A trailer passing a motorcycle...

[–]ragebird3 68 points69 points ago

Haha. I always feel bad about myself when trailers pass me...

[–]carlosi1 11 points12 points ago

Fucking trailers drive top speed here so it is normal for me.

[–]TheDreadGazeebo 7 points8 points ago

Most of those trucks have a rev limiter that keeps them under ~75mph.

[–]EONS 10 points11 points ago

This video is from russia. I really doubt there are rev limiters on russian transport semis lol..

[–]theraf8100 3 points4 points ago

It's not a rev limiter that does that. It's a governor)

[–]TheDreadGazeebo 0 points1 point ago

ah yeah. that's what i meant.

[–]carlosi1 3 points4 points ago

The fastest we are allowed to go here is like 40 mph without getting a ticket, fucked up huh ?

[–]hiiammaddie 1 point2 points ago

I had to drive home with a mattress on my car, and I played the how many semis are going to pass me game. 12. I think I won.

[–]ragebird3 1 point2 points ago

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who plays that game!

[–]DoggleDZ 17 points18 points ago

If the bike is a 250cc (given the extra passenger and possible wind) it may well only have a top speed of 60 mph.

[–]Kensin 14 points15 points ago

That's my guess. That bike was going too slow (although at least they were in the right lane for it) and so the truck went around them. The truck probably should have moved over sooner once he realized he was gaining on them, but he also didn't even use a turn signal, so either the truck driver really wasn't paying attention or the bike slowed down suddenly.

[–]theraf8100 0 points1 point ago

Around me (near Chicago) Bikes do ten under the speed limit like it's their job. They also hardly ever do anything close to a consistent speed.

[–]elduderino88 44 points45 points ago

Source video It's not clear if the driver missed the bikers or not.

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 16 points17 points ago

I don't think he hit the biker. When he veers to the right of the biker, it may sound like the car skims the bike, but I believe that is just noise from the car going onto sand/dirt. I don't know if this is what made you think he hit them.

[–]Torandi 5 points6 points ago

Something that always amazes me with these videos is two things: * How comes there was a camera on filming, do they always film their driving * Why would you post a video like this where you clearly look like an asshole on the internet?

[–]laziestbarnacle 2 points3 points ago

As for the camera, if this is indeed from Russia, I hear it's pretty common over there so that you have footage to prove your innocence in a crash so your insurance pays up.

As for the asshole bit, I'd say the truck driver is more at fault here.

[–]MendedSlinky 10 points11 points ago

I disagree with you about the truck being at fault here. The truck was simply passing a slower driver and got over with plenty of space. The driver with the camera however just had to keep passing. The thought didn't even pass his mind that there was a reason the truck was getting over.

[–]rennovak 3 points4 points ago

First he passed a car on the right (which is not allowed) and than proceed to drive at high speed without even concentrating? If he had been looking and concentrating on the FAST driving he would have seen the truck's intention to change lanes, but no. He didn't even try to break or stop or whatever.

[–]laziestbarnacle 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, might've been, I read that swerving more as a panic reaction due to the rather large difference in their speeds. Sure, he'd have been better off if he'd just braked. Someone also said the truck didn't signal. Hard to make out in the gif, maybe it's visible in the video.

[–]Curtor 74 points75 points ago

Not sure what he expected to eventually happen with his driving.

1) Travelling way faster than the flow of traffic.

2) Took way to long to figure out the trailer was switching lanes.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 63 points64 points ago

3) Passed on the right.

[–]Impstrong 28 points29 points ago

I kept trying to think that this person was just trying to avoid hitting the truck by moving to the right, then after watching the video and seeing the other car she passed on the right and also seeing that there was no braking while moving over to the right leads to one conclusion, this idiot should not be driving.

[–]Curtor 4 points5 points ago

Honest question: What do you mean by "...the other car she passed on the right"? There is only the car the camera is in, the trailer, and the bike. Are you referring to the bike?

[–]Impstrong 19 points20 points ago

[–]AndroidHelp 0 points1 point ago

The source video says it (the video) was in Russia.

[–]andrewsmith1986 342 points343 points ago

He looks to be going quite a bit too fast.

[–]BionicJuice 81 points82 points ago

No kidding. I bet someone more intelligent than I could calulate his speed based on the white lines or the striped signs.

[–]scy1192 291 points292 points ago

It takes 10 frames to pass the length of the semi. This site says that the max length of a trailer in Ohio is ~53'. It also says the cab is 156" (or 13 feet). That makes the total length 66 feet in 10 frames. I timed the GIF at 9 seconds, and since it has 150 frames that would make each frame 0.06 second.

10 frames * 0.06 seconds = 0.6 seconds. 66 feet / 0.6 seconds = 75mph in excess of what the semi was doing. Being a rural highway, the truck would probably be doing 65mph (maybe 70) which would make the car's speed ~140mph (225 kph)

so yeah there's your scientific wild-ass guess.

[–]LeanBean17 111 points112 points ago

Really? 140? That seems a bit much...

But hey I ain't gonna argue. You keep doin' those sexy calculations, scy1192.

[–]WalterFStarbuck 52 points53 points ago

That's what happens when you try a WAG (Wild-Ass Guess). Estimating things from video in this way is a valid method, and I think scy1192 has done about as good a job as one can hope for just using a gif.

At any rate, the method does invite significant error, especially if the camera wasn't operating at a fixed frame rate and due to the low number of frames. I'll bet 120 mph or more is accurate though.

[–]xrelaht 3 points4 points ago

I would've guessed 120, purely based on how fast he appeared to be approaching the truck.

[–]theraf8100 0 points1 point ago

I don't know, he was coming up on vehicles at highway speeds at a very fast rate.

[–]lurky_lurky 84 points85 points ago

Scientific wild-ass guess - the original swag.

[–]Vitaminpwn 11 points12 points ago

Never change.

[–]greatgerm 15 points16 points ago

A better way is to count the stripes. There will be some minor variation, but they are usually 10 feet long with 40 feet between (similarly, in metric countries they are usually 3 meters long with 12 meters between). I picked the spot where it looks like the driver was at speed and counted 21 stripes passed in 7.3 seconds.

If we're talking feet then 10 * 21 + 40 * 20 = 1010 feet / 7.3 seconds = 138 ft/s (approximately). This is approximately 94 mph (151 km/h).

If we're talking meters then 3 * 21 + 12 * 20 = 303 meters / 7.3 seconds = 41.5 m/s (approximately). This is approximately 149 km/h (93 mph)

EDIT: I used the source video for my timing.

[–]Kimano 1 point2 points ago

That seems way too slow for the speed he passed that trailer in.

[–]greatgerm 7 points8 points ago

Not really, those people that seem to whiz by you on the freeway are likely only going about 5-10 mph faster than you. If the trailer was going 65 mph and the car was going 94 mph it would look very much like this.

[–]theillway 9 points10 points ago

Why are you basing it on the length of the truck, a moving object, instead of the white lines on the road? I've think I've read that those white lines are 10' long a bunch of different times, though I can't find a credible cite right now.

[–]scy1192 8 points9 points ago

it was easier

[–]theillway 4 points5 points ago

Fair enough.

[–]_wafflefries 13 points14 points ago

The problem is the gif doesn't behave at normal speed. So if you could figure out the difference in speed of gif vs original film/reality, you could proportionally reduce the calculated speed and I think be pretty accurate.

[–]lordbunson 7 points8 points ago

I came here to say this.

gifs are almost never at original speed - unless the creator of the gif delicately tries to time it - even then there is margin for error.

Also the truck is not a stationary object.

[–]Kimano 1 point2 points ago

Are you sure? That skid looks pretty much like normal time.

[–]Frumbleabumb 5 points6 points ago

I'm not gonna argue with your logic, but there's no way he is going 225. Turn right then sharply left at anything over 170 would flip almost any car on pavement.

[–]jesscoffman 2 points3 points ago

Really? Unless its a high profile vehicle or very abrasiveness surface, I would think a major skid would be the only result unless you are sliding across gravel or uneven lanes.

[–]Frumbleabumb 1 point2 points ago

You can easily tip a top heavy car going 40 if you turn sharply left then sharply right or vice versa. Going 225 and turning right and left like that will easily tip almost any car. F1 cars and NASCAR's flip going that speed

[–]Kimano 0 points1 point ago

That's true if it's a sharp turn and your front wheels dig in, but it looks more like his back end slips out when he over-corrects after dodging the motorcycle. If he'd lost traction before entering the skid, it's far, far less likely that he'd flip.

[–]newerthannewtoreddit 0 points1 point ago

Disagree. I've done 200 kmh and made a lane change like the first lane change in the video (moving left). The second lane change (to the right) probably wouldn't flip it, until he hit the dirt/gravel/off the pavement. If you do this is an SUV, yeah it might flip. In a sports car like a Porsche? Not likely.

[–]Ne0r15s 0 points1 point ago

FALSE: higher speeds on pavement would actually reduce friction causing more slide

[–]godless_communism 2 points3 points ago

Or, alternately..

If you're going so fast that you barely have time to notice (on a straight stretch of road) that a huge semi truck is in the wrong lane - you might be going fast enough to deserve that Darwin award coming at you... like a semi truck.

[–]smittyjones 1 point2 points ago

well, for one, 13 feet end to end. the trailer overlaps probably 8 feet of that, or more. that snub nose cab with no sleeper is probably 5 or 6 feet.

[–]DoofaCling 0 points1 point ago

Thank you priority Peter!

[–]SovereignAxe 0 points1 point ago

Except this video isn't in Ohio, or even the US for that matter. From the video someone posted it seems to be Russia. Most countries outside the us have a much lower upper limit of length for semis, which is why they all have flat noses, instead of long hoods like we see here in the US.

I don't know what the max limit is for Russia, but I can tell you it's going to be a lot less that anywhere in the US, which is going to result in a much higher estimated speed. Otherwise nice math, but better to use stripe length like greatgerm did.

[–]MisterMeatball 0 points1 point ago

Scientific Wild Ass Guess. The only SWAG allowed.

[–]Pack_of_derms -2 points-1 points ago

Your move, theists.

[–]Darth_Tard -1 points0 points ago

I'm confused.

[–]crazyike -3 points-2 points ago

That is good math, however he wasn't going anywhere near 200 km/h or he would have plowed right into the back of that truck before ever changing lanes, let alone the bike.

140, 150 km/h is believable though. Hopefully he crunched the back end of his car after the video ended with him spinning out.

[–]iMini 8 points9 points ago

Why would you change measurements

[–]jtrot91 -2 points-1 points ago

He has to assert dominance over the silly Americans... We are a simple bunch.

[–]CTRL_ALT_RAPE -2 points-1 points ago

what are you? some kinda nerd?

[–]B_S_O_D 3 points4 points ago

He's the physicist Reddit needs, not the one it deserves.

[–]nutfudder -3 points-2 points ago

The original Priority Peter!

[–]YourDoubt 18 points19 points ago

You'd also have to calculate the speed of the gif to real time, original video anywhere?

[–]shortyjacobs 1 point2 points ago

So I guesstimate 3 seconds to pass the truck, which at 66 feet makes for a 15 mph greater speed than the truck. Not all that fast.

[–]syriquez 1 point2 points ago

3 seconds? More like 1-2 seconds based on the video, which would give a range of 22-45 mph faster than the truck. Reckless driving either way.

[–]gimpwiz 1 point2 points ago

Unless he's doing 75 and the truck is doing 45 -- remember, it's uphill.

But in that case he should ease off a bit. Passing someone at that speed differential is always a shitty situation. Even if you're going the speed limit.

[–]syriquez 0 points1 point ago

It would still be reckless. You drive according to the flow of traffic and being that far out of range of every other driver encountered makes this person an absolute idiot.

[–]gimpwiz 0 points1 point ago

Interestingly enough, both drivers could be reckless. Hell, all three! I posit that blame can be shared in this video among each member; the truck was probably going too slow and shouldn't have been passing so suddenly (and not passing at all up hill), the bike going even slower, and this guy too fast.

[–]SanityInAnarchy 8 points9 points ago

And not slowing the fuck down when he noticed the truck was shifting lanes. Honestly, that should be your first reflex, then see about passing him.

[–]omeyy 99 points100 points ago

his own fault for being a dumbass

[–]Lucktar 48 points49 points ago

Basically. It never ceases to infuriate me when people act like this. If you're going to act like a flaming moron, at least do it somewhere where you'll only kill yourself.

[–]theGUYishere24[!] 36 points37 points ago

This is why I will not own a motorcycle, I can be as careful as I can be, but then, idiots like that guy/girl.

FUCK IT!

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 6 points7 points ago

Jesus man, I couldn't agree more. I know someone who is big into harleys, and many of their friends are dead. Granted, they are older, but still.

[–]trilWillem 3 points4 points ago

Extra rules of my own when I ride my bike(Suzuki Hayabusa) :
- Always, always go faster than the flow of traffic, even if it's just a little. Then the chances of getting taken out from behind drops a lot.
- Try to avoid peak traffic as most as possible. I'd rather sit 30 minutes longer in traffic(weekdays) in my vehicle and get there safe.
- Try to stay off the road at night.(other drivers and animals).

[–]r00kie 0 points1 point ago

  • Always, always go faster than the flow of traffic, even if it's just a little. Then the chances of getting taken out from behind drops a lot.

been doing this for years, it really helps.

Another thing I do is avoid hovering along side a car, blind spot or not, some people just don't look before changing lanes.

[–]trilWillem 0 points1 point ago

Yup. I'd rather ride behind the car and wait for a gap to pass then ride next to it.
Never pass a car where it can turn off, sometimes people forget to turn on their indicator or it doesn't work. Happened to a friend, luckily the car was going slow, he tried to pass and the car turned into the side road. T-boned the car, but slow enough so that he was fine.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

The best way to drive is if you're imagining everyone else on the road is out there to kill you. Given that mind set, I could never ride a bike.

[–]MendedSlinky 0 points1 point ago

If I imagined that then I'd be driving with a rocket launcher and blowing up everyone.

[–]kerepek_man 0 points1 point ago

Happy cake day to you!

[–]antlion1337 76 points77 points ago

That asshole needs to slow the fuck down.

[–]feared_rear_admiral 1 point2 points ago

thought the same. the situation was stupid, going at it at full speed is even stupider.

[–]SpankyJones10 29 points30 points ago

Near miss x 2.

[–]solsethop 17 points18 points ago

Press RB for boost

[–]SalemDrumline2011 9 points10 points ago

A near miss is a hit! "Oh look, they nearly missed!"

[–]Pentastisch 2 points3 points ago

I liked when George Carlin did this bit.

[–]Kon_Ken000 0 points1 point ago

This was the first thing I thought of when watching this.

[–]TurbidTwatCocktail 10 points11 points ago

Dipshit driver

[–]Foxprowl 12 points13 points ago

And then the semi came.

[–]Jurynelson 17 points18 points ago

…everywhere.

[–]TheRakist 2 points3 points ago

bum...tis.......

[–]AllianceOfLions 1 point2 points ago

Bum and tits

There ya go!

[–]tatsumakisenpuukyaku 5 points6 points ago

And that, kids, is why you drive at the posted speed limit.

[–]fuckwad76 4 points5 points ago

Who are all of these people with dash cams?

[–]The-Jerk-Store 4 points5 points ago

Russians.

[–]Freemont 4 points5 points ago

The guy driving is one dumb motherfucker; why do people use the left lane? To fucking pass, that's why

[–]Teslanaut 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if he plays/reads/watches Initial D

[–]connorblikre 0 points1 point ago

well he's still not good at drifting if he couldn't pull out of that slide

[–]a_farewell2kings 1 point2 points ago

"Dammit!..OHFUCK!.....shit"

[–]skinniegenes 1 point2 points ago

Close call until he backed it into the guard rail. Then it just became an accident.

Edit: I suppose the save was in relation to the two lives on the motorcycle, not the two vehicles that could have been hit. Regardless, he definitely backed it into the wall hard. No matter how good of a driver (you think) you are, there are always other people out there fucking your shit up. Fast and aggressive should stay on the track.

[–]dsac 2 points3 points ago

if he hadn't tried to immediately get back on the road after swerving to avoid the bike, he may have held it together (cars can drive on the shoulder), but the inertia of moving rightleft makes his back end swing out and... that's all she wrote.

[–]BradOShizno 0 points1 point ago

If the gif continued to the passing car hitting the inside guardrail with the rear of the car..

[–]BrokenBelief 0 points1 point ago

This seems like a Stuntman reference, but I'm not entirely sure.

If so, good on you. Great games.

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 0 points1 point ago

I think GTA.

[–]Schobbo 1 point2 points ago

this driver is seriously retarded

[–]sevs753 0 points1 point ago

I'd say its Close call x3. They're lucky they didnt hit the median while spinning...

[–]manton11 1 point2 points ago

He did end up hitting it if you watch the video

[–]sevs753 1 point2 points ago

thanks for the correction. Close calls x2, it is!

[–]InconsiderateBastard 0 points1 point ago

A terrible driver beats the odds x 2.

[–]ItzInMyNature 0 points1 point ago

The driver crashed. The odds caught up to him/her.

[–]Trakis 1 point2 points ago

A: he shouldn't have been going so fast. B: he should have noticed the semi changing lanes MUCH sooner.

[–]JBHUTT09 0 points1 point ago

C: He should have realized the semi was changing lanes to avoid/pass something.

[–]jaynone 0 points1 point ago

I've nicknamed this maneuver "the Ontario" since everyone instinctively pulls to the right to pass anything and everything. It's the most frightening to see it happen at a crosswalk.

[–]langer44 0 points1 point ago

this is what happens when you drive like an asshole

[–]11oops 1 point2 points ago

Fuck that guy. What did he think... that the semi was changing into his lane just for fun?

[–]belizeanheat 0 points1 point ago

Terrible fucking driving. Response to moving trailer took forever.

[–]majinalchemy -1 points0 points ago

Wait. Saints Row reference???

[–]thinsational 0 points1 point ago

was that a 180 at the end?

[–]low_and_slow 1 point2 points ago

And this is why I don't pass on the right.

[–]OriginalSyn 1 point2 points ago

This is why nobody should be passing on the right.

[–]whollo918 0 points1 point ago

100% his fault.

[–]castle_bravo 0 points1 point ago

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don't drive like you're trying to compensate for your micropenis.

[–]shutterhappy 0 points1 point ago

What kind of car is the driver in?

[–]pitlord713 0 points1 point ago

Notice how we all assumed it was a guy driving.

Think about it.

[–]tman44 0 points1 point ago

How to avoid this situation: drive safely, not like an asshole.

[–]Humperofdeadmonkeys 1 point2 points ago

I drive a motorcycle, and this scared me at first... then I thought to myself, There's no way in hell a semi would ever pass me.

[–]Timpetrim 0 points1 point ago

I love watching the compass spin as the car loses control

[–]mathee-us 1 point2 points ago

This driver has very, very poor judgment.

[–]Ne0r15s 1 point2 points ago

i hope the car driver gets horrible horrible cancer. the truck was getting out of that lane for a reason. fucking LOOK where you are going.

[–]MrAwesomepants 1 point2 points ago

if you drive like this, fuck you

[–]JarekBloodDragon 0 points1 point ago

What this didn't show was him hitting the guard rail after ward. He had the slowest response to that truck.

[–]nguyeniethedrew 0 points1 point ago

What an idiot

[–]Double_Che -1 points0 points ago

1,251 downvotes?! What do you people actually want to see!

[–]jambo2011 0 points1 point ago

Wow. I don't know If I would have reacted the same way by trying to get around the obstacles or if I would just have panicked and hit the brakes.

[–]HotwaxNinjaPanther 1 point2 points ago

This guy should never be allowed to own or drive a car. Unless it was a police cruiser dashcam. Then the truck driver really needs to get his shit together.

[–]Jel251 0 points1 point ago

i think close call x 3 he didnt spin out into the rail

[–]Electrikite 0 points1 point ago

This guy has to drive more courteously.

[–]lemonpjb 0 points1 point ago

My father always said, "When in doubt, slow down." It's saved me from tons of bad driving situations.

[–]kingofthekastle 0 points1 point ago

is that a grinder in the window?

[–]somerandomguy02 0 points1 point ago

Pay attention. You could see he was coming over way before the initial reaction.

[–]VinnyPanico 0 points1 point ago

If a tractor trailer moves over, slow down. There's a reason why they're moving over.

[–]PowderedToasty 0 points1 point ago

Stupid fuck thought the truck was changing lanes just for fun. I hate people who put other people's lives in danger because they want to drive like it's a video game.

[–]bubnbob 0 points1 point ago

That's one hell of a driver if he can go THAT fast, dodge a truck and a motorcycle (both in under a second), AND manages to not fall off the road.

[–]Airwarf 0 points1 point ago

I have so many comments and cant choose one, so i'll just say this... Not merica!

[–]HomersThirdEye 0 points1 point ago

why is this guy travelling so fucking fast, not close call, asshole move.

[–]KuDeGraw -1 points0 points ago

A)Motorcycle going super slow B)Trailer passing said motorcycle C)Trailer not checking the mirror before changing lanes D)Car with video passing at much too high of a speed

[–]torokunai -4 points-3 points ago

hopefully this century we'll look back on our unintelligent vehicles that don't in any way understand the road and shake our head.

If every car had passive all-aspect RFID repeaters just that alone could help a lot in making driving easier/safer.

I'd love to work on this problem, the current state of the art it's like how the internet was in the 1970s -- smart cars are going to advance just like that, and have the same real-world impact as ARPANET -> The Internet did.

[–]CorbinStarlight 16 points17 points ago

[–]Epocs 1 point2 points ago

hahaha i got a great laugh outta that

[–]Esperon 18 points19 points ago

What the fuck are you talking about?

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 1 point2 points ago

So what happens when there's an emergency and you need to drive yourself?

[–]AndroidHelp 0 points1 point ago

You take control and drive...

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 1 point2 points ago

Preposterous.

[–]AndroidHelp 0 points1 point ago

I suppose you could just like use hope as an option... hope you don't die, hope the robot doesn't suck your penis with it's robot lips or just hope it keeps its eyes on the road and not on you planning robot rape...

Shit just happens and you kind of deal with it, ya know?

[–]frtox 0 points1 point ago

sounds like you are knowledgeable in this area........

[–]BCBudMan -5 points-4 points ago

Not disagreeing with anyone that the asshole is driving too fast. But the motorcycle should have been going faster. It is much safer for everyone if they drive faster because then people don't have to pass them.

Motorcycles are smaller and less visible which means you need to be much closer to spot them in comparison to a car. Also if you have to pass them it is harder to judge if you pulled far enough ahead of them to move back over because of the large blind spots on cars and trucks they easily disappear in the process.

[–]konakonachanchan 0 points1 point ago

Isn't it a speed limit, not a speed aluminium?

[–]mahmudkips -3 points-2 points ago

srsly dis second reaction

[–]Dynamiklol 2 points3 points ago

I have no idea what you just said.

[–]NONSENSICALS -2 points-1 points ago

if only he'd been a good enough driver to recover his vehicle after that instead of going into a tailspin

[–]serosis -4 points-3 points ago

Clearly the dude was not paying attention, swerving around at the last second like that.

Also, big-rigs, stop being assholes and stick to the slow lanes.

[–]MJZMan 0 points1 point ago

He was sticking to the slow lane, until he had to pass the slower motorcycle. He's allowed to get in the left to pass.

[–]serosis -2 points-1 points ago

No, no he is not. It is my opinion and belief that big-rigs need to stay the fuck out of the way of normal traffic.

[–]MJZMan 0 points1 point ago

No, really, he is. Your opinion and belief differs from reality. Trucks are required to stay in the right lane, unless passing.

[–]serosis -1 points0 points ago

I know, I just wish they did not.

[–]MJZMan 0 points1 point ago

Someones got to get products to markets.

[–]plane_snake -4 points-3 points ago

Stupid trailer, sees a fast car in the rearview mirror and changes lanes as it approaches. This has happened to me so many times, obviously not going that fast, but all that accelerating and breaking instead of just cruising takes ita toll on gas mileage.
