Usually it's a sign that it's fake.

I never tell a person that I don't know, "I DON'T KNOW YOU!" if I talk to them. That's something that is said in a book or movie to clarify things. In Facebook posts, it's usually for some extra comedic effect. "If she didn't know him, it would be even funnier! Let's have her say that!" kind of thing.

Uhm.. Incorrect. You may not know this kind of people but I've meet a lot of people who will accept any request, and will often times add a lot of random people because they want a lot of friends on facebook. So this is quite possible.

I'm not saying this is not fake. It might be, but it's certainly not unrealistic.

I'm not disputing the part where people add strangers. They just don't tell the strangers that they are strangers. I never tell my dad that he is indeed my dad. It's just for narrative purposes.

It just feels fake to me, but you're right: I would say a good proportion of people on FB add any and everyone. One of the girls I know adds everyone from her friends' friend lists and if they accept she goes on their friends' friend lists. Long story short, she has something like 800 friends and knows maybe 20 of them whereas a sadsack like me has about 15.
