I just imagined you seeing the picture and thinking "oh wow that's cool", and then proceeding to throw your phone at the ground until it cracked.

[–]Korchalak 9 points10 points ago

"Until it cracked" As in once, from the height of a cup of starbucks coffee :<

[–]Olive_Garden 6 points7 points ago

I dropped my galaxy s2 from 6 feet doing a pullup on to hard concrete on its corner. Nothing.

[–]Korchalak 2 points3 points ago

When I upgraded from the sI to the sII I decided to run a durability test of my own one drunk night... Ended up throwing it against a brick wall about... 8 times with no screen cracks, took running it over face down on pavement with a dodge charger to finally break the girl... R.I.P

[–]Zeabos 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like you can't throw very hard, or, you expect plastic to crack like glass.

[–]ExplorersDelight -1 points0 points ago

Throws like a girl.

[–]Zeabos 0 points1 point ago

So, since the iPhone uses the same glass screen, this story doesn't add up -- unless of course we are both referring to the glass back of the iPhone4 versus the plastic back of the galaxy.

To my understanding the variation of Gorilla Glass used on the Samsung is a stronger variant of the one used on iPhone. Also the iPhone 4 and 4's have a pretty major design flaw (in my opinion) being that the glass actually extends to the end of the device where the comparable Samsung products have a trimming to the glass. This means that an apple phone landing on its side has a much higher chance of damaging the glass around it, compared to its Samsung counterparts.

iPhone: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone-4-top-new-1.jpg Samsung: http://cdn2.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/galaxy-s-3.jpg

(I just grabbed two random pictures of google-ing both the iPhone 4 and Samsung S3)

I would like to add at the end of this rant that I work for Rogers Communications, as a wireless sales rep, so I see the physical damage done to phones on a regular basis, and screen damage due to drops is much higher on iPhone products then Samsung's. Based on what customers bring into our store.

[–]JohnAbruzzi -1 points0 points ago

Well what did you expect? Let me test what I mustn't do otherwise my phone will break by doing it.

[–]SkullduggeryUK 19 points20 points ago

[–]theNYEHHH[S] 13 points14 points ago

There's the post that gave me the idea ! I couldn't find it, Thank you :)

[–]HotrodCorvair 14 points15 points ago

yours is better!

[–]sullyj3 2 points3 points ago

Original has better patterns, OP has better colors IMO. Obviously you don't have any control over how it smashes.

[–]brosiusra 9 points10 points ago

That's actually interesting. How did you do it?

[–]theNYEHHH[S] 36 points37 points ago

My phone was already broken because I suck and dropped it.

Go over the cracks with color sharpies and wipe off the extra with a damp paper towel as you go :)

[–]themaybatatter 32 points33 points ago

I did the same thing after I dropped my baby.

[–]theNYEHHH[S] 61 points62 points ago

I hope your referring to your iPhone and not your child.

[–]brosiusra 5 points6 points ago

Oh geez. I plan to keep mine unbroken as long as possible. :x And it's black. Really cool effect though.

[–]kkool1827 17 points18 points ago

I wish I could plan to not drop things

[–]dharrison21 -1 points0 points ago

Um, yeah, you and everyone else.

September 12th, gotta break my phone. DAMN MY STUBBORN ADHERENCE TO SCHEDULES!

[–]cloud123410 4 points5 points ago

I just want to point out in the other thread you can go to an apple store and have their techs replace the back for like $20.

[–]BlinkOh 32 points33 points ago

Yeah but it's just cosmetic damage right?

I would rather see people finding creative ways to make their cosmetic problems acceptable, than see people funding the idea that use of poor material is acceptable.

[–]cloud123410 8 points9 points ago

That's a great way to look at it, I wouldn't have ever thought about it like that.

[–]rayyychul 3 points4 points ago

Well, cosmetic damage until it starts falling apart and leaving glass everywhere.

[–]derp-a-lerp 1 point2 points ago

Poor material? It's a handheld computer. People need to learn to not drop expensive pieces of equipment. Obviously things happen, but I doubt anyone will be releasing an indestructible smartphone anytime soon.

[–]eagle7strike 1 point2 points ago

My Droid 2 is a tank. My little cousin got hold of it while I wasn't looking and dropped it out a third story window onto the sidewalk below, and all t did was lightly scratch the outer casing.

[–]kalliopehm 1 point2 points ago

Same with my Samsung. One of the kids I used to babysit snagged it from the counter while I wasn't paying attention and threw it out the window (because she's a prat and I wouldn't let her have a cookie or something). It survived the fall and the only cosmetic damage is some peeling from the anti-skid coating.

[–]BlinkOh 1 point2 points ago

Just a poor choice in material. The back of a phone should be made from something that can't crack, without it that leaves both sides of the phone vulnerable to damage. I know it might be a handheld computer, but it's also a mobile device, meaning it will be moved around quite often. During some of those movements gravity will happen.

My phone gets dropped all the time, yet the plastic back to it never shatters to oblivion.

[–]ZombieKingKong 1 point2 points ago

the glass is cracked, but it's not chipping off?

[–]SaraLovesScalpals2 6 points7 points ago

How the fuck did you guys accomplish this ? ? Like fuck. I broke mine and seconds later I had glass shards in my finger tips.. Fuck that . I just bought a new case so you can't see the broken part.

[–]LastStickOfDynamite 12 points13 points ago

I never realized until now just how fucking stupid it was of Apple to give their phone a glass back.

[–]threenil 6 points7 points ago

A dented/scratched aluminum backed iPhone 5 (or whatever the fuck it's going to be called) is going to look fantastic, too.

[–]breannabalaam 3 points4 points ago

I have no idea why they don't use gorilla glass like the rest of the cell phone companies. I've dropped my HTC Thunderbolt numerous times and my only problem is that the back-plate will fly off if I don't have a case on.

[–]mandrsn1 1 point2 points ago

I have no idea why they don't use gorilla glass like the rest of the cell phone companies.

They would need to license the technology from Corning. They use a very similar glass that just isn't the trademarked Gorilla Glass.

[–]Pank 0 points1 point ago

gorilla glass is very HARD (resists scratches very well) but really BRITTLE (cracks easily). Most things that are engineered to be hard end up being brittle.

for example, soft metals flex and bend, which makes them less likely to shatter (because they'll just flex), but as a side effect, they're easily scratched. Glass works more or less the same way, its always a tradeoff

[–]SkullduggeryUK 3 points4 points ago

I think it would be cool to get a spare back and etch a design and then colour it rather than just having the cracks

Sadly I have the black iphone so it wouldnt work with mine

[–]ifoundanegg 8 points9 points ago

Silver sharpies? The metallics may work.

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 10 points11 points ago

Was it all it was cracked up to be?

I stole that one.

[–]sas_ 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for honesty.

[–]ChikiParm 0 points1 point ago

The thumbnail looked like a colored smoke effect. I was intrigued....Turns out its just a busted phone.

[–]Injuratron 1 point2 points ago

Really cool! Ill try that if I ever break any of my devices. What wouod be really cool is a protective case with that design!

[–]WamZz 1 point2 points ago

Well, now if mine cracks I wont be too sad :) Unless its the front..

[–]ME_LIKE_BURRITO -1 points0 points ago

Do you people not believe in cases!? And do you people not believe in cases for covering up your cracked shit?! Your first instinct was to sharpie that shit instead of just putting a case on it????? whyyyyyyyyy

[–]theNYEHHH[S] 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I usually paint my cases. I've had several. My case was actually on it when I dropped it, it manage to save the front screen but the back did not survive :(

[–]OceanicFlight815 0 points1 point ago

FYI - There are only 2 screws at the bottom of the phone. Remove those and slide the back of the phone upwards toward the lock button. This will allow the back to come right off. Buy a replacement back and repeat steps in reverse for installation. Very easy and cheap to fix. If you buy a replacement make sure you pick the correct model of iPhone and correct mobile carrier. Here's a link to eBay for replacements. Good luck.

[–]instantderp 0 points1 point ago

just cracked mine, looking to do this!

[–]eSpressoSquirrel 0 points1 point ago

My husband is notorious for throwing his phones across the room when he's frustrated. Thanks for the super useful idea!

[–]threenil 19 points20 points ago

Another useful idea? Some anger management for the hubby so he doesn't throw his phones.

[–]eSpressoSquirrel 5 points6 points ago

No kidding!!

[–]caliegalie -2 points-1 points ago

I kinda want to get an iPhone just to do this xD

[–]shaggietv4 -1 points0 points ago

so you broke your fucken phone?

[–]theawsomjman 0 points1 point ago

you should have got the black one, it runs faster
