Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

You just gave me the greatest idea of all time.

A video game....about the Titanic.

You're a passenger on the ship, and you can do things to try to stop the ship from sinking, but it either doesn't work....or it ends up causing the disaster.

I was just about to decide to download it until I saw point and click adventure. I just can't get into those kinda games. :\

You mean 'an international tragedy'

I hate to be that guy, but Call of Duty 2 was released in 2005, and WWII ended in 1945. This is what the tragedy looked like after 60 years.

I'm actually very interested in a game that actually recreates the 9/11 attacks. I realize that it's still very much in "untouchable" territory, but the thought of experiencing the events in the same perspective as Crysis 2 gives me chills. I love games that cause visceral reactions, and there would be no better way to get the player immersed and committed to the storyline than this.

Hope you don't mind waiting another 30 years, at best, for that.

Here's the thing, I agree with you wholeheartedly, but people (admittedly, people that don't care to think it through very far) instantly equate "games" with something that is supposed to be "fun" or non-serious. They think that the only purpose a game has is to entertain, but that's incredibly near-sighted. It's a stigma that you would hope the gaming industry would have shoved off by now, as the film industry has, but unfortunately that's just not the case. That stigma is still there.

Lets imagine a conversation with an average American citizen in which I try to pitch to them my vision of a 9/11 video game:

Me: I want to make a video game where you play as a police officer or fire fighter during the events of 9/11-

Them: That's disrespectful. A video game about such a tragedy? How can you be so callous to the victims and survivors!

Now lets imagine the same conversation where I don't use the term video game:

Me: I want to make a multi-media digital interactive art piece where the viewer is put into the shoes of a police officer or firefighter dealing with the events of 9/11. I want to convey the sense of terror and helplessness involved with that day, as well as give the viewer the opportunity to understand the duties and sacrifices that these individuals made by dealing with these situations themselves.

Them: That sounds like something that could be really compelling. I think it would really help people better connect with those events.

So yeah, "video game" as a term has a stigma associated with it. Unfortunately its not just "outsiders" that have perpetuated this stigma, but developers and publishers as well. We haven't done a particularly good job as a community or an industry of dealing with touchy material, so it's not like we're blameless in this.

Yep, video games are still perceived as "fun" and "entertaining", as you've said. There are certainly quite a large number of fun and entertaining games, just as there are tons of fun and entertaining movies. These adjectives do not define the medium, though. Video gaming isn't a genre; it's an art medium.

Dude, America kicked ass in WWII. We look back on that shit proudly.

[–]BigDaddyDrexx 2 points3 points ago

D-Day was an allied victory and one of the first ones involving US troops in WWII. Definitely a proud moment in US history! Sure, people lost their lives/loved ones, but such is war. If this is a post trying to point out the commercialization of games about war, there were plenty of games doing it before and after CoD2.

[–]TheRaymac 1 point2 points ago

It's only a tragedy if you were German.

[–]turnleftdale 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember the Pearl Harbor attack being in CoD2.

[–]HooliganBeav 0 points1 point ago

Not sure how anyone sees the Normandy Invasion as a tragedy. It was a great battle that began the liberation of millions in Europe.
