There's a Japanese dish called oyako donburi which is basically a chicken omelette over rice. It means "parent-child rice bowl".

A baby pigeon!

The picture was taken with a stereo microscope by Tomas Pais de Azevedo, a master’s student in evolutionary and developmental biology at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. He incubated the egg of a common chicken (the Gallus gallus species) for about 9 days, then removed the embryo and stained it alcian green dye to highlight the cartilage. Then he immersed it in methyl salicylate, an oil from wintergreen plants which renders outer tissues transparent and makes it possible to see the potential skeleton.

Random fact: The Flu vaccine is produces out of chicken embryo's.

The northern hemisphere takes the most virulent stems from the southern during summer (so it is winter and flue season in the southern hemisphere) and visa versa.

The stems get modified so they can multiply extremely efficient en are injected in the embryo.

After 9 days they take the amnion fluid and select the Neuramidase / Hemaglutinin (proteins) and put it in the vaccine.

They assemble and distribute the vaccine so it is ready early October.

Developmental Biologist here. It's a real image of a 'cleared' chick embryo with the cartilage stained with alcian blue.

When I was growing up, my family raised chickens simply because we lived somewhere where we could do it, and it was kinda fun to collect the eggs and have chickens around for food.

In our first generation, our hens were trying to hatch their eggs, but hens are bitches to each other. They would throw other hens' eggs from their nests to break them. So at one point, we found a cracked egg with a half- or two-thirds-formed chick inside.

It looked a lot like a chicken, but the yolk was more or less hanging out of its stomach area.

We set up a cardboard box with a heatlamp, and a damp cloth, and kept it bundled and warm and about 10 days later, the thing struggled against its little cloth nest and was a living, breathing chick!

It was super cool. She was a runt and never laid any eggs that we knew of, but it was a fun experience to save her from her asshole aunts that tried to abort her.

Eggs sold in stores are unfertilized. It's rare for a major egg producer to even keep roosters, so unless you're getting your eggs directly from a farm there's little to no chance of getting a fertilized one.

Nope! This is obviously treated with alican blue stain to visualize cartilage. You also chemically treat the embryos with a clearing solution such as benzyl alcohol that makes them transparent like glass. They make absolutely beautiful images! =D

That is used to detect changes in compression rates, so it would do nothing for CGI.

ELA (Error Level Analyzer) can prove whether or not something is edited in photoshop, not whether or not it's CGI.

It doesn't even prove that, and it really grinds my gears that it's become so thoroughly and uncritically accepted. ELA is an ad-hoc process that's been dressed up in scientific language despite having no serious theoretical basis or empirical justification, even by its author.

All it does is separate out the high-frequency components of the image (the ones that are preferentially discarded by JPEG compression) and amplify them to make them stand out more. If the image has already been heavily compressed, and then altered and saved with a higher compression ratio, the modified portions will stand out; but the converse is not true at all. It's easy to find unaltered images that show the same effect; it happens anywhere there's high contrast and the original image was saved using a high-quality compressor. Here's an image I pulled at random off of Wikipedia's featured picture list, showing the same "artifacts".

Sorry for the tangential rant but I can't stand the way these sites misrepresent themselves.

Ooh, thanks for the education, I was led to believe (by another post on reddit, no less, about a leg tattoo that turned out to be fake) that any kind of artefacts meant the picture was fake. Although, there's a good chance I simply misinterpreted information that was going over my head!

Edit: This was the thread, I guess I must have read it too early though, there's now no shortage of people explaining the meaning (or lack of) of those analyses!
