[–]Elementium 68 points69 points ago

Still.. if anyone confronts you.. "whoa whoa buddy, I'm mexican."

[–]scaia 10 points11 points ago

That's true. I'm Hispanic, but some idiot kid in middle school used to call me "Afghanistan" shortly after the attacks.

[–]Elementium 6 points7 points ago

Did you beat the crap out of him?

[–]thirdfounder 259 points260 points ago

sincere question, OP: i presume you're in America. have things gotten better for you and other American Arabs since the immediate aftermath of 9/11? i imagine 2002-ish had to be rough.

[–]Loseit95 176 points177 points ago

I'm not the OP but i thought I'd share my experiences since 9/11.

Since I'm still pretty young (16) people decide to joke about my parents or uncle instead. I've never been threatened or been treated too horribly, only teasing from friends. My friends say stuff like "Why'd your dad do it" or "Sorry the soldiers killed your uncle" sometimes as a joke.

Some people take it too far and say stuff while we are in class. For example, a few years ago we were learning about 9/11 and someone asked why did the terrorists attack the towers and another kid answers "Just ask loseit95's dad". I ended up getting into a fight with the kid (I won) but i didn't get in trouble because he made a racist remark.

Another annoying thing is that it's soo easy to make jokes about me. If the person can't think of a joke, they'll say something like you're a terrorist which is insanely offensive because I lived in America all my life but yet I'm being punished for what some lunatics did.

[–]funketobiasdr 21 points22 points ago

Kids are stupid. It's a sad reality that those are the default jokes because of your ethnicity, but give it a few years, and you'll realize just how immature everyone else in middle and high school really was. Keep your chin up and make something of yourself. Anybody worth knowing or doing business with will respect you for who you are and what you do, not your ethnicity.

[–]Rustyshackleford3427 19 points20 points ago

i am an arab american, and my family speaks arabic mostly. they can speak english, very well actually, but as you can imagine, its a comfort thing talking in your native tongue. immediatly after 9/11, i realized we would get looks, as i imagine asian or hispanic americans deal with on occasion. but main point, the looks have died down significantly since the immediate aftermath. we were never really openly harrassed by anyone. kids in school threw insults around, but i got over those quick. kids are kids.

TSA are still dicks tho, we are all terroists to them. thatll never change.

[–]Shadft[S] 388 points389 points ago

I think you would be genuinely surprised to find how fickle people are around here. I think we get it worse depending on skin tone or what is going on in the news about Iran or anything even remotely Middle Eastern at the time.

My honest opinion is that it has probably always been shitty to not be white, but I think the hate has died down a bit since '01 for sure as emotions have settled and no longer cloud judgement as heavily as they once did.

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 216 points217 points ago

As a "white," arab, I can pass for Arab, White, Jewish, or Chaldean. I have had no problems because of that.

[–]Shadft[S] 644 points645 points ago

Life Pro Tip: Choose white!

[–]007T 199 points200 points ago

And inherit coal!

[–]SexClown 149 points150 points ago

Coal up, delete coalbook and hit the coal mines.

[–]DryApplejohn 29 points30 points ago

Apparently it never gets old. Every time I read this I laugh more than the last time.

[–]_under_scored_ 8 points9 points ago

Apparently it never gets coal'd.

FTFY

[–]BanglaPP 53 points54 points ago

I get that reference. I GET IT.

[–]BICEPS 25 points26 points ago

I don't. Would you mind to explain?

[–]BanglaPP 111 points112 points ago

Australia's richest women, Gina Rinehart, recently went on record to say Australian workers earn too much. She also said Australia needs to lower its minimum wage and/or import workers from poorer Asian countries. She became so rich by having inheriting her father's wealth in coal/mining industry. It's a well-known fact that if you're rich you don't have to deal with stereotypes and racism. The premise of "Life Pro Tip: Chose white!" and "And inherit coal!" is that if you are white and inherit wealth, even if you are Bin Laden incarnate himself, you would be able to avoid stereotypes and racism.

I hope I was able to explain this properly to you. If you have more questions and/or comments, please PM me or leave a reply here. Thanks. Until then have a good day.

[–]TehKarl 67 points68 points ago

Look at you. You're useful.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 17 points18 points ago

And without a relevant username, either. Truly amazing.

[–]MidgetRodeoClown 46 points47 points ago

What's the conversion rate on white? I'm willing to sacrifice a few shades for some rhythm or dancing skills.

[–]MrConfucius 181 points182 points ago

As an arab looking Indian, I pretty much get accused of terrorism by a lot of people.

And my uncle being Sikh around that time, people would throw their drinks at him from their moving cars.

9/11 changed my life. I lost a lot of friends, and I will never, ever look at a lot of people the same again.

I've made it a personal goal to prod out people who are racist/discriminate on other things (sexuality, class etc.) and confront their horrible, irrational trains of thought.

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 64 points65 points ago

Dang. I'm sorry to hear that. It really sucks that others get the brunt of this while I get off scott free because my skin is a little lighter - it's not right.

And as a Sikh, I'm guessing he wears the turban, which of course is a huge bulls-eye target for racist bigots. Thank God you got those losers out of your life, there's much better people out there for you to be friends with than people who hate and discriminate. Also, it must have taught you a very valuable lesson... so if anything, out of the bad comes good.

[–]MrConfucius 52 points53 points ago

Yes he does.

It's just sad seeing people force-fed ideas till they're bloated with a bigot ideal because they think it's helpful.

It scares me seeing the hate jump from one thing to another.

I've had to defend my gay friend from being gaybashed, and that shook me awake on how this is JUST another form of discrimination.

9/11 taught me to think critically about things and to not jump the gun.

[–]joggle1 24 points25 points ago

The day after 9/11, I remember passing a Sikh who was wearing a turban heading to the nearby university campus. He looked nervous as hell. I then realized he was probably worried he was going to get lumped in with the terrorists by idiots, despite being about as polar opposite to the terrorists as possible.

[–]MrConfucius 16 points17 points ago

I carry a knife whenever I go out just from worry that someone's gonna try a hate crime on me. It's harrowing.

[–]BananaVisit 10 points11 points ago

I am sorry you have to go through that but unless you are properly trained in knife fighting techniques I strongly suggest you never pull one out in a fight. You will just end up getting yourself killed.

[–]MakeFunOfMyStupidity 8 points9 points ago

I thank the lord every day that nobody can even partially identify my racial makeup.

/half Indian

[–]MrConfucius 11 points12 points ago

If you're a female, I've actually considered half indian/half white girls just about the hottest combination I can think of! If you're not, just tell them you're Mexican. Everyone looks Mexican.

[–]MakeFunOfMyStupidity 13 points14 points ago

People's assumption of my race is totally dependent on the race of the person observing me. Whites, Hispanics, and Asians seem to find Portugese (or perhaps Spanish) to be the most satisfying answer. Turkish, Armenian, and Iranian people think I'm Iranian. Blacks are dead set on calling me white. European whites lean more towards Greek. I did get Mexican a lot when I visited Alabama.

[–]NightOfTheHunter 8 points9 points ago

When I lost half my friends for dating a black guy many years ago, I figured it was no loss. Just weeding out fakes. As for the discriminators you confront, go get 'em!

[–]Delta_6 81 points82 points ago

How does that train of thought go?

"Hey! Look at his skin, he must have done 9/11!"

[–]Mephistophellatio 66 points67 points ago

Yeah, I've always been confused on that point myself.

Like, do these people think that every Muslim or darker-skinned person of vaguely eastern ancestry is responsible for a little bit of 9/11? Like, every Muslim got an Islam Point that day so now they're all to be held accountable? It just doesn't make any sense.

[–]Ron735 36 points37 points ago

It doesn't help that the media makes it seem like every Muslim is a terrorist.

[–]Mephistophellatio 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, I think there was a lot of racial politicization, especially nearer the event.

[–]InterstellarPancake 56 points57 points ago

As an arab living in Alberta, Canada, from my perspective it seems that the people that think this way believe that Islam, a religion/thought process/way of being fundamental to Muslims, revolves around a false teaching that America is evil, and that freedom is "haram".

Because of this, I would imagine that those people assume that arabs are prone to being violent, and that given the opportunity will exact their "revenge".

Unfortunately the only way to dispel these thoughts, if they can ever break free of their prejudice, is for them to visit the middle east and experience a culture that revolves around Islam. They're not going to find utopia, far from it, but at least they might see that people are just people — just as flawed, just as ambitious, just as struggling.

[–]Mephistophellatio 22 points23 points ago

And that's the most important element in any discussion, I feel. To acknowledge that everyone is a human being so we all start with at least one thing in common. Nobody seems to remember that anymore.

[–]FusionSaint 22 points23 points ago

It's the same reason why every black person will rob you, every Mexican is lazy etc etc etc etc etc. People who are racist are racist because they are. There is no logic to their racism. So Yes. Every Muslim got a point that day and they are all on every racists shit list. It's never made any sense and will continue never to make sense but people will continue hating other people because of their race and religion. I mean fuck, there was a post on reddit during the Olympics about tweets talking about how those "goddamn japs finally got what they deserved from pearl harbor". So not only is it illogical it's long term.

[–]ttw06 23 points24 points ago

i think a lot of racism has to do on where you live, (im asian) i went to a house party at ohio state university a couple years ago, most of the people at the party were from a small town about an hour outside of columbus and the whole night they were making snarky jackie chan comments, it was pretty annoying. but living in tampa and los angeles, i've experienced little to no racism....

[–]whatyouknowmane 20 points21 points ago

Iranians arent Arab.

[–]BanglaPP 33 points34 points ago

Not Arab. I am Muslim. I kind of look Mexican. I wasn't harassed. I live in a pretty big religious city in South. For some good reason, things weren't so bad here for Muslims after 9/11. As far as I knew. We did get brown bags of poop in front of our mosque. But that made us laugh more than it made us feel scared or persecuted.

[–]medgirllove101 53 points54 points ago

As an Arab woman who was born and raised in the U.S., things haven't gotten much easier IMO. Things are way worse for my Muslim friends though. I was raised Christian and when people hear this they don't believe it; so many automatically think Arab=Muslim and then Muslim=Terrorist. The prejudice is so blatant that many of my Arab buddies refrain from even writing Arabic as one of the languages they speak on a job app. It's sad and frustrating.

[–]1gnominious 26 points27 points ago

I'm half Mexican, half white, and a little Cherokee. I had a beard and long hair which didn't help, but I wasn't going to cut them. Unfortunately in backwater Texas I was the closest thing to an Arab they had around. Apparently racists aren't that picky but you can get out of a fight by speaking proper English and convincing them that you're just Mexican. You still get glared at, yelled at, and the occasional object thrown at you but you just deal with it and keep walking. The worst was getting a beer bottle thrown at me from a passing truck as I was walking down the side walk. I could have chalked that up to coincidence if they hadn't called me a sand nigger.

After about 2-3 years it started settling down. Granted at that time I also moved to NH where I didn't heave any real problems. I'm back down in Florida now and it's not any worse than pre-9/11. Nobody is overtly insulting me anymore. Just the occasional stink eye, but that could be because I'm not 100% white or have long hair and a beard. That being said I'm going straight home to hide under a basket.

Overall I think the entire episode is a bit funny. Here I am getting harassed for something that I am no way even tenuously connected to. I'm not the right race, the right religion, from even the right region, and I'm actually half white. A point I stress because every problem I had was with a white person. It's especially funny when you consider that because of my mixed heritage I'm result of the races getting along.

[–]I_have_a_Secret 31 points32 points ago

I have a friend from Saudi Arabia in UK who lived in the US from 2000-2009 and I have asked him this exact same question before.

He says that the immediate time after 2001 was very horrible for him and it felt almost like being persecuted. More importantly he was from a different part of the world than the alleged terrorists so it made no sense to him. He would get called out in public, general looks of disapproval in public places and he had to pretty much ignore as much as he could while still getting in a couple of arguments.

After 2003-2008 though things gradually turned around for the good. He feels that the more time is passing the more people are understanding the entire situation. He also says that after all the wars going on between the US and Afghanistan/Iraq, some of the locals actually feel at fault for their country constantly attacking others so they are more than just good to him. There are still those blatantly ignorant people but they are decreasing day by day.

[–]Mephistophellatio 1737 points1738 points ago

I interrupted my Aristotelian logic class by laughing at that, and the professor asked me what was so funny. Without thinking I just said "9/11," and now everybody's uncomfortable.

10/10, OP. thank you.

[–]Renmauzuo 563 points564 points ago

And I just started laughing at my desk. Fortunately, nobody asked what was funny.

[–]Mephistophellatio 238 points239 points ago

What was funny?

[–]Feed__Me__Downvotes 313 points314 points ago

Two cats, a basket, some arabs, an airplane, two towers, and a day which the Silver Side Up album by Nickleback was released...

[–]Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones 72 points73 points ago

Slayer released God Hates Us All on 9/11/01.

[–]binarymelon 141 points142 points ago

...and a day which the Silver Side Up album by Nickleback was released...

I'm sad to say this is why I'll always remember that 9/11 was on a Tuesday.

[–]The_Real_Platypus 27 points28 points ago

You need to move on from the Nickelback release date. Stop thinking about it.

[–]TeethofBusey 78 points79 points ago

I'll always remember it was on a Tuesday because I was sleeping during my long break between classes, my mom woke me up and said "we're under attack, people just flew planes into the WTC towers." I acknowledged it and went back to sleep. I feel bad about that now, not that there was anything I could do except for watch the news.

[–]Despierten 40 points41 points ago

I was in DC, waiting for my friend's car to be repaired. Some guys were looking up in the sky and were scared. I laughed and asked if they were looking for UFOs or something. They all gave me the evil eye and one of them told me he had family in NY. I felt threatened so I went inside and saw the news.

[–]Zephoma 20 points21 points ago

No one gives They Might be Giants and the album Mink Car and credit for being released on 9-11-01.

[–]skottdaman 77 points78 points ago

Nickleback is the Canadian tragedy

[–]ROFLWAWFUL 72 points73 points ago

Never Try to forget.

[–]IchBinEinHamburger 47 points48 points ago

The only Canadians that actually have something to apologize for, but don't.

[–]IrrelevantLeprechaun 20 points21 points ago

Them and Justin Bieber.

[–]themvf 67 points68 points ago

I just started laughing on the toilet. My stallmate asked me what's so funny.

[–]sillydrunkard 75 points76 points ago

There's someone in your stall with you?

[–]Kawaii- 112 points113 points ago

Buddy system, the worlds a dangerous place.

[–]yuruku 25 points26 points ago

It not only applies to women anymore! Now come, let us hold hands and take a jolly jaunt to the restrooms!

[–]Zombie_Feeder 25 points26 points ago

Yeah, doesn't everyone have a poop partner?

[–]advillious 186 points187 points ago

I just started laughing in my Gov class at this comment. But everyone thinks its because my prof just searched google for yahoo.

[–]Mephistophellatio 247 points248 points ago

To be fair, that is hilarious.

[–]advillious 45 points46 points ago

Everyone was chattering, then when they noticed what he was doing it just got dead quiet and everyone just looked around at each other like "what do we do?"

[–]Mephistophellatio 95 points96 points ago

Like, the "Internet generation" twenty-something in me thinks it's funny, but the avid computer user and unofficial local tech support guy in me finds in infuriating that people like him are allowed to use computers. So I'd be torn between laughing at him, and taking the mouse away and telling him to go sit down while I uninstall ALL OF HIS FUCKING TOOLBARS.

[–]Seakawn 35 points36 points ago

Good lord. Grandmother and grandfather recently asked me to help with their sound on their computer... I look up a quick fix on Google, but only after maneuvering away from all the toolbars that took the top half of the screen.

"Hey. Do you use any of these?" "No. They just randomly come up." "... yeah, randomly..."

You know how shady sites with download links often have 5 parallel download links that are ads? Yet, if you're experienced enough, you can't be fooled by any of the ads and you know what to look for as the legit link. You get to a point of knowledge to where you can't be tricked.

Yeah, they always download crap from every single download ad link on all the sites...

I mean I don't know how to blame them. I'm 22 and have been on the internet for over half of my entire life. It just kinda popped in their already developed world and they just have partial experience with the things. Still annoying though...

[–]pathogenXD 26 points27 points ago

Just get some adblock action going on their computers! It will drastically reduce the availability for them to get spam.

[–]Goldreaver 18 points19 points ago

And then used yahoo to search for bing?

[–]the_tch 146 points147 points ago

Shouldn't the OP get 9/11 instead?

[–]Mephistophellatio 23 points24 points ago

Amazing

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 74 points75 points ago

Your Aristotelian Logic class, huh? Well don't you sound sophisticated!

[–]Zelius 67 points68 points ago

Meh. I also took Aristotelian Logic. It doesn't get much more sophisticated than "all men are mortal, Socrates is a man, therefore Socrates is mortal." And it was boring as fuck.

[–]patefoisgras 42 points43 points ago

Who told you Formal Logic was interesting? You should get your money back.

[–]javastripped 21 points22 points ago

Are you Arab? If so you'd be so screwed.

[–]10eighty 60 points61 points ago

ITT: Things that didn't really happen.

[–]WoadRaider 21 points22 points ago

People lie on the internet?

:O

[–]whailbait 18 points19 points ago

At my high school at the end of the day today we had the head of the JROTC department read off a list of names of people from our county that died in NYC on 9/11. As he was going down the list one of the names was ___ (can't remember his first name) Smallwood. Normally that wouldn't have been as funny as it was, but being such a somber time, it just made it so inappropriately funny, which of course made it even harder to hold the laugh in. I didn't end up bursting out laughing but I suspect somebody may have noticed me snickering every now and then to myself.

[–]This_Might_Help 1942 points1943 points ago

I'm terribly sorry that you have to deal with prejudice like that, but this gif is fucking adorable.

[–]triick 249 points250 points ago

OP needs to stop walking around like that, it's making me nervous

[–]EggfooVA 218 points219 points ago

[–]supersamalander 70 points71 points ago

Looks like Khal Drogo.

[–]stillnotking 16 points17 points ago

Muslims don't bother me; I panicked at the Comic Sans.

[–]Dingo8urBaby 15 points16 points ago

At first I thought he just had an especially pointy chin.

[–]Magnifiscent 10 points11 points ago

Agreed. Maybe if he was less sneaky?

[–]ariiiiigold 62 points63 points ago

I cannot wait until technology advances to the point where we can communicate with cats. Imagine the possibilities.

"Bruce Wayne (the name of my cat), what do you think of this shirt? Does it complement my suit?"

"Yes, yes, it's rather nice. I would suggest the procurement of a bow-tie though."

[–]lovelyfaery 53 points54 points ago

My cat's name is also Bruce Wayne. However, I think his answer would be, "Bitch, I'm sleeping." or something to that effect.

[–]CaseyG 32 points33 points ago

"I'm Catman."

[–]ellyse 15 points16 points ago

I can already communicate with my cats and vice versa. It's quite clear what they want and when they want it.

  • Standing next to water bowl = "You forgot my refill, dammit."
  • Crying at door where I keep their food = "Feed me, dammit."
  • Crying at door where I keep their toy = "Play with me, dammit." (Actually, the same door, but there's a timing difference since they know when they get fed and the meow is also slightly different.)
  • Meowing at me in bed = "No sleep for you! I want attention, dammit."
  • Headbutt = "You're mine."
  • Licking and rubbing gently = "I can see you're having a bad day. Accept my sympathies."

[–]NotaMethAddict 708 points709 points ago

I don't think that helped at all.

[–]jakfischer 448 points449 points ago

If all Arabs were like these two cats, the world would be a whiskery place.

[–]tower1 366 points367 points ago

Obviously you haven't seen their beards.

[–]perkocet 494 points495 points ago

we miss you tower 1.

[–]ninjaturrtle 241 points242 points ago

I think people misinterpreted your comment. Look at the other guy's name guys

[–]yuruku 107 points108 points ago

Woops. I always miss the damn name.

[–]The_Real_Platypus 122 points123 points ago

You had one job.

[–]uneekfreek 50 points51 points ago

Everybody only has one job everytime they're assigned a new one.

[–]AscentofDissent 24 points25 points ago

He didn't pick the best day...

[–]The_Chosen_Redditor 74 points75 points ago

Tower 2 would confirm, but....

[–]DennyCraneDennyCrane 103 points104 points ago

Jesus, what a horrible username for today.

[–]ieatbees 99 points100 points ago

Horrible, or perkocet's other account, set up precisely in anticipation of this moment?

tower1 - redditor for 5 months, 12 days.

perkocet - redditor for 5 months, 17 days.

[–]tower1 48 points49 points ago

I don't know how I could prove this, but I am not perkocet.

[–]CaseyG 81 points82 points ago

I, too, am not perkocet, so I can confirm this.

[–]visavismeyou 58 points59 points ago

CONSPIRACY KEANU!!!

[–]xxxblindxxx 7 points8 points ago

doesnt seem like it was worth it in the long run :/

[–]gsohocki 293 points294 points ago

I am terribly sorry that a very few assholes fucked it up for everyone. I have a very close friend who is from syria and is an excellent example of a good, loving, patient, foregiving muslim man. I hate to think that the attack may prevent otherwise wonderful relationship like this from developing due to fear and misstrust. The world is a harsher place because of this type of attack.

[–]timmojo 31 points32 points ago

This brings up a point that has always bugged me. The opposite of a muslim terrorist is not a "good, loving, patient, forgiving muslim". The opposite of a muslim terrorist is a muslim who's not a terrorist. Even if your friend were a bad, hating, impatient, grudge-holding muslim, as long as he isn't a terrorist, then that's ok.

I'm not taking away from your point above. To me, the fact that many Arabs and Muslims have to qualify themselves as particularly good or peaceful speaks to our failure to understand exactly who these people were who committed the terrorism. The arguments about whether those terrorists were true muslims notwithstanding, it's irrelevant what their religion is/was. There are good and bad people all over the world affiliated with all types of religions. It's the acts of terror that makes them terrorists.

I'm saddened at the reality that people who seem similar to the terrorists from 9/11 (skin color, clothing, facial hair, language, etc) have to act especially pious in order to avoid trouble.

[–]thatmanstan 159 points160 points ago

Honestly reading your comment made me realize that not all of America hates me for something others have done. Thank you

[–]NamelessPurity 138 points139 points ago

Wait, you guys think all of us Americans hate you? That's depressing. I'm sorry.

[–]esvilanova 33 points34 points ago

I had to go to Houston for business a while back, it was my first trip to America and I was so nervous because I honestly thought I would be harassed and treated like crap. I was very, very wrong though, everyone was super nice and even though I got a lot of stares, they weren't nasty.

[–]roffleburger 74 points75 points ago

Come to Canada, we love everyone :D

[–]atl2rva 91 points92 points ago

that's because you're all high

[–]roffleburger 38 points39 points ago

Pretty much lol

[–]FoodBeerBikesMusic 57 points58 points ago

This. It applies in both directions, and, sadly, throughout history, it's been the extremist assholes who have dictated events, and the rest of us get dragged along.

My roommate is Muslim. Known him for 5 years now. He is one of the many that differ from the stereotype which everyone seems to see. He is very open about his beliefs, and provides insight when people ask for it. He is an awesome guy.

Even our more caucasian friends who have known him about the same time, know how to speak phrases in Arabic, because he taught them bits and pieces over the years.

I know when it is Ramadan, so I try not to cook food around him if he is home until til his fast is broken, however sometimes I didn't realize was going to be home and had cooked something anyways. He doesn't care if I cook during his fasting, however I try not to.

Not all Muslims are extreme. Most that come to the U.S come to get away from the extreme stereotype. Some however come over and unfortunately bring most of their traditional ways with them, and they end up being on the news for doing something bad.

Edited: Removed "The exception" as it can be misconstrued depending on how you read it. Replaced it with "He is one of the many that differ from the..."

Some however come over and unfortunately bring most of their traditional ways with them, and they end up being on the news for doing something bad.

To be fair, that doesn't always depend on the extremity of their believes. If a Muslim does something wrong, you can be damn sure his believes will be dragged into the picture, even if they're unrelated to what she or he did.

[–]Daylow 31 points32 points ago

I know. I ran into a Jordanian friend of mine in Wal-Mart a couple of days later and he would not even look me in the face. I just took his hand and held it for a moment then we went on. Neither of us said a word.

[–]Shadft[S] 89 points90 points ago

It almost makes it all worth it, right?

[–]southpaw19711 73 points74 points ago

Dude, you crawl across the floor like some adorable wicker-backed crab and I assure you no one (okay, none of us who are stupid) will care where you're from.

I hate that you feel this way on 9/11, but the imagery I have of you is totally adorbs.

[–]Kniepic 46 points47 points ago

[–]Arienna 18 points19 points ago

My stepfather was a Syrian man and I have a lingering prejudice left over from unpleasant aspects of my childhood. I fight against it all the time... But for now on I'm going to think of this .gif and it's going to give +2 to my middle eastern relations skill checks. <3

[–]PferdloverX3 206 points207 points ago

It sucks that you or your family is treated like that. My father is German and once lost a girlfriend because her parents equated any one of German descent as a Nazi. It makes me sad to know that you have to face such ignorance and stupidity in today's society.

[–]hemmelight 103 points104 points ago

What the flying fuck is up with that? It amazes me how dense most people are. 'Oh that person comes from the same place as the bad people, better get 'em!'

I hate people.*

*Right, even the ones who have nothing to do with this. Reddit's over-react-o-tron sure is running hard today.

[–]melissarose8585 4 points5 points ago

Can confirm. One grandfather's entire family fled Poland in fear of the Germans in 1937 and I would've died for bringing home a guy with a German last name.

[–]zombies_r_us 169 points170 points ago

I'm an Arab american and I have never apologized to anyone for 9/11 and I've also ever hid from anyone just because I'm of Arab descent. We have nothing to apologize for and we don't have reason to hide. I wasn't involved in 9/11, neither was my family or friends. Yet I've been spit on, called "Bin Laden" on the streets of NY, and have been threatened on numerous occasions.

I take the A'sad Abukhalil "The Angry Arab" attitude. Directly after 9/11 he went on Bill Maher's show and schooled all of them, including Maher.

Edited to add all parts of the Politically Incorrect Episode per a request...it's all very entertaining...

[–]technoleak 20 points21 points ago

God, As'ad really had to deal with a lot of bullshit when he went on. I have a lot of respect for what he did.

[–]Fuck_my_username 71 points72 points ago

You shouldn't apologize for 9/11 and most definitely shouldn't be expected to. I'm white and I don't apologize for slavery like some white people feel obligated to; I think slavery is absolutely evil--as I'm sure you view 9/11--but just because people with my skin color were on the winning side of it doesn't make me feel like I owe anyone an apology.

[–]sulaymanf 40 points41 points ago

I'm glad you say that. I've been shocked by Redditors who reply with a demand that I apologize for 9/11.

[–]jerkburger 20 points21 points ago

has that seriously happened? Did you tell them to kindly go fuck themselves?

[–]sulaymanf 26 points27 points ago

Yeah, but it didn't quite get the upvotes I expected.

[–]suck_my_dick_reddit 29 points30 points ago

I would have punched that motherfucker in the face for you if I saw it happen.

I cant stand post-911 racism against arabs.

P.S. Yes, this is user "suck_my_dick_reddit" saying this.

[–]coolman333 9 points10 points ago

Wow . Amazing clip and also great to see bill Maher schooled . While he Has made good points throughout his career, it's surprising to see how he is shouting for war and vengeance in this clip when he acts so morally superior and enlightened now a days. Notice how the prof was the calmest one there despite being verbally attacked by the other guests.

[–]Cynikal818 10 points11 points ago

Don't be sorry. You didn't do shit to us. That video was the first time I cringed at Bill...similarly, I've never wanted to clothesline 3 panel members at once either.

Cheers man.

[–]Amarowar 10 points11 points ago

Those videos made me so angry. "I talked to 10 saudi arabians in the last 3 days and they all said that they would be sad for osamas death" WOW! 10 people? What an obviously not cherry picked and scarce group of people!

[–]AstroFruit 6 points7 points ago

I wanted to punch that loud mouth 'Murica fuck yeah guy sitting next to the woman, way to represent your country.

[–]lillesvin 5 points6 points ago

That was kinda painful to watch. It kinda felt like none of the other guests really listened to him, which is sad because he had some pretty strong arguments but most of them were countered by some bigoted crap.

[–]iGotChubs4You 5 points6 points ago

I hate Bill Maher.

[–]MykoDaShmo 94 points95 points ago

It's like being Japanese on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Or when Michael Bay released that one movie... That guy made middle school pretty hard being the only Japanese kid in class.

[–]gosslot 24 points25 points ago

On trips into foreign countries (US, UK, France,...) there was almost always someone who will call me (or someone I travel with) a Nazi.

But these people are rare and often drunk.

It was really awkward visiting the WW2 memorial in DC...there is even an inscription somewhere for the battle over a bridge. The remaining ruins of this bridge are pretty close to where I live.

[–]SunriseThunderboy 111 points112 points ago

I've got the cake day that I'll never be able to celebrate.

Not complaining, but had I realized it, I would've registered on a different day.

[–]OkonkwoJones 78 points79 points ago

Try having 9/11 as your birthday. I can't register on a different day nor make another account...

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 22 points23 points ago

I know that feel. Happy birthday mate :P.

[–]OkonkwoJones 29 points30 points ago

Happy Birthday to you as well.

People always tell me that it must be a shitty day to have a birthday. I just tell them that it isn't because if I don't enjoy it because of the attack then the terrorists have won.

It also gives me a chance to wear a shirt that says "NEVER FORGET...my birthday". I have yet to make that shirt though.

[–]nib420[!] 108 points109 points ago

i know that feel brother. i'm an arab stoner, and my cake day is 9/11!

[–]jondySauce 52 points53 points ago

White American here. I don't hate you.

[–]Ali921 51 points52 points ago

[–]Domthecreator14 438 points439 points ago

A Muslim girl was attacked at my school by another girl during the moment of silence. Fuck I mean it's a sad day but she doesn't deserve it.

[–]Nate_the_Ace 770 points771 points ago

"...it's a sad day but AND she doesn't deserve it."

[–]andr3y 28 points29 points ago

Are you taking logic class with Mephistophellatio?

[–]javastripped 238 points239 points ago

Did the attacker NOT know what 'moment of silence' means? What a disrespectful bitch.. on SO many levels.

[–]Domthecreator14 106 points107 points ago

Happened in a class down the hall. (im going on what a friend told me) she called the girl racial slurs and started hitting her. The other teachers were trying to play it off as just another fight

[–]xxxblindxxx 192 points193 points ago

please try and report those teachers and the student to whatever authority can help in your area. keeping that kind of ignorance in our schools can only lead to more hate down the road.

[–]Domthecreator14 61 points62 points ago

From my knowledge, she was suspended

[–]jefjefjef 62 points63 points ago

I'm pretty sure hate crimes should merit more than a minor suspension.

[–]mattpsx2 52 points53 points ago

The other teachers were trying to play it off as just another fight

What the fuck...

[–]greatestbob 47 points48 points ago

That's a hate crime, son.

[–]wandering_tourist 45 points46 points ago

We watched the George bush 9/11 interview in class today and some fucking kid had the nerve to say "why are there people crying, they're fucking faggots." ffs I hate my school

[–]theorys 170 points171 points ago

That reminds me of the OKC bombings and how Catholics were getting harassed since Timothy McVeigh was a Catholic. Oh, wait, that shit never happened...

[–]SawRub 80 points81 points ago

I feel horrible that my first thought was that OKCupid had been bombed.

[–]ErgonomicPenisHolder 44 points45 points ago

Not that you're wrong or anything, but let's be fair here - there hasn't exactly been a string of high-profile Catholic attacks in recent memory for people to start making that association. If a few more Catholics did this and proceeded to cite their religion as a motivating factor for doing it, I think it's reasonable to assume many would adopt the same suspicion of Catholics.

Pedophile jokes aren't exactly uncommon when it comes to discussions involving the Catholic church because the association is there, but it's not there with modern-day Catholics committing terrorist acts or with Muslims Imams molesting children.

[–]sulaymanf 37 points38 points ago

I guess if you lived outside the UK, you wouldn't remember all the Catholic terrroists.

[–]--Heisenberg-- 8 points9 points ago

there hasn't exactly been a string of high-profile Catholic attacks in recent memory for people to start making that association.

At least not in the US. The US did fund the IRA though, which performed terrorist attacks against the UK. That funding ended approximately 11 years ago today.

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 60 points61 points ago

I am Arab. I look very white. I live in a primarily affluent Jewish/Chaldean/White area.

Since 9/11/01, I have had no problems with my ethnicity because of the attacks on the WTC towers. I must be one of the lucky ones.

[–]Machine_Man 65 points66 points ago

You MUST live in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 47 points48 points ago

I was WAITING for this comment. Yes, that is where I live. How did you know?!

[–]Machine_Man 37 points38 points ago

I live in a neighboring city. West Bloomfield is known for its rich Chaldean and Jewish people.

And the fact that most people outside of Michigan have no idea what Chaldean means.

[–]HolyHandGnade13 23 points24 points ago

I live in Michigan and I have no idea what Chaldean means :(

[–]asdfcasdf 6 points7 points ago

I live outside of Michigan and, thanks to Google, now know what Chaldean means.

For anyone wondering: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaldean_people

[–]absump 5 points6 points ago

Seeing it several times in this thread, I actually felt a bit stupid for not knowing what it meant. I live in the part of the world affectionately referred to as outside of Michigan.

[–]pack0newports 22 points23 points ago

Whats a Chaldean? Wiki is kind of no help on this saying it is an ancient part of Babylon.

[–]TheKnave 7 points8 points ago

A mainly christian population from northern Iraq. Sometimes used interchangeably with Assyrian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_people

[–]PlsTrollerateMe 23 points24 points ago

I find it amazing how people in other countries, like Loas, who have been bombed and terrorizes by the United States can welcome Americans with amazing hospitality and open arms. Americans seem to be ignorant of the damage we do to other cultures and persecute immigrants from a country that has done harm to us. Disgusts me.

[–]cschema 8 points9 points ago

Not all of us have any ill feelings towards you.

[–]redditshredit 7 points8 points ago

I like it because they're both the same species. Just like us.

[–]UnoriginalMike 20 points21 points ago

I'm sorry you have to feel that way. It's a bunch of bullshit anyway.

I served 3 tours in Iraq an found a love of the locals. Mellow, laid back, sense of humor I eventually started to understand. It's too bad a few nut jobs have all happened to be Arab, which gives the excuse for the media and the moronic to paint all Arabs as nut jobs. That isn't the way of things.

Even amongst the people actively trying to kill us in Iraq, only an extremely small percentage were doing so out of hate for the west, or hate at all. When you live life in a place that harsh, it becomes difficult to not be willing to risk shooting at Americans for the right price.

[–]Cynikal818 8 points9 points ago

...or if they accidentally killed the fuck out of your whole family. Kind of leaves you with some hate and little ways to deal with it except lash back.

[–]I_Key_Cars 17 points18 points ago

Walk proud. Don't let the racist win.

[–]ghettowaffle88 4 points5 points ago

I'm also an Arab and I feel the same way. I got u bro. Im from Lebanon

[–]NotaMethAddict 86 points87 points ago

This is not funny at all :(

[–]Shadft[S] 115 points116 points ago

Haha fuckin tell me about it!

edit: seriously though, it's nice to hear you say that man.

[–]jakemyers7 14 points15 points ago

Do you actually experience a lot of racism? and does it increase on certain days (such as this)

[–]Shadft[S] 36 points37 points ago

I hear way too much inflammatory shit, 9/11 or not.

[–]jakemyers7 5 points6 points ago

where in states are you from?

[–]NotaMethAddict 55 points56 points ago

Okay.

I find it sad that people unfairly profile other people because of an event they had no control over and weren't involved in. I can't empathize enough with you, man.

[–]Schroedingers_gif 10 points11 points ago

Empathize?

[–]NotaMethAddict 19 points20 points ago

Trucking autocorrect.

[–]Wilhelm_Amenbreak 20 points21 points ago

I have been accused of being one of the whitest people on the planet. As official spokesperson for my people, I would like to extend an honorary "bro-fist" and this laurel wreath (you can't see it but trust me, it is glorious) along with out sincerest apologies for the actions that some of the dumbest of our people have inflicted on you. If you are ever in the Indianapolis area, I will buy you a Blizzard from Dairy Queen, you get to choose the mix ins.

[–]WASH_JOCULAR_HUB 16 points17 points ago

As an Indian born and raised in the U.S. I can attest to this as well.

I usually try to hide out too. Unfortunately I mistakenly bought baseball tickets tonight so my face very well be like this all night.

[–]EngagementBacon 15 points16 points ago

Bust out the ole "I'm Indian, not Arab!" T-shirt.

[–]crankypants_mcgee 11 points12 points ago

I am sorry that you have to deal with people reacting to what you look like and associating you with mass murderers. I am sorry that people find it easier to react to fear by lashing out with irrational hate. I am sorry that the actions of extremists have caused you pain in your life. I am sorry that not enough non-Arab folk in this country stand up to this and defend their fellow man.

[–]modernman2 4 points5 points ago

That sucks, I'd like to think we're (all people) are better then that but reality keeps telling me otherwise.

[–]manuel_robot_cleaner 5 points6 points ago

That sucks man. :( I BLAME THE MEDIA!

[–]EchoHayashi 6 points7 points ago

It's sad. You shouldn't even have to feel this way. You as a person and your nationality aren't the sole reason why terrorism exists. After 9/11 Americans (I'm a white American girl if you didn't know) seem to link up Islam or the Arab people with 9/11 or terrorism in general.

Yesterday I learned from a friend that their young sibling's school called his parents, as they did some others, for a parenting conference to be held on 9/11. The topic? The horrors of Islam. My friend, his parents, their family, and the other attendants are Muslim or originating from the Middle Eastern to Southern Asian areas. It's a disgusting discovery but it seems not enough people knew about it to make a huge deal out of it's disgusting topic. Not to mention the attendants seemed to scared or intimidated to do anything about it.

I wish there was something better I could have done, but alas they probably wouldn't listen to the opinions a 17 year old.

People being so xenophobic, racist or just downright spiteful make me sick.

[–]sergioqureshi 14 points15 points ago

Man, 9/11 sucked so bad. I am of middle eastern descent and I was in 1st grade when it happened. Throughout school I have been called camel-jockey, Sand-nigger, towelhead, terrorist, paki, among a few other insults. Kids would yell "Alalalalala" at me in the hallways and I have been beaten by ignorant, white trash, wannabe gangbangers more times than I can count. Fuck rascism.

[–]danintexas 20 points21 points ago

This prob won't get seen. But fuck any one who makes you feel you have to be this way. I would like to have words with any one who does. -signed a gun carrying life long fiscal conservative red neck Texan. If I could I would buy you a beer tonight and scream at the top of my lungs - this guy is my reddit brother!
