Even though it was a short appearance I really liked the Robin in Batman: Arkham City. (i.imgur.com)

Dude, Harley's Revenge DLC has you play as him.
[–]FancyBandit 23 points24 points25 points 12 days ago
Agreed, the DLC is very worth it imo, great story add-on, adds about 3 more hours of gameplay. I've dropped far too much money on this game, but all the DLC is amazing.
[–]TriForce64 16 points17 points18 points 12 days ago
The story was sooo weak though.
[–]venomousbeetle 14 points15 points16 points 11 days ago
No free-roam either
[–]HeronSun 4 points5 points6 points 11 days ago
Agreed. Granted, it was only 10 dollars, where other companies would have you pay 15-20 bucks. But still, the short time I was playing, coupled with the weak-sauce and untapped potential of the story killed it for me.
I loved Arkham City, though.
[–]limecat 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
Three hours?! Seriously?!
[–]RafaDelBarrio 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
At least it's just 10 dollars. Any other game would cost 15.
It took me like forty-five minutes. How much is Fallout DLC?
[–]dumppee 28 points29 points30 points 12 days ago
Anyone else think it'd be fun to beat the shit out of baddies as eight year old Damien?
[–]IAmTheGingaNinja 14 points15 points16 points 12 days ago
With a skins pack you get to play as animated Robin
[–]dumppee 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
Is animated Robin eight? That was sarcastic but now I'm wondering. I guess Tim is like 15. I have the skin pack, and always play as Red Robin, because I love him
[–]aholtz 8 points9 points10 points 12 days ago
No, you play essentially as the Dick Grayson Robin from the animated series, so it's college-aged Robin.
[–]DoomedVisionary 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
The Robin in AA is Tim. Nightwing is in the game so it's clearly not Dick. Right about the age though.
[–]ohhimark108 10 points11 points12 points 12 days ago
He's saying the Robin animated series skin is based on Dick, even if the game's Robin is Tim. The animated Nightwing costume is also based on Dick.
[–]DoomedVisionary 2 points3 points4 points 11 days ago
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh upvote for you and downvote for me. Thanks for clearing that up.
[–]dumppee -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 days ago
TAC robin was Tim. There's one episode with Nightwing, so Dick wouldn't be Robin
[–]PatroclusRex 13 points14 points15 points 11 days ago
TAS Robin was Dick for the first three seasons, then Tim for the last, with Dick as Nightwing.
[–]dumppee 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
I stand corrected.
[–]Chuckaluffagus 4 points5 points6 points 11 days ago
Damian is 10
OK, sorry, didn't really check any resources on this.
[–]IAmTheGingaNinja 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
To be honest, I don't know. Its the one from the animated series
[–]johnmcawesome 53 points54 points55 points 12 days ago
I hate how every modern incarnation of Batman leaves out Robin, everyone assumes Robin is just that flamboyant kid from the TV series. This game really showed the more mainstream fans how badass he can be, and I like that.
[–]The_Derpening 28 points29 points30 points 12 days ago
TAS had him and he was valuable and not useless at all
[–]imthegoddambatman 13 points14 points15 points 11 days ago
You should check out the Young Justice cartoon series. It has the most badass Robin IMO. Gets even better as Nightwing
[–]obsidiousaxman 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
And to think, all because of a dude who hated comic books.
[–]Blindstar 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
what?
[–]obsidiousaxman 3 points4 points5 points 11 days ago
Some psychologist (forget the name) didnt like comics so he started saying batman and robin were lovers. If you watch the 60s tv show you can kinda see the attitude towards homosexuality because a female in the house to calm suspicious
oh jeez, that sucks. The thought of them being gay never crossed my mind... I can't believe the show played into that... well I guess I can. It was pretty hokey.
[–]obsidiousaxman 2 points3 points4 points 11 days ago
As hokey as it was, it was bases off the comics of that time. Im not 100% sure but i think the comics had a similar female character. It didnt help with robins costume and pixie boots, but those familiar with his origin understand it.
[–]symbiotisch 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
Morrison's remarks add to that. In this Playboy interview he talks about Batman being 'very, very gay'. I really don't know how to comment on that because I don't want to piss people who like Morrison off.
[–]etherspin 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
let me do it for you , Morrison is trying to play Captain Subtext and failing hard. so what if he writes well or even brilliantly,Bruce /Batman lives with Alfred because he is the only family Alfred has and a Alfred is effectively his parent and usually has male sidekicks because of the situation but also probably cause society doesnt look well upon single male men adopting girls in their mid teens.
[–]symbiotisch 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
I haven't read any of Morrison's Batman, but if he fails to grasp that the basic concept of Batman being a loner has nothing to do with him being gay, I'm not so sure that one could call his work brilliant.
As I said, haven't read his work (apart from Final Crisis which I really disliked) and I don't plan to do it based on the things he said in that particular interview.
[–]Chuckaluffagus 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Morrison did a run on Batman and Robin, post Final Crisis, and it was really really good, as was Final Crisis. He did a lot to make Dick and Damian a compelling dynamic duo.
[–]wes-g 1 point2 points3 points 9 days ago
Too bad, because he's my favorite comic writer. His Batman is a blast, too, and very reverent toward the character's history. He was doing an interview with Playboy so he said something relatively banal: that the Batman concept has sexualized and possibly homosexual overtones. That doesn't make Batman "bad" or less interesting at all. Grant saying it is asinine, though, because it's such a ubiquitous insight.
[–]symbiotisch 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
Bad first impression on my behalf, I guess.
I didn't mean to affiliate being gay with 'bad' or 'less interesting' at all. It's just that it is untrue if he calls the concept of Batman gay, because he's got a male father figure and his sidekicks are mostly male. I really don't care if he's saying it because it's the Playboy, it just makes me doubt that he's understood the concept of Batman.
As I said, haven't read much that he's written, but it's stuff like this that keeps me from buying anything that has his name written on the cover. There certainly are writes that create awesome comic book stories (not just Batman) and refrain from giving stupid interviews.
Sounds like a rant, but it really shouldn't read as one. I'm not attacking your taste or anything. If you're happy with Morrison's stories than this is great. It's really, really nice to see a name and say 'Well, it's by xyz, I know I'll like that!'. It's just that Morrison will never be one of those writers for me.
[–]LukeNygma 5 points6 points7 points 12 days ago
And the Teen Titans!
[–]aMillionLasers -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 days ago
I hope that's not a spoiler for you, but have you seen spoiler? I thought that was really clever.
[–]ThatWeirdNewGuy 8 points9 points10 points 11 days ago
I thought it was forced and too predictable.
[–]Whimsical_Hobo 11 points12 points13 points 11 days ago
Should have been named Richard. Middle name Grayson. More subtle
[–]Gingermadman 3 points4 points5 points 11 days ago
Except the character was a mix of all 3 Robins personalities and backstory, so having his name as Grayson would have been silly.
[–]MasterLawlz -1 points0 points1 point 11 days ago
There are too many robins already. I don't want some stupid 30-year-old cop version too.
[–]Gingermadman 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Except Nolans universe is already completely different.
[–]MasterLawlz 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Well, I felt like he was in the ballpark for most of the characters, but that completely changed robin in every way
[–]JamesJFresh 3 points4 points5 points 11 days ago
That would've been cooler, but not a lot of people know Robin's actual name
[–]Whimsical_Hobo 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
Exactly
[–]brianbrianbrian 4 points5 points6 points 11 days ago
Then they don't get the reference, and it ruins nothing. However, making his fucking name Robin just annoys the real fans.
[–]OccamsCat 18 points19 points20 points 12 days ago
He's kinda wearing the hood because of two theories.
1: It helps the disguise. I mean, a mask won't be able to conceal your identity.
2: Its cold out! Its like the middle of winter in AC!
[–]Quinbot88 5 points6 points7 points 11 days ago
The hood actually came about because of Damien as Robin. In some of the new 52 B&R comics, they actually state the hood is bullet-proof to protect Damien. I like that explanation as it shows the level of thought either Damien or Bruce put into protecting THIS Robin.
[–]OccamsCat 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
But that's Damian. This is Tim Drake.
[–]Quinbot88 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
That's true. I think they used it to try and bridge to the gap. They knew they couldn't include Damien as Robin for casual fans, it would confused too many people. So rather they just threw hood in there, perhaps because they just thought it looked cool. I still like the attention to detail (even if they went off a rails a bit).
[–]OccamsCat 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Actually, Rocksteady wanted an Animated Series vibe to it. There not aiming for casual fans, there targeting Batman's Pinnacle. You know before it got confusing! This is also Pre-52. (Thankfully)
I recognize TAS vibe with the voice acting (because Kevin Conroy is the only voice of Batman), but beyond that I didn't get too much of that vibe. But to each their own. I still think the addition of the hood (which was pre-52 and if you haven't read into it much, I recommend giving it a chance. Court of Owls was THE BOMB), was an attempt to bridge some form of gap between Tim and Damien, as Tim never wore a hood on his costume (afaik).
[–]OccamsCat 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Really? Just the voice acting?
The story was written by Paul Dini to begin with. The character designs are obviously based of the ones in TAS. Riddler Challenges. There are HUGE references to TAS. And they even have Animated Series skins...
This for example looks like an updated version of This
Also. Not to mention This either or This
Also. This
As a bonus This which is a homage to the one on the far right, This
They based their builds off of TAS!
Blah. I had a post typed up and nuked my browser. Frick. Short version: Paul Dini is a boss so it makes sense to have him write the story. But beyond TAS based skins (which I didn't use, didn't like the feel with the rest of the game. Batman Beyond skin was choice though.), it didn't feel like they based it in TAS story frame/universe. I will concede it's been a few years since I've watched TAS so I need to go back and do that this weekend and do another play through.
The original Batman skin I'm not going to fully credit to TAS because in the comics he's been using that version of the suit since No Man's Land if my memory serves me correctly (again, it may not. But it gives me an excuse to dig through my online archives of all the major Batman arcs since like 1992. Bat-nerd weekend is a go!)
Rewatch TAS then play Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
NOW!
This is also the most I've ever participated in a reddit discussion, so you rule.
[–]quixotik 16 points17 points18 points 12 days ago
Yeah, he looks really bad ass but the hood needs to come down. Seriously that shit screws with your peripheral vision!
[–]samoorai 71 points72 points73 points 12 days ago
I think of this every time.
[–]ordinaryrendition 17 points18 points19 points 12 days ago
robin hood
[–]Chuckaluffagus 2 points3 points4 points 11 days ago
My favorite part about this is how after that, Damian gets pissed and tells Dick he can fight blind. He was trained to be an assassin.
[–]elvive 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Isn't this from All-Star Batman though? I was pretty sure this was Dick and not Damian.
[–]Chuckaluffagus 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
No, its from when Bruce was displaced in time, Dick was Batman, and Damian was the new Robin. It flashed back to Dick as Robin, and Bruce advised against the hood for its affect on peripheral vision, and ability to be yanked and his vision impaired. He did this to Damian, and Damian basically slapped him and told him to back off. Damian is a badass Robin. Dick never used a hood, ever.
Yeah, I know Dick never wore a hood in regular continuity- but the All Star Batman and Robin didn't follow continuity is the thing. From the wiki page: "Batman returns to the cave, and when Dick tells him his name is Hood, Batman points out that an opponent can easily pull the hood down over his head. Batman tells him to lose the hood and names him Robin. Dick receives a new costume made by Alfred."
Also, here's a picture from the page right after that. Damian wouldn't have been that passive, and they wouldn't have been talking about what to name him. And this looks like Jim Lee's work, and I don't recall him working on anything from the Bat-Dick time(though I could be wrong).
But yes, Damian is a bad ass. :)
Passive? Who said Damian was being passive?
[–]elvive 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago*
I think we're misunderstanding each other here, I have a tendency not to look over my posts to make sure they make sense to more people than myself, so my bad.
I meant if that was Damian in the page I linked instead of Dick, that would have been too passive of a reaction from Damian( as you said, Damian told him to back off, and the Robin in this image did not). The page with Batman pulling a hood over Robin's head after Robin says to call him Hood, is Bruce and a young Dick from "All Star Batman and Robin". I linked this picture to show the that in both pictures, the scene, art-style and unique Robin costume are the same(you can even see him holding the same bow in both pictures. Also, seeing as how Robin didn't slap Batman or tell him to back off- it's Dick, and not Damian that is in this picture. The wikipedia page for All Star Batman and Robin also describes this exact scene happening between Dick and Bruce, so it's not Damian.
And then at the end I agreed with you that Damian is a badass Robin...cos he is.
Ah... I was wrong. My bad. I grabbed my books of the shelf and checked. I had two panels mixed up. I read both books recently, so I was overly confident.
No worries, happens to me all the time actually :) lol. I was totally unsure until I went through my All Star Batman and Robin to check.
[–]Redfoxyboy 9 points10 points11 points 12 days ago
makes me cry everytim
[–]quixotik -2 points-1 points0 points 11 days ago
Lol, exactly!
[–]draytkd 8 points9 points10 points 12 days ago
The regular skin was cool but I didn't like Red Robin as much :/
[–]dumppee 11 points12 points13 points 12 days ago
I love the Red Robin cowl
[–]aholtz 7 points8 points9 points 12 days ago
Honestly, I like the Red Robin skin more than the regular.
To each his own.
[–]Crankrune 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
Personally I prefer the hood. A hood tends to look badass (See: Assassin Creed).
[–]woodelf 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
I agree, he kind of just looks like Batman without ears and it's weird.
[–]TheDarkJediKnight 4 points5 points6 points 12 days ago
Agreed. Basically took his 'tacky' outfit, and made into a variation of Batman's body armor. And they made him old enough so it's believable that he could've trained under Batman and is able to take care of himself and fight alongside him. For realistic takes of this world (such as the Arkham games and Nolan films) this is the only way Robin could work.
[–]Quinbot88 3 points4 points5 points 11 days ago
I like how the game designers obviously paid attention to the comic books. IIRC it was Tim who turned the Robin costume more into "armor" like Batman's as he progressed in his role as Robin. This clearly shows the detail they put into making this one of the best games ever. I want more!
[–]Marcob10 3 points4 points5 points 11 days ago
"Hey Robin, thanks for the delivery, now go home"
"okay"
That has to be the lamest cameo in a game.
[–]proddy 0 points1 point2 points 2 hours ago
"Fly home Buddy."
[–]Jaangles 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
I'd hit it. Not with a crowbar, if you know what I mean.
[–]CannibalIowa 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
Arkham City certainly put Robin in a much more serious light. He also was more than just a less experienced version of Batman; in Arkham City, Robin saved the Dark Knight and had some of his own talent.
[–]RotLopFan 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
How is that a different light? As far as I know from reading the comics and watching the show, that's what Robin's always been.
[–]CannibalIowa 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
Maybe it's just my opinion but Robin isn't viewed positively in the mainstream world. The best of Robin is when he's serious, I'm glad that Arkham City used him in a serious light.
[–]jrm5096 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
Dude, his DLC campaigns get so freakin' hard
[–]coconutcookie7 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
My SO was playing the other day and I caught this scene. First time I ever said an animated character was sexy.
[–]steveandstuff 3 points4 points5 points 12 days ago
I hate to be picky but something about the short sleeve outfit really messes it up for me. But dude, yes totally cool.
[–]Slowhand8824 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
totally agree
[–]BrownNote87 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
I have not played the game yet, which Robin do they use?
[–]SaberToothButterfly 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
They use Tim Drake.
[–]Poop_Maestro 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
Is he supposed to be Dick Grayson or Tim Drake? I've been wondering. I would say Dick just cause he's older
[–]thirsty4justice 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
Drake, Dick is in the game as Nightwing.
[–]Poop_Maestro 1 point2 points3 points 11 days ago
Oh yeah, duh. good call.
[–]xV1RALx 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
If Harley's Revenge had free roaming or you could switch to nightwing or robin like catwomen i would have been content
[–]zeldaholic 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
May I just say that while, yes, this is a badass character model and I absolutely love it; why the hell does someone who needs to protect their identity wear fingerless gloves! His fingerprints are all over gotham! It was the first thing I noticed about him and it bothers me way more then it should, the designers should have thought about that.
[–]MikeyToxin 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
My go-to character when playing the Riddler Challenges. I fucking love him.
[–]ColossiKiller 0 points1 point2 points 8 days ago
I like how when you're playing the story mode with the animated Batman skin, when you meet Robin he's in the animated skin too. Little details.
[–]RotLopFan 4 points5 points6 points 11 days ago
Am I the only person who doesn't like this? I've always seen Robin as a great addition to the Batman character, flamboyancy and all. The fact that Batman is willing to bring a young boy along to fight crime in bright colors speaks volumes about what's wrong with Bruce and makes him far more interesting than the one-note gloomy character that a lot of people want him to be. Not to mention the fact that Robin's some of the only cheerfulness to stick around Batman's weird life. Why can't we just let him stay happy? Why do people hate happiness so much?
I also just think this look is REALLY forced. The shaved head, the hood, the fact that he's wearing colors to try to still be Robin, but they gotta be dark and edgy (like everything else always forever or Batman SUCKS) all show, to me, a guy trying way too hard to seem tough. Even his stance in this picture! Look at him! He's trying to threaten us with the way he's standing! Shut up, Tim. Go smile despite all the tragedy in your life. You're cooler that way.
[–]woodelf 4 points5 points6 points 11 days ago
I think this is a valid comment and shouldn't be dismissed just because it's a different opinion. For what it's worth, I like Robin as a badass and really enjoyed playing as him in the game. I think Robin deserves to beat up baddies with finesse just as much as Batman. However, I know where you're coming from. Sometimes, Robin's role is to showcase Batman's humanity and camaraderie. It's easy to see this in TAS, especially the Christmas episode in which Dick tries to get Bruce to watch It's a Wonderful Life. Robin can be that kind of bridge between the ideals of Batman and living a coherent, productive life in society. That's my take of his character, anyway.
So, more to the point, I understand why someone wouldn't like this character design. I also really dislike the shaved head, but I think they covered it with the hood because they may have realized it was out of place. I think there's too much red in the costume; it needs way more green (regardless of any Christmas connotations). Kind of defeats the purpose of having the Red Robin, if the Robin costume itself is already red up the ass.
However, I do think that this side of Robin has a place, and he is well utilized in Arkham City. I imagine the lighter side of Robin still being a part of his character, but now he's grown up a bit and is just trying to get the job done. I gather this from the way the thugs talk to Robin; they patronize him a bit more than Batman and, to me, act as if he was never as much of a threat.
