I, too, always take off my shoes before walking up the elevator stairs.

[–]robbiefreeze 126 points127 points ago

Here in Japan, you always take of your shoes when inside. If in doubt, take off your shoes...this situation definitely has no precedence. Stairs in an elevator, wtf is that!?

[–]Akujikified 39 points40 points ago

Stairs in an elevator? My boss must be upstairs laughing his ass off, best take off my shoes.

[–]zandekar 18 points19 points ago

It's not an elevator, it's stairs behind elevator doors. Shesh.

[–]SunriseSurprise 10 points11 points ago

No, it's a really big elevator and once that guy got in and started walking up the stairs, it all started moving up.

[–]robotdinosaurs 4 points5 points ago

So, an escalator then?

[–]ZGem13 1 point2 points ago

No, because the stairs are stationary.

[–]notsonerdy 1 point2 points ago

its a stelavator

[–]aramatheis 12 points13 points ago

I can't really tell from the gif, but are the stairs carpeted? That could be why he took his shoes off

[–]SEXKlTTEN 2 points3 points ago

At work, do you take off your shoes?

[–]Roomy 3 points4 points ago

Well yeah, I thought hte Japanese would take shoes off inside, too. But take your shoes off for stairs when your shoes are already on inside? And take your shoes off in a business? I thought while at work, in your job, you'd still be wearing shoes in Japan.

What gets me is that he thinks it's fine to have the shoes on in the building, in the elevator, but not while going up stairs. He probably put the shoes back on after the stairs, too. Honestly, that seems completely insane to me. Just keep your shoes on.

[–]Sloth_speed 2 points3 points ago

Do they take off their shoes in an office building?

[–]themonkeygrinder 0 points1 point ago

But...he's already inside...

[–]TheFuckinProblem 0 points1 point ago

He was already inside tho...

[–]kyleyankan 75 points76 points ago

Everytime I take elevator stairs, I take my shoes off. Just makes sense man.

[–]Msj2705 39 points40 points ago

It has never made sense to me, but I've always done it because I was told it is the polite thing to do.

[–]jt004c 4 points5 points ago

Think of it like voting.

I mean sure one person with their shoes on won't make much of a difference, but if everybody wore their shoes on the elevator stairs, the carpets would eventually show a higher degree of wear.

Do your part

[–]Flea0 3 points4 points ago

elevator stairs etiquette. simple stuff.

[–]rileyrulesu 5 points6 points ago

Oh. I thought the joke was because they were all so much taller than he was.

[–]lichborne 1 point2 points ago

Still confused as to why he was flipping all of them off at the end...

AMERICAN CULTURE FACK YOU BUDDY COCA COLA SHAKEITUH BABY

[–]Chunga_the_Great 2 points3 points ago

FAK U BIC BOIIIIIIIIIIIIII

[–]delicatelittleflower 1 point2 points ago

I guess in Japan, sketch comedy is still a thing. I hope they bring it back; that's pretty funny shit there

[–]helenres 486 points487 points ago

why did he take his shoes off?

[–]Hoobleton 17 points18 points ago

Bert Cooper's staircase.

[–]ichibandesu 325 points326 points ago

Because it is a traditional and polite thing to do. One of the reasons is because it can spread dirt/ mud in the house/ school/ building (common sense and it's practical to leave it outside/ carry it (like this man does) or leave it at the front of the house. Another reason is because in the traditional Japanese household, there are straw mats (tatami mats) and these can be broken down with shoes but can stand socks and bare feet well.

Edit: I forgot to mention they wear slippers in the household, however they don't wear slippers on tatami mats. So on tiled and carpeted areas. Doing all this stuff is also a sign of respect to the owners/people who stay in the house. :3

[–]is_a_jerk 527 points528 points ago

OK that's neat and all but he wasn't going into a house, just up some stairs.

[–]wolfvision 119 points120 points ago

He just wanted to be comfortable while pacing up a flight of calmly coloured stairs

[–]Breathing_Balls 133 points134 points ago

Or he has a 'sock on stairs' fetish.

[–]FAP_TO_ALLTHETHINGS 163 points164 points ago

This is a real fetish I can confirm.

[–]TrepanationBy45 27 points28 points ago

We're going to need confirmation of your ability to confirm, otherwise your claim of self-confirmation means nothing, I tell ya.

[–]Wrenblood 28 points29 points ago

The username says it all.

[–]jackskidney 33 points34 points ago

Question: If you're turned on by all things can you still have fetishes? Do all things then become individual fetishes? or do you have one fetish for all things? or can you be turned on by all things but still have a fetish that you're more turned on by?

This is what keeps me up at night.

[–]calamormine 32 points33 points ago

Does a set of all sets contain itself?

[–]S4uce 1 point2 points ago

As per his(her?) username, I believe (s)he is fully capable of confirming this information.

[–]Amarae 3 points4 points ago

Girls don't fap, confirmed to be a male.

[–]shadowman3001 0 points1 point ago

To you even fap to British people saying the word 'rubbish'?

[–]delicatelittleflower 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for your username

[–]Sarah_Connor 12 points13 points ago

Better than a 'stares at socks' fetish

[–]HyruleanHero1988 11 points12 points ago

Who the fuck are you to judge the merits of a fetish?

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 11 points12 points ago

She's Sarah goddamn Connor, don't questions her!

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

Or those shoes hurt like a bitch.

[–]Sauceror 3 points4 points ago

He clearly likes slipping, because of slippery socks, and breaking his neck on really steep stairs.

[–]7ewis 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't feel comfortable walking up stairs without shoes on?

Surely shoes are better because they give more grip, and stop you stubbing your toe :p

[–]scots23 3 points4 points ago

As a coordinated person, I can honestly say I am comfortable with the extremely treacherous activity of walking up stairs.

[–]geekyoutdoorsman 20 points21 points ago

It looks like the stairs are carpeted, and the floor he was on is tile. Didn't want to get the carpet dirty.

[–]Afa1234 6 points7 points ago

They do it at schools too, and it looks like an apartment building or something of that likeness

[–]ROGGER7893 12 points13 points ago

He's the "Mr. Bean" of Japan!

[–]delicatelittleflower 2 points3 points ago

I immediately thought of Mr. Bean as well. Giant elevator steps would suit him to a T

[–]chewyrunt 10 points11 points ago

In Japan the difference between what qualifies as 'inside' and 'outside' can be subtle.

[–]Nightwing11 1 point2 points ago

The guy was clearly a ninja assassin and didn't want to alert his mark that he was coming.

[–]ohsothisisreddit 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure some extrapolation would solve this conundrum for us, but fuck it, I'll just sit here instead

[–]rmc1317 1 point2 points ago

I can't really tell, but they look carpeted. That could be why

[–]garychencool 0 points1 point ago

Maybe the stairs was the house...

[–]pakattak 0 points1 point ago

It looks like the stairs are carpeted.

[–]ihatewomen1925 1 point2 points ago

Also, why is he sneaking? We need the video

[–]dirtierainbow 24 points25 points ago

So, I'm confused though, he was already inside? Is it acceptable because of the type of floor he was already on, and the stairs were carpeted, so needed the shoes off?

[–]xGhost09 23 points24 points ago

you have the right idea. Its Japanese tradition. I can't tell from the gif, but it looks like the stairs might have been a different material (maybe carpet or something other than what he was already walking on). And he must have thought it would be necessary to take his shoes off. I lived in Japan for 4 months and it depends on the building. For houses its shoes off immediately and slippers on until you reach a tatami mat then take the slippers off as well. For corporate buildings and public buildings you can leave your shoes on most of the time because they are usually tile floors but basically if you run into carpet or a different material sometimes removing your shoes is necessary. It depends however. He was probably just trying to be polite which is the Japanese way.

[–]ImBeingSeriousHere 3 points4 points ago

I lived in Japan for about 8 years and this still leaves me a little confused. In buildings where you have to take your shoes off, there's usually a place for you to leave them and exchange for slippers.

Although judging from the little clip here, it's a very odd building that might be retarded.

[–]delias_ 2 points3 points ago

Important to note that there is also a distinction between "entering" a house and "stepping up" into a house. Even in public buildings (bath houses, restaurants, and what not), if you see a raised portion of the floor, it's a hint to take your shoes off before stepping up onto it.

[–]andyface 3 points4 points ago

Does your username translate to 'I'm first' or something along those lines? I'm going on my pretty vague knowledge of Japanese :p

[–]xGhost09 2 points3 points ago

yeah, i have some Japanese language skills (minimal) and I believe it means something along the lines of the best, #1, superior.

[–]Jorgemeister 6 points7 points ago

Im implementing this rule at my house since today. my house my rules, bitches!

[–]smapti 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the answer/ reply, I found it helpful/ informative, but tbh/ tbfh, your gratuitous/ unnecessary use of slashes made it a bit difficult/ tough to read.

[–]sexyhamster89 -1 points0 points ago

Seems very inconvenient

[–]SeisGurl9 0 points1 point ago

All bases covered friend.

[–]queendraconis 0 points1 point ago

See, this is why I always look in the comments if I'm confused. There's always one person that has an explanation. Thanks! c:

[–]GMBeats95 0 points1 point ago

That really doesn't answer the question

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

The answer is because it's a skit and they thought it would be funny.

[–]pakattak 14 points15 points ago

Because it's hilariously self-deprecating. It's a bit of a stereotype that Japanese people are ultra polite in awkward situations, and a lot of humor can come from a Japanese man being presented with something weird and just going with the flow of it rather than make a fuss. Taking off his shoes is icing on the cake.

An American comedy writer would probably write the sketch a little differently, adding a focus on our association of elevators with people who can't handle stairs due to weight issues. The (now overweight) man, would see the stairs, and immediately try to find another elevator. When it's revealed that the second elevator has stairs, too, he would then just walk away because he wants to take the elevator dammit.

EDIT: Just imagine Homer in this situation. When he hits the first fake elevator: "What the... Hey, I wanna take the elevator!" when he hits the second one... "DOH!" Same joke, American twist.

[–]GaijinFoot 5 points6 points ago

In japan there are sutble clues when and where to take shoes off indoors - a small carpeted step, straw flooring. The stairs were probably carpetted.

[–]xlaxplaya 0 points1 point ago

Ah, that's the answer I was looking for. Thank you.

[–]wheatfields 6 points7 points ago

because Japan. Thats why.

[–]EndorphinRush 2 points3 points ago

Instinctively ninja

[–]bunglejerry 4 points5 points ago

To make less sound? It looks like he's sneaking up the stairs.

[–]mrsushisushi 2 points3 points ago

He is Japanese

[–]SeisGurl9 0 points1 point ago

I wish our culture did this. It's cleaner.

[–]ichibandesu 113 points114 points ago

You should watch the rest of it! God damn it's hilarious. Next time he's at the elevator it opens- and another elevator is there, repeat a few times till he has to crawl into it to get to where he needs to go. Literal elevator-ception.

The time after that, it's a normal elevator and about 10 ladies walk in with only underwear on. He starts undressing... They giggle and leave and a whole bunch of foreigners come in, he's just like O.O and half naked. Foreigners leave and some yakuza (Japanese mafia) come in and kinda harass him. >__<

But seriously, guys, seriously: watch it.

[–]ThePeanutBuddha[S] 85 points86 points ago

Link or gtfo!

[–]Frankeh 43 points44 points ago

It says prank, but it's clearly a scripted skit with an actor.

[–]yetkwai 3 points4 points ago

Wait, are you telling me that a video on youtube has an inaccurate title?

[–]wolfvision 72 points73 points ago

you saved him from having to gtfo

[–]dabockster 5 points6 points ago

That would have been nasty...

[–]TheSemiTallest 13 points14 points ago

Those faces between the sketches will give me nightmares for years...

[–]CerpinTaxes 22 points23 points ago

Why does being in a lift full of western people require giving the finger and shouting "Shake it up baby!"?

[–]RedditCannibal 17 points18 points ago

When in Rome.

[–]jackskidney 5 points6 points ago

flip people off

[–]mjolnir616 10 points11 points ago

The video is kinda old looking, my first thought was that he was saying 'Shake-a da baby' in a bizarre reference to the Louise Woodward trial

[–]UnAVA 6 points7 points ago

Its kind of a misleading title. Its a Japanese Comedy group called "The Drifters" and this is just one of their skit.

[–]MacGyverFB 7 points8 points ago

I like how when the American workers step in one of them says "They didn't give us any beers!".

[–]bzomesius 8 points9 points ago

I like how the western people (they look American to me) are all extremely loud. Shows how the Japanese think of Western culture. I think that's why the guy gets mad at them and gives them the finger since it's considered rude in Japanese culture to talk loudly in public spaces.....then again, I'm probably reading way too much into this

[–]suction 9 points10 points ago

Not at all. You're reading in exactly the right amount.

Japanese have stereotypes for all countries:

USA - loud, no manners, men have yellow fever GB - drink too much, somewhat intimidating France - love food like the Japanese, but are too dirty and lazy Germany - best friends since WWII, but have let their country gone to the shitter and lack the can do attitude they had in Nazi times Italy - well dressed, food is okay, but lazy and strange All other Asian countries - are only there to embarrass Japan and take it's money away

[–]GaijinFoot 3 points4 points ago

As an Englishman in tokyo, youve got GB wrong. They see us as highly cultured, believe it or not.

[–]RockBlock 1 point2 points ago

And as always Canada is invisible. I assume we're just less loud Anericans? Or are we less drunk Brits?

[–]Dr_Jackson 0 points1 point ago

Your lack of punctuation leads to some interesting garden path sentences.

[–]ENKC 0 points1 point ago

Germany - best friends since WWII, but have let their country gone to the shitter and lack the can do attitude they had in Nazi times

I really hope that's not a widely held view.

[–]ThePeanutBuddha[S] 2 points3 points ago

Nice one, thanks!

[–]shiken 3 points4 points ago

SHAKE IT UP!! SHAKE IT UP BABY GOD DAMMIT

I fucking love 90s/80s Japan.

[–]ichibandesu 3 points4 points ago

Thanks! I couldn't remember what the show was called!

Edit: much easier to put 'elevator prank' but didn't occur to me...

[–]_Persephone_ 3 points4 points ago

Woowww reaaaally young Shimura Ken right there.

[–]propaglandist 2 points3 points ago

Excellent. You may stay.

[–]JonBeer 0 points1 point ago

HE'S THE JAPANESE MR. BEAN

[–]orthag 1 point2 points ago

The on with the schoolgirls would have been so much funnier if i spoke Japanese. Still pretty funny.

[–]darnin 10 points11 points ago

Literal elevator-ception

ಠ_ಠ

[–]makopolo2001 3 points4 points ago

Well it wasn't a metaphor.

[–]pakattak 4 points5 points ago

It's the classic Japanese trope of a man being in a strange situation, and trying desperately to fit in with the circumstances so he doesn't stand out or make things awkward. Every culture has a variation on this, but the fascinating bit is where it's different.

British comedy: incredulous exasperation

American comedy: anger/confusion

Indian comedy: bhangra dancing

[–]vandil 1 point2 points ago

Now I want to watch it, but there is no link. You sold me on it, but left me hanging.

[–]DeCapitator 1 point2 points ago

Idea: Get on elevator, go to next floor, doors open to another elevator. An elevator leading to another elevator. It's comedy gold!

[–]PorchMonkeyKike 38 points39 points ago

Well, that elevated quickly

[–]BroKing 6 points7 points ago

Every time I enter a thread, I hope to see a pun, and someone always rises to the occasion.

[–]VanTango 4 points5 points ago

I just try to avoid bringing myself down to their level.

[–]Agente_Anaranjado 0 points1 point ago

Haha. We need elevators like that in the US!

[–]bearsa113609 0 points1 point ago

Where does the right door go? It's going into the wall, then should be going past it, and doesn't look to be a compound door (slides into itself).

[–]theislandking 0 points1 point ago

It's like getting duped into going out with someone who you think is easy.

Who turns out to be a serial heart breaker.
