Taken from this article about the only American not on Earth. Astronaut Frank Culbertson was on the ISS on 9/11 and was able to take a video shortly after the second tower collapsed.

Edit: Here's the actual video that this photo was taken from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxtlzby4YjM

[–]NotaMethAddict 85 points86 points ago

He described the situation to me as best he knew it at ~0900 CDT. I was flabbergasted, then horrified. My first thought was that this wasn't a real conversation, that I was still listening to one of my Tom Clancy tapes. It just didn't seem possible on this scale in our country.

That must have so surreal. It was surreal for me when it happened but I can't even imagine being so separated from everyone else is space and watching it unfold.

[–]Dabakus 37 points38 points ago

A god damn astronaut is a Tom Clancy fan?

on tape?

[–]asherrd 12 points13 points ago

Ziiiiingggggg.

Anyways, don't some terrorists crash planes into the WTC in some Tom Clancy book from the early 90s. I could see that being confusing.

[–]grif392 17 points18 points ago

A disgruntled Japanese pilot crashes a plane into the capitol building in one book, but I don't recall any other plane/building homicide.

Source: I read way too much tom clancy.

[–]theBeefyRhino 14 points15 points ago

Right at the end of Debt of Honor, if I'm not mistaken.

[–]grif392 7 points8 points ago

Indeed. The simultaneous deaths of almost everyone in american politics leads to Tom Clan-I mean, Jack Ryan's presidency.

[–]ttmlkr 3 points4 points ago

Starting Executive Orders, I believe.

[–]NegatorySteve 1 point2 points ago

Indeed, and correct.

[–]whoami9 1 point2 points ago

I'm ashamed to admit that I knew that already...

All of congress and the top 3 or 4 people in the Presidential line of succession were killed in that attack.

[–]LNMagic 0 points1 point ago

I expect a tape or audiobook would weigh less than a paperback.

[–]EvilHom3r 36 points37 points ago

[–]CVBrownie 7 points8 points ago

Fascinating is all the boats in the harbor they were talking about on the other front page video from today.

[–]AnthraxxLULZ 3 points4 points ago

Do you have a link? I didn't see it.

EDIT: Forget it. Here it is for those that haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18lsxFcDrjo

[–]JimiFin 3 points4 points ago

Incredible tribute to the selfless spirit. Mahalo for sharing.

[–]AliceDestroyed 14 points15 points ago

Oh shit, I can see my house

[–]xCruise 10 points11 points ago

Now we know where you live.

[–]unoriginal_ganster 0 points1 point ago

been lurking but I signed on just to comment on you....i can see my block as well .i live on that chicken nugget shaped island of new york city

[–]thirstyghost 1 point2 points ago

so can I , what island is yours?

[–]youregonnaloveme 7 points8 points ago

That guy straight up has a trumpet in space.

[–]xxsmokealotxx -2 points-1 points ago

in space, no one can hear how much you suck..

[–]GroovenileDelinquent 41 points42 points ago

I thought the ISS was...higher

Like in... space

[–]Saint_drums_n_stuff 73 points74 points ago

Low Earth orbit.

[–]SubtlePineapple 24 points25 points ago

I've actually seen a space shuttle (can't remember which) and the ISS docking, from the ground. They moved over the night sky (or as much as I could see) in not much more than a minute. They were much brighter than stars, but dimmer than an airplane's lights, and moving very quickly.

[–]Dustin81783 21 points22 points ago

One of the coolest things I'd seen was the ISS flying over head, with one of the space shuttles about a minute behind it in pursuit.

[–]Theredditur 15 points16 points ago

dont let that ISS get away!

[–]yangar 16 points17 points ago

Dat ISS.

[–]ZombiePilot15 2 points3 points ago

"He's gonna get away!" "No he's not."

[–]Sprengstoff 3 points4 points ago

That's awesome! I sometimes see it when it flies overhead here. Always amazed by it, and I tell as many people that are around me that I can when I do see it.

[–]Dustin81783 2 points3 points ago

And if you're around the same people I am, no one ever shares your enthusiasm no matter how much you you explain how cool it is.

[–]Bologna_Biscuits 1 point2 points ago

My friends just never believe me.

[–]Ftumsh 11 points12 points ago

It orbits at just over 200 miles above the earth.

[–]kycube 7 points8 points ago

And the moon is about 221,457 miles (356,400 km) away from the ISS (at its closest point).

Just to give you some perspective, earth is 93 million miles (150 million km) away from the sun.

[–]32koala 3 points4 points ago

Space is just above the earth. When you go in orbit, you are constantly falling around the earth. It's pretty cool to think about.

[–]sumebrius 11 points12 points ago

Orbiting is basically flying using the Douglas Adams method. Just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

[–]I_have_a_Secret 11 points12 points ago

Amazing video that really makes you think.

I still cant wrap my mind around the fact that a human being was sitting in space making a video of something like this happening down on earth.

Yes, us humans fuck up but we do a lot of good stuff on the side too.

[–]chknh8r 4 points5 points ago

http://www.peenemuende.de/index.php?id=40&L=1

Nazi's came up with the base of modern rocket science. The Saturn V rocket and the Russian versions are basically scaled up versions of the v2. The v2 was the payload part of the A-series of multi-stage rockets or Aggregate Series. Germany went from a depression caused by crippling inflation and in 6 years from 1936 to 1942 they funded enough research and developement to be the 1st of all the humans in the history of mankind to launch anything manmade into the beginning reaches of our space.

Oh yeah and nukes

edit. added link of Einstein's letter

[–]KimboSpice 19 points20 points ago

The size of the panic attack I would have knowing I was the only American in Space and my country was under attack makes my palms sweat just sitting here. "WILL THEY COME GET ME?"

[–]HarryButts 9 points10 points ago

The ISS has escape pods. Called the Soyuz

News article

[–]NewAccts 2 points3 points ago

If you ever read World War Z (which you absolutely should), there is a section on exactly this. Was really good too

[–]elclark94 1 point2 points ago

The size of the panic attack I am getting just thinking about your comment is making my palms sweaty. Fuckin anxiety man! Hate it!

[–]mainemade 3 points4 points ago

No shit, my thoughts exactly. To be stranded...shudder!

[–]blarg_dino 0 points1 point ago

That must've been quite the experiance

[–]the_bryce_is_right 1 point2 points ago

As someone who is unfamiliar with New York city geography, what borough is the smoking drifting into and approximately how many miles is that?

[–]agus468 44 points45 points ago

There's also this one.

[–]nicoleisrad 23 points24 points ago

How does that big boat get out of that little space in the harbor?

[–]Blakjak007 21 points22 points ago

Tug Boats.

And an awesome captain.

EDIT: Tug Boat's to Tug Boats

[–]imlman74 10 points11 points ago

Tug Boat's what?

[–]nicoleisrad 3 points4 points ago

DICK. Tug Boat's dick.

[–]Blakjak007 5 points6 points ago

Not sure if you are pulling me up on the fact I wrote Tug Boat instead of Tugboat but if you really don't know what I mean have a look at this

Here is a smaller one in action where I live at the start of 2011 during some major flooding we had.

[–]Ikronix 11 points12 points ago

He's noting the stray apostrophe in your post.

Tug Boat's

[–]vegetarianBLTG 5 points6 points ago

He's poking fun at your grammar. Should be "Tug Boats" not "Tug Boat's". The apostrophe makes it seem like you left out some object that belongs to the Tug Boat.

[–]Blakjak007 0 points1 point ago

Didn't even notice! Will edit for the grammar.

[–]chestercoop 3 points4 points ago

Nope, it's the unnecessary apostrophe that you were being called out on.

[–]66xsseldoG 3 points4 points ago

It doesn't cause it's a Museum Resturaunt house

I have no idea.

[–]Sawdust_Prophet 1 point2 points ago

A tugboat would help pull it out of its berth, then push on the front of it to help it turn more tightly than it can on its own.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]sigaven 0 points1 point ago

the same way it got in.

[–]reddittt91 12 points13 points ago

Here's the full resolution version of that pic: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/wtc/images/wtc-photo.jpg [9372x9372]

[–]shorty6049 10 points11 points ago

Wow... it's kind of interesting looking at the surrounding buildings. When conspiracy theorists claim that the buildings imploded like a controlled demolition, they're neglecting to mention the amount of building that landed on nearby roofs

[–]reptomin 0 points1 point ago

What was the date that was taken on?

[–]lovehatepeace_pot 3 points4 points ago

keep the bow thruster towards the dock, kick port engine in reverse with rudder hard to starboard and push starboards motors in and out of gear to swing the aft around while keeping the bow in position. no it doesnt take tugs, ive been there it's a 115 marquis.

[–]brooklynbotz 23 points24 points ago

All of that smoke you see there is flying right over my neighborhood. It was so freaky how dark it got. It went from a bright sunny day to an scary darkness so quickly.

[–]tbv141 85 points86 points ago

Looks like a guy eating a slab of meat.

[–]rekishi 26 points27 points ago

Mmm, Steaken Island.

[–]Octizzle 10 points11 points ago

I can't see this for the life of me

[–]SubtlePineapple 5 points6 points ago

From where the smoke is originating from is the back of the mouth. Upwards is the head. Two things in the mouth, probably piers, look like teeth. There's a little island separated from mainland by river, that's the "meat".

[–]Octizzle 2 points3 points ago

ooohhhh, and his eye kinda looks mad?

[–]KAYAWS 2 points3 points ago

First thing I noticed too. Didn't even read the title/see the smoke at first.

[–]ridik_ulass 1 point2 points ago

looks like a guy with a gun turning sharply to me.

[–]Scrubtac 0 points1 point ago

I thought it looked like a smoking man, with the smoke going over the water where his mouth would be and even holding a cigarette

[–]tazmaniac86 0 points1 point ago

Aye, saw the same thing. He's wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled down in front of his eyes.

[–]AMerrickanGirl 0 points1 point ago

Many people think that Long Island looks like a fish eating the worm that is Manhattan. Hard to see in the photo here unless you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise.

[–]Uberninjaa 1 point2 points ago

It looks like he's throwing it up.

[–]loopynewt 0 points1 point ago

That or a big beard

[–]mcoree 27 points28 points ago

I know this is a bad place to say this, but I can literally see my house from here

[–]Eighthsin 46 points47 points ago

I can see your house, too, and I don't need the picture.

[–]Mikerk 28 points29 points ago

First thing I noticed was how it looks like some weird skull eating something

http://i.imgur.com/z9Ez8.jpg

[–]LuckyAmeliza 7 points8 points ago

Can't unsee.

[–]SixFootJockey 2 points3 points ago

Eating or regurgitating?

[–]Mikerk 1 point2 points ago

Now that you point it out it's definitely regurgitating

[–]thebullfrog85 0 points1 point ago

I saw that too at first, after looking at your pic on why the red circle was drawn..i now see the something, is a gun. and the space behind it is well.. think borderland's cover.

[–]Xavs42 10 points11 points ago

My house was near the southern (right side of picture) end of the plume. I was in the 3rd grade, went outside with my little brother to collect scraps of burnt paper from the sky. Thankfully by the time it made it to our house it was mostly paper and not dust. Mother made us wash our hands a shit-ton after that, but I think we kept the papers somewhere. Most of em were probably 1-2 inches in either direction, like a post-it note that had the edges burned off.

[–]castellammare 4 points5 points ago

For that day and the next, it looked like the towers collapsed in Bensonhurst - a small layer of that dust was on everything, all our cars, the sidewalk, the street, etc. Even papers from the offices made it that far. My cousins still have half burnt pieces of paper from the WTC that blew all the way to Bensonhurst that they grabbed that day when they got off the bus coming home from school.

[–]JayKaos 10 points11 points ago

The point right before the smoke first exits Brooklyn was right where my family lived at the time.

The smell was not pleasant.

[–]annaqua 8 points9 points ago

I went up on my roof today, in south Brooklyn, and looked at One WTC. thought about the people living in this apartment 11 years ago, seeing what they must have seen. I can't imagine.

[–]KingPinBreezy 8 points9 points ago

Imagine World War II

[–]MedicX -3 points-2 points ago

Could not agree more. What this 9/11 nonsense needs is perspective. Stalingrad, Dresden, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, London. That's destruction of cities and killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians. You think people would know with the WWII obsession in media the last decade or so. I find the obsession with the 9/11 event, the subsequent wars waged, killing of Bin laden and finally seeing Americans cheering his death, disturbing to say the least. None of it was legal, Europe was duped to help with false evidence before the UN by the US. Then the US had, two times, no plans of any sort then defeat the regime militarily. What a clusterfuck that was and is. I think the last straw for me was the extrajudicial killing of Bin laden and the American reaction to some mythical boogeyman being killed that the mass media had conjured up. All because of 3000 people and a couple of buildings. And now a state half way around the world, bombing ignorant and poor desert nomads in a region destroyed by decades of war that was funded by that very state, is evil. Sometimes evil wins and proclaims itself as good. Enjoy your freedom fried lies.

[–]finxz 3 points4 points ago

There is no difference between one murder and a genocide, neither is more worse nor any better than the either. They are both equally tragic and horrible events, how horrible you consider murder overall is where the perspective lies.

[–]Lurks_And_Votes 6 points7 points ago

I'm going to have to disagree. Two murders is twice as bad as one murder, if every human life is of equal value. Genocide? A couple million times worse.

[–]finxz 1 point2 points ago

I understand where you're coming from and I can respect people who feel that way. However I just wish people didn't try to compare tragedies based on numbers as if one is less valid as a tragedy than the other.

[–]flanjoe 1 point2 points ago

I don't think that's how tragedies work, ranking in, well, 'validity.' It's just that the killing of millions of people is obviously a much more horrific and impactful event than a single murder, no matter how disgusting and horrible a single murder is. Some tragedies resonate with a larger amount of people because they affect more people and the world around them, y'know?

[–]eramos 0 points1 point ago

Poor, innocent Europe. DUPED! DUPED into waging war. Good thing they would never do something like that, in perhaps Stalingrad, Dresden, or London.

[–]barcelonaKIZ 7 points8 points ago

Without any borders visible, this becomes much more of a tragedy for humanity versus an American issue. I imagine looking down on our earth and seeing plumbs of smoke rising from something other than nature must be harrowing.

[–]Psyc3 4 points5 points ago

Actually to me it was exactly the opposite, all it shows is how minor event it really was, all you have to do is imagine what Baghdad looked like on the first night of the Iraq invasion and this would be nothing in comparison, on the first day the US first 44 tomahawk missiles and in Libya on the first day 144 were fired by the US and the UK.

[–]mrpickles 8 points9 points ago

I've never seen this picture before. Thanks for sharing it.

[–]Lythysis 2 points3 points ago

Anyone else see the creepy face?

[–]HouseOfHouse 3 points4 points ago

From that distance it looks insignificant, on the ground the event is still effecting everyone.

[–]EyeAmMoMo 2 points3 points ago

All I see is a face with puckered lips blowing smoke

[–]WorkerLover 0 points1 point ago

I came here hoping to see someone shop the face outline

[–]thepensivepoet 5 points6 points ago

A lot of that carbon was people the day before.

[–]PieandBiscuits 2 points3 points ago

Does anyone know if there's a shot after they collapsed?

[–]Skoles 12 points13 points ago

At home I have an even higher res version of this shot. You can see people on the street. But this should do:

Collapse fly-over

[–]als365 2 points3 points ago

I would be interested in seeing the hi-res

[–]AndThatsWhyIDrink 12 points13 points ago

Here you go. Taken from here and rehosted to minus for speed. The file is about 14MB and resolution is 9372 X 9372.

[–]Skoles 2 points3 points ago

Thanks. I just got home and was about to upload it.

Here's another view of the city. Flyover2

[–]AndThatsWhyIDrink 0 points1 point ago

I haven't seen this one before. Thanks.

[–]brawr 0 points1 point ago

likewise

[–]TheCocksmith 1 point2 points ago

I don't have any working of NY geography. Which way is the smoke blowing? Which was is North?

[–]gythorg 4 points5 points ago

north is to the left. If you find central park (the long skinny green thing on the same island of the smoke) it runs north to south

[–]evilted 3 points4 points ago

North is pointing toward the left of the pic. New Jersey is that thing on the far right.

[–]TheCocksmith -3 points-2 points ago

I hope nobody make a New Jersey joke

[–]mooltipass 0 points1 point ago

if you look at the hudson river in this pic running east to west, everything below the hudson is nj, everything above is NY. above the smoke is brooklyn, queens, long island...

[–]ostiarius 1 point2 points ago

The smoke is blowing almost exactly due south.

[–]tuck5649 0 points1 point ago

For those of you who have Google Earth, there is a satellite image of Manhattan on 9/11. It's hard to tell what state the towers are in because of all the smoke.

[–]GregorMendel 0 points1 point ago

Weird, the winds blew from North --> south that day?

[–]peted1884 0 points1 point ago

I can't write well, but I can imagine. Many years ago I wrote a story about an astronaut who was in orbit when nuclear war broke out on earth. As I said, I can't write, but I can imagine how Culbertson felt.

[–]calabron69 -1 points0 points ago

Anyone else think the land looks like a skeleton vommiting?

[–]rightwrongwhatever 1 point2 points ago

To me, that doesn't do justice to the amount of destruction going on. The photos of wildfires from space look much more dramatic, but they aren't seared into our national psyche.

[–]snowballfight 0 points1 point ago

You can see the boats evacuating people :O

[–]Ozymandiazzz 0 points1 point ago

That's awfully close to the surface. I doubt you'd see it from looking at a satellite globe.

[–]girltano 0 points1 point ago

I lived in Queens at the time and I could see the smoke from my window. I had no idea it was visible all the way in central New Jersey.

[–]Melnorme -1 points0 points ago

I see a man eating pizza.

[–]bwdmighall -1 points0 points ago

Pretty powerful. And sad.

[–]MANTISxB 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or does NYC in that pic look like a huge skull-thing wearing a hat, with a smoking mouth?

[–]markspyguy 0 points1 point ago

You can also interact with it on Google Earth with the Timeline slider.

[–]FreshWhiteDude 0 points1 point ago

looks like a guy throwing up

[–]hairyassandballs 0 points1 point ago

looks like a triceratops eating a steak

[–]Slivilth 1 point2 points ago

Anyone else try to scroll the mouse wheel down to zoom out?

[–]NoPatBadPat 1 point2 points ago

Holy Fuck New York City IS BIG!!!

[–]TheRealCaptObvious 1 point2 points ago

You can see the smoke.

[–]thefinalcourier96 0 points1 point ago

I saw this in a video we watched in my history class. There was more footage of the towers than I had ever seen before. It was crazy. Just the sheer power that the impacts of those planes had.

[–]Scrabblet 1 point2 points ago

I can see my town from here

[–]clavipespurpurea 0 points1 point ago

Wow. NYC looks like cancer

hard to believe Manhattan used to be a marsh

[–]gaylordsforce 1 point2 points ago

bastards.

[–]Deadfish211 -1 points0 points ago

I can see my house from here

[–]fluxity 0 points1 point ago

This makes me curious about other events from space - forest fires, wars, etc probably create more smoke than this, right? Can you see fireworks from up there? I had no idea things like this were so clear.

[–]montydog 1 point2 points ago

Is it just me or does it look like an old man smoking?

[–]davey9999 1 point2 points ago

Wow NYC looks like a skull smoking a pipe.

[–]keep_the_karma 0 points1 point ago

Fly swat!

[–]jaytrade21 1 point2 points ago

I was living in Coney Island at the time. If you look, the smoke is going over and covering that area. Every time I left my house that day I smelled burning rubber. Then there was the papers that were still coming down in Brooklyn like a library exploded over us. Surreal was the only thought I had.

[–]BreakfastBurrito 0 points1 point ago

I guess I take it for granted since I fly so much, but Kennedy International Airport is fucking massive.

[–]Amonette 0 points1 point ago

That was truly moving. My mouth fell open when I heard that it was bigger than Dunkirk.

[–]KuztomX -1 points0 points ago

"At 45 degrees the sky will burn, Fire to approach the great new city." - Nostradamus

Freaking creepy.

[–]mingamongo -1 points0 points ago

Did something happen that day?

[–]spookymulder765 1 point2 points ago

We Will Never Forget.

[–]fakeredditor -1 points0 points ago

I can see my house from here!

[–]Jeffy29 0 points1 point ago

Giant hive.

[–]tartartfart 0 points1 point ago

Its an old man wearing a helmet throwing up

[–]jww4th 0 points1 point ago

On the far right of the image is Sandy Hook NJ. When the planes hit the towers students from the school on the peninsula walked out onto the beach and they saw the smoke and watched as the tower north tower fell. One of the worst days in American history.

[–]nukemech13 0 points1 point ago

Dude, we are so fucking small.

[–]funkminister 0 points1 point ago

Unreal.

[–]Cantore18 0 points1 point ago

Never seen this before. Thank you

[–]OompaLumpia 1 point2 points ago

It kind of looks like a guy eating his biceps...Oh NY.

[–]CuntMcFuckGiggles -1 points0 points ago

If you look real close, you can see George W. Bush about to flush our fucking Constitutional Rights right down the toilet for his boogeyman scare story.

[–]Defualt 1 point2 points ago

[–]storm35 0 points1 point ago

how have i not seen this till now??

[–]jamman751 0 points1 point ago

Go to google earth and search manhattan and then go back in time to 9/11. You can see this photo. Its breathtaking.

[–]clancycoop 0 points1 point ago

Isn't it amazing that what happened in that tiny geographical area would change the entire world?

[–]Professor_Oak 0 points1 point ago

Please tell me somebody else sees the turtle with sunglasses!!

[–]thefidlerontheroof 0 points1 point ago

i can see what looks like the anterior portion of the cranium on a side view. Just look closely.

[–]allapologies27 0 points1 point ago

The harbor looks like an angry skull.

[–]friest_bend 0 points1 point ago

It's scary that I can pinpoint my apartment building, my school, and my job on this map.

[–]efischerSC2 0 points1 point ago

This is easily the best 9/11 picture I have ever seen.

[–]knobcheez 0 points1 point ago

I can see my hometown area in this picture.

Never forget 9/11

[–]FiFtY2303 0 points1 point ago

enhance!!

[–]TurbidTwatCocktail 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, we had satellites back then?

[–]Socks1400 1 point2 points ago

No other words. This just makes me sad.

[–]ast03 0 points1 point ago

repost from 11 years ago.....

[–]rickanddianne -3 points-2 points ago

We have not seen this picture before. It is awesome how much we damage each other. Thank you for posting.

[–]jonnysan -3 points-2 points ago
