I'm honestly curious why I should care about "karma whores". So a "karma whore" reposts stuff, but the posts get thousands of upvotes, right? Otherwise they wouldn't really be whoring karma if all their posts didn't get many upvotes. The upvotes tell me that the general populous of reddit likes the post, otherwise it would get downvoted a lot or not upvoted much (or both). Aren't you (and others) getting angry at someone posting things that people want? I'm not seeing the sense in that. Maybe you can help me understand where you're coming from because I'm pretty confused.

There's no simple answer. Everyone knows karma is meaningless, but if we are going to care about it, it should be honestly earned. People who "whore" for karma aren't just getting free internet points, they're kind of eroding the fundamental principles of reddit- share cool things with others for mutual education and enjoyment. People who knowingly violate that are just kinda douchebags. Yeah, the thousands of upvotes mean that people (probably new people) want to see it, but if the re-poster is constantly a douchenozzle about it then anyone who is on reddit for more than, say, six months will see reposts of reposts of reposts of reposts (and so on), which is super annoying. So it's good for new people to see or share things that get reposted on occasion, maybe by accident or with the stated purpose of "people should see this again", but when someone does it just for points? No good.

Go to your favorite subreddit. Click "top" (all time, month, whatever). Peruse until your eyes bleed.

Like I said, there's no simple answer. Everyone should see the best stuff, and I don't mean to sound like a whiny bitch but if I have to spend 3/4 of my time sifting through reposts just so newbies can see it that sucks for me. But the point remains- if it gets reposted by someone purely for points, and THAT is why I have to see it again, fuck that; if it's by someone who says "everyone should see this again", or a seemingly genuine mistake, then whatever I move along. The point is, if reposts are totally condoned, reddit slows down instead of stays active.

I had a horrible encounter with one of these... I was probably 11 at the time and I was in Ohio when I spot one of these on a fire hydrant. The poor thing was oozing fluids, half of its left wing was gone and the right wing was shredded. I went over, picked it up, and carried it around with me all through town until we had to get back in the car and go home.

I still feel bad for it... Seeing a beautiful thing like this torn to shreds is heart wrenching.
