I found this piece of garbage on another subreddit (which I still can't tell whether it's satire or not). Anyone want to help me fix it up so it's more realistic? (i.imgur.com)

I suppose it's good to know I don't have any real problems according to the chart. Some of it is just way over the top, but I would not exactly be surprised if some asshat actually believed in all this. Since I found SRS I kind of lost hope in humanity.

I hate the original chart and love that you're recreating it, but please be careful not to minimize terrible things that happen to men in your new version. I don't think "much less likely to even happen in the first place" belongs on the mens' side of the chart under "raped" - it just kind of reinforces the idea that male rape isn't a big deal because it doesn't happen often enough to be one. In the chart, it has already happened, and the chart should address the effects of that, not whether it's likely. All the terrible things that happen to women when they're raped (aside from maybe slut-shaming) are likely to happen to men, too. It's not less shitty to be raped if you're a man.

BTW, I think you are doing yourself a disservice in only using the items on the new chart that are present in the original chart. Even the items on the chart are biased towards a view that says men have it hard. Lots of shitty things happen to women that men don't even have to consider. For example: walk down the street: women - get harassed; men - get treated like a human being. Dress inconspicuously: women - get called frumpy and ugly; men - get taken seriously. Dress up: women - get called slutty or snobby; men - get taken seriously.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that male rape isnt a big deal, I know it's terrible no matter what gender you are, it's just irritating when they act like its as common/more common as female rape. I'll fix that up. Do you think I should just add another row saying "chances of getting raped" or just leave it as is?

I'll probably add more on the end, but I want to get the things on the original chart fixed first

The thing is, the claims being put forward in this chart are so ridiculously slanted and simplistic that it's hard to pithily disprove them. Like the conscription thing. Some countries require both men and women to sign up for the armed forces (like Israel). But many countries also restrict women from certain positions in the military, which slows down their ability to advance.

Or the idea that a man who orgasms and stops having sex before his female partner gets a chance to get off. This can be selfish behavior. But some women also don't require an orgasm to have sex. The chart reduces sexual pleasure to orgasm, which is a stereotypically male idea of what makes sex enjoyable.

Basically, this chart presents a 15-year-old boy's version of gender relations. And besides being sexist and reductive as hell, it also seems to labor under the misconception that gender privilege is merely made up of a series of advantages. Responding with a chart that lists a bunch of male advantages vs. female disadvantages just reinforces the idea that the most oppressed gender can be determined by adding/subtracting the micro advantages and disadvantages while ignoring the macro systems that make such things advantageous or not. The creator of the original chart (or someone else) can simply respond with another list of male disadvantages vs. female advantages and on and on and on.

I think the best way to counter such a list is to talk about overall outcomes for women vs. men in things like work, sex, crime, poverty, etc. rather than individual advantages and disadvantages. For example, no one (in good faith) can argue that women are more politically powerful than men when things like abortion rights are constantly being threatened. Or that women are economically better off than men when we make less compared to men with similar jobs. Getting a free dinner occasionally due to gendered social norms re: dating doesn't make up for the wage gap.

But good luck with this. I shouldn't argue with willing attempts to educate or correct ignorance :)

I'm not trying to warp it back to have it just show it as problems for women though. some of those things are problems for both genders and I'm going to try my best to touch most of the advantages/disadvantages of each (with the help of anyone else here)

Not all of the guys that repost this are sexist assholes either (most but not all) some of them are just ignorant and fixing this chart up might knock some sense into them

Eurgh. I made the mistake of clicking "other discussions". The only one with any significant buzz was a WTF thread from 9 months ago. It's really gross. People keep saying that Reddit has gotten worse over the last few months, but it's full of biotruths, "life sucks for men" and... well...

Not at all. I'm actually trying to 'make the 8,' as in fuck a girl from every kind of race/ethnicity type thing. The fact that this thing assumes that guys wouldn't be interested in a woman's interests/ambitions/pretty much anything else about her besides how hot she is while dating her and that it seems to say that these things make it easier for women make correcting this thing pretty much a lost cause, imo. I would just write, "OMG, misandry do real!!1!" all over the whole thing or something.
