i think your way of posting it, is almost worse than the imgur link. you are using the sites bandwidth but not showing any of his adds, links to other work, links to a store, or anything else like that. just link it as a normal page.

ok, no idea what a "bourke" is, i assume it's supposed to be an insult. and the reason i was saying it's worse is because:

  • the comic has the website printed on the image. so if you're worried about finding where it came from you can get it from the comic. so no need to use the url to back track the image, which i doubt very few people would do anyways.

  • posting the pbf comic image directly, just uses the bandwidth of the side with giving no gains, where as posting the imgur link doesn't use the bandwidth. So if you post to the site you're costing money but giving no gain. at least the imgur is a 0 cost.

  • finally, just post a link to the guys page. this shouldn't even be a discussion.

While it's good that you linked to his website, this is still the incorrect way to post a comic. Your original post should link directly to the comic's website like this, then you should provide an imgur link in the comments.

The authors of the comics have expressed that they would rather have their page linked to. They themselves have said that they get more traffic that way and that it's not a bad thing if their website gets overloaded. Obviously there are going to be some who think differently but the majority have spoken and it is now a rule of this subreddit.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. It's more about the flood of ads, not knowing where to look, and wading through pop-ups just to get to an image that's usually mediocre.

It's not always the case, and usually it isn't, but it happens enough to eventually avoid any links but the familiar ones.

I'm sorry, but with Reddit's history of unintentionally DDOSing sites, it's actually better to link the comic with imgur in the original post, then if link the source in the comments. That way the site doesn't get the traffic that could potentially bring small sites down and the majority of the traffic is sent to imgur, a site that can handle the traffic. And if someone wants to see more from the same artist, they can easily click the link in the comments, but a considerably fewer amount of people do that.

I really don't have an opinion on this because it doesn't affect me, I just think that the extent to which a community follows the rules is a reflection of the quality of the community. However, it does affect the authors of the comics who make money from them. From what I've read, enough authors expressed to the mods of /r/funny that they wanted there to be a rule that rehosting webcomics not be allowed. As far as I know, there has not been a significant amount of authors who disagree.
