Half of these comments annoy the shit out of me. As a grad student I HAD to work a full-time unpaid internship this summer. And my schedule is such that I can't work this semester. I need a student loan "refund" to live off of if I want to go to school. Am I happy with how much debt I'm getting into? No. But I shouldn't have to choose NOT to go to school, considering I don't know how I'd ever earn enough money to afford this kind of education without receiving the education and getting a better job in the first place.

[–]faerielfire 0 points1 point ago

And if you're going into a reasonable field with good job prospects then it should pay for itself in a reasonable time period. As long as you're not squandering it of course =) I'm in the same position.

[–]scrivenerserror 0 points1 point ago

The most squandering I do is spending 900 bucks on a plane ticket for Christmas break. And I don't want to say my field because I'll get more flack (I'm a law student, ok?!)...

[–]Second_Foundationeer 0 points1 point ago

No summer research? We get slightly more pay if we research in the summer..

[–]carlton87 16 points17 points ago

At a cost to you of 6-9% interest, that kind of logic will never generate wealth.

[–]liveinmymind 1 point2 points ago

Could be a scholarship or a stipend, which are usually given at no cost to the student.

[–]kerdon 1 point2 points ago

6-9? The FAFSA loans I've been offered are 3, tops

[–]Zvanbez[S] -1 points0 points ago

6% of 0 is still 0. My $60 is pure profit.

[–]chenyu768 6 points7 points ago

What is this College "Refund" check that you speak of?

[–]simjanes2k 53 points54 points ago

"College refund check?"

You mean your loans for tuition that you're spending on stupid shit instead?

Rich people openly guffaw at your imaginary accomplishment.

[–]geshikhte 39 points40 points ago

More like "excess financial aid you are supposed to use to live off of." Mine comes from scholarships and grants.

[–]BurntTheToast 11 points12 points ago

Mine came from the G.I bill

[–]Chubbstock 2 points3 points ago

post 9/11? (aka chapter 33?)

I LOVE THAT BAH CHECK!!!

[–]FAStalin 0 points1 point ago

My state pays for school, so I get to pocket the $~1400 a month from the Ch30.

[–]MissIndigo 2 points3 points ago

Mine hasn't come through yet. :(

[–]TyleReddit 0 points1 point ago

The same thing is happening to me. Some verification form is holding it up and they can't figure out exactly which one it is, so I'm reduced to eating ramen until they figure it out.

[–]Baron_Nashor 0 points1 point ago

The fact you said "reduced to" gives me great hope.

[–]MissIndigo 0 points1 point ago

I hope you have no shame. Ramen is delicious.

[–]kendrahwithanh 1 point2 points ago

yup, i use mine to pay rent so i don't have to drop out to work at some shitty office the rest of my life.

[–]Funktapus 8 points9 points ago

Actually, my 'tuition refund' (which it is labelled) is a stipend, much like a salary. It comes from my graduate fellowship (not a loan), which is provided by the university but might soon be picked up by the NSF.

If that happens, I'll be cashing that check with taxpayer money. Thanks, rich people.

[–]Zvanbez[S] -4 points-3 points ago

Something like that...

[–]kaydub88 -3 points-2 points ago

It's funny, isn't it?

My sister calls hers her "college stipend."

[–]buterbetterbater -3 points-2 points ago

yeah, it'll only take a couple of years for that loan bill to become a haunting reminder of how dumb you were.

[–]LGFL5000 7 points8 points ago

SIXTY DOLLARS?!

[–]Bread_Heads 3 points4 points ago

Having just gotten off the phone with a student financial aid lender, there is nothing to celebrate here, seriously.

[–]Zvanbez[S] 6 points7 points ago

Since I don't have to pay anything to go to school this year...I beg to differ.

[–]Del_Castigator 1 point2 points ago

I didn't take any loan I have to repay this quarter my refund check was almost 4k with work study added.

[–]tsrforza 0 points1 point ago

The rich people are the only reason you get those checks.

[–]noburdennyc 0 points1 point ago

What is this college refund and why am i not getting it?

[–]Commieguy1000 4 points5 points ago

Its "Community" so...UPVOTE.

[–]rscott89 3 points4 points ago

Some of us have more than full scholarships, life is great. I don't blame you for hating me Reddit.

[–]Zvanbez[S] 1 point2 points ago

Full scholarship plus a job that requires me to sell my soul BUT pays for housing. Reddit doesn't hate me as much as you. I'm sorry.

[–]JBEHAR11 0 points1 point ago

i have brought you back to neutral cuz i do, but i dont think OP is in this club

[–]rscott89 5 points6 points ago

Well thanks for your upvote, but unfortunately it seams I am being downvoted even more. apparently working my ass off for scholarships so that I don't have to be in crushing debt is making some voters upset with me. I don't know if it is jealousy or the fact that I don't fit into the generally understood and accepted conclusion that all American college students are drowned it debt, sorry I broke the mold reddit.

[–]JBEHAR11 3 points4 points ago

well i think it comes off as bragging which really sets people off. I have had scholarships through six years of school now and I worked my ass off to not only earn them but to keep them, (much harder in law school now more than ever), and I tend to be very hush about it because people with loans (with good reason) complain about the system a lot, and I agree with them on every point. It is a shitty pyramid scheme out there and people like OP probably understand what is going on but will never admit to themselves that they are feeding into it, as I am.

[–]rscott89 1 point2 points ago

Normally I don't mention it because people generally get upset with me. But I felt like commenting on this because most people are assuming that he is getting a refund and commenting about how he is further in debt. I just felt like reminding people that it is possible to leave school in the black, not everyone with a degree is downing in school loans.

[–]stormyweather117 -1 points0 points ago

Stay gold ponyboy. Stay gold.

[–]crkhobbit 0 points1 point ago

Is this the check you get for over-borrowing on your student loans, which you proceed to blow on bullshit that you can't even remember, and then spend the next ten years regretting the decision to live so irresponsibly while you're practically crushed under the weight of the enormous debt?

If so, then, uh, grats on being rich I guess.

[–]Rooster55 28 points29 points ago

Or.. Some of use use our loans for rent, car and health insurance, and books. Sometimes as a college student it's nice to have more then X dollars in ones bank account, albeit only temporarily.

[–]invaderkristin 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for this. It's like people automatically assume all students are irresponsible 21 year olds who will spend it all on beer. I save a lot of mine for emergencies since I had to quit my job to take care of my mom. It's my only source of income.

[–]BoogieBot 0 points1 point ago

I've never quite understood how this happens - a few of my friends in undergrad received loan "refunds" that they blew on stupid shit. I had federal Stafford loans as part of my financial aid package - those were always applied before I paid the rest of the bill (out of pocket, in cash). So there was never any overpayment on my account. I guess I was doin' it right.

So how do people end up with refunds? Are they getting really nice scholarship and grant packages and then just taking the maximum amount of loans on top of that?

[–]geshikhte 6 points7 points ago

My excess comes from scholarships and grants. The excess is intended to pay rent, books, etc. (even though it's not actually enough to cover those things). It's literally worked into the financial aid package.

[–]Anonymous3891 4 points5 points ago

Private loans. The first year I filled out FAFSA my mother was married to a rich asshole at the time and I didn't qualify for any federal aid, grants nor loans, and I was too lazy to reapply after they got divorced (It's now worked in my favor, as the interest rates are down to 3% on my remaining principal).

I always had to tell Sallie Mae how much to send to my university every quarter. I had to cancel a class once after payment was disbursed and I got a refund check, which I immediately paid back to Sallie Mae because I am not a retard.

[–]simjanes2k 2 points3 points ago

I laughed out loud at "because I am not a retard."

[–]djentlemetal 1 point2 points ago

Friend of mine went to ITT (yeah, I know...) for a year and paid for it with a private loan from Sallie Mae. He dropped out due to the fact that he knew more than his "teachers" and wasn't getting anything out of it. He's in debt to Sallie Mae for 40k for a "college" experience that didn't work out.

I, myself, receive grants (Pell, FSEOG) and Stafford Loans. Tuition and class fees are automatically taken out of my check before I even receive anything in the mail. The rest is used to pay for books, food and 3 months worth of rent, utilities and cell phone bills.

[–]Kittychanley 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much in the same boat as your friend, except I attended a private university. Failed a required gen ed philosophy class freshman year because the prof was a complete retard who would only pass students who could reiterate back at him what he had said in lecture, instead of other also correct interpretations of the philosophy. Lost my 12k/year scholarship but continued school because I didn't want to quit because of one class my first year. Halfway through junior year I dropped out simply because I was 40+k in debt and realized due to the university offering a couple required classes for my major every 3 years that I'd still be there for 3+ more years to get my degree. Top grades in all of my Chemistry and Math classes, and now I work at Target for min wage.

[–]djentlemetal 0 points1 point ago

Target was the worst job I ever had. It was my first job when I was 16, and wow what a nightmare. Anyway, I turn 29 on the 24th and I just started college at the beginning of this year after a decade of fuck-ups. I've found it to be the most enlightening experience I've ever had (this coming from someone who's been married, divorced, a major drug addict for years, moving around the country and living in different cities, etc.).

It's enlightening in how open my eyes are now to the way money works (I know, as someone who's almost 30, I should have a grasp of this), and to the fact that if I had just applied myself a decade ago, I'd have gotten to the point I'm at now much earlier. In high school, I barely did any homework (easy, compared to what I do now) and I barely graduated with a 2.7 GPA.

Now, I'm able to alleviate the boredom I had before by realizing that every scrap of work I put my energy into can be a fascinating way to exercise my imagination. I know that sounds cheesy, but that's the best way to describe it. From the tedious 1,500-minimum word essay, to the most potentially annoying group members for projects, I find myself retaining a 4.0 GPA and not batting an eye. I say this with the utmost humility because, seriously guys, I was a SHITTY, impetuous student from K-12 and now it's just different...

Sorry about the ramblings-on, but this post became immediately relevant to my current situation. I'm happy for OP because I too receive extra money to help me with school and life in general. It's a great feeling, and even though I'll be stuck in the same boat with the rest of the people who have student loan debt, I look at it as an opportunity to not be a puss and see the bigger picture. I think I'm the best investment I've ever made, so it'll be worth it in the long run.

[–]Kirov666 1 point2 points ago

Agreed.

[–]Draggedaround 1 point2 points ago

Rooster55 is correct.

[–]reign_in123 1 point2 points ago

Agree. I have some serious car repairs to do and that money helps fix those issues so I can get to work. For some people, it's responsible if your trying to get somewhere

[–]crkhobbit 0 points1 point ago

I am sorry for your debt.

[–]luckybms 0 points1 point ago

Implying these are the kind of unnecessary things being referred to

Hint: they're not

[–]Zvanbez[S] 14 points15 points ago

Nope. It's free money the university pays me. I busted my ass and got a full tuition scholarship. And now my job pays for my housing/food. So I get a paid a few dollars to go to school every semester.

[–]commonorange 4 points5 points ago

Everyone is being so sassy with you based on the poor decisions they made and feel shitty about. So, I just wanted to say, HEY, good for you for getting that scholarship!

[–]Zvanbez[S] 2 points3 points ago

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

[–]Arinnarina 1 point2 points ago

People spend that money? I just throw it in the bank and continue to spend money on next to nothing.

[–]crkhobbit 2 points3 points ago

I've met people that go to school just so they can get those checks and live for "free".

[–]ohgeronimo 0 points1 point ago

Nah, only $400 of that goes to stupid bullshit. The rest goes to gas, food, supplies for classes, extra fees they don't tell you about until after the first week of class, so on. I mean, the fuck, $300 extra charge because I was taking three classes that used the same lab, so therefore had to pay three times for the upkeep on it. And then the only time I used it was to print stuff, with my own paper.

Or at least that's how I did it at the time. There were of course those students going to New York during the summer on that money. I just spent what little wasn't going towards everyday stuff on some video game stuff so I wouldn't feel like blowing my brains out after yet another class that has 95% of the same content as the rest of the classes in my major.

I had refund money because I didn't live on campus, and most semesters didn't have time to work between the commute, mandatory class attendance (and lab attendance), and needing to spend free time shooting pictures for class. So $2000 a semester for those things is generally necessary.

And it makes you feel rich when you can afford to cover taco bell for your friends.

[–]Biertrinken 1 point2 points ago

It is possible to have more money in scholarships than the cost of your tuition. Between my scholarships and stipend I make ~$15000 a year in school.

[–]dumbbirds 0 points1 point ago

I'm still waiting for mine to come in T___T

[–]Milbert_ 1 point2 points ago

Rich people don't get put on hold!

[–]woahdaddyhotmama 1 point2 points ago

Disbursement dates are my Christmas. I fill up my gas tank and get tacos. It's a good day.

[–]Cuterebelscum 1 point2 points ago

I wish I didn't have to work to pay my tuition.

[–]VestaDear 1 point2 points ago

I know that feel man.

Hopefully now that I can register as an independent on next years fafsa I can get some scholarships or something. My school just did not give a fuck that I was an honor student in high school.

[–]jglobal 0 points1 point ago

and then you spend it all in less than a week.

[–]amishtek 0 points1 point ago

Got an email today said it should be there Friday. I feel you, bro.

[–]kendrahwithanh 0 points1 point ago

you got yours already? Mine doesn't come until november...

[–]bwalks007 -1 points0 points ago

Hope you got more than sixty dollars.

[–]leahdiarrhea -1 points0 points ago

It's not a loan it's called financial aid, its basically free money. I get it too. Why? Because I can.

[–]kerdon 0 points1 point ago

I've been F5in my account all day. Lol

[–]byobguy 0 points1 point ago

My loan refund is only around $500, thats enough for books, lunch for 3 weeks, and gas for a week. I in no way feel rich when I get mine.

[–]Wolfssteiner 1 point2 points ago

He's probably talking about the refund you get from the financial aid. They deposit the money you didn't use into your account. I set it aside into a savings account for the future in case there comes a time when I can't afford books or tuition and there's no more help.

[–]duchovny -1 points0 points ago

You feel like talking to a brick?

[–]a_lad_insane -5 points-4 points ago

I used to work in a student finance office. I fucking hate people like you.

[–]Landworth 8 points9 points ago

Could you please tell me why it takes 8 weeks to process something that already took 6 weeks to get through the processing process?

[–]Zvanbez[S] 21 points22 points ago

And I fucking hate people who work in the student finance office.

[–]mojonacho 2 points3 points ago

I currently work in a student finance office. I don't hate students.

[–]kendrahwithanh 0 points1 point ago

why is that?

[–]way2bored -1 points0 points ago

i just saw him live at syracuse, he's music is dope

[–]Olive_Garden -1 points0 points ago

Isnt it weird that I can tell you're black?

[–]jamieb122 0 points1 point ago

The comments here about over borrowing kind of piss me off. When I was in college I used to pull out $2k extra every semester so I could enjoy myself, buy a few things extra and also have some left for emergencies. In the grand scheme of things $8K over four years out of ~$80k is nothing. I was smart, entered into a career which has me making enough money 3 years later to put ~$1200 in savings after paying my monthly loan payment.

TL;DR Unless you know this guys finances and future plans, shut-up about over borrowing. Some people are more smarter about finances than the average joe (and GASP...maybe even smarter than you)

[–]sailawaysail -2 points-1 points ago

What the hell is going on this thread...I thought this was /r/funny

[–]blasted_biscuits -3 points-2 points ago

Couple that with the feeling you get years later when you realize that debt will follow you everywhere and is absolutely unabsolvable aside from dying in which case they'll probably go after your family.

[–]fawker -4 points-3 points ago

If your college refund check is making you feel rich you're doing it wrong.

Start a savings account, live within your means, profit.

I guess high school / parenting is still blowing it for some of you kids.

[–]wanderer11 -4 points-3 points ago

So borrowing money makes you feel rich? In that case I can take a year off of work.
