Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

is this a type of dragonet?

[–]neanderthalman 1 point2 points ago

Yes, a Mandarin Dragonet. It's often called a Mandarin Goby but is not a member of the Goby family.

Splendidus indeed.

We have this fish in our tank he he is a real OG fish.

I have a fairly aggressive tank. I'd love to get one of these. Would it be able to stick up for itself?

[–]joegekko 1 point2 points ago

Depends on what you mean by aggressive. They are saltwater fish, tiny, and they need plenty of hiding places.

In living reef tanks with lots of rocks they seem to do okay, but even among experienced saltwater guys they have something of a reputation (rightly or wrongly) for being difficult to care for.

[–]neanderthalman 4 points5 points ago

In a large enough reef tank, they'll just take care of themselves.

The difficulty is that they generally will only eat live copepods and won't take frozen or dried food. In a large enough reef tank, there's a sufficient population of copepods to maintain a stable feedstock. The fish just hunts for his dinner, and you don't have to do a damned thing.

Yeah what he said ^

Is it edible?

[–]eft_up 0 points1 point ago

Had one in my tank..

[–]Izawwlgood 0 points1 point ago

They're evidently really hard to care for because they're finicky eaters. I always wanted to get one when I had a tank.

[–]neanderthalman 0 points1 point ago

In a large enough reef tank you don't even need to feed them. The food they want just grows, and they hunt for it.

[–]Izawwlgood 0 points1 point ago

Right, but that supposes you've go those worms, which I suppose with any purchased live rock, you'll probably get, right?

[–]neanderthalman 1 point2 points ago

They're Copepods, little 'bugs', rather than worms. You can't get live rock without them.

[–]Zardoz23 1 point2 points ago

Did you know they are one of few fish that have a true blue color? Most fish mimic it with layers of other colors. Sorry to nerd out there just thought it was cool.

I had a couple in my tank some time ago. I like the way they hover on the bottom of the tank with their fins...

[–]Geewiz83 1 point2 points ago

Really picky eaters. We lucked out and got one that didn't mind bloodworms. Not sure we could have kept up with pod production necessary, otherwise...

edit* Also, I want to add - if you're thinking of getting one, get one raised in captivity. Not only does it increase the chances that they will survive on frozen foods, but the way these are commercially harvested is pretty bad.
