This thing eats Man-O-Wars, stores the venom, and is able to actually deliver a sting even more powerful than the creature it eats because of this.

Good lord this thing is awesome.

[–]kindofawardance 349 points350 points ago

I didn't know about the Man-O-wars, but I knew about the eating of the stinging sea anenomes, and that they don't actually store the venom, but swallow the entire stinging mechanism whole. That mechanism then travels through the body of the little dude and ends up where it can be put to best use for stinging bitches, and now that I've written this out i realize I may be talking about the fiesta sea slug, actually.

[–]fisticuffsmanship 354 points355 points ago

Aw man, the fiesta slug with the citrus salsa and the red tortillas, definitely the bomb

[–]SimBech 159 points160 points ago

saw this in r/ImGoingToHellForThis yesterday

[–]Yugios 35 points36 points ago

That seems pretty weak for /r/ImGoingToHellForThis compared to what I've seen. Is it getting watered down in the same manner that /r/WTF was?

[–]EvilSockPuppet 24 points25 points ago

There needs to be an /r/mildlyoffensive so people can post that kind if stuff elsewhere.

[–]Dekanuva 2 points3 points ago

There IS an /r/mildlyoffensive.

[–]bastard_thought 3 points4 points ago

If by "watered down" you mean less racist, then yes, probably? I haven't checked in a while.

[–]JudgeWhoAllowsStuff 24 points25 points ago

Wimmy wam wam wazzle.

[–]Skeezin 58 points59 points ago

However, that is a badass slug you have there.

[–]PasswordLost 279 points280 points ago

[–]BaobhanSith 113 points114 points ago

Both compelling arguments, it must be said.

[–]DZilla07 33 points34 points ago

Was that even English?

[–]zBodude 76 points77 points ago

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

[–]wanderlvst 8 points9 points ago

your further than is the faget op went. so way far.

[–]qball8001 23 points24 points ago

Sea creatures, if that is even the correct term, are just so cool to look at.

[–]Randamba 84 points85 points ago

They are actually early stage pokemon. I mean look at them, They're awesome to look at, and they can learn new abilities by defeating(eating) their enemies(prey).

Awesome Sea Pokemon.

[–]tonto500 58 points59 points ago

Don't you mean they learn new abilities by defeating and eating their anemones?

[–]six_legged_heaven 43 points44 points ago

You think you're joking... this is Pikachu!

Taken in Izu, about 100km south-west of Tokyo.

[–]Sunburntmonkey 4 points5 points ago

I can even see a thundersmash charging at its tips

[–]propagandapanda831 19 points20 points ago

A box jellyfish is really just the third evolution of tentacool.

[–]asherrd 22 points23 points ago

Correction, many are also Final Fantasy creatures. Glaucus atlanticus especially.

[–]_Noise 3 points4 points ago

When they're poisonous...

[–]DerivativeMonster 7 points8 points ago

Isn't that called a Spanish Shawl?

[–]kindofawardance 7 points8 points ago

probably, bruh. I googled fiesta sea slug and found that image. I learned everything I know on the subject of aforementioned sea slugs from a children's illustrated guide about... 22 years ago?

[–]DerivativeMonster 3 points4 points ago

Oh haha I used to work at an aquarium so I'm an insufferable killjoy when it comes to sealife. I'm jealous you got to see them out in the wild!

[–]drmabuse123 27 points28 points ago

[–]danguro 94 points95 points ago

You are what you eat

[–]drum_playing_twig 163 points164 points ago

Hey did you just call me a kentucky fried chicken?

[–]itslikeboo 697 points698 points ago

no I think he called you a dick

[–]polite_fox 132 points133 points ago

I see what you did there. It wasn't very nice of you though.

[–]chicksdigthelongdisc 133 points134 points ago

At least we know this guy always goes down on his lady

[–]BarnabyJon3s 18 points19 points ago

Took me a minute. Nods head in approval.

[–]chefman777 24 points25 points ago

Apply lukewarm water to area of burn.

[–]frisky123 8 points9 points ago

drum_playing_twig's favourite meal.

[–]Chris4 8 points9 points ago

I was gritting my teeth hoping it wouldn't be a picture of a dick. I wasn't disappointed.

[–]CrunchyRaddish 9 points10 points ago

If so, you are absolutely delicious.

[–]timsailr 4 points5 points ago

And although crunchy, you are not

[–]Bromskloss 14 points15 points ago

Luke, I ate your father.

[–]Iamageneric 3 points4 points ago

And I ate his mother

[–]synicalx1 14 points15 points ago

That's weird, I don't recall eating a sex god.

oh yeah I went there

[–]meancommentredditor 62 points63 points ago

You did go there, but you went there alone.

[–]Epic_baconnage 2 points3 points ago

[–]vertigo1083 61 points62 points ago

I take it that this is a very juvenile specimen in the photo?

Ive seen Man-O-Wars the size of small sedans while touring on an aircraft carrier.

I would very much like to see this species in all it's glory.

Edit: my mistake, actually. All these years what I thought was actually a man-o-war was really along the lines of this. After about 20 minutes of research, I realized the moron standing next to me who told me it was a man-o-war with such conviction, was actually wrong. Don't get me wrong, seeing things like this in the ocean made me fear the open water with extreme prejudice. Add on the shark feeding frenzies after garbage dumps, eels with finger-sized teeth, and did I mention the sharks? Enough for a lifetime of fucking nopes.

Apparently, man-o-wars dont get any bigger than 3 feet or so, and the tentacles max out at like 15 feet.

[–]kivvi 61 points62 points ago

These are not juvenile specimens -- that is as large and glorious as they get. They steal the nematocysts (stinging cells) and use them as their own weapon. I don't remember how they eat them though (slowly...?), just that they're immune to the stings.

qualifications: sleeping through invertebrate zoology

edit: also, pretty sure they're not rare, a friend got pictures of them in south africa and I was under the impression they were highly widespread.

[–]p0kes 19 points20 points ago

So, how is the person in the photo holding it, if it is highly poisonous?

[–]Sheather 46 points47 points ago

If that one has been raised in controlled environments, then it may not have been fed man-o-war nematocysts. As it doesn't produce any of its own venom, if it hasn't ingested any then it is harmless.

[–]spoonfulofchris 19 points20 points ago

Much like captive raised dendrobates (poison dart frogs).

[–]Sheather 7 points8 points ago

Oooh really? That is an interesting one. I had been under the impression that they'd have their toxins regardless. TIL

[–]halomomma 3 points4 points ago

You can still handle a wild dendrobates, just don't do it with any open sores or cuts on your hands.
Source: I did it in Costa Rica/Nicaragua.

[–]tuesdayswithMrAaron 3 points4 points ago

TIL

[–]p0kes 0 points1 point ago

Wow, you're pretty much the smartest Sheather I know!

[–]Sheather 4 points5 points ago

My alternative was "The karma was worth the price of his life."

[–]EnlightenedConstruct 2 points3 points ago

Not that carefully from the looks of it...

[–]kindofawardance 22 points23 points ago

their mouths and digestive tracts allow them to swallow the entire stinging mechanism whole, without triggering it, and then it moves through their bodies to the ends of their probity probes. see my above comment posted a scant 5 minutes before yours, Sleepy McZoology

[–]NotBatman374 10 points11 points ago

Yeah the sea is basically where earth stores its nightmares.

[–]thomasjs 10 points11 points ago

Nope it stays that size but it can poison and kill the Man-O-War. Just think of a human getting killed by a spider bite. We may be huge compared to most spiders but they are still a threat.

[–]never_knows_best 4 points5 points ago

Fucking spiders

[–]BlahblahNomad 9 points10 points ago

You dont have to be large to be powerful.

The smallest of scorpions have the worst sting.

The normal size of this species is up to 3 cm.

[–]DONOTRECHARGE 2 points3 points ago

Small claws, powerful sting. And vice versa.

[–]JamesDaniels 24 points25 points ago

Can we eat it somehow and does it taste good?

[–]vetlemakt 7 points8 points ago

I like how you think: can we eat it somehow? This is now my new approach to anything. Yes, dem girls be included.

[–]maxcaliburx 6 points7 points ago

I was about to say: so cute I wanna eat it.

[–]lgmjon64 131 points132 points ago

Most nudibranchs are beautiful. On my first scuba dive after I certified, I found a Spanish Shawl nudibranch. To date still my favorite thing I've seen.

[–]Imstillawake 31 points32 points ago

Seen many nudibranches in the Hawaiian Islands. They are eerily beautiful and easy to pass by if you don't know what you are looking for.

[–]justmystepladder 20 points21 points ago

most of them stay remarkably small. I've had mixed experiences with them (i've kept several species in my aquariums; some by choice and some not...) they are definitely easy to miss if you don't know what signs and shapes you're looking for. wonderfully fascinating creatures though. :)

[–]baculumsucker 19 points20 points ago

What do you mean "some by choice and some not"?

[–]justmystepladder 57 points58 points ago

often times in the salt water hobby you get what are known as hitch-hikers. Sometimes they come in on live rock (what is used as a natural source of chemical filtration in salt water tanks), sometimes on coral, etc. Even with proper quarantine periods a lot of the time you can miss eggs, and then they hatch after being added to your main tank. Then one day you look in and BAM you've got a bunch of little nudis or worms or whatever crawling around in your tank. When you get nuisance nudibranchs it's usually not a big deal unless they're a type that eats coral - if they don't have their specific food-source (most nudis only eat one thing and one thing only) they just starve to death and then no more little slugs.

that's why you don't see people keeping some of the really badass looking nudis like the one in the OP. You'd also have to keep man-o-wars for it to eat.... jellies are hard to keep in general (they need HIGH levels of filtration, but almost zero current).. let alone jellies that can seriously f*** your shit up.

[–]Imstillawake 13 points14 points ago

Damn you know a lot more about this than me. How large of a set up do you have?

[–]justmystepladder 36 points37 points ago

My largest display was only a 30 gallon long. I've got/had several tanks (ranging from 2.5 gallons up to 218). The whole system was around 50 gallons - I had a full sump/refugium underneath which housed lots of worms (and other detrivores like small starfish and sponges) and several types of macroalgaes (sea weeds) as well as my skimmer, return pump, etc etc etc.

Eventually I'd like to get my 120 Gallon setup as a full reef - I tore down my last salt tank following the loss of my clown fish.. it was heart breaking and I just couldn't handle it with everything else that was going on. The only reason I haven't already is the increased setup cost (mainly in lighting and rock) ...another 200-500 for lights, 100+ for a topoff system to battle the increased evap from the hotter lights and larger surface area, and rock that costs between 2.50 and 10 bucks per lb (when I need about .75lb/gallon) adds up REALLY REALLY quickly.

I'm also a gearhead, so most of my time and money goes into my cars during the winter so that I can show during the summer. When I'm home during the summer I sink money into my tanks.

EDIT - it is worth mentioning that the larger a tank you have, the easier they are to keep. more water = more stability (temperature, salinity, pH, calcium, alk, and nitrogen levels mainly). Stability in the chemistry of your water is key, and is what keeps all your critters (coral, giant clams, anemones, fish, crabs, shrimp, starfish, worms, sponges, snails, abalones, etc etc etc.) happy and growing steadily. If you or anyone else is interested in maybe starting a tank send me a PM and I'll gladly help you myself as well as direct you to more information and some good communities.

[–]Avista 10 points11 points ago

As requested, a few views of the tank and its residents. Its a wonderful hobby, I hope to be back into it soon.

Sorry that they're all shitty cell pics. Hopefully this gives a tiny glimpse into how beautiful marine life is, and why it's worth saving!

[–]Boshaft 14 points15 points ago

Shameless plug for /r/Aquariums :)

[–]Avista 8 points9 points ago

Lovely. And yes, it's a neat hobby. You can just lose yourself gazing into an aquarium.
I've had a freshwater aquarium myself that I'm looking to setup again, and I would love to splash some cash and find the time to build a saltwater set one day. Freshwater is nice and cozy, but you can't beat the beauty of some of the species you can get for a saltwater tank. Stunning.

Thanks, man.

[–]manjunaths 5 points6 points ago

Although I don't understand most of the things you are saying, this is the single most awesome information I've gathered from Reddit. Thank you.

[–]tapplewhack 4 points5 points ago

Yep. This killed 6 of my bamboo sharks. Came home one day to find that the water was extremely cloudy and the sharks were pumping (breathing) really hard. It was a bacteria bloom that probably came in with some of the rocks that I put in the tank. It wasn't too awful, I raise babies for the local aquarium (that's how I had 6 of them in one tank, the aquarium exchanges them when they get too big) and they have something like 270 of them in a gigantic holding tank. They were a trial before I raised important sharks. But it still sucked, they were my first sharks and they were so cool.

Luckily, the aquarium knew that there was no way I could have caused or prevented that and, after taking more precautions, I'm happily raising some of their hybrid sharks.

[–]iamrory 4 points5 points ago

Last time this was posted I think some aquarium guy said certain kinds make really easy pets. Maybe the robots will show up and we can find out.

[–]justmystepladder 2 points3 points ago

Lettuce nudibranchs can be kept fairly easily. You just a tank with certain macroalgae and nothing that will harm them (pumps, crabs, etc) and you're good to go :)

They multiply at a decent rate though... So that can become an issue.

[–]Prof_Toke 4 points5 points ago

Are you the last comment on this video I looked up to find out what a Spanish Shawl was?

It's a amazing how many people think the Necronomicon is a real thing and not just something Lovecraft made up.

Of course, the fact that various people have capitalized on Lovecraft et al's popularity and published books titled "The Necronomicon" so you can actually buy one adds to the confusion. Once, back before the internet, in order to win an argument I had to dig up a reference to an actual letter from Lovecraft explaining that he'd made up the whole thing. The person I was arguing with wasn't convinced even then, he was sure that Lovecraft was just trying to cover up for the truth or something.

[–]TempestFunk 36 points37 points ago

G. atlanticus preys on other, larger pelagic organisms: the dangerously venomous Portuguese Man o' War Physalia physalis...Because Glaucus stores the venom, it can produce a more powerful and deadly sting than the Man o' War upon which it feeds

Venomous as fuck

[–]ghostintheattic 58 points59 points ago

I wonder how they taste

[–]Forrest_Hansen 26 points27 points ago

My guess is like those candy blue whales.

[–]KaSSl0[S] 53 points54 points ago

Probably pretty good with some horseradish and hot sauce.

[–]BackScratcher 59 points60 points ago

Just like everything else.

[–]skarface6 2 points3 points ago

Just not people. Nothing tastes good when it sprints away after only 1 good bite.

[–]madsplatter 20 points21 points ago

That's not saying much. Batter fry my belt and it would be delicious with some horseradish and hot sauce.

[–]IceVest 24 points25 points ago

Mmm belt

[–]Womec 11 points12 points ago

I feel like the venom it stores will kill you. Also it will probaby burn way more than horseradish.

[–]Hazelrat10 39 points40 points ago

Wash it down with some milk and antivenom.

[–]Wickad 29 points30 points ago

These guys wash up on the beach every so often on the NSW south coast - Australia, They are blue because they eat the blue bottles and suck their poison up to use it again on other sea creatures. They do look really awesome though!

[–]drum_playing_twig 54 points55 points ago

I read that as NSFW south coast and imagined a nudist beach or something.

[–]aedeos 23 points24 points ago

Australia, the NSFL Coast.

[–]sp00kyd00m 19 points20 points ago

heh.. blue bottles... sounds a lot cuter than man o' war. but i guess if you live in australia you see enough deadly, venomous things to just see man o' wars as adorable floaty blue bottles.

[–]callmelucky 11 points12 points ago

Blue bottles are absolutely not the same as Man O Wars. They are small, bright blue jellyfish that can give a pretty unpleasant sting, but nothing life threatening. Maybe if you have allergies... They wash up on Australian beaches all the freaking time, and are much less of a concern than, say, stonefish.

EDIT: I was wrong, blue bottles are the same as man o wars. IGNORE ME!

[–]Loborin 6 points7 points ago

stonefish?

[–]armoredporpoise 26 points27 points ago

imagine a rock with teeth and it can kill you. also this rock breathes water and is invisible. Ta da. Stonefish.

[–]CanadianMutton 8 points9 points ago

Stonefish Apparently painful as hell.

As for blue bottles/ portugese man of war....

Blue Bottle Jellyfish (Portuguese Man of War) (Physalia utriculus) In Australia and New Zealand, this jellyfish is known as the blue bottle, due to its colour and shape when strewn on a beach. Elsewhere in the world it is known as the "Portuguese Man o War" as it is said to look like a Portuguese battleship with a sail.

The Portuguese Man O' War (Physalia physalis), also known as the Portuguese Man-Of-War, Man-Of-War, or Bluebottle.

The Blue Bottle, or Portuguese Man o' War, is a common, if unwelcome, summer visitor to Sydney beaches. At the mercy of the wind, they are sometimes blown into shallow waters, and often wash up onto the beach.

Seems to be the same thing.

[–]callmelucky 10 points11 points ago

Thank you, I was wrong.

[–]ABrightShadow 3 points4 points ago

It's a fish that looks similar to a stone, and hides around beaches that have rock surfaces in the deeper water. They can also be under Jetties/Piers too. Very very painful to step on. From memory, when you step on one, the spikes on it's back stick straight up into your foot, and you get some sort of venom in you. If you do some searches you can find them pretty easily. I am too lazy to link for you sorry. But not lazy enough to write this out.

Awaaaaaaaay

[–]knoxblox 87 points88 points ago

reset my game like 400 times trying to get him, then one game he comes up black. I sit there confused for a minute, then my brain clicks on, A SHINY FUCKING LEGENDARY ARE YOU SHITTING ME. I was losing my mind trying to make sure I didnt accidentally kill him. thank Christ the ultra ball finally worked that game.

[–]twelvefortyAM 39 points40 points ago

Rayquaza is one of the coolest shinies, too.

[–]PosiedonsSaltyAnus 5 points6 points ago

Metagross bro.

[–]cXs808 22 points23 points ago

If you were younger me, you would have no fucking clue what Rayquaza is.

[–]MrPangolin 17 points18 points ago

Catching a Rayquaza with a Pokeball is really easy. Just damage him to red, use yawn, then throw your pokeball while inputting "select select select select left right left down."

[–]Jumin 9 points10 points ago

Go look at his catch rate and come back and tell me it's easy.

NEVER MIND I AM DUMB.

[–]pU8O5E439Mruz47w 28 points29 points ago

The effect of reducing HP diminishes with lower catch rates, and the effect of inflicting status diminishes with higher catch rates. Regardless of catch rate, reducing the HP does not increase chances of capture at less than ½ HP with Great Balls, and ⅓ HP with other balls.

Oh my... to think of the number of times I agonized over getting the catch down to the tiniest sliver of health...

/r/atheism is so arrogant, they feel they can twist anything into that subreddit for self gratification.

[–]jhound 7 points8 points ago

Well, I guess not everyone has seen the left picture...

[–]lickthecowhappy 3 points4 points ago

I swear it's posted every month.

[–]kearnsyl 9 points10 points ago

I remember I found these at my local beach (Manly, Sydney, Australia) after a week long wave of bluebottles washing up, nobody had any idea what they were, we even took one home in a cup to keep, as a 10 year old, I thought they were the most mystical things I had ever seen... They still are 👍

[–]sporkachoon 4 points5 points ago

Did you find it on the ground? Does it emulate the ocean sound?

[–]0illuminati0 7 points8 points ago

"F*ckn rule 42" "ckn rule 42" "RULE 42" "42" ?O.o?

34 mate... 34

[–]dont_yell_atME 8 points9 points ago

Now Imagine that ten times bigger

[–]Bored_At_Night 27 points28 points ago

10 times bigger isn't much of a concern. I just want one big enough to ride.

[–]sp00kyd00m 11 points12 points ago

i just want one big enough to filet.

[–]BlahblahNomad 8 points9 points ago

That would be quite intimidating, at 30cm.

[–]BigToer 7 points8 points ago

I have a suspiscion this creature is some giant internet conspiracy. The wiki article says it eats the Portuguese man'o'war.....really.....REALLY?!

[–]sp00kyd00m 9 points10 points ago

"and it shits mako sharks right??"

[–]topcat512 11 points12 points ago

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING? IT LOOKS LIKE IT CAME STRAIGHT OUT OF FINAL FANTASY.

[–]TacoPrince 1 point2 points ago

*most beautiful THINGS EVER!

[–]ColorfrogInc 3 points4 points ago

[–]thatusernameisal 6 points7 points ago

Final Fantasy Slug.

[–]avocadoisdelicious 5 points6 points ago

OH MY GOD!

I have been looking forever for this! I remember, about 5 years ago, in a small beach town near where I live, there was one day thousands of these things washed up on the beach. No-one knew what they were! They were incredibly weird-looking yet beautiful and very squishy.

[–]rawlence 7 points8 points ago

But will it blend?

[–]newpong 0 points1 point ago

well, that looks tasty

[–]Fish_with_a_fez 2 points3 points ago

Are they really that rare? I live in Hawaii and one day hundreds of them washed up on the beach. We took a few and put them in a container and whenever we turned on the air thing they started battling.

[–]BackwerdsMan 2 points3 points ago

These really aren't that rare.

[–]ActApalled 0 points1 point ago

I expect to be able to summon this in the next Final Fantasy game

[–]vicschuldiner 0 points1 point ago

The Glaucus Atlanticus is like the evolved form of the Glaucilla Marginata.

[–]SparxD 0 points1 point ago

That thing reminds me of a Mandelbrot set....

[–]joeslo 7 points8 points ago

Finally a real life Pokemon

[–]actis2 19 points20 points ago

Forgetting about someone?

[–]Microchaton 3 points4 points ago

Its french name is Axoloto :o

[–]totemair 8 points9 points ago

Actually, many of the original Pokemon are based on real life organisms.

For example, Vileplume and the Rafflesia arnoldii

[–]goodbye9hello10 6 points7 points ago

That thing is a fucking baller. That shits eats poisonous jelly fish and steals their venom and they produce an even more dangerous venom/bite with it. That's crazy. This thing is awesome.

[–]diabolotry 5 points6 points ago

Looks tasty.

[–]SexyLoverBoy 4 points5 points ago

Doesnt seem to be a rare find on reddit however...

[–]corwin01 3 points4 points ago

Mmmmm fractalicious

[–]tronn4 2 points3 points ago

Wasn't the blue dragon the name of that gay bar in police academy?

[–]openback 5 points6 points ago

That would be the Blue Oyster. I will now hear those damn horns that play each time it's shown in my head for hours.

[–]OldManSteve 1 point2 points ago

This looks like something out of a Final Fantasy game.

Beautiful.

[–]dawn_of_liam -1 points0 points ago

Baby ningin.

[–]KianKP 0 points1 point ago

The pic on the right looks kinda like a blue Licker β from Resident Evil

[–]Ewalkk -1 points0 points ago

I must consume it, to gain it's awesome powers

[–]al0newestand 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a Final Fantasy boss.

[–]Mrbick -1 points0 points ago

Guy's I have never seen anything like this before, I need to get out more.

[–]Drag0nfruit -1 points0 points ago

Is there any National Geographic or BBC documentary about it?

[–]AVeryMadFish -1 points0 points ago

Now THAT is impressive.
