their time and effort making it thinner when they could have been adding useful, cool features.

[–]imh 8 points9 points ago

That's funny, because I feel the exact opposite way. I don't need all these other features and just want the smallest possible phone that can do maps and navigation. Other features feel wasted to me. To each his own, I guess.

[–]Din2Age 5 points6 points ago

For sure. People have different things they want in a phone ... this is why it is good that Android and WP8 are around, and why we should hope they are successful.

[–]MKT17 0 points1 point ago

Exactly, I don't care if it's thicker if it means the battery is better...Something else I hear people going on about is the weight of the phone...I don't care about that aswell, i'll leave focusing on the weight of a phone to a woman., no offence

[–]OhioMallu -2 points-1 points ago

iPhone 5 has a much more mature established app and accessory ecosystem

app ecosystem - yes

accessories - no (since they changed the adapters)

[–]snkscore 6 points7 points ago

accessories - no (since they changed the adapters)

But, every accessory maker is going to have produces for the iphone 5 immediately. How many will support the Nokia device?

[–]InvisibleUp -1 points0 points ago

Apple sells adapters for the new plugs on their website, by the way.

[–]GeekBrownBear 3 points4 points ago

I enjoyed how they spent a few minutes on the panorama feature for iPhone 5...

The new camera/sensor is something you spend a few minutes on and then have a single slide with the new features bulleted.

[–]tearsofsadness -4 points-3 points ago

How about 3 microphones?

Or a higher PPI screen?

[–]ccunningham63 12 points13 points ago

Three mics, yes. However, this spec sheet disagrees with you about pixel density.

[–]SrsSteel 7 points8 points ago

Great read and wow, that pretty much sold the Lumia 920 to me.

[–]tearsofsadness 4 points5 points ago

Thanks for the link. I had assumed incorrectly that it didn't have a high PPI.

[–]CoolDeal 7 points8 points ago

Your other assumption about the 3 microphones was wrong too :)

http://wmpoweruser.com/the-nokia-lumia-920-features-3-high-amplitude-microphones/

[–]tearsofsadness 3 points4 points ago

Cool. Its great when other companies innovate. I'm really hoping Nokia takes off. Great hardware a and a great OS.

[–]unndunn 11 points12 points ago

Lumia 920 has higher PPI than iPhone 5 (332 vs. 326). Lumia 920 also has multiple microphones for noise cancellation and beam-forming. Not sure how many though.

[–]sasmithjr 2 points3 points ago

Lumia 920 is confirmed to have Nokia Rich Recording. Rich Recording uses three microphones and records a larger frequency range than the iPhone 5's three microphones based upon the provided graph.

[–]dtjb 20 points21 points ago

This is a completely honest and impartial comparison </s>

[–]LSD_freakout 9 points10 points ago

i like how the clock says 9:20

[–]Hamstertoast 30 points31 points ago

Circlejerk Circlejerk Circlejerk

[–]jabberworx 1 point2 points ago

But if we don't circlejerk how will we remember we like the lumia more than the iphone?

[–]SCDP 1 point2 points ago

Forgot the most important criteria:

"Shipping next Friday"

[–]RobotMan6827364 10 points11 points ago

Also:

  • iPhone : coming soon, iOS :)
  • Nokia: not so soon, Windows Phone :(

[–]Xab 10 points11 points ago

The Lumia 920 is coming in like a month and a half. That's pretty soon. And seriously, iOS is really looking dated next to WP8 and Android.

[–]projectkevin 3 points4 points ago

WP8 looks great but Android is a mess from a development (and, IMO, user) perspective.

Also the fact that Microsoft have delayed the WP8 SDK is a concerning.

You can argue Android vs. iOS vs. WP8 all day long, but what really makes the platform(s) work are the apps that extend the phones functionality. Android is too much of a minefield, WP8 has no apps right now (and it isn't ready for them at all, so soon to launch) while iOS is just right - and obviously benefits from age at this point.

[–]TheNr24 0 points1 point ago

Jelly Bean is pretty much perfect though.

[–]bork99 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't matter too much right now since WP7.5 apps will run on WP8 and, while it's not in the hundreds of thousands, WP7.5 has a respectable app selection. Most if not all of the stuff people care about is there.

The close ties between the Windows 8 APIs and the WP8 APIs are interesting too - suddenly it's quite appealing to develop an app that can run with minimal work on both Windows and WP. And since there will be hundreds of millions of Windows 8 devices out there before long, simply by default, so developing for Windows 8 is almost a no-brainer.

[–]djgreedo 1 point2 points ago

I wish someone would do a side-by-side comparison of the WP8 start screen (3 tile sizes, pinned apps, updates, pins from 'inside apps; like Kindle books, animations, etc.) and the iPhone 5 start screen (another row of static icons!).

Seriously, the announcement of another row f icons is a sad, unintentional self-parody of the lack of innovation in the last few iPhones. iPhone is basically half way to becomming what Windows Mobile was at the time the first iPhone launched.

[–]professionalbadass 7 points8 points ago

To be fair, almost all of those things in the list are more or less novelties than actual meaningful features. I mean come on, NFC? Wireless charging? And you're probably only gonna use the glove thing for around 3 months per year, depending on where you live.

The iPhone 5 was very underwhelming, though.

[–]PENISPUNCHER 4 points5 points ago

I agree, the iPhone 5 is meh (in terms of new features) and to me the Lumia is slightly above that. NFC hasn't taken off in my area, it is rarely cold enough to use gloves, and wireless charging is a cool novelty but hardly a reason to pick this over the competition. The free Nokia streaming music player isn't even that great of a feature since I use Spotify and having unified playlists/last.fm scrobbler for all of my devices is well worth the subscription.

I love the aesthetics of the iPhone 5, and it is going to be noticeably slimmer than the Lumia. In fact I think the Lumia looks slightly childish with its bright colors.

If it were not for the OS of the Lumia I doubt I would even consider getting it. I loved the interface of WP7 and WP8 seems to be well on its way to being even better.

[–]delightedrobot 0 points1 point ago

I used my 4s with a bicycle glove on yesterday - that comparison is nonsense.

While I have no plans to buy either phone, NFC is a game changer. It's more secure than credit cards and will eliminate most of the crap people need in a wallet. If you have an NFC phone, you can already use it at places like Duane Reed in NYC, it will be other places soon.

[–]noreallyimthepope 2 points3 points ago

The glove thing is probably my biggest want.

[–]sm4k 0 points1 point ago

Same. Even if I'm wearing gloves for 2 weeks out of the year, having to take them off to control music is measurable pain in the ass.

[–]noreallyimthepope 0 points1 point ago

I live in Scandinavia, so gloves are for a bit longer—especially since I bike around, plus I tend to get out at all hours of the days. I've tried these, but within a few weeks, they lost their ability to control the iPhone.

[–]TheNr24 -4 points-3 points ago

Well jesus, what did you want then? Honestly, how could you expect even more?

[–]professionalbadass 3 points4 points ago

To be honest, I just want people not to bitch about every breath Apple takes. It's not like the 920 is some spectacular game-changing superphone. The iPhone 5 also isn't, but Nokia/Samsung/HTC aren't making anything out of this world either.

[–]TheNr24 -1 points0 points ago

It's not like the 920 is some spectacular game-changing superphone.

Isn't it?

[–]clickheretolose 2 points3 points ago

If only Microsoft and Nokia had the Lumia 920 ready sooner.

I'm looking forward to some real head to head comparisons. The Lumia 920 sure does look better on paper, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will perform up to expectations.

[–]varkson 3 points4 points ago

I don't understand why people are interested in wireless charging. I often want or need to use my phone when charging. A cable is only a second or two slower.

[–]TheHobo 3 points4 points ago

The American motto is "Give me convenience or give me death". With wireless charging, you would drop your phone onto the charging area like you would your keys when coming home, which is more convenient than fiddling with the cable. Also harder to break your USB port if you're not exercising it every night.

[–]10weight 0 points1 point ago

Apparently you need to line the phone up quite precisely for it to charge. Hmmm.....

[–]TheNr24 0 points1 point ago

untrue if you use the fatboy charging cushion.

[–]10weight 0 points1 point ago

Nice find. Personally I can take or leave wireless charging until you could have a much larger distance between the surface and phone.

For example, anywhere within a room, or even house. Perhaps something like with 10 foot of a plug sockets etc.

It's a nice to have but I'd only use it if the charger came free.

Thanks for the link though!

[–]djgreedo 0 points1 point ago

Convenience is king. It's the little details and conveniences that make the difference between good technology and great technology.

If/when wireless charging truly takes off it will be easy to keep your devices charged wherever you are - at work, at a cafe, and home, in the car. Potentially anywhere you put down your phone it could be charging.

I personally keep a USB cable by my bed, and it gets tangled if I'm not careful or need to grab my phone in the middle of the night. In fact, I often don't pick up my phone because it's a pain to carefully pull out the connector in the dark.

Ubiquitous wireless charging could also lead to thinner, lighter devices. If you're never far from a charging source you can skimp on the battery size a bit to enable slimmer form factors, brighter screens, etc.

[–]sm4k 0 points1 point ago

My issue is that MicroUSB cables seems to always eventually give out on me. I know they're incredibly cheap but it is really inconvenient to have to either go find a different cable or strategically position the phone to ensure enough contact happens to allow charging.

I've been through 3 phones with Micro USB ports, and each phone has had the same result: eventually the micro USB cord just gets slutty. The port always seems fine. My wife has MicroUSB phones and doesn't seem to have the problem, at least not to the same extent, so maybe it's just me.

[–]fingerbangher 1 point2 points ago

They have gloves with special tips that make it work on the iPhone, if the whole glove thing makes you cream your pants, why not just buy a pair of gloves for your smartphone, they be cheap, like fifteen bucks

[–]djgreedo 4 points5 points ago

That sounds a lot like Apple's rhetoric that wireless charging is more complicated than a cable.

Buying a special pair of gloves for a special use case is terrible. And the glove thing is an example of the benefit of the great touchscreen on the Lumia, not the sole reason for its existence (it also enables more responsive touch and use with fingernails, etc.)

I have no doubt that if Apple announced wireless charging and a touchscreen that works through gloves there would be singing from the rooftops at the amazing magical innovations from Apple.

[–]hates_gingers 0 points1 point ago

In the release of the Nokia 920 and 820, they said something about how they wanted to make a phone that adapts to the user, not the other way around. Personally, I wouldn't want to get new gloves just to use my smartphone.

[–]NastiestNayt 9 points10 points ago

Use it wearing gloves? Seems like you threw that one in there to make the table bigger...

[–]unndunn 23 points24 points ago

As a New Yorker who deals with temps in the 20s and 30s every Winter, this is a killer feature.

[–]tapwater86 19 points20 points ago

As a New Yorker moving to San Diego this Saturday, ha ha!

[–]ComicOzzy 9 points10 points ago

As a Texan... WTF are 'gloves'?

[–]tapwater86 6 points7 points ago

Bet you don't know what this is either

[–]ComicOzzy 6 points7 points ago

Cattle prod?

[–]shniken 4 points5 points ago

That is really weird dildo. You sick freak.

[–]benshere 1 point2 points ago

looks like it would hit the prostate perfectly...for a large hippo

[–]unndunn 3 points4 points ago

I went to San Diego for a weekend a few months ago.

I hate you so much right now.

[–]tapwater86 2 points3 points ago

I lived there for 6 years. Moved here 2 years ago. Noping the fuck out. Run while you can my friend.

[–]unndunn -1 points0 points ago

The reason I was in San Diego in the first place was for a job interview. So yeah, I've considered moving out West.

[–]endurotech 0 points1 point ago

Consider carefully, it can get hot in San Diego unless you're near the coast but I live in the Bay Area peninsula where temperatures are generally 50s - 70s all year

[–]ComicOzzy 3 points4 points ago

Here in Texas, we call that 'winter'.

[–]ciscomd 1 point2 points ago

San Diego very rarely gets up to what anyone would consider "hot" as long as you're within a few miles of the ocean. Drive an hour inland, of course, and all bets are off, but that's not San Diego.

[–]immy79 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. Grew up in San Diego and glad to have escaped.

[–]Popular-Pete 0 points1 point ago

Oh you poor thing :(
Hey, come and live in Finland for a (very long) winter and New York will feel like a summer vacation after that!

[–]MrGreencastle 3 points4 points ago

It matters to me. You can also use it with your fingernails. (for women)

[–]chka -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure about the size of either of them...

[–]notthatbright -1 points0 points ago

Excellent cake day post!

[–]atcoyou -1 points0 points ago

They just HAD to point out that they are both shiny!!! Now Apple is going to win the war, the only way they can now that innovation had dried up... they are going to sue Nokia cause they probably have some patent on shiny!

[–]dhcrazy333 1 point2 points ago

New iPod Nano sure looks a lot like the Lumia...

[–]bolognasilencer 0 points1 point ago

I thought the same thing when I saw it. Bring on the patent litigation!

[–]Auxonin 0 points1 point ago

I hope you enjoy using the Lumia, my personal experience has been awful with the previous generations.

[–]shinratdr 0 points1 point ago

An unbiased chart if I ever seen one.

Hint, if my electric toothbrush wins out against the Lumia on more points in this chart than the iPhone, then it's probably not a great chart for a phone.

[–]dataCRABS 0 points1 point ago

I shared this with Microsoft's Ben the PC guy (the guy who does the 'Smoked by Windows Phone' stuff, and he loved it!

[–]lepuma 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but it doesn't have the App store. That kills it for me.

[–]Marak210 1 point2 points ago

Not bagging on the wireless charging thing infact I think it's awesome but can the battery handle the user picking it up and putting it back often? It's going to mean a lot of stop start battery charging situations since now you basically need to disconnect it each time you interact with it, at least before you can still use it and it had the charger plugged in although sometimes awkwardly.

[–]deuteros 1 point2 points ago

Aside from the larger screen I honestly don't really care about any of those features. I'm pretty happy with my Galaxy Nexus.

[–]natrapsmai 0 points1 point ago

lol. You forgot one.

Reversible plug:

iPhone 5: ✓ Lumia 920: x

[–]skratakh -2 points-1 points ago

to be honest other than battery life, none of the other features interest me in the slightest.

[–]documents1856 0 points1 point ago

From all this iPhone 5 hype, what I ended up getting out of it was reading how Apple is playing catch up with it's competitors (and still trailing), seeing specs in comparison to the other top phones, having me reevaluate my myTouch slider and directing me to the Lumia and other Windows phones. I am still going to buy my tablet, but now it makes me wonder if I will benefit more from buying Win8 Phone before i build my desktop...

[–]hckygod91 -2 points-1 points ago

this is quite true
