How is this nonsense voted up so highly? This is the kind of message you all want to send to the community as a whole? The attacks on 9/11 were not simply religious in nature. Politics had a lot to do with them as well. Religion was just the vehicle used to strike up anger and fear in order to get new recruits. All violence is reprehensible, but summing up the tragedy on that day into one simple image is not only disrespectful to all those people who lost their lives, but it sets the atheist movement back a step or too.

By creating and supporting images like this, you are no better than the close-minded, misguided people [who are also religious] that you mean to attack. Note my wording carefully. Being religious and being ignorant and/or bigoted are independent events, as this submissions shows.

i just thought we were bombing the moon

[–]Benevolentia 6 points7 points ago

Thank you. 9/11 was not purely about religion, though it did help motivate someone to smash a plane into a building. It also was not about "TURKING AWAY OUR FREEDUMZ". 9/11 had such a complex combination of political, social and cultural factors behind it that everyone seems to forget about.

[–]HilariousB 0 points1 point ago

Beautifully put.

[–]dumnezero -2 points-1 points ago

Well, now you have the honor of boiling down the foreign-policy debacle into one line of text and a few symbols.

Go, go, go !

Insightful, not one sided, thought out comment posted on r/atheism, by an Atheist? Whhaaaattt? I commend you sir.

[–]BePlant 4 points5 points ago

You can replace the moon by Mars by now too.

[–]rend0ggy 2 points3 points ago

The rocket resembles a penis

[–]blushingtart 3 points4 points ago

Is it obligatory? Can it not be? Please?

[–]sweep99 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes science fucks up and the rocket 'splodes. Sometimes.

[–]PurpleSweatshirt 0 points1 point ago

Science also creates nuclear bombs. Don't be so close-minded.

[–]wunderbaums 0 points1 point ago

religion dosn`t make you fly at all :)

[–]Shizzletech 1 point2 points ago

I never hate r/atheism, but when I do, it's always because of this post. It's horendous and so close minded. This is not how we want to show ourselves to the world.

[–]Gibellini 0 points1 point ago

Science can create weapons, Religion can create extremists. Although it's incredibly naive to assume that 9/11 was carried out by people who's sole stock and trade of motivation was 'Religion'. Anyway, if you're going to hate on something solely for the damage it can potentially cause, at least be consistent and hate other things solely for the damage they too cause (and ignore the possible positives).

[–]Khut -1 points0 points ago

Forget what? Forget WHAT???!

[–]Samurai_light 1 point2 points ago

This level of bigotry and ignorance is just as bad, if not worse, than fundamentalists of any religion.

First, most new science is utilized in the military before anywhere else, so "Science" is not so innocent. Secondly, less than 10% of all wars throughout history were religiously motivated.

So maybe it's just because people are evil, stupid, and are more interested in pointing out the differences in other people and condemning those differences than they are in bringing each other together.

And from what I can see, at least religion teaches people they are "supposed to" come together and love each other, unlike typical atheist philosophy.

[–]MrPotatoHead22 0 points1 point ago

This is ridiculous. Science has just as much to do with flying to the moon as it has to do with flying into buildings. Science allowed us to create both the rocket and the plane. What really matters is how we as humans decide to use them.

[–]kerdon 0 points1 point ago

Shitty foreign policy totally played no part in this.

[–]manuel_robot_cleaner 1 point2 points ago

For fucks sake, we need to stop posting this! Yes, religion had a hand in the 9/11 attacks, but that wasn't all! They were being controlled by a manipulative leader who simply used religion as a tool!

[–]Hiftle88 0 points1 point ago

No Judaism, No Nazis, No V-1/2 programme, No operation Paper-clip, No NASA, No voyage to moon in '69.

Pretty big over simplification I admit but you get my drift.

(FYi: not religious, not even 'atheist' just NO religion. Don't blame a religion on something devised by probably no more than 10 people. Whose to say they were even religious?)

[–]salvu667 0 points1 point ago

...sigh another misinformed human being.

[–]Amryxx 0 points1 point ago

Third thread saying the same potentially wrong thing.

And people wonder why I'm so cynical when they say atheists are guided by logic and reason.

[–]Kindoalkun -1 points0 points ago

So what about nuclear weapons?

[–]larpas 0 points1 point ago

Science also lands you on Mars.

[–]squigs 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes. The divinely powered planes that work without science, and the rocket flown by the devoutly atheist Buzz Aldrin who of course performed a religious ceremony on the moon for distinctly scientific reasons. Good job we didn't rely on scientists with strong religious beliefs, such as Isaac Newton for working out the physics.

[–]zeamaize 0 points1 point ago

I appreciate that you're just speaking truth to power, but this is /r/atheism.

You have a better chance of getting the KKK to vote for Obama.

[–]sharked 1 point2 points ago

Government foreign policy sends airplanes into buildings.

[–]zeamaize -2 points-1 points ago

And atheism murders millions in communist purges.

Or we could be adults, drop our bigotry and hate and realize it is politics that kill people.

[–]Bjoernzor 0 points1 point ago

B-but Politics is just an excuse....

Same argument as for religion not causing hurt. But in reality, both are true. Both cause hurt. We base our behavior on religion and politics both.

[–]dat_franco-american 1 point2 points ago

Incorrect. Atheism does not murder people, nothing is done in the "name of atheism". Communism seeks to purge religion because religion and communism are not compatible. Unlike organized religion, atheism is not a singular block, atheism is a personal choice that has nothing to do with anyone else. To say atheism murders people is akin to saying that vegetarians commit genocide because Hitler was vegetarian.

[–]zeamaize -4 points-3 points ago

You are a naive fool.

Incorrect. Atheism does not murder people, nothing is done in the "name of atheism".

Plenty of things are, just as plenty if things attributed to religion (9/11 for instance) are actually done in the name of politics.

Communism seeks to purge religion because religion and communism are not compatible. Unlike organized religion, atheism is not a singular block, atheism is a personal choice that has nothing to do with anyone else.

Religion is not an organized block, it's a personal relationship with the divine. I know I plenty of atheist meetings and organizations.

To say atheism murders people is akin to saying that vegetarians commit genocide because Hitler was vegetarian.

Yeah... No. It isn't. But you are too far gone for reason aren't you?

[–]-Hastis- 0 points1 point ago

"Incorrect. Atheism does not murder people, nothing is done in the "name of atheism"."

Plenty of things are, just as plenty if things attributed to religion (9/11 for instance) are actually done in the name of politics.

That didn't made any sense... you just told us that thing that people think are done in the name of atheism are in reality done in the name of politics..

Religion is not an organized block, it's a personal relationship with the divine.

Inside an organized block...

Yeah... No. It isn't. But you are too far gone for reason aren't you?

A better example is saying that Hitler committed genocide in the name of not believing in the Planet X...

[–]zeamaize 0 points1 point ago

That didn't made any sense... you just told us that thing that people think are done in the name of atheism are in reality done in the name of politics..

And I still hold to this. But being done in the "name of atheism" or the "name of religion" can still be attached as a false flag or boiler plate, especially for the simple minded. As I said, but you lacked the critical reading skills to understand, plenty of things are attributed to religion/atheism that are actually done for political reasons.

Very few, if anything, have a religious/atheistic motivation.

People do terrible things for power, money, and property.

Inside an organized block...

Nope, but don't let facts interfere with your ignorance, especially since it helps justify your bigotry.

A better example is saying that Hitler committed genocide in the name of not believing in the Planet X...

Nope, not at all. But again, you seem pretty happy with your ignorance and bigotry, so carry on. Not worth my time.

[–]-Hastis- 0 points1 point ago

You seem to pretty happy with telling everyone they are ignorant bigot without being able to tell why you think they are. Making us wonder who is the real ignorant bigot here..

You also seem to draw a line between politics and religions that is not as strong as you think it is... They both influence each other and try to gain power working together...

[–]zeamaize 0 points1 point ago

You seem to pretty happy with telling everyone they are ignorant bigot without being able to tell why you think they are. Making us wonder who is the real ignorant bigot here..

I've clearly stated where the ignorance and bigotry lies. It lies in false accusations and a clear (almost willful) inability to research and understand history.

You also seem to draw a line between politics and religions that is not as strong as you think it is... They both influence each other and try to gain power working together...

Yes, yes, it's all some creepy anti-atheist conspiracy, isn't it?

ಠ_ಠ

[–]-Hastis- 0 points1 point ago

How is it a conspiracy? It is and has been done wide open in front of everyone for ages... Separation of church and states values are in part a response to that. Even if it has been attacked since then, by huge bigot like Pat Robertson...

Edit: But please, if you know things that I do not, and care to show me why I'm wrong with evidences (or reading suggestions, books/websites), please feel free to do so.

[–]zeamaize 0 points1 point ago

I agree, there are a lot of atheists and agnostics who seek to win Christian votes by faking their religion. But that isn't a political/religious connection. It's ass holes exploiting a handful of dumb people.

It doesn't work on most people. For most people, they vote on the issues, or the Red/Blue nature of the politician, the effect is negligible.

Hating america is not a registered religion. You're doing it wrong. Mostly by spreading more hatred.

Every bloody year with this, it was more than a decade ago, the people you are fighting have suffered way more civilian casualties, hell the Taliban is essentially surrendering, so much is going on yet america clings to one thing from more than a decade ago to cry victim even after they bomb the fuck out of countries that had no connection to the events.

[–]IKnowYouAndHateYou -4 points-3 points ago

Science has never flown me to the moon, and I resent that, as apparently it does that for everyone.
