Ripped from Mark of the Wolves.

[–]ruiner9 58 points59 points ago

More accurately, Garou: Mark of the Wolves for the Neo Geo console. Really nice one-on-one fighter with some great hand-drawn animations.

[–]Father_Odin 24 points25 points ago

That's what's always the most impressive to me, even now, the hand drawn art in older video games. I still play Sega Genesis and the "cut scenes" in between play are amazing.

[–]ruiner9 19 points20 points ago

It's a lost art, unfortunately. It peaked when 16-bit games started being released on CD (Spider-Man vs. the Kingpin had amazing animations) but then everything started becoming pre-rendered or FMV and the magic was gone.

[–]jambox888 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, I always hated FMV cut scenes.

[–]Sergnb 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, it has been become somewhat niche. I still love 16-bit pixel art and I am glad the indie community has started to pick up on it. It's not entirely lost yet.

[–]Fidodo 1 point2 points ago

There's still good pixel art on handhelds, although with the 3ds that's probably going to end too...

[–]Sergnb 11 points12 points ago

it's because pixel art is highly stylistic and so it still appeals to our senses even though it's old. Try playing any "starting the 3D era" games. The art directors are the same, but the 3D gives you eye cancer. I don't know how the hell we used to put up with that.

[–]beethy[S] 6 points7 points ago

I don't entirely agree. While my preference does lie with prite based games. Some of the early 3D games did not look so bad. Tekken, Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter(And Racer).. then fast forward a while to some fantastic looking PS1 games like Crash Bandicoot or Vagrant Story. N64 came out shortly after that which has some incredibly beautiful games.

MOST 3D games from the early days did look bad. But some looked quite wonderful and still do.

I do wish that developers ventured more into the 2D look. And not make it all 80s and retro... just .. do something new with it.

[–]Sergnb 13 points14 points ago

the difference here is that you go to the 16 bit era and it was tear-inducing gorgeous graphics all over the place.

Then in the leap to 3D everything looked like shit, no matter how creative the art was. I mean, look at starfox. The art is impecable, but you can't help but notice the ship is a bunch of triangles.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

I could go on with this

Sorry I just love pixel art

Exhibit "are you even trying"

[–]apullin 6 points7 points ago

That 3rd one isn't actually from a game, I don't think ... ?

[–]Sergnb 1 point2 points ago

it isn't. Just showcasing how the art style can really go out of the videogame boundaries and have its own thing, while the 3D polygony look was something just temporary that was there because of technial limitations.

[–]apullin 1 point2 points ago

But it's a little misleading, if one is specifically talking about "8bit" art (a misnomer, I know), or "16bit", since that probably more colors than 16bit can produce, a higher pixel density than could be addressed, etc.

[–]Sergnb 0 points1 point ago

pixel art is often 16 bit since it's the "best" option and low enough in pixels to be considered pixel art and not just regular illustrations.

[–]SkyWulf 2 points3 points ago

Hey. 3D Modeling is hard work.

[–]ruiner9 3 points4 points ago

I'm not arguing that all 3D games are ugly, it's just that they don't have "dat feel" that sprites do. Games like Vagrant Story on the PSX came close to having that level of personality, but there was a HUGE drop in good looking in-game artwork until the later days of the 32bit systems.

[–]beethy[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I can agree with that.

[–]ilikedroids 1 point2 points ago

I had an idea for a 2D fighting game that I think It would be pretty cool. It's heavily inspired/plagiarized from This video.

Basically, you could walk around in the real world as a normal person with little fighting ability; but when you needed to, you could jump into a wall and it would turn into a 2D fighter. It could also have sections involving jumping puzzles, destructible platforms and terrain, being able create weapons, ect.

[–]lovesouljah 0 points1 point ago

There's actually a game that's like that but it's not a fighter; it's called Crush and it came out for PSP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udEywtrjBkw

[–]kg333 3 points4 points ago

Ah thanks. I'd wondered if it was Rise of the Dragon for DOS/SegaCD.

[–]goeraz 1 point2 points ago

yep, it's the Freeman Stage.

Loved that guy.

[–]al0newestand 1 point2 points ago

AH YOU OKEH? BASTA WURF!

[–]Isxida -1 points0 points ago

Play it now on GGPO.com! online matches! :D

[–]Jero79 1 point2 points ago

here the background used in that same clip.

[–]HailYurii 0 points1 point ago

I came here to say this! I imported it for the Dreamcast! Awesome game!

[–]PrototypeKH 0 points1 point ago

I totally thought so.

[–]bp83 0 points1 point ago

Probably my favorite fighting game of all time.

[–]oddvr 1 point2 points ago

I knew this looked Fighting Game-y!

[–]nvrmor 1 point2 points ago

[–]faggotmoose 0 points1 point ago

I love how the music goes from epic fighting game to blaxploitation in a flash at 0:31 in the intro vid.

[–]SuperSaiyanVigoda 9 points10 points ago

Reminds me of Space Quest

[–]lukeman3000 4 points5 points ago

6, to be exact.

Did you know the two guys from andromeda are making a new game?

[–]SuperSaiyanVigoda 0 points1 point ago

Yes it was Space Quest 6.

And ohhhh cool, should be interesting.

[–]Karl_Marx_[!] 0 points1 point ago

This is Mark of the Wolves, not Space Quest.

[–]lukeman3000 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you missed the part where SuperSaiyanVigoda said

Reminds me of Space Quest

[–]BrasaMaan 0 points1 point ago

reminds me of rocky V

[–]MPair-E 21 points22 points ago

Reminds me of Wabash, my favorite street in Chicago.

[–]ZeroCool1 6 points7 points ago

Wabash street is a little too nice for this neighborhood, don't you think?

[–]MPair-E 3 points4 points ago

Hah, well yeah. I was seeing it through a sort of dystopian lens.

[–]lols 4 points5 points ago

Looks more like Lake St. late at night.

[–]Karl_Marx_[!] 1 point2 points ago

Definitely Lake St.

[–]klobbermang 2 points3 points ago

Wabash in 1978

[–]lemonpjb 0 points1 point ago

looks like state and lake

[–]DunKrug 10 points11 points ago

I would really dig a film all done in pixels as well as this.

[–]MisterWonka 9 points10 points ago

Isn't all art you see online made of pixels?

[–]moyerr 7 points8 points ago

Is that bum puking by the dumpster?

[–]Ultramerican 1 point2 points ago

Yes... "puking"...

[–]theguerrillafund 1 point2 points ago

Very curious about this. It's very...rhythmic...

[–]adanvdo 17 points18 points ago

This reminds me of the SNES game, flashback

[–]PlNG 5 points6 points ago

Looks amazingly like Out of This World.

[–]0blomov 2 points3 points ago

IIRC It is the "sequel" related to Out of This World.

edit: Not actual sequel, but published by the same company.

Another World/Out of This World

[–]twinsofliberty 0 points1 point ago

Whats IIRC?

[–]0blomov 1 point2 points ago

If I Recall Correctly.

And I didn't (not exactly)!

[–]redditfine 2 points3 points ago

Favorite game of my life. Literally.

[–]localhorse 0 points1 point ago

It was pretty awesome. I can still pull it up today and think it looks great, mostly due to the character animation. There was also a very specific feel to the controls, it felt like there was inertia when you were running and jumping from platform to platform.

[–]redditfine 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely agree. I wish they'd bring the original to xbox arcade. I would gladly pay 19$ to own it again.

[–]RedTiger013 22 points23 points ago

Looks like infamous.

[–]sps3334 1 point2 points ago

My first thought as well. Looks like a street view of the rooftop-hideout area from the first game.

[–]Argothman 0 points1 point ago

That's the first thing I thought! I feel like I distinctly remember the bridge with the triangular shaped building next to it.

[–]IAmCassetteKid 39 points40 points ago

Arrrrrrrrrnold, - Hey Arrrrrrrrnold!

[–]scottstephenson 1 point2 points ago

Ah here we go, a herewe!

[–]Muzak__Fan 3 points4 points ago

Wow, FIRST thing that popped in my head too. But I wasn't sure if that building was the one in the show or just my nostalgic memories.

Edit: Sadly, it's not.

[–]GiPes 7 points8 points ago

Seen a compilation of this about 5 minutes ago on /r/gaming and peoples were complaining about the misleading title...

And now just 1 picture of it appears and it reaches the front page...

It is also true that it was /r/gaming so...

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/zrekn/i_never_knew_8bit_can_look_this_good/

[–]blacklight_ 3 points4 points ago

It didn't get upvoted because it wasn't an imgur link. That's the only thing that makes the front page on /r/gaming unless it's a pitchfork worthy article.

[–]beethy[S] 2 points3 points ago

Truth be told that link has very little to do with games as none of those animated pictures appear in any video game.

[–]blacklight_ -2 points-1 points ago

They're made in a video game fashion, which is usually enough for a front page post. Because a knitted hat that looks like a videogame character is usually good enough.

[–]remotayy882 3 points4 points ago

Garou: MoW. Awesome background I miss that game.

[–]prometheus1981 9 points10 points ago

Leisure Suit Larry - Gang Rape Edition

[–]big-perm 4 points5 points ago

view this while listening to this.

[–]YouCantMissTheBear 8 points9 points ago

You mean like this?

[–]big-perm 1 point2 points ago

I learn something new erry day.

[–]LeonimuZ 1 point2 points ago

Drive soundtrack is so good.

[–]Lore86 0 points1 point ago

This just needs some '90 videogame music music, like megaman or, something like a Guile theme, but that is kinda obvious because it goes with everything

[–]someweirdguy 2 points3 points ago

off to play Sam and Max

[–]MattindaHat -1 points0 points ago

Very similar to Infamous

[–]coughmann 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Gotham City in Batman Begins.

[–]TehDMV 0 points1 point ago

ctrl+f Gotham upvote

[–]FiresStream 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me abit of Infamous on ps3

[–]ubermex 0 points1 point ago

It looks like the street near your hideout in saint's row 2

[–]cobrasting14 1 point2 points ago

This truly makes me miss all the fun I had making pixel art in middle school, during the dial-up days. So many Mega Man forums that were more dedicated to the artwork than the actual games; are there any great pixel art communities still around?

[–]Bruce_Wang 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Gabriel Knights.

[–]CosmicEngender 0 points1 point ago

Oh, what I would give for games to still be made this way today...

[–]SavageNoble 1 point2 points ago

Every instinct I have is telling me to Lightning Legs that car.

[–]ItscalledCannabis 1 point2 points ago

Amazing pixel art

You know what was more amazing then this? The game it came from

[–]Ceejae 0 points1 point ago

I don't think I've properly appreciated this type of art, seen all the freaking time in the SNES generation, until just this moment. I suppose if you become accustomed to something during your childhood years, you simply take it for granted as if it's just there.

[–]mookler 1 point2 points ago

And the guy getting head behind the dumpster...

[–]statk 1 point2 points ago

Same scene recreated by Noirlac: http://noirlac.tumblr.com/image/25014223865

[–]isevenx 1 point2 points ago

Ugh. Now I want Full Throttle 2 to become a reality.

[–]thepancakebreakfast 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Danger (my favorite electro producer), he made two teaser videos for his EP a few years ago One Two

[–]greeensmaaan 0 points1 point ago

So awesome, especially the second one, Danger is the fucking shit. why arent there games like this being made with great soundtracks?!?! (if there are any, please let me know :P)

[–]deadlybydsgn 0 points1 point ago

I kept looking for a "Biff's" sign, a la Back to the Future 2.

[–]T_Mucks 0 points1 point ago

I was almost sure this was one of the last frames from one ending of the Blade Runner game... but now I'm questioning everything.

[–]BaconZombie 1 point2 points ago

I should really go back and play that game. If only I could find all 600 CDs.....

[–]BrokenLink100 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of the Violence District in LSD Dream Emulator

[–]hachiwo 0 points1 point ago

餓狼?

[–]blank_generation 0 points1 point ago

Looks a lot like Kensington here in Philly.

[–]lukeman3000 1 point2 points ago

i like the al gore graffiti (mid left)

[–]TheSantaslave 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of an old DOS game called Normality.

[–]jediassassin37 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City.

[–]shilling3 -1 points0 points ago

This reminds me of a 90's computer game

[–]incubated 1 point2 points ago

Freeman's stage from Garou: Mark of the Wolves. One of the best fighting games ever.

[–]ems02606 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of 12 Angry Men

[–]break_me_down -1 points0 points ago

This made me so nostalgic just now, srsly.

[–]BlueThundah 0 points1 point ago

What the hell is the dude on the right doing?

[–]fearbork 1 point2 points ago

[–]BLT_with_extra_bacon -1 points0 points ago

Reminds me of Hey Arnold

[–]Spaceoff 1 point2 points ago

These animations are not from a game, and aren't gifs, but I expect that people who enjoyed this would find them interesting.

[–]QuestionAnything 0 points1 point ago

This looks like it would be a great setting for a point and click adventure game.

[–]KidCuervo 1 point2 points ago

If you like that, you'll love these . Lots of different pics with sound, you can even adjust the speed of the animations.

[–]ownworldman 0 points1 point ago

Quarantine?

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 0 points1 point ago

The smoke is what gets me.

[–]antifolkhero 0 points1 point ago

Why is "Al Gore" spray painted on the wall?

[–]glorysk87 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Full Throttle

[–]winterknight 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this

[–]kirizzel 0 points1 point ago

I want to play a game with graphics like this.

[–]tapwater86 0 points1 point ago

If there were about 1000 people on the street I would say this is the most accurate picture of living in Brooklyn ever.

[–]tojal 0 points1 point ago

Westwood Studios used to have some really really good artists, I'm seriously you guys. Of course, this is from the period before they got buttraped by EA

[–]rockoman100 0 points1 point ago

You know, once you get enough pixels, its not called pixel art. Its just an animated gif.

[–]JonBanes 0 points1 point ago

[–]BigCheeser 0 points1 point ago

Anyone thinking of streets of rage here? My favourite game.

[–]ejecto 0 points1 point ago

I want to point, and click.

[–]ACanalPanama 0 points1 point ago

I know it's Garou: MOTW but it reminds me of Streets of Rage for the Sega Megadrive.

[–]mikeyzbizzle 0 points1 point ago

Nothing jumped out and scared the living shit out of me, I'm impressed.

[–]WalrusOnTheRocks 1 point2 points ago

Whoa, just had a thought. Isn't all art "pixel art", just with varying degrees of resolution and image size?

[–]toerag135 0 points1 point ago

[–]SparDanterGilio 0 points1 point ago

Dont know why, but it reminds me of Final Fight...

[–]boot20 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that from Normality (a game from the 90s)?

[–]baileyjbarnes 0 points1 point ago

Am i the only one who was reminded of Hey Arnold! when they was this?

[–]letor 0 points1 point ago

looks like just before the runaway scene in theFifthElement

[–]Neilas 0 points1 point ago

Pixel art is one of my favorite game art styles. Shame it isn't used more.

[–]TheMacPhisto 0 points1 point ago

Looks like something out of Streets of Rage.

[–]ratherlargaborigini 0 points1 point ago

this just made me think is there any other good shows out there that are pixel art besides code monkeys

[–]Ntopper 0 points1 point ago

This would be a fantastic live wallpaper or boot animation.

[–]CLASSYclassy 0 points1 point ago

Wow! Haunting! Cool!

[–]serosis 0 points1 point ago

I feel this is the direction Final Fantasy should have gone after VI. Instead of that fucking horrific chibi-fest that was in VII.

[–]plane_snake 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the place where Mickey's gym was located in the Rocky movies.

[–]yudoit 0 points1 point ago

I spent a lot of time for make a pixel isometric world, interactive, is my hobby on free time, i will finish all the interactions, for now you can see some experiments.

[–]CreaminFreeman 1 point2 points ago

Would be a really nice way to play something like GTA.

[–]iamtakeo 0 points1 point ago

This would be an amazing environment to play a game like GTA.

[–]rismail -5 points-4 points ago

Your username is disturbingly relevant.

[–]criticalnegation 2 points3 points ago

i cried when i realized i couldnt make this my background in vista after researching it for 2 hrs ;_;

[–]Bromazepam 0 points1 point ago

You mean to have it animated? Because to set it with the first frame just right click on it in Firefox, set as Desktop Background.

There's a way to have it animated, but I wouldn't do it 'cause it's bound to have a hit on your performance.

[–]Veldt 2 points3 points ago

If you run a fullscreen application, animated wallpapers become paused as long as you don't tab out, so the performance hit is negligable.

[–]Bromazepam 0 points1 point ago

Cool, I didn't know that.

[–]criticalnegation 0 points1 point ago

yeah, not possible in vista afaik. it was in...whatever windows before that which had the "active desktop" option.

[–]shogunkiller -2 points-1 points ago

does this remind anyone else of GTA4?

[–]fmyasitch -2 points-1 points ago

Funny how this is a "repost" from /v/, do we really need this, reddit?

[–]ChoTai 3 points4 points ago

90% of OC on reddit is a repost in some way from 4chan.

[–]Remikov 1 point2 points ago

repost

from /v/

on reddit

mfw

[–]fmyasitch -1 points0 points ago

Even funnier how butthurt all the redditors seem, after realizing that 4chan was quicker once again...

[–]noisyturtle 0 points1 point ago

Or when 4channers realize this is just one image posted from a link almost 2 months ago on Reddit. www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/wy8v0/nicely_done_sprite_backgrounds/

[–]fmyasitch 0 points1 point ago

Of course, what you don't realize though is that my only problem is why it was posted! On reddit the first time (let's assume that was your link) it was posted because ... ? Someone found something nice, thought he could earn some karma with it. On 4chan yesterday it was posted because ... ? Well if you read it, someone loves pixelart and wanted to see more. See the difference? He loves the stuff so he wants to share it with likeminded people. Now why was it reposted on reddit yesterday (by beethy)? Well (s)he obviously saw it on /v/ (it would be very unlikely (s)he didn't) and thought "this will bring me to the frontpage for sure!" - and (s)he was right.

I hope I don't have to explain why I feel like this was a repost from 4chan.

[–]trpnblies7 -3 points-2 points ago

This is not pixel art. It's nice, but it's nowhere close to being pixel art.

[–]mikek3 -2 points-1 points ago

/Black Francis approves.

[–]rismail 0 points1 point ago

This is from Garou MOTW, more specifically, Freeman's stage.

Freeman was considered low tier in that game, but I knew a few people who were so goddamn good they'd rape me with every char, including Freeman.

If you like this background, you should check out all the bgs in that game, as well as Last Blade 2. Both those have incredible scenery.

[–]CaptSmithers 0 points1 point ago

Kind of reminds me of Half-life.

[–]SergioSF -2 points-1 points ago

Final Fight nostaliga

[–]fullcircle_bflo -1 points0 points ago

Its crazy to me that this is how video games used to be made.

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd -2 points-1 points ago

Isn't all digital art, pixel art?

[–]megadeus 2 points3 points ago

The term "pixel art" refers to art in which pixels are manipulated on the individual level and careful decisions are made as to the color of each pixel.

While digital art is displayed using pixels, the important distinction is the creation: does the artist use digital smoothing techniques or control each pixel one-at-a-time or in small groups?

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 1 point2 points ago

Oh I get it. Thanks for the explanation.
