Simple: you subtract it, not add it, to get the cost of the shirt. They mislead you on what you're looking for.

I was kinda stumped for a second when I saw the problem then I just thought about it a little. Not really THAT hard...

The "your $1" is irrelevant in this case.

The $98 is how much you still how your parents (combined), $100 (the original borrowing amount) - $2 (you've already paid back).

You have to ask what the units of each of the values are in your equation is. In this case the equations looks as follows:

(49$owed + 49$owed) = 98$owed

1$kept

question: what does 98$owed + 1$kept equal?

answer: nothing meaningful

edit: formatting

Lot of bad mathematicians on here. The dollar kept wouldn't be included in the total. It'd be 49+49 (the money you owe) + 1+1 (the money you've paid). The dollar you kept is simply part of the 98 you owe... Once you pocket it, you've subtracted it from the equation.

This is a mind trick. Multiple transactions that you assume are all one transaction. It's a good con trick. I've used it to turn 20$ into 30$ when making change with cashiers.

Sounds like a Romney tax plan to me.

he borrowed $100.. paid back $2.. and owes $98

shirt is irrelevant information.. he kept $98 (97 shirt + 1 himself) and returned $2
