    Listen to a full album. Put aside image and listen to born this way. Sure, the hits can be odd. Alejandro is fucking stupid but the album is an art piece marketed as a pop album. Gaga is a rare talent warped by what is necessary to catch public attention with a little but of a god complex thrown in.

    I like her music as Stefani Germanotta better but enjoy seeing where her career goes. Her next album is supposed to be even more artsy than the last though so buckle up.

      ke$ha did it backwards, though. rather than using the gimmick as a launchpad to introduce people to her wit and talent, her gimmick required hiding that wit & talent (behind a skanky image and over-produced auto-tuned sing-talking) and now she's a slave to her gimmick - she can't just show up in a pantsuit playing jazz piano to prove herself, it doesn't mesh with her image. gaga's schtick was all about how "weird" she was, and she gradually got to a place where that "weirdness" meant stripping away everything but a piano and her voice so that you noticed "oh hey, there's actual substance there."

        I don't understand people. I always assumed that the reason people didn't like pop stars was because they didn't write their own music, and relied on somebody else's talent. Then along comes Lady Gaga, who was well publicised as having been that talent for many pop stars, now writing well crafted, catchy and witty pop songs for herself, with a great singing voice, and she gets written off as talentless until people hear an acoustic song? What's the deal? Somebody isn't talented unless they are making the type of music which you want to listen to. Why do people love acoustic covers of already great songs so much? It hasn't been magically made more authentic. There's only so much you can do with a guitar and a larynx, and none of it is particularly interesting at this point. I mean, Bon Dylan pretty much took that artform to it's peak decades ago, and even he knew when it was time to branch out and go electric. I'm not saying everyone has to love the music of Lady Gaga, but people shouldn't be so pigheaded as to deny obvious talent just because it isn't boring.

        Because this is Reddit's knee-jerk reaction to a famous female pop artist: She must not write her own songs because she does pop, she must be talentless, her songs are stupid bullshit and lack substance because she does pop, she's an attention whore, she's annoying, she doesn't deserve to be famous, etc... I saw this video of pre-Gaga playing piano at the club two years ago, and this was the same result.

        Case in point, look at all the fucking morons who took Nicki Minaj's line about being Republican, voting for Romney, and lazy entitled people ruining the economy completely seriously. There is a significant number of users on here that are so insecure that they immediately become butthurt when they perceive someone as undeserving of their much more interesting lives.

        The problem is that the layers and layers of production make it difficult for casual listeners to recognize the actual musical qualities. They hear a catchy pop hook and then are overwhelmed by the hyper-saturated music. And since so much pop-music production is the work of professionals besides the musician, it's all too easy to write the whole thing off.

        So to your point: her talent is NOT obvious to a casual listener of her biggest hits.

        well the meat was a serious thing supposedly, meant to send a message about how women get treated in the business. Most of her weirdness is her messing around with random props on set combined with some professional skills. Basically, the craziness is them having fun at first, and then it kinda became her theme.

            She is extremely talented and caters to her audience brilliantly. People forget she is a pop music act, her over-the-top costumes and acts are all part of the image she sells and the acts she performs.

            Honestly, she is/was a breath of fresh air after more than a decade of pop music being dominated by the same boring 'sexy' image.

              Honestly, I'm really tired of people constantly hating Lady Gaga. If you actually pay attention to her, she's nothing like Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj at all. She writes her own music, she has a legitimately good voice and she doesn't lip sync, and she designs most of her performances. She's also a brilliant pianist and has been playing since she was 5 years old. No, she doesn't sing the type of music that everyone would like, but why should she have to? This is what she loves to do and she worked very hard to get where she is now. She dresses crazy because she has said she wants others to feel good about themselves, to not be afraid to be who they are regardless of how mean people can be.

              Saw her at Twickenham on Sunday. Definitely one of the best live shows I've ever seen, which means she stands up well amongst the likes of QOTSA, Mogwai, Kyuss, Metallica, Arcade Fire, RATM, The Pixies etc. So yeah, she's pretty awesome.

                          It's always seemed to me that the people who upvote and move on are less...I don't know if intelligent, but they dont think as much. It feels like 2 different communities, and the people that come in to comment always are more insightful and open minded and actually think about things.

                          Same thing happens with Kanye posts. Reddit loves Kanye, at least, the commenting part of Reddit. Notice how there will always be dumb swag and yolo and twilight posts upvoted, but this whole commenting section of reddit hate those.

                          Theres definitely a difference between those 2 parts of reddit.

                                    That's the point. As irritating and noisy and frustrating as Gaga is, she's a self-made star. If she were going to be some pre-packaged pinup pop-star like Katy Perry or Britney before her, they would've found a hotter girl.

                                    She's an awkward Italian girl with a big nose, and she made herself into the biggest pop star on the market by sheer creativity and love of glam.

                                    I don't like her work, but you gotta respect that.

                                      I just mindlessly hate her, I know she's talented, but I can't stand that Warholesque façade, her claiming to be some sort of high art performer, while sounding exactly like any other pop artist out there, her music has none of the edginess and weirdness as her image. I could tolerate the fame monster, but born this way was incredibly pretentious, her positioning herself as some kind of revolutionist while singing the most clichéd lines I've ever heard ("don't be a drag just be a queen", anyone?), and her little monster manifiesto, talk about delusions of grandeur... What I'm trying to say is that I don't hate her and I recognize she's talented, but I just can't stand her persona. If she put as much effort in her music as she does in her image I'd actually respect her as an artist.
