    I was at that game, go Buckeyes! (Any confusion from OP's title, it was an American college football game, Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Miami Redhawks. This is the Ohio State University band, also know as "The Best Damn Band in the Land" because they do amazing things like this. This is them playing songs by the Beach Boys. My High school band director actually was the one who help make this too!)

    Can't say I know more than an actual college band member, but I go to osu and the dudes I know in the band say its pretty much a full time job.

    In terms of actual, scheduled practice time, we spend 2 hours per weekday during the school year, with maybe 12 hours on gameday all told. However, it varies significantly when you account for music memorization, horn cleaning, time before and after practice, cheer groups if you're involved, practicing for challenges, and other things of the sort. In addition, before the school year and during breaks when we have an upcoming show(like bowl games ;-;) we have two or three-a-days, which are anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, as well as scheduled pep bands.

    That's what I always find amazing. I was in marching band for 4 years and we could put together a halftime show in a matter of weeks (one week at band camp included), but a different show every so often? It can be done, but that's some serious dedication.

    They not only do script Ohio every week they do things like this. This past week they made formations involving funk music. But last week was amazing with the wave and many other things. TBDBITL always puts on a hell of a show.

    As a current college marching band member, not very much. The majority of the band is simply marching forward, the wave is just a line of people moving backwards and then forwards again. The difficulty in this move is probably setting it, but even then they were likely given coordinate sheets that tell them where to go.

    Not exactly. The difficulty in these sets is in the movement. It's not just a "backwards, then forwards again" move. Remember that the wave is moving along at 2 8-to-5 steps per band member, but that we also have to maintain its shape, so we have to march along the wave while keeping relative to the moving reference of the wave itself. If it were as simple as you were saying, the wave would look like a sine function, and wouldn't have the actual shape of the wave like it does.

    So you're saying you have to guide? I still fail to see what is so difficult about this. I think the drill is certainly creative, but the execution isn't really anything extraordinary. Is it simple? No, but it's also not abnormally hard.

    No. It's not an easy thing to understand unless you marched it. Preserving a moving form is one of if not the single most difficult thing to do in marching band. You have to vary your step size and your direction constantly, as every step gets bigger/smaller depending on where you are in the wave, and you have to march your position independently. Obviously you have to guide as in every other form, but that's not how this is done.

    Imagine moving a wheel down the field, WHILE it's spinning. The track you follow is not actually circular( http://www.pedagonet.com/mathgenius/images/a203.png look at the top picture). The wave is similar, but with a picture instead of a simple circle. The path you take is very different than you'd expect, and we had a few members do some math in order to get the general idea into everyone's head for the execution.

    I'm in marching band, I get how vary step size goes, I just still don't think this is super difficult. I've marched moves where it's get it right or cut your lip open/ chip a tooth on your mouth piece. Those I consider hard. These kinds of moves are more so something you have to run a few times over to get a grasp on. I'm sure there's a level of frustration involved with freshman and less experienced members, but I just don't think it's super difficult.

      Formations like these are very hard to keep looking as nice as this. Trust me, I have many years experience with formation marching. It'a probably the most difficult kind.

      It probably took upwards from one month to get to this point (assuming 2 hour practices 3 days a week).
