I am almost certain that this is Korean, and not Japanese.

[–]clearbeacon 147 points148 points ago

That's DEFINITELY Korean. Changmin from the defunct boy band DBSK.

EDIT: Getting flak for saying defunct. Changmin from "the still promoting, but not quite the same" DBSK.

[–]housnap 59 points60 points ago

I was going to say. The only time I'm useful on reddit is when I'm identifying Korean boy banders. (I'm the founder of r/dbsk, with 6 lovely suscribers. Hilariously sad)

[–]Fatvod 4 points5 points ago

Have you ever heard of 2pm?

[–]housnap 2 points3 points ago

Ten points outta ten!

Yeah I kept up with the kpop scene pretty heavily about...2 years ago? I can name almost everybody (in both guys and girl groups) who was popular then. DBSK was my first and last love, but I still keep up with kpop here and there via Omona and r/kpop.

[–]hubwub 34 points35 points ago

DBSK ain't defunct. Still acting as a duo instead of a five member boyband.

[–]h2sbacteria 43 points44 points ago

Just like N'Sync isn't dead it's just a one man show now instead of a five member band.

[–]MajorLeeScrewed 6 points7 points ago

Except they don't perform under Nsync anymore and the duo still perform under TVXQ.

[–]hubwub 7 points8 points ago

N`Sync was never coming back after releasing Celebrity. The whole album reeked of Justin Timberlake's demo cd as the rest of the guys acted like back-up singers. All hopes of them coming back together are slim and I'd rather have JT making music again than being atrocious on my movie screen.

[–]iamsmooth 13 points14 points ago

Eh? I don't know if I'm going to get downvoted for saying this... but I like JT more as an actor than as a musician. He's not terrible in movies, but I'm not a fan of his [style of] music.

[–]EternalAssasin 44 points45 points ago

[–]EternalAssasin 23 points24 points ago

Oh silly Great Leader, that's not cake!

[–]MrT-1000 33 points34 points ago

it's OK Great Leader, it was only my arm. I am grateful that you have blessed me with 2!

[–]EternalAssasin 13 points14 points ago

I will make a cake with my other arm if that is what you... oh Great Leader, that is the diplomat from Iran, not cake!

[–]be0wulf 11 points12 points ago

But wait, if they claim that there's only one Korea, doesn't that make North Korea Best Korea by default?

[–]IgnosticZealot 3 points4 points ago

That's the democratic people's republic of Korea to you!

[–]Kash87 23 points24 points ago

Has there been a Kim Jong Il or Kim Jong Un version of Gangnam Style yet??

[–]Sean88888 82 points83 points ago

[–]ShrimpCrackers 31 points32 points ago

To be honest though, Kim Jung Un has been (relatively) bringing lots of reforms to North Korea. There is some hope.

[–]ZiggyZombie 8 points9 points ago

That hope is but a trickle or sunlight let in by the top to only to be squashed to show the true power of the party.

[–]ShrimpCrackers 4 points5 points ago

It's a pandora's box. But if he wants to cement himself in history...

I mean look at the Dalai Lama. That dude gave up power even though his fervent followers refused to let him. He even questions Tibetan Buddhism and even wrote an entire book about it.

There is a reason why early Dalai Lamas weren't so praised or popular and the current one had to build it up too. Perhaps Kim Jung Un could break the chain since he was educated abroad. OR... he might just continue the same.

Still he has to contend with his party. I hope there is some gradual change, even though it's like a Pandora's box sliver of hope.

Funny how the average Caucasian has darker skin than average Asians.

[–]Viend 11 points12 points ago

That Korean girl kinda looks Chinese, but the Chinese is unmistakably Chinese.

[–]artydecor 11 points12 points ago

The Chinese are actually quite diverse. Even though they are grouped as "Han Chinese" that's more of a cultural identity that was forced by the various emperors for millennia.

So it wouldn't be surprising to find Chinese folks that look Korean, Japanese, Mongolian, etc.

[–]mOdQuArK 5 points6 points ago

You would regret saying that within the hearing of my Korean grandparents...

[–]ShakeweightPro 10 points11 points ago

Why, because he would have to repeat it so many times?

[–]Hellothereawesome 31 points32 points ago

[–]Verteros 10 points11 points ago

All the evidence you should need is the question of getting fat, that is illegal in Japan.

[–]join_the_sith 19 points20 points ago

Definitely Korean, the two people in the photo look Korean, not Japanese. Is it really that difficult to tell Asian races apart?

[–]gods_ent 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, many of my native Japanese friends admitted that they had a hard time telling. They said they could recognize other Japanese usually but were never sure the difference between others, but isn't that to be expected when you're exposed to mostly one group of people your whole life?

When I visited S.K. with my Japanese ex, he kept getting mistaken for Korean. On a few different occasions when he told them he was Japanese they joked that he was too tall to be Japanese (he's something like 6'1" or 6'2") and couldn't believe they were mistaken.

I feel like it's easiest to tell other races apart if I see their styling of clothes/hair since they differ between countries. With just face-shots I have more trouble, though Japanese teeth are generally worse so that's a clue. I am amazed and dubious of anyone who claims they can always tell the different race of every Asian by just looking at his/her face. There are too many similarities between groups and too many variations within groups to make it easily distinguishable.

Still, although I don't blame OP for not immediately being able to tell the difference, it would have taken them a whole 2 seconds to google before posting and looking stupid.

[–]FoozleMoozle 8 points9 points ago

Yes, if you've never been corrected about it or haven't seen many examples of Koreans versus Chinese versus Japanese!

[–]Shippoyasha 6 points7 points ago

Sometimes it can be really hard by the facial features alone. There's a ton of Korean people who look Japanese and Japanese who look Korean. Not to mention they share a similar ancestry more so than any other two Asian nations.

It's mostly that clothing and hair trends are a bit different. Not to mention most well known soap operas in the world now are Korean. Not to mention there's a LOT of Korean soaps.

[–]its_a_sex_reference 8 points9 points ago

Maybe we should discuss Asian races further? At my place? We could play boggle.

[–]moogleiii 2 points3 points ago

I was gonna say...this seemed like Kdrama circa 1999

[–]theslowcrap 3 points4 points ago

Or we can just say Asian. Asians also have trouble distinguishing between Europeans.

[–]JackassPenguinass 29 points30 points ago

Well - Europeans have trouble distinguishing other Europeans... without hearing them talk.

Can you tell the difference between a Northern German, a Pole and a Dane, just by looking at them?

Korea* For anyone who wants to know this is Shim Changmin it's from DBSK's mini-drama Unforgettable Love.

[–]cdrew430 32 points33 points ago

What is this from?

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 160 points161 points ago

It's from Banjun Theater, a Korean TV show featuring TBXQ, a popular boy band. This particular episode is Unforgettable Love. The guy is Changmin, a popular K-Pop singer, and the girl's name is Kim Bo Mi.

also, I thought "fat Asian businessman" was a stereotype.

Fat Koreans exist (all the men in my family for example). But the body issues in Korea run deep, my mother basically told me it's better to be pretty and dumb than smart and fat; but her reasoning was that nobody listens to a fat girl.

Hooray body image issues!

[–]Ligiment 9 points10 points ago

Why does snake oil make you a face identifier?

[–]mrmcfakename 20 points21 points ago

It's a term from american history. Way back when, con-men would sometimes sell 'snake oil' for any number of ailments. It also has the connotation of 'anything that doesn't actually do what it's being described as doing'.

Too bad being fat is illegal in japan

[–]concreteteeth 12 points13 points ago

Can I get a source on this?

[–]IKnowHuh 44 points45 points ago

Japan's Fat Tax. Not exactly being illegal per se, but there is a penalty for being over a certain waist size.

[–]jfong86 58 points59 points ago

If America had a Fat Tax, the enormous tax revenue that it would generate would solve all of our budget deficit problems.

[–]TheyreEatingHer 26 points27 points ago

And then people will have less money to spend, so they'll buy cheap food from McDonald's more often, and get even fatter. Evil profit.

[–]MrT-1000 8 points9 points ago

And so the cycle continues... it's genius really; Mr. Gorbachev... tear down this McDonald's!

[–]sinner_di 7 points8 points ago

Except it's cheaper to buy food and make it yourself. Unless of course that was a joke and I am retarded. However, I don't see how me being retarded changes my first statement... this is why I don't talk to people.

[–]Astraea_M 7 points8 points ago

Holy cow, the idiocy of that blog post made my head hurt. But interesting info on the fat tax, anyway.

[–]darthladle 7 points8 points ago

Are sumo wrestlers exempt from this?

[–]IKnowHuh 7 points8 points ago

Yep. It's part of their profession and Japan values the idea of what Sumo represents very heavily.

[–]Scorpius289 9 points10 points ago

very heavily

I see what you did there.

[–]H3000 4 points5 points ago

Not exactly being illegal per say

You mean "per se"?

"This is Latin and means "in itself" or "with reference to itself"; in other words you're talking specifically about the subject in question and not about things related to the subject.

[–]Thirty_Six 11 points12 points ago

If the United States followed suit, we might be able to get out of debt by the end of the year.

Soap operas are HUGE in Korea. This has to be from there

[–]RandyMachoManSavage 12 points13 points ago

No matter what saccharine nonsense you hear: Appearance matters in a relationship. I may get downvotes for this perspective, but people should realize that maintaining a fit physical appearance shows good qualities, like dedication, commitment, and discipline.

Edit: I have been married for some time. One of the best aspects of being in a healthy relationship is the ability to be honest and push each other to be the best (fiscally, educationally, and physically).

[–]robbiedo 17 points18 points ago

be honest and push each other to be the best

That's a recipe for divorce.

[–]SuddenlyHorny 4 points5 points ago

"inspire or motivate each other to be the best" might be better.

[–]nickrandall 5 points6 points ago

this is a Korean drama we're talking about here, stuff like that gets thrown out the window

[–]Daniani 3 points4 points ago

Maintaining a fit physical appearance isn't the only way a human being can show those good qualities.

A career, compassion, volunteer work, attitude towards others, keeping a stable home can all show their qualities. I think it's a very bad idea to base someones qualities on how fit they look.

I'm fat right now and - no offense - but I'm willing to bet all my savings that I have more dedication, commitment, and discipline than you when it comes to my health and physical fitness. Why? I've got a neurological disease that causes me to be disabled and homebound, and a plethora of other problems. I have to watch everything I eat, else the immediate consequences are worse for me than they are for an able-bodied person. I have to watch my activity - too much AND too little are dangerous. Too much can hospitalise and even kill me, too little can promote a slow worsening of my condition. I've had to follow rules since I was a child just to keep myself alive, take medications that cause excess weight whilst balancing this with my calorie intake.

Even besides this, I love my friends, and family - I am dedicated to the people I care about. I try hard every day. I am certainly not lacking willpower, else I probably wouldn't be here.

Yet I'm fat. I bet if I were able to leave the house, many people like you would look at me in the street and make split-second judgements. That's not right. Even without my health issues, it is not right - because physical health and fitness are NOT the only signs of those good qualities at all.

Being able to restrict your calorie intake (i.e eat less food) to appear slim is.. actually a really bad thing to base so many 'good qualities' on. The shittiest, most lazy, most undedicated, most selfish people in the world can appear physically 'fit'. I know this. I have exes. It takes a truly good person to not make split judgements, and hold compassion towards those around them - no matter what their size.

Some of the most strong-willed, dedicated and disciplined people are fat - like my father. He raised me all by himself even though I was sickly, after my mother left us when I was just a tiny toddler. He worked 9-5, and we had a whole big house to ourselves on a bit of land literally built with his own bare hands. He always got me to school on time despite having to work so hard, and still found a moment to help me with my homework and cause me to do massively well in school (before my condition caused me to have to leave regular schooling). He looked after his sick parents when they got older. Now, he's worked so hard that he has enough money to retire early - and he STILL volunteers to help the sick, elderly and needy around him every day - and yep, by doing physical work like their gardens and their DIY. But he's always been a hefty guy. I bet he's done more than a lot of slim people too, in the ways of dedication, commitment, discipline. You just have to get to know people.

tl;dr Part of what you say is actually the nonsense :) Appearances mattering - eh, that's always true ofc. No one can help that.

this is true. i hate women who just let themselves go after their first child. it's disrespectful to the husband and it's disgusting. it's like they know the marriage is locked in now so they can be their real lazy and nasty self. so she was lying the whole time they were dating.

Didn't realize the writing of one represents the ideas of a complex issue to an entire country.

Judging by the amount of plastic surgery on the woman, I'd also have to guess at this being Korean...

[–]SnuggleBunny91 1 point2 points ago

LMAO Japanese? Duhh! They are Koreans and the guy is ChangMin from DBSK! XD

[–]atomicspin 5 points6 points ago

Japan just talks about it. AMERICANS ARE DOING IT!!

[–]meatpoop123 4 points5 points ago

Ya this is Korean. Japan would be more like, "What if I get so fat you can't carry me?"..."Then I'll get 8 other guys to masturbate on you while I shove an octopus up your vagina while you somehow milk your nipples with a fleshlight while I have a 10 year old boy dress up as a classic Kaiju monster while he shits on you".
