I never understood why, when the third edition of Oregon Trail was impressively realistic for a PC game at the time, Scholastic decided to make the fifth edition looks like a Magic Schoolbus cartoon. I was disappoint.

I recently played Oregon Trail for the first time on an emulator, as a Carpenter, and actually made it all the way to Oregon. I lost my entire family to a combination of drowning, fever, and starvation, but I myself made it.

I didn't bother running through it again, but I assume this is some heroic feat for a first timer?

If there's one thing that this game taught me, it's that apparently crossing a river in a covered wagon is a complete crap shoot, and there is no such thing as a safe and effective way to cross, despite thousands of years of human ingenuity and the existence of long sticks to check how deep the river is.
