"What are you doing in the third world?" Slaps me on the knee.

[–]BoonTobias 31 points32 points ago

Protip: vat be mad expensive

[–]I_Will_Dumb_It_Down/b/ 12 points13 points ago

I always read that in TF2 heavy's voice. Is this relevant to the greentext?

[–]antaryon 339 points340 points ago

This is bullshit. Healthcare isn't free in Europe. Last month I went to the dentist to fix a broken tooth and I had to pay 10 euros.

[–]praise_the_almighty 53 points54 points ago

German I presume?!

[–]rrrook 31 points32 points ago

In Germany you pay 10 Euros/quarter if you go to the doctor the first time in that respective quarter.Since the numbers of doctors visits are very high in germany compared to other countries, they also thought, that they might prevent, that especially older people, who are not really ill, don´t try to use doctors visits are substitutes for their lack of social contacts in everyday life. According one report i read this year, the average german is seeing a doctor 17 times/year.

[–]D3von1[!] 14 points15 points ago

holy fuck, seriously? Last time I went to the doctor was to get my smell checked, about 4 years ago.

[–]NiggerJew944 31 points32 points ago

So did he tell you how you smelled?

[–]fezzuk 19 points20 points ago

i guess he told him he used his nose.

[–]judetheobtuse 11 points12 points ago

Schrecklich!

[–]D3von1[!] 0 points1 point ago

No, but he did stick a tube up my nose. 4 times.

[–]shoobshab 0 points1 point ago

Terrible!

[–]Quazz 7 points8 points ago

Must have sucked to hear your smell was terminal.

[–]Vondi/a/ 2 points3 points ago

Hell, I have a life-shortening heart defect and my doctor only sees me once a year...

[–]OrD0g[!] 4 points5 points ago

You have to pay the 10 Euro seperatly at the dentist though...even if you payed your house doc already...one of the few exceptions

[–]thinksthoughts 4 points5 points ago

In America you pay $30( at least 15 Euros) just to see a physician.

Then they start "treating" you to some expensive and sometimes useless procedures.

For example.
My brother ended up paying $500 with insurance for a scan.
They revealed cysts in his kidneys.

The doctor had only this to say. "Dont worry about it. Its not a problem"

Releived, my brother asks "Why do I have cists in my kidneys"

The doctor shrugged and replied" I dunno"
and left it at that.

Be 4 months later.
Still dont know why he has cysts in his kidneys.
Skin started breaking out in rashes.

[–]praise_the_almighty 0 points1 point ago

17 times a year wow who are those people? I am German and last time I went was in 2011.

[–]antaryon 2 points3 points ago

Romanian

[–]Just_Like_You 136 points137 points ago

My mom recently paid $1800 (1400 euros) to have one tooth worked on.

USA.

[–]mmazing 60 points61 points ago

I paid $230 yesterday with no dental insurance.

[–]csorfab 16 points17 points ago

That's still a bit more than 10 euros.

[–]heliphael 12 points13 points ago

I'd rather pay $230 than $1800.

[–]ImWade 18 points19 points ago

Porcelain veneers, I had to get 8. ~$2500 each. Insurance didn't cover 'cosmetic' procedures, since some of my teeth were knocked out.

[–]sauravsett 20 points21 points ago

Could have flown to India and got it done cheaper.

[–]IShaveMyLegs 2 points3 points ago

That's nice, and I have a friend that does this. However, my friend that does this only manages properties and doesn't have a real job. He can take a week off to go to India for dental work. Most people in the US can't.

[–]thefreshscent 0 points1 point ago

Never mind the two way ticket that costs a few grand and the treatments you will need to fight off whatever infection you get from the Indian street dentist.

[–]HanktheIII 9 points10 points ago

I paid $56 to have both of my wisdom teeth removed, on the top jaw. That included an x-ray and the Lidocaine.

'merica.

[–]tiger_mouse 1 point2 points ago

I had all four removed three years ago in hospital for free. Lucky I'm British I suppose.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TheWac0Kid 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I paid about 300$ for mine. It wasn't too much for a procedure that saved me a lot I time and pain. This entire thread was meant to inspire butthurt, but idgaf. I'm on hospital employee insurance and I get ridiculous discounts for dental procedures for the same reason.

U mad rest of the US?

[–]ButtNekid 8 points9 points ago

Note to self:

Either give up my love for extreme sports or don't move to the US.

[–]Garkanka 5 points6 points ago

1 Euro is 1.28 dollars..

[–]prezjordan -4 points-3 points ago

She would've spent well over $1800 in taxes to have the "10 euro" treatment. Just an FYI.

[–]owarren 24 points25 points ago

What she wouldn't have spent her taxes on though, would be obscene military funding.

[–]blazemore 3 points4 points ago

And how much would she have spent on insurance to a company, rather than the government?

[–]prezjordan 2 points3 points ago

If she bought her own insurance? Probably the same as her taxes now. If she had a corporate job, just the deductible (if there is one). Of course that money technically comes out of her paycheck. Same as taxes. Same game.

Personally? I'd like my government to cover it. They should.

[–]youtea 2 points3 points ago

1 root canal = 2k

[–]laikasghost/r9k/ 2 points3 points ago

For petrol?

[–]DAVENP0RT 8 points9 points ago

Also, unless you pay £0/€0 in taxes, healthcare isn't free. Heavily subsidized, yes, but not free.

[–]Arktri 33 points34 points ago

But the US pay taxes and pay incredibly large sums for medical care. And education.

[–]DAVENP0RT 13 points14 points ago

My tax rate is ~25%, ~1.5% of my paycheck goes toward insurance, and I have a $30 co-pay for office visits and a $1,500 deductible. If I go to the doctor twice a year, I spend a total of about $300/year on healthcare alone. I have middle-of-the-road insurance, so there are better rates than mine if you pay 3% or so. The difference between American insurance and European insurance is that a catastrophe will put me back about $3,000 whereas in Europe, it'd be little to nothing.

Is the American system economically fair? Not at all...unless you don't need major medical care, which is most of the population at any given time. My point is that, while I may pay more at one time for medical care, over my lifetime I will have payed much less than if I had been taxed at a higher rate in order to subsidize universal healthcare.

This isn't a moral argument for or against subsidized healthcare (I actually support it), but speaking economically per individual, the American system works better for most people, definitely not all. I just hate the term "free healthcare" because it doesn't account for the increased taxes that cover its cost.

As for American education, that shit's fucked up.

[–]icantthinkofagoodnam 5 points6 points ago

I have a tax rate of 47,48% and pay 8,2% for health care (the employer pays additional 7,3% - so it's 15,5% in total) - If I want a fancy tooth repair at the dentist I have to pay most of it alone.

So much about "free" health care in Germany.

edit: I forgot about the sales tax. You have depending on the state you are something from 0-10%. We have 19%.

[–]SirPrice 1 point2 points ago

So you wouldn't need cancer treatment, but someone else would. This burden would be carried by the whole not by an individual. It's a social system.

[–]DaneBread 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather pay for what it costs to fix a hole in a tooth than what it costs to fix a hole in the spleen or heart.

[–]ForrestFireDW 1 point2 points ago

Let me guess. Germany? 10 euros sounds about right for the cost of a visit.

[–]crispywaffle 1 point2 points ago

Oh no, breaking the bank

[–]Ian1732/v/ 31 points32 points ago

Needed more clapping.

[–]lastkajen 25 points26 points ago

[–]bucky420 195 points196 points ago

actually in america the ambulance would pick you up, take you to the emergency room, and they'd stabilize you. then an admissions employee would visit you where they'd find out you had no insurance. they would then transfer you to a city or county hospital. you would be kept there until you were legally healthy enough to leave. you'd go home and get bills for everything. you wouldn't pay them because they would be a fortune. your credit gets ruined. meanwhile, the hospitals and ambulance company get reimbursed for a lot of their expenses by tax dollars. so it's basically free healthcare anyway.

[–]mootwo14 147 points148 points ago

In Europe you get free healthcare without your credit being ruined

[–]bucky420 124 points125 points ago

how awful. how do bankruptcy lawyers make a living there?

[–]Fonjask 152 points153 points ago

We also don't have the "Me fucking up must be the company's fault, let's sue them!" mentality. A previously american woman sued a clothing shop here in the EU because she fell over clothes that had fallen on the ground. The judge gave her a €150 penalty for wasting the court's time.

[–]Ztiller 104 points105 points ago

The judge gave her a €150 penalty for wasting the court's time.

Europe: Jolly Good

[–]Firekracker/b/ 2 points3 points ago

Thr robin as (supra)national bird of Europe? I approve. Most European countries have eagles or lions though.

[–]orange_kevin 27 points28 points ago

[–]Firekracker/b/ 0 points1 point ago

Sweden doesn't exactly have Euro dude. I've been to stores where I could pay with them but I don't think that's the norm.

[–]elRinbo 1 point2 points ago

ahem, hate to burst your bubble, but many of these happy-go-law-suit folks are immigrants.

[–]raaaargh_stompy 7 points8 points ago

Also you don't get deported to the second tier medical facilities.

[–]ratlater 6 points7 points ago

In fairness, in most major cities in the US, the city/county (public) hospital is where you want to go if you have traumatic injuries (gunshot wounds, stab wounds, etc). They'll typically be far more experienced at handling acute emergency stuff like that than the private hospitals, which are often prettier/more comfortable and deal better with non-emergency stuff.

ninjaEdit: accidentally a word

[–]raaaargh_stompy 2 points3 points ago

That's an interesting point. But of course, if there was just one type of hispital they'd be experienced at everything :)

[–]crispywaffle 4 points5 points ago

In Canada you get free healthcare without your credit vein ruined

[–]parles 3 points4 points ago

That's like saying that if you can get the loan the money is free.

[–]bucky420 4 points5 points ago

i meant free as in tax payers in the us already pay for healthcare

[–]Nilso 4 points5 points ago

Ambulance Company?

[–]rotzooi 23 points24 points ago

Just call 1-800-AMBULANCE when you are dying and they'll come and pick you up. Have your VISA or MasterCard ready. AMEX not accepted.

[–]booyah-achieved 8 points9 points ago

a lot of the ambulances here are operated by private companies

[–]Nilso 5 points6 points ago

I guess that's why the american health-system is the most effective in the world!

[–]Democritus477 4 points5 points ago

I guess you're being sarcastic? Hospitals, like most large organizations, outsource a lot of work to smaller contractors. I don't see what's illogical about that.

[–]camelFace 10 points11 points ago

For non-Americans with state-run health care, a private ambulance company is very much an alien concept. For the most part, in these countries health care -- much like law enforcement, the military, and education -- is considered to be an unprofitable necessity. Trying to force health care into a profitable state would suggest worrying methods of cost-cutting: seen in other areas of private industry, these introduce inconvenience. In medical treatment, it's quite conceivable that these would introduce unnecessary loss of life. In terms of emergency first responders, this concept seems totally fucking insane. Are there privatized firestations and police organizations too?

[–]RipVanVVinkle 2 points3 points ago

In my area private ambulance companies deal with hospital to hospital transfers after a patient has been stabilized but needs transported to a more appropriate facility. Then fire department both paid and volunteer cover some counties and other counties have county EMS. I work for a county based EMS service which in run by a tax payer based levy. We bill on a sliding fee scale based upon your income. In some areas private ambulance companies do emergency service as well. While making a profit is a private company owners main objective the employees at these companies still have to qualify at a national level to practice emergency services but often their equipment isn't the same as a fire department or county based squad and they are also understocked because top of the line equipment and extra supplies aren't very cost effective. Not all private services are this way but in my area it's pretty par for the course.

[–]Bravetoasterr 6 points7 points ago

Yes, some ambulance companies exist separate from hospital/city owned. There's one not more than 4 doors from my place of employment. Why? No real idea, but I would imagine it has to do with financial things..

[–]PatAunces 2 points3 points ago

Ambulances are run by private companies. 911/hospital has a dispatch and calls out to find the nearest one, just like police do when sending an officer somewhere. That way ambulances can service several hospitals in a city.

[–]youtea 4 points5 points ago

The ambulance took me for 2 night stay at the ICU. The bill came up > $50k. The ambulance ride itself was > 2k. Most expensive hostel I ever stayed in.

I was on the borderline of losing my insurance at that time. My eyes rolled out of their sockets when I saw that bill.

Luckily, I did not go to the hospital to put my eyes back in.

[–]RedTiger013 147 points148 points ago

As an American I can confirm that everything could happen up until the point they call him a commie redcoat. We would probably just think it's cool and ask you to talk British or something..

[–]Cubsphere 145 points146 points ago

"Why did you guys name your country after New England? Why do you talk American? How does it feel like to live under a monarchy, without democracy and freedom?"

[–]RedTiger013 62 points63 points ago

Monarchy? I thought we were an autonomous collective.

[–]Cubsphere 25 points26 points ago

[–]DickMoveAdam 2 points3 points ago

All my M4 carbines are legally owned, because I get an erection whenever someone says "Second Amendment."

[–]Honey-Badger 4 points5 points ago

As a brit i can confim the asking of us to 'speak british' is true

[–]Pteryx 15 points16 points ago

As an angsty internet self-deprecating American, America is 100% accurately depicted in this post.

[–]mcstanky 5 points6 points ago

I agree. And i'm American.

[–]Starswarm 14 points15 points ago

No USA chant? Eurofag didn't do his research before he made this shit up. USA chant always comes after the national anthem, and before the jet flyover.

[–]Pearsonator 1 point2 points ago

He also forgot the clapping. And the friendly fire.

[–]Bravetoasterr 21 points22 points ago

This happened, I was the choirboy singing the Star Spangled Banner. I tried to save OP, but OP was from East London and I didn't have a gibberish to 'merican translator on hand. So I just left.

[–]Shredder13 5 points6 points ago

[–]willywonka159/v/ 7 points8 points ago

There's no such thing as free healthcare.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]LOLSTRALIA/b/ 18 points19 points ago

Ouch. I had a pretty wicked motorcycle accident and got picked up, drugged up, X-Rays and CT scan, bandaged up and walked out (crutches, broken foot) high as a kite. All without filling out a single form. My tax money well spent.

[–]mootwo14 10 points11 points ago

Oh, only seven thousand dollars for the privilege of continuing to live? That's OK then.

[–]EJR94 35 points36 points ago

No normal person can afford that, how can your country even think that free healthcare is a bad thing?

[–]jiveturkeykilla 14 points15 points ago

In reality they don't expect you to pay for it, and settle for a much much smaller amount.

[–]phullonrapist 7 points8 points ago

Plus there are certain programs for low income folks. I had a 30k bill lowered then paid for because I could show I made almost no money that year.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 4 points5 points ago

Stop giving your money to Philanthropy and start using it for your bills maybe?

[–]EddieFrits 11 points12 points ago

Because conservatives.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Guyag/g/ 5 points6 points ago

And an appendectomy is what, like less than an hour worth of an operation? Not a bad salary, $28k/hour.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Guyag/g/ 3 points4 points ago

Cleaning bedsheets is expensive, you know?

[–]Guyag/g/ 1 point2 points ago

The part that gets me is that they just take you and expect you to pay afterwards. I know they're not going to leave you there to die, but it seems so shitty to present a multi-thousand dollar bill to someone as they're lying with various holes in their body, and expect them to pay it, especially if they don't actually have the money.

[–]DoesntCareForNegroes 4 points5 points ago

That's just it though. They don't expect you to pay the bill afterwards. People in this thread would have you think that our hospitals have you put in jail for not paying the the dollar amount that they pulled out of their ass and threw on a bill. It's typical bullshit rhetoric of those who don't understand the industry but still think they're smarter that everyone else.

Sum up the total amount of debt owed my Americans to hospitals that gets sent to a collections agency. The percentage of that sum that actually gets paid: 11%. You're a sucker if you get slapped with a $50,000 medical bill and actually pay it. "BUT WHAT ABOUT MY CREDIT SCORE IT WILL HURT ME SO BAD." Well it doesn't do $50,000 worth of harm to you.

[–]Tynictansol 18 points19 points ago

Good thing there's no nationalism in Europe!

[–]Quazz 21 points22 points ago

Good thing there's no jokes on the internet!

[–]Kazumara 4 points5 points ago

Not so much in any case. In Switzerland we have about three yearly occasions: 1st of August, the national "birthday", and about two important sports games.

There are only relatively few people that even know our whole anthem. I am not one of them.

We don't pledge alliance every day in school, we don't have our flag up whenever possible we don't have candy-asses that rage when a flag touches the ground and most importantly we have neither king nor president nor prime minister, just an executive council of seven people.

[–]Moefty 2 points3 points ago

In Belgium nationalism is illegal.

[–]Lawlpielawl/x/ 16 points17 points ago

When will people understand that nothing is free? Just because you don't pay every time you go to the doctor doesn't mean you're not paying for it some other way. Have you heard of taxes? Whether it's from a higher tax rate or out of pocket each time you go, SOMEONE is paying for it. How many doctors do you know of that work for free? That's right. If you ask me, I'd much rather pay for my own healthcare because I know I take care of myself, rather than subsidizing some chain smoking crack head's doctor visits.

Goddamn I wish Europe would jack off into my mouth. I guarantee it would taste like gum drops and candy canes. Europe is fucking awesome, fuck America.

I paid €27 to pee in a cup and get a prescription for antibiotics. They didn't accept my American insurance but I'm not complaining.
