Taken from this article about the only American not on Earth. Astronaut Frank Culbertson was on the ISS on 9/11 and was able to take a video shortly after the second tower collapsed.

All of that smoke you see there is flying right over my neighborhood. It was so freaky how dark it got. It went from a bright sunny day to an scary darkness so quickly.

My house was near the southern (right side of picture) end of the plume. I was in the 3rd grade, went outside with my little brother to collect scraps of burnt paper from the sky. Thankfully by the time it made it to our house it was mostly paper and not dust. Mother made us wash our hands a shit-ton after that, but I think we kept the papers somewhere. Most of em were probably 1-2 inches in either direction, like a post-it note that had the edges burned off.

For that day and the next, it looked like the towers collapsed in Bensonhurst - a small layer of that dust was on everything, all our cars, the sidewalk, the street, etc. Even papers from the offices made it that far. My cousins still have half burnt pieces of paper from the WTC that blew all the way to Bensonhurst that they grabbed that day when they got off the bus coming home from school.

Without any borders visible, this becomes much more of a tragedy for humanity versus an American issue. I imagine looking down on our earth and seeing plumbs of smoke rising from something other than nature must be harrowing.

For those of you who have Google Earth, there is a satellite image of Manhattan on 9/11. It's hard to tell what state the towers are in because of all the smoke.

I can't write well, but I can imagine. Many years ago I wrote a story about an astronaut who was in orbit when nuclear war broke out on earth. As I said, I can't write, but I can imagine how Culbertson felt.

To me, that doesn't do justice to the amount of destruction going on. The photos of wildfires from space look much more dramatic, but they aren't seared into our national psyche.

I saw this in a video we watched in my history class. There was more footage of the towers than I had ever seen before. It was crazy. Just the sheer power that the impacts of those planes had.

I was living in Coney Island at the time. If you look, the smoke is going over and covering that area. Every time I left my house that day I smelled burning rubber. Then there was the papers that were still coming down in Brooklyn like a library exploded over us. Surreal was the only thought I had.

On the far right of the image is Sandy Hook NJ. When the planes hit the towers students from the school on the peninsula walked out onto the beach and they saw the smoke and watched as the tower north tower fell. One of the worst days in American history.
