I think the real question here is, who would buy a $97 dollar shirt?

[–]RoastBeest 3 points4 points ago

After the transaction, your folks each have an I.O.U of $49, totalling $98. You have a $97 shirt and a dollar bill, also $98. The balance sheet balances. The trick of this (and others like it) is that the $1 is added on the wrong side of the balance sheet.

Haha I deleted my post because it was slightly wrong! I should have Edited it, but I am new to reddit!

The Extra dollar is in your hand! You borrowed $100. You kept $1. You gave them $2 back immediately and then intend on paying them another $98 (49/each) which equals $100.

Half of $97 (price of shirt) is $48.50! So give your parents the Buck Fifty, instead of just a buck and BOOM!

it went wrong when you kept the dollar. try giving them 1.50 each. now you owe them 48.5(50-1.50) 48.5 x 2 = 97 = the price of the shirt.

Yeah..I'm just gong to accept that this for what it is because theres no way my dumb brain will figure it out.

The 1 dollar you have is a credit, $98-1$=97$, the price of the shirt, you have to count that $1 as an asset towards the original $100. And yes I have seen this problem before.

[–]currytacos 0 points1 point ago

That dollar doesn't matter.

here 100-97= 3 just like it says but so then you owe them 49 dollars each that extra one doesn't fit in because it is about the two 50s and the two you gave them that adds to 100.

Lot of bad mathematicians on here. The dollar kept wouldn't be included in the total. It'd be 49+49 (the money you owe) + 1+1 (the money you've paid). The dollar you kept is simply part of the 98 you owe... Once you pocket it, you've subtracted it from the equation.

This is a mind trick. Multiple transactions that you assume are all one transaction. It's a good con trick. I've used it to turn 20$ into 30$ when making change with cashiers.
