Then you have -this- type. The kind that fits all the criteria for a great gal, but is so nervous that she makes guys think she isn't interested! I'm mostly pulling your leg here, guys (including myself) do this a lot too. I've had many situations where I thought the other person wasn't interested, so I stopped trying to hit on them, and they later admit that they were interested, but also stopped trying because they thought I wasn't.

You should make more forward approaches. As in, make sure they know you like them to some degree or are interested. Eventually, they'll give signs they are interested or not interested, though you'll have to turn up the heat a little bit.

    I don't really think he's being a straight-out troll, he's just questioning me. It's an internet forum and I said something that people could misconstrue as "arrogant," so I knew perfectly well that it was a possibility. He hasn't really said anything explicitly abusive or rude (somebody called me a "feminazi cunt" and told me to "die" the other day because I brought up women's rights... on a thread about women's rights) so I don't mind talking to him. By comparison, he's a perfect gentleman, lol.

    (I actually have three cats. My boyfriend is currently playing Guild Wars 2 and swearing.)

    How do you define your intelligence? I'm not really commenting on the conversation I'm just curious. Intelligence is defined many, many different ways and I want to know your intellectual strengths, as you seem to be pretty secure about it (good thing). I've never really judged my own intelligence, I'm just trying to make the team.

    I enjoy learning something new in my subject area and pick up things fairly well. I study languages and cultures, and I do pretty well at it (although I am now approaching my final year of uni and am kinda worried about how I'll do in the exams. I'm finding a particular aspect of the course difficult and rather frustrating because I don't feel like I'm improving.) There is plenty I do not know about my own chosen field, which can be a little disheartening sometimes but I do my best.

    I think it's because smart is such a broad term, people's first reaction is that it's arrogant, because they assume you mean on all fronts. They think "well how can someone who can't see themselves in the third person and lives in their own mind declare themselves intelligent?".

    I understood what you were saying though, which is why I asked. Also it gave an opportunity to explain what you meant. Ignore the downvotes, I've taken the stance that if people aren't even willing to have a conversation with you their opinion doesn't really matter much.

Most people recognize when someone possesses equal, greater, or lesser mental faculties without them having to say so.

        A good point, but in this particular context I think it is obvious what form of "smartness" is being referred to.

        I don't think there's any harm in me recognising a strength I have. It's not like I see myself as some kind of super genius, I'm just aware that I am of vaguely "above average" intelligence, at least academically. The fact I recognise that does not make me some kind of idiot. There are manifold other things in my life that I'm not good at.

        This is also on a thread about a joke, so I was only making a light-hearted comment... no need to read into it too much.

            Everyone here is so sure that they're smart girls, but you're really not.

            You're not smart because you're good at the job you specialize in. You're not smart because you can spell on the internet/in texts. You're not smart because you're a college student that gets all As.

            Intelligence is adaptable. Truly intelligent people know how to socialize; not just be obsessively knowledgable about a single subject or field. This applies to men and women. Anyone who says "I'm lonely because I'm smart" just isn't thinking hard enough.

            This is true enough in its criticism so I upvoted you, but intelligence is still a far wider, and a far more effected aspect of people than you desribe.

            There are many intelligent people who are, due to the naturally chaotic nature of biology, affected by the way their brain is made up, and are strong in different areas.

            Different kinds of intelligence have been proposed to describe this, in an extreme example, I have seen children with autism exhibit extraordinary mental capacity for certain things, but stumble over other things that normally functioning people could do with relative ease. Socialising with others stands out as an example of that.

            This comment also sort of reminds me of me a few years ago, trying to fault those that just study without questioning the validity of what they are told to do.

            You should go play some D&D. There is a definite difference between intelligence and charisma. Being charismatic doesn't make you intelligent or vice versa. Yes charisma is important in manipulating others. It will also get you farther in life/open more doors right off the bat than intelligence. Intelligence is the underlying sustaining trait that will serve you after you're done shaking hands and selling yourself (mentally) to others. The third trait which you seem to ignore is wisdom. You don't have to be smart or charismatic to be wise, but wisdom greatly aids either of these traits. Many people tend to lump in wisdom with intelligence because many wise people have at least moderate intelligence, but I've seen many smart people make stupid choice after stupid choice. Being wise and charismatic will lead to enduring relationships with a high utility. Being wise and intelligent will lead to a successful personal life. Being charismatic and intelligent will lead to a successful professional life. Having all three is something that only few people achieve, but you would ultimately find balance and be able to pursue unhindered personal contentment.
