I suspect the tang rivets are fake.

[–]Cryptan 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't even look like the tang reaches the first "rivet". Even though others have stated that this isn't meant for cutting cheese, it still is an extremely crappy knife.

[–]thelordofcheese 0 points1 point ago

Look at the pivot point: of course it doesn't reach the first fake rivet.

[–]Jibs117 4 points5 points ago

That knife isnt really used for cutting cheese... more for bread.

[–]Hyper_Fujisawa 1 point2 points ago

Additionally, you should apply pressure to the top of the blade with your other hand, instead of just a shit-ton of pressure to the handle.

[–]teh_tg 0 points1 point ago

This KA-BAR isn't really used for cutting cheese, bread, or any food. But I think it's the least likely to break of any knife I own.

[–]sprunkiely 5 points6 points ago

OK, your goal if you chose to accept it is...

To buy one good chef's knife and cutting board.

My knife of choice is Shun. About $100 but if maintained it will out last you.

And here's a good cutting board for $40. Again if maintained it will out last you.

Quality, over quantity.

[–]Canard427 2 points3 points ago

Yep this a hundred times. I'm a professional chef and people are surprised that I only have 5 knives in my home kitchen.

[–]sprunkiely 1 point2 points ago

What knives do you keep on hand? Or brand.

I my self drop lot on the whole set of the classic Shuns. But I can't live without them. But I have to say a Chef's, Bread, boning, and utility (small soft serrated) knives are the one I use the most.

[–]Canard427 2 points3 points ago

I have Wusthof that I bought when I was over in Germany. Meat cleaver, 14'' chefs, 8'' chefs, Boning, and pairing knife. I have one of those Sysco offset serrated knives for bread and tomatoes. (They're so cheap I just get a new one each year)

[–]sprunkiely 1 point2 points ago

Hmm, Meat cleaver? Do you use that alot?

That is one knife I can say, I have never used. And few people have said they use it like a chef for all round use.

[–]Canard427 2 points3 points ago

I don't use it a lot, but when I have to cut up beef bones for stock, or chop up a turkey/chicken carcass it's great. Plus it looks cool.

[–]Happyberger 0 points1 point ago

Scimitar over cleaver any day, much better for trimming work as you can control it much easier, and can still handle a good hard ass whack when you need to. For cutting larger items anyway, cleaver is better for smaller jobs, but you have a chefs knife anyway.

And offset serrateds are amazing for your average person, can do just about anything with it, won't be quite as neat as what we do but I promise your kids and friends won't notice.

[–]Canard427 0 points1 point ago

Scimitar? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scimitar

The offset is great during tomato season, when I'm slicing them by the case.

[–]Canard427 0 points1 point ago

Damn, thought I was missing out on a cool new kitchen toy.

[–]worst-answer-ever 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure this would fall under the category of "cutting knife."

[–]GDMFusername 0 points1 point ago

Mashing knife?

[–]forshizzle38 2 points3 points ago

Is that velveta? Also, I recommend getting a cutting board instead of cutting cheese at your desk.

[–]remtard 0 points1 point ago

Hard cheese, old chap!

[–]nite_mere 0 points1 point ago

AKA: Never use bread knives to cut cheese.

[–]dermined 0 points1 point ago

I ain't gonna solve your cheap knife problem but I can still help. Get yourself a cheese wire.

[–]Amandrews1313 0 points1 point ago

...or cheese.

[–]Mia_May 1 point2 points ago

i hate it when i can't cut the cheese

[–]sirlurkzalot 0 points1 point ago

I just broke 3 knives in a row last night doing the same thing. First time - funny... Second time - ironic? Third time - I just got pissed and put the cheese back in the fridge.... lol

[–]seriouslyilldothat 0 points1 point ago

Duct tape will fix that right up

[–]andbruno 0 points1 point ago

I like the three rivets pretending to hold the "full" tang. I bet there's a fake metal bit at the back too.

[–]jester0193 1 point2 points ago

Who cuts cheese at their desk?

[–]free2me_ipad 0 points1 point ago

That's not a knife—that's a saw. Use it like a saw and it won't break.

[–]wetbudha 0 points1 point ago

Why are you cutting cheese on your desk? You shouldn't prepare food on the same place you fap.

[–]BTAA4TD 0 points1 point ago

That's not how you cut cheese.

[–]AJfromLA 1 point2 points ago

I guess you could say that knife....

:Puts on Sunglasses:

Doesn't cut it.

[–]joshpatton 0 points1 point ago

You are using a serrated knife to cut through a block of cheese... no doubt you just tried to press it through... you are clearly doing it wrong...

[–]thelordofcheese 0 points1 point ago

The fact that you're using a knife on hard cheese instead of doing it properly by using a wire cutting board hints that this isn't your first ignorant mistake.

[–]SarcasmoPro 0 points1 point ago

You know they say the kind of person that would buy a knife from a dollar store is the same type of person that would cut a block of cheese in front of their computer.

[–]TemporaryThrowAway3 0 points1 point ago

A "cutting" knife? As opposed to ... ?

[–]teh_tg 0 points1 point ago

A jackknife.

[–]heinleinr 0 points1 point ago

I recommend that people do not buy rock climbing equipment from the dollar store either.

[–]beabea51423 0 points1 point ago

Never cut butter with knives... Okay, got it.

[–]mildiii 0 points1 point ago

Did you try heating the knife up first? I hear that works for butter.

[–]ecliptica24 0 points1 point ago

that's a damn steak knife. get a cheese wire thing or a sharper knife.

[–]treydestepheno 0 points1 point ago

looks like you got your money's worth...
